>> thank you so much for watching. kron. 4 news at 5. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus. big news day. our top story. the pentagon is sending. >> the marines to deal with people in los angeles who have been out protesting against ice raids. this comes just 2 days after president trump sent in national guard troops against the governor's wishes to deal with demonstrators this weekend. but today more protests have been happening up and down the state on the left is a protest that took place in la this afternoon and on the right is demonstration

that was in san francisco today. so far. the protest today have remained peaceful. we have team coverage this hour with all the latest developments. first, we want to go to kron four's jack molmud who is in san jose where another rally in protest is getting underway. jack, what's the latest there? >> that's right. grant vicki. well, first of all, those protests here is primarily about the ice enforcement we've been seeing in los angeles and also here in the bay going take a step back here for a second. so you folks can see watching at home that there are close to about 300 people here. all protests saying, like i said, that ice enforcement that was seen here and documented here within san jose even going back to february when kron 4 first reported that there was ice enforcement going out. you remember those student-led protests that we're on the east side. but here the primary focus is many of these people are still wanting to stand in solidarity with the thousands of people who are protesting in los angeles.

now, again, this isn't just a protest for that, that the ice enforcement and for those antis protesters in los angeles, they're also trying to create action from here. there is a public comment period tonight at around 06:00pm before the city council meeting tomorrow for san jose. >> well, where many organizers are going to try asking city councilors to allocate 1.5 million dollars out of this upcoming budget to help legal defense funds for immigration, attorneys and lawyers. and it's really helped this protesting cars here they're taking big criticism with the city council for wanting to allocate around 2 million dollars to more police enforcing within the neighborhoods. now we did talk to some organizers after what happened in san francisco yesterday where we saw close to 150 people arrested by san francisco. police weeded out the organizers how they're hoping to keep things safe around this time. >> trump is looking for a fight, but he's not looking for the kind of fight that we're going to working to confirm a fight based on morality based on human rights based on nonviolent based

cooperation. and we're going to thousands and thousands of people together to stand and protest against stuff. we're not interested violence. violence as service. >> now it's not only the anti ice protesters that are here in san jose. there are also severaloprotesters calling out what's going to happen tomorrow, which is when the san jose city council will vote on finalizing the mayor's budget in that budget is a proposal that would allow for the arrest of unhoused people if they refuse shelter for several number of times. they're hoping that they can make their voices heard tonight's city council meeting at 06:00pm. we're also expecting to hear from the mayor shortly before 06:00pm as well. so we'll try to bring you the latest on that front as well. for now reporting live in san jose. jack moment. kron 4 looks like it's growing protest. keep us posted thanks yet. >> and immigration protests in

san francisco ended with more than 100 people being arrested last night. what started off as peaceful demonstrations quickly turn dangerous later in the night. windows got smashed. graffiti was on buildings and sidewalks. 2 officers were injured during a clash with demonstrators. one officer ended up in the hospital. mayor daniel lurie says demonstrators also vandalized immunity. police car and waymo vehicles. and more city leaders are speaking publicly today after the violence san francisco saw in its financial district last night. >> kron rob nesbitt is livf right now in san francisco. the latest on their response. rob, what can you tell us? package? >> hundreds gathered in san francisco sunday to speak out against ice raids and arrests. the protests started

peacefully. but mayor daniel lurie says by 07:00pm things became violent and laws were broken. the crowd began to shrink. remaining group became violent. 2 police officers were injured. muni buses were vandalized and store windows were broken. the mayor was joined by several city leaders monday, including interim police chief paul. yep, who says 154 people were arrested during the violence, including 6 juveniles, all were cited and released except for one felony arrest when members of the crowd began committing vandalism, destroying property and committing assaults. we declared an unlawful assembly to gain control the situation one firearm was found at the scene that was formed to rally against ice raids and deportations happening across the u.s. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says it will take time to process the hundreds of cases. and i wanted to be clear, we will file charges against those who are committing vandalism, violence and other acts that are criminal in san francisco. according to the interim

police chief, about half of those arrested were from outside san francisco. mayor lori says everyone has a right to have their voices heard peacefully, but that he won't stand for violence any form. we will not tolerate violent and destructive behavior and we will never tolerate violence directed at law enforcement or city workers. >> all right. that was our rob nesbitt reporting for us in san francisco. california. politicians continue to respond to president trump's deployment of national guard troops set to la and the talk of a temporary deployment of marines. hundreds of them kron four's. catherine heenan is. >> live in the newsroom with more on the latest developments there. good evening, catherine. good evening. well, just how bad things are in los angeles seems to depend on. >> who you talk to, but certainly california democrats say they are outraged by the president's use of the national guard in southern california. that includes state senator scott wiener.

>> they are apparently send the united states marines, the military on to the streets of that is not normal. that is not normal. that is the saw. the sign of an emerging authoritarian regime that uses the military to keep control in our local communities. >> what no one is really answer. how do you allow people express their concerns? >> without protest, evolving into destruction and violence in los angeles and to a lesser extent, san francisco, that is exactly what's happened. that is a tiny, tiny, tiny. >> minority of the protesters who are overwhelmingly peaceful and have every right in the world to protests. but of course, we tolerate violence, tiny minority or not. authorities have had their hands full. >> this violence that i've seen, it's disgusting. it's

escalated now since the beginning of this incident, what we saw the first night was was bad. what we've seen subsequent to that is getting increasingly worse and more violent. we had individuals out there shooting commercial grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you. >> and some of the things you're reading about in los angeles. thank goodness we sent out some wonderful national guide. they've really helped. and not a problem. so having out there, president trump has continued to defend his handling of the unrest in southern california. >> monday, former speaker nancy pelosi released a statement saying in part the trump administration's escalation and provocation inflames tensions and incites violence. all americans must be able to exercise their constitutional right to lawfully and peacefully protest. meantime, business people, workers and residents in l a have had enough. >> very bad. it's very bad

pyramid to. yeah, lawrence is here to give us an idea what we're >> they faced with. >> you know it you can get sometimes here pay here see plenty of low clouds and fog night morning hours. the good news breaks up during the middle of the day. kind of hugging the coastline. in fact, the drizzle continues. >> up toward the beaches even in the afternoon hours are going to see more of that likely overnight tonight and tomorrow morning, too. so low clouds already making a good run at it and making its way inside the bay. and so likely to feel some of the valleys as we head through the night into tomorrow morning. temperatures around the bay area, not bad. you're still in the upper 70's in a place like hawkins. 75 degrees livermore 70 right now in san jose. cool. 57, though, and half moon bay in san francisco checking at 60 degrees with some partly cloudy skies. but they're going to be plenty of clouds overnight tonight. it's tomorrow morning. the fog kind of hugging the coastline right now. and you can see couple patches just inside the bay pulling out just a little bit. that's not the only thing going on. look at the storms popping up over the sierra nevada. pretty active day in the high country. get the shot there. a lot of folks out there camping this time of

>> waymo has suspended service in parts of san francisco today. the company says the move comes after reports of violent protests erupting in the city last night. several waymo's we vandalized during the protests in the financial district. it happened outside the ice headquarters on sansome street statement from a waymo spokesperson says in part that we're aware of potential protest in san francisco and will not be providing rvice in the areas where protesters may be gathering out of an abundance of caution. waymo is also steering clear of downtown la because of ongoing protests. there. >> meanwhile, hundreds of migrants and their allies arrived to the state capitol today after a three-day walk from vacaville. the group did.

this is a form of protest against the mass deportations and tony salazar reports. >> and we're talking hundreds of these immigrant families and workers coming from all different walks of life in all different cities all over california. this three-day march, all is hosted by the northern california coalition for just immigration reform here and things really esparza 3rd stretch. this three-day strike kicked off here in davis a little after 08:30am, in the morning. here you have lots of folks holding up signs. some, of course, even calling up president donald trump and what he's done the past few days. other saying, you know, papers for everyone here, some of the signed even reading, you know, the people sick care agenda, love and protect each other. these are among just some of the signs that we've been seen. now, one of those participants is ruby here who joins us folks. are you from the local area or really help it come here? i think county about an hour away from here about an hour away from here, andrew beat. i

mean, what do you all calling for, you know, for our state and local officials here? >> we want to make sure that we're protecting immigrants. you know, every day, our community, both outside of their doors and we are facing all of these people patients. and we're asking for our leaders and our state officials to step up to protect immigrants paid a pathway to citizenship, to be more support, including paramedic help are from here and andrew. but something else you were talking to me moments ago is about the also the adequate funding for >> and no use of alcatraz travis air force base and even doubling prison for incarcerated immigrants here. i mean, is there anything else? i mean, how has immigration affected you personally? you know what essentially brings you out here because you've been taking part in all 3 days, right, right? yes, right. days. and i mean, we see every analysis going on. and in spite of that, we're here to say we will not be silenced. we will continue to fight for our right continue to fight for our communities. >> until we get a path

citizenship and so we get our lead us to continue to push with us to protect immigrants today and and all a everybody. thank you so much for your time. we really do appreciate it. and of course, they're on their way. >> to the state capitol there about less than 10 miles away. that is to the west. sacramento. >> and then as thereafter do reach the state capitol by about 04:00pm. when they get there, they're going to be holding a press conference going over what three-day strike it was all about and calling on local and state officials to do more when it comes to immigration reform. >> and that was tony salazar reporting for us. the u.s. justice department is moving forward with a lawsuit against an oakland coffee house over alleged discrimination. the owners of jerusalem coffee house on telegraph ave are being sued after accusations of them refusing to serve to customers who displayed star of david inside the business. the lawsuit alleges that on 2 occasions jewish customers were asked to leave repeatedly. the customers were also told they support genocide and war trespassing.

one of the incidents was posted online and then later condemned by mayor barbara lee and assistant attorney general with the doj. civil rights division commented on the lawsuit saying, quote, the justice department is committed to combating antisemitism and discrimination and protecting the civil rights of all americans. >> the controversial felton along san francisco's waterfront is now closed off to the public. valley court found the crossing the ferry building at embarcadero plaza is being fenced off. they say because of safety concerns. a spokesperson with the san francisco rec and parks department says a recent report made it clear that the fountain is a potential hazard. the report says the found this cracked corroded and missing parts, including a key support ride in one of the structures arms. the also contains hazardous materials like lead and asbestos. search and rescue operations are underway after a plane carrying 6 people crashed into the pacific off the coast of

point. loma near san diego. crews responded to the area yesterday afternoon. officials say the plane was found about 3 miles off the coast and oil slick was visible following the crash. it's not clear if the plane tried to land on the water or if the aircraft directly crashed into the ocean. alright, weather time here. as we get a live look at the bay bridge. and lawrence is here clear the air. >> yeah, guys. and we've had some pretty nice air quality around the bay area today. remember last week we had all that smoke from canada actually visiting the bay area. but now it's gone back home and out of the bay area. and that means we're clearing out skies very nicely. not from the fog. we ca plenty of that outside. in fact, a start to stretch back on shore. here's a live looking down from our mount tam cam. clouds already beginning to race back on shore as we speak. think tonight. yeah, it looks like a nice evening out there, but that fog is racing on shore. our quality much improved compared to last week. remember lot of the sensors we're starting to show up in

yellow here. some moderate amounts of clues now got one sensor parts of slow accounting. the east there otherwise are on the green. i think that's where we're going to be for tomorrow to air quality, looking good across the board as we're going to see nice fresh ocean, their sweep on shore that carry with a nonlethal fog. but it's also gonna bring that nice, clean air across the bay area, too. haney day around the bay area's. we've got some fog along the coastline. lots of sunshine, the valleys, thunderstorms erupting over the high country getting nasty up there. and parts of the northern sierra nevada right now. but overall, i think the high pressure going to start to nose its way in here just a little bit more. there's going to be little evenflo for this. we can see it build in just a little bit only come back down as we head toward latter part of the week. the temperatures cool down. but nice are kind of stuck in kind of similar to last week. so easy she goes. we've got some low clouds and fog stretching onshore tonight. think it's going make its way all the way to the tree of aliso. yeah. pretty deep marine layer out their news of that leads yeah. i guess what's more drizzle along the coastline. so folks out toward the beaches will tell you can get pretty damp, this kind of system here. so,

>> starting today, children under 18 in francisco will be able to pick up free summer meals. the city will serve what it describes as healthy free breakfasts, lunches and snacks monday through friday to those who need it. no id or proof of id is needed. there are 15 sites across the city, including several of the boys and girls clubs. the free meal service runs through august. 15th. it's part rain is expanding in the north bay. the sonoma marin area rail transit district are smart has been granted 81 million dollars for this expansion project. rail line. officials

say that the expansion will run the community's up through hills bergen, northern sonoma county. the money's coming from 2 state grants. the solutions for congested corridors and the local partnership, competitive programs and it's being matched by 187 million dollars. another secured funds. the award also includes additional 6 million dollars to acquire 0 emission locomotive for the smart railroad. and with worked, smart will serve. the newly opened windsor station north through hillsborough to the northern hills. berg city limits the project is expected to be completed by 2028. california appeals court in san jose has ruled that no, you're not allowed to hold your phone for navigation purposes by your driving. the case involved a man who got a $158 ticket in santa clara county for holding his phone in one hand while using his maps, he contested the ticket saying that he was only looking at the screen, not interacting with it, but that
