now on the kron. morning news. the legal battle over president trump. >> women of the national guard continues to escalate the latest step in that controversial case. plus, health care workers are going to be on the picket line outside ucsf benioff children's hospital in the east bay. this morning, a look at what they're demanding and why. and a fast-moving brush fire sparking chaos and

prompting evacuation orders in the south bay. how crews work to get those flames under control overnight. well, good wednesday morning and related what has brought in earlier on june 18th. i'm reyna harvey. >> alright, doesn't talk about that. warm up. and i think today's the warm day. good morning, john. yeah. today is the hot one of the forecast that really doesn't last much longer than one day reaching the 90's for inland areas and then where will right back down to those cooler feeling temps that we've been feeling a lot lately. let's start with your view outside. this is your view from mount tam. although you can't see very much just yet what you can see, some of the city lights down below in just a little bit of fog. having settled in the bay this morning. definitely not as crystal clear as yesterday was that that's ok. we do have some of that gray that is resulting in some cooling this morning as we do move into the afternoon,

though it is nothing but the sun and under those sunny skies. we are going to see easily our hottest temperatures in the forecast winds right now. not even directly out of the west rather of a northerly breeze at the moment. now, as we do roll into the afternoon, you're not going to get much of that ocean cool there for inland areas. that means inland temperatures going to be as warm as they will be. brett, what you've got a warm start already at 68 degrees while oakland at 55 santa rosa right at 50. so today does start with some morning gray for sure. but we do see that clearing rather quickly by 11:00am inland areas right on the cusp of 80 degrees already. so things will warm very quickly. >> free the structured in the right lane heading westbound on 80 the bay bridge. but that was cleared rather quickly. so 0 impact on your drive time. we're holding at 7 minutes right now. the mateo bridge at 12 minutes for your crossing.

and even though we do have a little low gray up above, it's not resulting in any visibility issues. things are rolling along just fine at both. the richmond, sandra fell and at the golden gate just got that fog streaming through the golden gate as we do kick off the morning. >> all right, john, the that a major wildfire in the south bay prompting evacuations as more than 155 crews worked overnirht trying those flames out. the fire burning nearly 100 acres in east side. san jose at 75% contained this morning. that moment following this since tuesday afternoon. he has details. >> it was a mix of high wind, tall, dry grass and the steepness of the foothills that allowed this fire to spread as fast as it did. now, fire crews do tell us, however, that they were well prepared in advance for one of the first big fires of the season. >> i let a lot of high. worried that, you know, it might come down this way. eventually flames covered

close to 100 acres in the foothills between milpitas and eastside san jose. tuesday evening. >> 150 personnel responded. and for water over the dry grass that san jose fire byrd exceedingly fast primarily in grass and light brush to its spreads very fast on its own. in addition to that, we had driven by the. >> fire likes to go up. he'll pitch about san jose fire says an evacuation orders hit several neighborhoods from grants plates to sierra road all the way into the deep foothills. >> not says the timing couldn't have been better seeing practically all of the south bay fire crews just wrapped up a wildfire training this past month. in addition to preparations like the wildland fire drill. >> the south bay incident management team also had an activation drill so we can practice that. >> looks back. start early head go all the way through field. i'm scared because like how about for some of the men? well, 6 horses. he's anxiously waiting to check on.

>> a friend up the road says the flames came within 200 feet of them. but as you saw, the smoke start to go down it was good about it. >> okay, because don't see any more just happy that we're seeing sun birds watching with their kids side. and so then they came running out here and then they're like, oh, my gosh, we seal the flames and everything. and so it's to to get bigger. the fire was under control within a couple hours. no injuries and no homes burned. >> and slowly, people making their way back home time. i have more trees in every color. treason. >> acquired jumped the route and just, you know. is that it happened that it didn't happen because it is for trees, kind of sparsely populated on the hill. we we're pretty given a benefit. >> now, if you want a better way to keep track of if you are in an evacuation order, a warning or not, fire crews tell us to download the genesis south and that's where many fire crews in california will be updating residents if

they are part of an evacuation order or not. for now reporting in san jose jacmel but kron 4 news. >> about 2500 health care workers in the east bay. they're gonna go on strike today. the call it on a plan to cancel existing contracts illegal. the national union of healthcare workers. they're going to be on the picket lines right outside of ucsf benioff children's hospital in oakland for the next 5 days. at issue contract. previously, the workers they've employed by the children's hospital. but now we're gonna have to transition to beat uc employees. they say that means cuts to take home pay and starting over with a new pension plan. and while you see argues it added benefits will offset the losses. protesters demonstrated right outside of the 9th circuit court of appeals. that was in san francisco tuesday afternoon. organizers say they want ice, the national guard and the marines to get out of la. it's now up to 3 judges to decide if it was legal for

president trump to deploy the national guard during the la rice protest and appeals court heard from the attorney for the trump administration. governor gavin newsom's office. on tuesday we get proffers dan kerman with the latest on that. >> what does it mean for the president to be unable with regular forces to execute the laws for a little over an hour, 3 judge panel with the 9th circuit court of appeals peppered attorneys for governor newsome and president trump with questions as the 2 attorneys argued whether or not the president has the legal authority to deploy the national guard to the streets of los angeles. know there is no rule for their court. >> play reviewing that decision. >> the attorney for the trump administration argued the judicial branchihas no legal authority to review such a decision by the president. and furthermore, his decision to deploy the guard does meet statutory requirements. >> the guard is essential to continue to safely enforce immigration laws and protecting federal buildings in los angeles. and just

mention, court is essential with this injunction, the state otherwise lives and property will get best or at least needs to some consideration. >> of whether there are more modest measures all in for the national guard before taking that great, extraordinary step. >> the attorney for the governor argued despite protests, ice is able to carry out its duties meeting. the president doesn't meet the requirements for deploying the national guard every day that this order remains in effect. it is causing harm. >> for nation's broader democratic tradition of separation of the military, from civilian affairs. >> and that is not just a problem for the 60 day presented appointment here. >> the question for this court will be do they agree with a lower court decision that the president didn't have the right to deploy the guard or will they side with the trump administration? it's not clear where the panel's going to go, but the 2 trump appointed judges seem to be inclined to

not support what the district court judge had ordered, which would mean they would rule in favor of trump's order. rory little is a constitutional law professor at uc law. san francisco simply affirming the trump order at this point is going to suggest that it's not going to be so rare and that the president can call out the national guard almost whenever he wants. that's a very dangerous position. and one would hope that the 9th circuit won't say that whatever the ruling is, it will likely be appealed to the u.s. supreme court. >> in the meantime, the california national guard remains on the ground in los angeles. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> well, this all comes as president trump has ordered ice to uptick daily arrests to about 3,000. he's trying to meet a goal and immigration raids. he's saying they're going to resume at hotels, restaurants and farms. the trump administration briefly pause roundups of those places after industry officials voice concerns over losing reliable employees. the city of san

jose. they are pledging 1 million dollars are trying to ensure immigrant community members get to legal help. they need. now. the city council unanimously approving the funding during their meeting last week. that bill came as the trump administration continues to ramp up ice activities. mayor matt mahan is saying expanding resources is the best city can do. >> a lot of mixed status. families, but a lot of people in our community living in fear not going to school, not going to work. this has impacts on all of us at the most basic level we have community members who are scared to report crime or be witness to a crime that doesn't make us safer. that makes us less safe. so we are going to stand up for immigrant community. we obviously cannot in any way interfere with federal law enforcement. that it's also not our role to carry out federal law enforcement. these dollars, though, are really meant to ensure that our community knows its rights has access to legal representation. and the due process is followed.

>> all right. 4 things you to know today. 11 union members, they've been released after they were arrested while protesting against budget cuts to public services in san francisco. more than a dozen city workers went to the board of supervisors meeting yesterday afternoon to oppose mayor daniel or his budget proposal. they hauled to the meeting for nearly 2 hours for your health. there's a highly contagious covid-19 subvariant its nickname spiking across california. some people are describing it as razor blade throat, even sore throat is not a new covid symptom. this was more severe. then as was first detected in april and now makes up 55% of the circulating virus in california. history is made in san mateo. the city has a first ever female police captain rvs. we'll step into that role the sunday after 20 years with the san mateo police department should be the first woman to ever hold that title. and the second highest ranking woman in the

suit also alleges police use force and intimidation trying interfere with reporters. constitutional rights and finally a state law that guarantees journalist access during protests la police department. they have not responded yet. this comes as mayor karen bass lifted the curfew in los angeles. >> party to address asking for a judicial warrant. >> new york city comptroller and mayoral candidate brad lander was apprehended by ice officers. he was accompanying someone to the immigration hearing yesterday. the scuffle with ice all caught on camera in the halls of the courthouse. he was demanding to see if there was a warrant to detain a man outside of federal immigration court when he was apprehended. he was released hours later. criminal charges have not been filed against lander. >> and while you're at that may have led cool and likely, but well, answer other end. >> u.s. senator alex padilla

of americans to stand up and keep. >> peacefully protesting against the trump administration's attacks on fundamental rights. a federal judge has actually extended an order blocking president trump's attempted ban on international students being admitted to harvard. the judge is still considering how richard quest for a preliminary injunction as its lawsuit against administration plays out. roughly 27% of harvard student bodies made up of students from outside the u.s. president. trump has also frozen billions of dollars in funding and exempted to revoke harvard's tax exempt status over claims liberal and anti-jewish bias. the university says those moves are unconstitutional, violating its first amendment right to free speech. as fighting in the middle east continues between israel and iran. lawmakers on capitol hill there. wade, whether the u.s. should get involved or not. some say congress should actually vote on it. meanwhile, this morning, an iranian spokesman said american intervention what's

triangle on twin peaks temperatures. the police are saying they responded to the report of vandalism around 12, 30 yesterday afternoon. they found the suspect actively spray painting the installation. police arrested him after a brief chase. but patrick carney, the founder of pink triangle, says he still has to fix the damage. >> a dam. it's 26 of the tarp. so we'll have to replace those tarps, which is a big chart because we would have to demand dismantle a whole area in order to replace them. so that's disappointing what i think do is just get some paint that matches the original color and pain over the black paint. however, that's a temporary fix and will still have to throw those turned away. >> carney also sent us these pictures of anti-transgender stickers. he says have been popping up near that installation. carney says he and several community members they've been scratching them out or cover them up with tape.

here. looking over san francisco. there's the very top of the sales first tower right there. >> the only building actually poking up through that low gray. that is sifted on in this morning. sure. it is a little fog year than yesterday was but this afternoon we get rid of all that low gray and we are on to some sunshine and some real heat. this northerly wind cutting off access to that cool ocean air for inland areas. so even though it is a bit foggy along the bay shore spots like brentwood, crystal clear and you're at 67 right now already just shy of 70 degrees and never having fallen out of the 60's last night inland spots well into the 90's today. as for temperatures along the bay short, a lot of us in the 70's to even 80's. so things will be warming up quick by 11:00am already on thspe of those inland areas. >> the bay bridge looking good. there's no backup at toll plaza just yet, although

that will likely start here in about 15 minutes. the cemetery, bridge to 12 minutes for your crossing and also looking just fine. so far. >> both the richmond, sandra fell in the golden gate or under gray skies. golden gate. do watch for some fog and even a little bit of mist out there. she make your crossing there. all right. on the eve of that in the south, a brush fire burning in san jose foothills. >> is mostly contained this morning. but now firefighters are working to try to determine how it started in the first place. was will tran is live in jose with that story. well. >> want to find out the cause? that's secondary. the first thing is to make sure that no homes are threatened and that this particular time they do have firefighters stationed throughout this particular area. this is ranch road. and you can see couple of fire units right behind me. i'm told they have about 3 of them all over this location just to make sure that pounce on the fire should start up again. now, let me show you video. it

certain neighborhoods to evacuate. the good news is all the evacuations. the mandatory evacuations have been lifted and everybody should be back in their homes this morning. as far as the damage to the fire. absolutely. it ripped through the hillside vegetation burned to the point where great now close to 93 acres have burned. it's 75% contained and keep in mind contain means basically trying to wrap your arms around it. so it does not continue to spread. it does not mean that it is out. but the good news is rain and no structures were damaged, but you better believe a lot of people very much rattled. looks back. start early head go all the way through field. >> i'm scared because like how about for some of that? that we have more trees in every

set to go on strike caregivers say they are speaking up about their needs. a fair contract. rovers joey horta is live in oakland with that story. joey? >> renay, ucsf union members out here claim that they are going to lose $10,000 in take-home pay because ucsf is canceling their contracts during a transition. unions representing about 2500 employees of any off children's hospital locations in oakland are launching today. strike. they say their contracts will be canceled in july and they're already losing some longtime members over the dispute at issue pay cuts. the national union of healthcare workers represents 1300 workers. most of them are not registered nurses. however, there will be registered nurses joining the strike to support their colleagues, ucsf benioff employees are transitioning to become uc employees. according to ucsf. so they're also

joining wider bay area. unions and ucsf says no one will be fired despite the rumors telling us in part, quote, some take-home pay may change because today many employees pay nothing toward their health insurance or retirement and are you see employment, though? they will contribute. ucsf says those employees will get better benefits long-term care as a result of this employee transition. that's coming up on july 6. the strike is set to get underway at 7 o'clock this morning and could continue all the way into this weekend. back to you. all right, joey thing for that report. ralliers took to the steps of san francisco city hall criticizing. >> a new rule about rv permits. it would actually limit parking of arby's to 2 hours citywide over 70 rosman has that story. >> working class people under on the steps of city hall.
