joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm dan thorn the u.s. department of education has found california. >> has violated title 9 by allowing transgender girls to compete on girls. sports teams title 9 is a federal law forbidding discrimination based in education. the federal education department made the announcement today proposed a resolution calling on california to ban all transgender athletes from girls and women's sports as well as stripping those athletes of records titles and awards. if the state rejects this proposal, the education department could move to halt the state's federal education funding. the lgbtq+ rights organization equality, california issuing a statement tonight saying in part the u.s. department of education's findings are a dangero s distortion of title 9 and a direct attack on transgender youth in california. the state has 10 days to comply with the

federal resolution. well, bay area school districts are also responding to the trump administration's accusations tonight, the superintendent of the mount diablo unified school district says he's worried about any potential funding cuts because of this alleged violation. >> our federal funds, the biggest, the biggest paulo. i mean, the biggest amount of federal funds that receive is around title one. and that has to do with our low-income students with our english learners, students who have unique needs things to that nature. so when you know, when those funds are being challenge or there's uncertainty around those funds, that, of course, we're extremely concerned about that because it is meeting the needs helping help us meet the needs of our most media students. >> and all of this is happening in san francisco is getting ready to host its annual pride celebration this weekend from mainstage performances at civic center to the pride parade down market street on sunday kron

four's rob nesbitt reports on how organizers and the grand marshals are getting ready. more than a million people are expected to take part in san francisco pride events this weekend on wednesday, organizers introduce the city to this year's grand marshals. street closures are already up in anticipation for the crowds at pride in san francisco. >> organizers gathered wednesday at the dawn to welcome the parade's grand marshals, including emmy-winning comedy writer and producer harper steel. i didn't hesitate, but i was a little shocked. still gained popularity in the 2024. netflix documentary will and harper highlighting a road trip she took with friend will farrell to share her coming out. experience as a trans woman still has been to san francisco many times, but sunday will be her first time attending. the pride parade is very important we all stand up not just for trans people people other grand marshals voted on by the community were also in attendance wednesday. it's really important that we recognize what they do in this community, especially these days and what they're facing. executive director of san francisco pride. suzanne ford

johtravel and rob nesbitt, who you just heard from that airs tomorrow night at 06:30pm. to the spain. our firefighters are calling it a close call. crews were able to contain the fire to 4 acres, but they say the location and the terrain made that fight a challenge. kron four's sara stinson has more. >> the fire started here on kirker pass road on this drive to rein right as people were heading home from work and trying to get to a concert nearby. however, multiple agencies responded quickly and contained it to 4 acres just as people packed into the toyota pavilion in concord for show, a fire erupted 2 miles away. cal fire says a van caught fire on kirker pass road near hess road around 5.30, wednesday night. the driver took off in flames, continue to spread. police shut down the road near the pavilion as fire crews worked to gain control of the fire. but between.

>> concord and pittsburgh. so rush hour traffic time gaining access to this location is always a challenge. within an hour, firefighters stopped it from spreading cal fire battalion chief brian goff attributes that to the quick response from multiple agencies fire had their their helicopter east bay regional parks brought their helicopter and then we brought her our air helicopter and our air tankers and stuff around the helicopters are making a bucket drops, the drop in the water, but the aircraft did not do any retardant drops. goff says if the winds have been stronger, the fire could have spread further on this dry in steep terrain on any other given day in this general area, the it could be anywhere between a 10300 acres. wind-driven driven. >> it could have much, much worse. fires starting in remote locations like this. the travel quickly through. >> dry fuels on steep terrain can attack a large number of homes. again, this is a an impressive stop by the crews to keep the so small.

half moon bay where it was 58 degrees. typically we would be at 72 degrees. so here is that stratus. it's cloudy tomorrow morning as we get up and it'll be slow to warm up is all the extra moisture and all the status is going keep us from getting to one too quickly back to you. then. >> deputy, thanks a lot. cisco's school board has adopted a balanced budget for the coming school year. its in response to a massive structural deficit caused by years of overspending. the budget includes cuts to programs and reduced funding for non classroom positions in the schools. >> please, that the district didn't need to lay off teachers. so i think those are all positive. major concern is professional development implementing new programs and curriculum and combining class rooms, but then reducing professional development. and we want teachers to be supported. so the students are successful as those changes are made. >> school officials say fiscal challenge is still remain

because the district is still relying on 126 million dollars in reserve funds to balance the budget this year. and next year. state university getting some much needed money. state lawmakers announcing the launch of the sonoma state commitment initiative. the program will start with 45 million dollars, which will go to restore some faculty positions and academic degrees offered on campus earlier this year. the university announced that it would have to cut its entire athletics program as well as several degree programs. this money's in the new state budget which will be voted on later this week. that money will go towards investing in new academic degrees and expanding the schools nursing program. it will also help fund athletic programs for the next few years. san jose mayor matt mahan sharing the work that he's done on homelessness and housing to a group in san francisco this evening. the south bay mayor was at manny's in the mission to share his ideas and how both san francisco and san jose can make government work better

protect us from cyber threats, counter terrorism under the all long list of other threats that we face every day. >> meanwhile, homeland security says it is closely monitoring intelligence but is staying tight-lipped on tracking methods. the golden gate bridge highway and transportation district could be at risk of losing millions in federal transportation funding from the trump administration unless it rescinds policies that discourage racism and implicit bias also known as dei back in april, the u.s. department of transportation announced all federal transportation grants. we'll have to follow new terms and conditions, including rejecting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. the bridge could lose 400 million dollars in grant money. french officials are holding a meeting on friday to discuss their next steps. the special olympics celebrating 30 years today was the law enforcement torch run here in san francisco. it is one of the

biggest fundraisers for the games. >> this towards represents unity. it connects every person's city and team taking part in these games. symbolizes the idea that everyone belongs and that no matter your path. you are part of something bigger. the torch run is also a commitment that we continue just support those with disabilities and build a a country and a world where everyone is value. >> over the years the run has raised more than 20 million dollars here in northern california. and the torch run helps to kick off the special olympics. northern california summer games. and on friday, kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan will be one of the hosts at the games and hopefully the weather cooperates. >> for the big event i'm forecasting perfect weather for college. she forecast that her agreement in worksop. nice. we're in such a beautiful weather pattern. it is seasonable. it's exactly what to expect for this time

of year. and that's what we get. we get lots of clouds and fog at the coast moving inland and then temperatures are little bit cooler than normal. but the pattern is about what to expect for late june. so temperatures this afternoon peaked a little below normal. in fact, a lot below normal in half moon bay should be 72. we got 58 up in san francisco. we got 60. typically we'd be at 67 but inland. we're pretty close to normal. so it's absolutely a beautiful pattern. and here it is. got the low clouds, the status of the coastline. it moves in overnight and st pulls back toward the coastline day in and day out with varying degrees of blanketing. so the blanket this morning was really wide across the bay area. not quite as dramatic tomorrow morning, but still we're in a great shape. and typically we see see those winds really kick up in the afternoons. not exactly what we get this afternoon tomorrow afternoon and into friday as well. not quite as strong on friday. temperatures okay. numbers in the mid 60's. a

little warmer than today and right along the beaches. we're gonna keep it off the close to 60 59 degrees in elk are on the peninsula. it's fabulous numbers in the 60's to the 70's start to head southward. the course little bit warmer woodside. 72 degrees. and then here is the south bay with some numbers in the 70's and 80's 77 for santa clara and san jose. and looking at a few 80's in places such as livermore. one of the hot spots at 87 in pleasanton at 81 horrendous. 75 richmond. an see in the north bay, the usual spots are kind of warm such as jan philipp 88 degrees and santa rosa at 85. a look at the next 7 days shows that beautiful pattern. 7 days. plus 3 cause. it's the 10 at 10 and you see just some fluctuations, especially warm on friday and then especially warm again next wednesday. and you can see right along the bay shoreline is pretty steady as she goes with some minor fluctuations. so we're in for a real treat this week. then.

cathy, thanks a lot, allan. me to county deputies are investigating 3 gas station robberies that happened in castro valley. >> investigators say these robberies happened early this morning along castro valley boulevard. one of those gas stations that was hit was a 76 gas station. deputies say the suspects took cash and cigarettes from each of ose convenience stores that were hit. no one was hurt by these robbers. but the sheriff's office says still looking into whetr or not all 3 of these were somehow connected. they are asking for any information. and if you have any to give them a call. take a look at this place in alabama are searching for a burglar who stole money wearing a scooby-doo costume. that's right. doo the bandit wearing a full-on doo. body suit along with the mask there. as you can see, apparently it was complete with a hood. so it had the ears in the face and all that when he pulled that up, this

was reportedly at a gas station in tuscaloosa yesterday morning. of course, homes to home, rather to the university of alabama. apparently he was gone by the time officers arrived. so scooby-doo is still on the loose tonight. a new housing community is opening in hayward for victims of domestic abuse. what's known as betty's village sits on the city's east side. it's been a shelter since the 1970's, but now it's gotten a major upgrade. it features a departments with enough space for 54 single men or women with their children. each apartment has a bedroom, bathroom kitchen and living here. >> they had family to go to if they had a safe place to go to, they would be there. nobody wakes up and says that they want to come to a shelter. but when that is their only option, we want to make sure that this is the best option that they have available, that they have their own space. they have their own privacy and a place to really restore and heal during some of the most hardest times of their life.

aaron wilson, aaron joins us now live from chase center at aaron. this thing at us on the edge of our seat for the entire night. what was it like for you taking this thing in? >> scott, you know, as you said, it was a tremendous game that erin aaron wilson. but if i could shoot like like martin, you know, i would take that name, but i wouldn't quite that much of a shooter when i played the sport. either way. tonight was a great game. put on, of course, by the golden state outcries against the new york liberty. here's the thing. this is the 3rd time they played them this season. the first time much earlier this season was about a month ago. the first game was a blowout. the second game they lost only by 5. but in that game, sabrina ionescu was she would offer 24 points. brianna stewart, he went off for 27 fast forward to today. they only lost by 3 hill to bring it to one point through 3 quarters. they almost, you know, had the game just about the entire way. they tied the game 7 times. they had 16 lead changes in this one. just to give you a little picture of
