it's still if there and people are bleeding. >> reed: an animal attack at a retirement community. the unlikely creature that had residents scrambling for cover. >> announcer: news 3 starts right now. . >> latoya: a marine corps veteran shot dead as police say he drove his car right at them. thanks for staying with us. i'm latoya silmon. >> reed: i'm reed cowan. a year later a public hearing are seeing. all those moments leading up to the death of 55-year-old james francis smith. news 3's denise rosch has our top story tonight. >> reporter: to this day no one can say why this happened. smith was shot and killed right here in this parking lot after police say he intentionally rammed a metro cruiser then drove directly at two clark county school district police officers. a public hearing today laying

that's metro police officer gill calling dispatch after a bizarre encounter. police say 55-year-old james francis smith sideswiped the officer in traffic near wigwam and maryland parkway last november. gill followed smith to nearby desert bloom park when this happened. >> he tried to ram two parked cars. shots fires. >> reporter: four year later the radio traffic and police photos are being released in this fact finding review. a chance for ask questions through an appointed ombudsman david fisher. >> did your investigation determine anything with respect to a medical episode. >> no. >> reporter: the incident was captured on police body cameras. school district officers were at the park investigating an unrelated fight call, interviewing two juveniles when they say smith drove right at them. both officers opened fire,

gauge shotgun, two swords, a police baton and a large knife in smith's car. in the month before the shooting police learned smith had just gone through a divorce and was recovering from colon cancer. neighbors say he had started acting erratically shaving his head and eyebrows. threatening a long-time friend with a gun. his ex-wife telling investigators this. >> she found evidence of marijuana use and believed he was also using >> reporter: a tragic fall for a man with no criminal record shot dead in a public park. smith had worked as corrections officer on rikers island in new york for many years before moving to las vegas about ten years ago. as for the officers involved? the district attorney's office has already determined they will not face charges. denise rosch, news 3. >> reed: an update to the tragic death of a 7-year-old boy in our valley. the boy's mother is under arrest

the mother malone joins her friend kenneth robinson in county jail also charged. he was arrested sunday after the boy, richard finley, was found with what police call obvious signs of abuse. police say malone was home at the time of the alleged abuse. >> latoya: the city of las vegas ranks number one for burglaries. that's according to numbers from the fbi. the list compares cities with more than a million people. there were more than 14,000 brea year. don lee with security assessment group says there are easy ways that you can protect your home. he recommends getting a security door. he says the most inexpensive solution is to change the dead bolt screws in in your front door. >> go to home depot and buy three, three-and-a-half inch long screws. take out the quarter inch long screws that the manufacturer has in there and put these in.

nevada when it comes to burglary? boulder city. >> reed: three days left in decision 2016. that's when the verdict gets delivered. three days after we sat down with republican joe heck we caught up with his opponent, democrat catherine cortez-masto. on the last day of early voting she was at an east side cardenas market. the line of last-minute voters snaked through the parking lot. tuesday we talked to heck emails. today we asked cortez-masto if she thinks hillary clinton is trustworthy. >> i have no problem with trusting hillary. i think she is by far heads and shoulders above trump as the better person to be commander-in-chief. she's got the temperament, experience, background. i trust her in foreign affairs as well as the economy here. and that's not donald trump. he's got no background, no experience. he's got a campaign built on divisive rhetoric.

catherine cortez-masto as she made her campaign stop but we put the full interview on news3lv.com. cortez-masto is joined cardenas at mexican superstar angeliquea. >> latoya: fellow republicans say crescent hardy deserves to be re-elected. they say hardy has a track record of accomplishment they claim his opponent does not. hardy the incumbent in the fourth district is running against democrat and state this morning paul anderson who is the majority leader says kihuen has done nothing in carson city. >> as i went from a freshman into -- even on the republican leadership side, you had a lot of democrats that were involved in a lot of the process. whether it was suggesting amendments, making changes to the bill, trying to make sure it was the best policy it could be. reuben kihuen was absent in all of those conversations.

i created the first ever grants for low income students to go to college. today over 1500 students are going to college thanks to the grants. >> latoya: that's kihuen himself responding. his campaign called hardy a political stunt. close to 44,000 clark residents cast their votes on the final day for early voting. some voters found themselves dealing with glitches at the polls. new at seven, our faith jessie looked into why a number of registered voters might not h hundreds of thousands of clark county residents made it out to the polls to cast their vote early. but not everybody walked away with this sticker. she's nevada resident. after waiting in the earl voting line she was told she couldn't cast a vote. >> they say i'm not registered. there's something something wrong. >> reporter: the active airforce member and mother of

registered. so i said no i was not expecting this was going to happen today. >> reporter: other voters found themselves ballotless for different reasons. many with an enactive status or those who use a service provider to register were out of luck. they unknowingly missed the deadline for service providers like the dmv which is not the same as election offices. >> we did notify customers the last day in office they could register to vote to be october 8th. >> reporter: those who couldn't cast their votes expressed confusion but officials say the rules were clear. >> state law is very clear. registration has to take place in my office. that in person or online registration would have made them eligible if they had done it by october 18th. >> reporter: still those who say they registered far before the deadline slipped through the cracks. >> those individual circumstances where it may not work out we can't speak to why that's happened.

>> reed: new at seven frightening moments for young children on a school bus. you hear that child screaming mommy. police in cincinnati releasing this startling video of an assault on a school bus last month. in the video you can see a heated fight between a parent and bus driver.

police say the parent blocked the bus with their car praied the door open and confronted the driver. she was upset because her daughter couldn't board the bus late. two other adults boarded and intervened. the driver suffered minor injuries and the parent faces misdemeanor assault charges. >> latoya: details in the deadly crash between a school bus and city bus. this security video was taken moments before the deadly bus crash. you can see a car slowing down then a bus barreling down the the video. though the speed limit is just 30 miles per hour. investigators say the bus kept going and slammed into a city bus heading in the opposite direction killing a driver and four passengers. the school bus driver glen chappelle was killed. the maryland motor vehicle administration suspended his authorization to operate a commercial vehicle two months before the crash because he failed to provide medical certification. investigators believe the school

hour when it hit the city bus. investigators are waiting on autopsy results to determine whether chappelle suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control of the bus. >> reed: a frightening experience for several people at a senior home in florida. a 911 caller needed help after a squirrel of all things began scratching and attacking residents and staff. listen to this. >> it's in our activity room and it's jumping on people and biting them and scratching them. people are two resident and staff members suffered serious bites from a squirrel. the wild animal latched on to one of the retirees sinking its teeth into her leg. soon after the assault the animal was put outdoors. all three people injured were released from the hospital and are all doing well. >> latoya: wow. unbelievable. from burning rubber to classic cars this is the sema show in las vegas and it's exploded over its 50 year life. it began under the grandstands

into the upper 60s now. winds are fairly calm and are going to be light to tomorrow as well. at 75 degrees here washington and mount hood. low 70s st. rose and at liberty high school. at the lakes in mid-70s at the moment. 69 pahrump. low 70s boulder city as well as lake mead. 40s on the mountain where we're also seeing very nice winds. you hardly noe another busy night in las vegas. we're looking at a wonderful friday night forecast. we're going see calm weather continue. we talked about our friends in arizona seeing very active weather. that area of low pressure will continue pushing eastward out of our area. we're focusing on this trough right here. we have a ridge in place. that's actually going to keep us from seeing too much change in our weather pattern as we fast forward the next few days.

temperatures continue through the weekend. overnight tonight a clear night. winds continue to be light for the rest of the evening. lows won't be as cool as last night. 70 at mead. 36 on the mountain. 43 for pahrump. highs tomorrow will be kind of like today. a lot of 80s across the map in las vegas. by the time you wake-up we'll be in the low 60s at seven. upper 60s by nine. by lunchtime mid-70s expected. a wonderful day looking at temperatures in the low 80s. lots of sunshine. those sunny skies, hope you are not going to get sick of it, are going to continue for quite awhile. with a mixture of 70s and 80s on the map for the next seven days the only thing i have to point out at this point is setting your clocks back an hour on sunday. that's it. >> reed: that's all she's got for us. a great forecast f. thank you. time for a look at what's
