2:00 pm
>> 2, we are giving back to the community. we have a live report behind the scenes of a local food bank is kron 4 bills, boxes of food for local seniors. also being streets and bird kills east bay community cleaning up following hill fire. >> and if you've got whether another windy day out there
2:01 pm
that does bring elevated fire danger will talk about your forecast coming up. thank you for joining us here on kron for news at 2 o'clock today, i'm justine waltman. and right now several east bay communities are without power because pg e thinks that one of its power poles could get knocked down in the wind. >> and then start a fire. so here's a look now at pg e's outage map. areas highlighted in purple represent where the power shut offs are happening right now. and those include communities in alameda contra costa and santa clara counties. phd. does these power shut offs when the wind could cause trees to fall on power lines and then start a dangerous fire. officials are saying they do expect to turn the power back on by saturday afternoon. so we'll talk about forecast now and the winds that are of concern today side here, mount diablo with meteorologist. how broken to go on.
2:02 pm
>> now with how fast these winds are going this hour. yeah, you know, is it kind of interesting because i went outside for a walk from a lunch break and it was just whipping the wind here. san francisco, you can see right now we are at sustained winds of 25 miles per hour. i came back in the building and i could still hear the wind outside. that's how strong it is. so gusts obviously. well above that, you can see oakland up to 20 miles per hour as well. and this is a continuation of what we've had. and the problem is that we have a dot of dry grass is out there. and so today, again, having those gusts upwards of the, you know, 35 even 40 miles per hour means that puts us kind of in that near critical fire weather conditions, particularly when we get up in elevation. we've got some of those dry grasses. and that does include east pay. and santa clara hills, they are relatively vulnerable. my north bay have been seeing some of the humidity levels start to drop today. so today is the day to avoid doing anything. they can spark a fire. that is for sure. i was mentioning humidity levels. notice up in santa rosa. we've been about 28% today. so that is kind of dry spot right now across the bay area. vacaville even lower than that. but you can see conquer deliver more in the
2:03 pm
low 30's there and conquered at least it's not great, right? so we have kind of dry air, obviously a good portion of the western united states under red flag warning. and that does include some of our viewing area. now, this does kick in on saturday. this is saturday morning until sunday at 11:00am. and you can see if you're in solano county, yolo county, any of the areas kind of leading from vallejo all the way over towards sacramento. that does include you under that elevated fire danger. and now under that red flag warning. now outside of that, you can see the wind is blowing there as we take a look at the flag which i'm happy to say is back at the golden gate bridge. we have pretty nice temperatures today that are below average. so that's actually helpful and kind of combating against some fire danger right for at the high temperatures. that would be a much more situations you can see we're just sitting in the 60's 70's across the bay. right now, we're looking pretty good as we get into the evening as well. i'll be back in a bit. we'll talk more about your weekend. high wildfire. danger is what we'll talk about now is pg. e has
2:04 pm
actively turned off the power in parts of the east bay, which is where we find kron four's. lindsey ford. >> in livermore pg e has set up a community resource center for those affected by the power shut offs charging stations bags filled with water, snacks, blankets and even portable chargers pg e has temporarily shut off power in alameda county and contra costa county. all in all, it's under 1000 customers throughout the bay area. warm weather combined with windy conditions can cause downed trees to topple over power lines. when that happens, that's when there is that possibility of a power outage or even something that could lead to wildfire and debris flying through the air can get caught up in electrical equipment with a psps. what we have to do is allow the weather event to pass before we can start inspecting our lines. more customers are expected to experience a second wave of the power shut offs this weekend. we don't want to call a psps. it is not something that take lightly.
2:05 pm
but when safety is a real concern and all the factors are coming together, that is something we will do for the safety of our customers and the communities we serve in livermore, lindsey ford kron. 4 news. >> firefighters continue to mop up and keep an eye on hot spots in antioch. 2 days after a fire torched more than 350 acres of land and also threatened some homes. kron 4 such a call sheriffs the latest. >> fire trucks and engines making passes through the black diamond mines, regional preserve friday, crews monitoring burned out hillsides and running hoses lines along the preserve just in case planes rekindle. we will have a presence in this area for the citizens of this area, just rest we have lots of resources that are close by the contra costa county fire protection district worked with cal fire and the east bay regional park district to prevent the fire from reaching homes. but at one point shortly after it started wednesday night and evacuation warning was issued for the 150
2:06 pm
homes threatened, then quickly canceled. now on the first official day of summer battalion chief bob atlas says this fire should serve as a wake-up call for the east bay, even though we were in 100 plus degree weather in the humidity's, we're not down in the single digits or in the teens that just shows you that situations like this could happen regardless of what the weather circumstances are, light display, what the fire department dozier. >> they tell you move the bacon back there. do it. >> it's going to save your house. don't gardener's house was not blanketed with fire retardant like some of his neighbors. homes were, but he credits defensible spacing and clear instructions from first responders on the scene for saving his property far came so >> policeman knocked on my door. real loud. i come running out. the fire was already in the back of my house. chief atlas as have a plan for the next big fire and escape route and meeting place for your family and listen to

authorities when they say leave the immediate leave, the area immediately. >> don't hesitate go now. and that goes for all of us in antioch, philippe djegal, all kron. 4 news. >> and stay up to date with the latest on wildfire season here in the bay area. you can go to our website kron 4 dot com for the latest information. the martinez refinery company reported some flaring earlier this morning. residents nearby may have noticed a smell in the area. the refinery says flares are an essential part of the facilities engineered safety systems designed to safely manage excess. gas isn't pressure. people can view real-time air quality measurements on the refineries website. california's challenge of the trump administration's military deployment in los angeles, return to a federal courtroom in san francisco today. a u.s. district judge put off issuing any additional rulings and instead asked for briefings from both sides by noon on monday and whether the act

prohibits troops from conducting civilian law enforcement on u.s. soil. if that's being violated in los angeles during kron, 4 news at noon we spoke with you see law, a professor. roy little about this issue. >> i think california will ask him to consider what are the facts on the ground right now in los angeles? you know it is it true that today the regular forces are not able to protect the federal law enforcement efforts that ice is engaged those are the subject of protests. but the protest is not a rebellion. so, i will say, well, what are the facts today? is the troops order still valid? is it still necessary? and are they doing more than just protecting federal property in federal law enforcement? are they actually and forcing state civil criminal law which would violate the posse comitatus act. and he's really going to wait to hear from the party's. what did they think is next step in this issue?
2:09 pm
>> this comes one day after an appeals court allowed the president to keep control of the national guard troops that he deployed in response to protests over immigration raids despite some opposition from governor newsom. today, kron 4 celebrating the 29th anniversary of our parent company, nexstar media all day. our team is volunteering across the bay area giving back to the community that we serve. and one of the nonprofit's we're spotlighting today is the san francisco marin foodbank kron four's >> joins us now live from the warehouse where our team is packing up boxes for people in need and they'll get to eat this food. tonight. teresa. >> this is all going to be packed up. and i just want to let you know that we broke the record that we had a goal of 500 boxes rights era. yeah, did. and then how many did we look, we got 672 boxes. more than 1500 pounds of dry goods. i think sarah was the key
2:10 pm
person and she was a break we're going to the goal. i'm very competitive. so i wanted to break the going. obviously for a good cause. so why would you not want to brand the glass? what it's all about, you know, kind of putting walking the talk, right? we can talk about volunteering. can talk about giving back. but here we especially when like if you can give financially. >> then you can give your time, right? like take an afternoon. the kids like you have today my kids. i was like get off the couch. we're going to go down here. make a difference. going bag way. so here we are with grandson grabbed, brought his kids out here as well. so what like about coming out everything. it's the best i love, volunteering, period and to do it with your co-workers and your family like your actual family and your work family, it's and it's nice to you know, so i kind can't get behind him. i raise he was getting trouble for getting behind hundreds and so we can't get gram trouble.
2:11 pm
>> so one of the things i think is really cool. i drag my girls. here was show them what difference can feel like to actually do something. i. like i volunteered as a kid. i think it's enormously important, too. >> give back to your community and to learn to do it when you're a kid so that you're not like trying to incorporate that in your life as an adult where like feel awkward or weird? it's have skin in the game 100% and the way things are going now like trying to live in the bay area and pay for or it is a mess. it's a total mess. so but, you know, we interact with people all the time who are coming here for food and you wouldn't even know it because they're working and it's just so hard to make ends i was going to say then you add inflation. we don't we talk about don't know. don't talk to me about inflation just going say let's have one instead of like 2 cares for general, kind of i

2:17 pm
continues to bring concern from across the globe. many other nations are urging for both peace and diplomacy. but president trump has not given his final answer as to what he wants to do. >> president donald trump says he'll decide within 2 weeks whether or not to join israel in its strikes against iran. time to see whether or not people coming that sense. you 15 want prizes. we are racing to water that while israel and iran continue to trade missiles, united nations pushes for a peaceful outcome. i have a simple and clear message. gave us a chance. the un secretary-general encourage talks between israel and iran to simmer down escalating tensions. it on defending itself against about about a technician at ahn's. top diplomat calls this unjust war imposed on the iranian people and accused israel of committing war crimes. that

2:19 pm
order to work with israel. but at the same time, democrats are still worried about bringing the u.s. into this conflict, which is why many of them are more than willing to bring this legislation forward, which would limit the president's ability to go ahead with this unless there is congressional approval. when you're looking at the republican side of this, we've seen that there is a fair amount more of lawmakers on the republican side who have said that if the president does decide to go ahead and work with israel on attacking iran. they say that it would be justified and seen as self-defense. >> basil, john, live for us there in dc. thank you. and we'll talk about our bay area forecast right now with this live look outside from our camera on top of mount tam still shaking a little bit windy out there. but is it officially summer now? cuyler do we have it is all most, although it's tonight it's tonight that we specifically get there about 07:45pm tonight. but >> states today, right where they're i think we're there. we definitely are windy again today. no doubt about that. you see right off of the crop
2:20 pm
are ceos there. the wind in san francisco has ramped up and we're going to see it. get it up a little higher even before we pull back to this evening. but obviously, that is a little bit of a concern. but we have such dry conditions out there. these are the gusts currently that we're looking out for. you can see upwards of 30 35 miles per hour. and as we get into the rest of the afternoon and evening, it really doesn't go anywhere until the overnight. even then, though, still kind of windy right tomorrow. we're going to see more of the same. and then as we get into sunday, that's when we'll finally start to see things get a little bit better. so fire danger is slight around the bay area today. and you can see into tomorrow it will be a little bit less on our saturday, but still present. and then as we get to sunday, that's when things finally get a little bit better. we should also start to get a little more moisture return from our marine layer at that point. but we're not going to get a whole lot tonight. that's for sure. temperatures right now. 61 degrees in san francisco. 79 to santa rosa. that's my warmest spot yesterday. got up to 86 in santa rosa. also is one of the warmer spots. but
2:21 pm
you can see that we're just 68 livermore, mid 70's and conquered 70 degrees in san jose. so for most places we are below average. we have gotten some sunshine out at half. moon bay wasn't sure. today we're going to make it happen. but it did just kind of breakthrough. so pretty nice day there, too. and you can see stormtracker showing just that little tiny bit a marine layer there along the coastline that has finally given up as we zoom out notice to our north. that is where that low pressure system is that it telling you about. that's the one that's kind of keeping our temperatures relatively cool. so that will be the case today and tomorrow and then it will start to move along. so when you take a look at your 70 forecast here, you can see that the temps will pull up a little bit tomorrow. a little bit more on sunday and then get back to kind of normal as we get into monday. but the wind, we've got to keep the wind, unfortunately until sunday. >> thank you, kyla. let's talk sports. and despite all the hype surrounding caitlin clark coming to chase center, her team walked away with a loss. the golden state about greece beat the indiana fever. 88 to 77 kron 4. scott reese brings

back. you can see that we do have that onshore flow and it is very windy out there today yet again, temperature wise, though, were relatively cool. us are talking about santa clara. you know, right now, san jose's about 70 degrees, obviously a little cooler than say santa rosa, where up to 79. so we've got a little mix of temperatures that all of it kind of seeing below where we should be this time of year, which would be in those kind of mid 80's. when does the story? that's the one that's not gonna give up. so things are going to feel a little cooler than even the temperatures you can see right now sustained winds at san francisco at 25 miles per hour. but nevada is at 22 half moon bay's at 22. you can see all across the bay area. we're just very, very gusty out there. it is officially the first day of now the official time for that parcel says is 7.42 this evening. obviously, today temperatures have been a little bit unseasonably cool and got me thinking, let's talk about the solstice is and why this happens. it's kind of all about sun angles really and where the sun is striking the earth. so we'll go to the spring equinox that we had. that was back in march 20th. and that's when the sub was
2:34 pm
directly above the equator. and that is that everybody gets 12 hours of daylight, 12 hours of night. now we're going to go to what's happening today, which is our summer solstice and that means that the sun is directly over the tropic of cancer. so that means you get longer days in the northern hemisphere and to get shorter days in the southern hemisphere. and so if you are in the arctic circle, it's 24 hours of daylight right now. if you're in antartica bottom, right, they get 0 hours and i was just checking oslo, norway. they have their sunrise at 3.30, this morning. and there sunset is about quarter to 11 tonight. so kind of incredible, beautiful place. if you've ever been there, though, i have to say the golan sculpture park. my favorite thing there. but yeah, good time revisit when they got off that day. let go. and i were going to warm it up a little bit tomorrow. still windy tomorrow by sunday, breezy conditions should start to subside. >> happening today, vice president jd vance says in los angeles he will deliver a message about, quote, law and order. and this is coming on
