6:00 am
if you're just waking up on this tuesday, october 4, i am pam cook. i am dave clark, and let's check on your weather. steve paulson knows everything. >> we are counting on it. >> a little bit of rainfall with thunderstorm activity on sunday, pretty good, and i know that marin county did not that much, but sonoma county did, and a few reports of a half inch of rain. occidental had 42 100s, and bodega bay had 19 100s, and kentfield picking up .03. there are still low clouds around, and mostly sunny on tap later today with most of the rain showing on the north coast, humboldt county and another system at the pacific northwest. 50s on the temperatures, and
6:01 am
the humidity is holding the temperatures up, 57 campbell and saratoga, and everybody is pretty close in the mid to upper 50s. temperatures today ending up in the 60s and 70s, and after wednesday england temperatures -- inland temperatures will pop up. we are seeing slow traffic to be sure, getting around to the berkeley curve slow traffic and into the bay bridge toll plaza. there will be waiting to do it the toll plaza, 20 to 25 minute delay. looking at the commute where the traffic is going to be busy in the east bay on i-80 80 -- i- 880 and once you get through the dublin interchange, slow traffic all the way down to the
6:02 am
sinole grade. san jose still looking decent out of downtown for the trip in a san jose silicon valley. some people from the valley could be coming to san francisco for the dream force, taking over part of sonoma for the week. just know there are a lot of crowds in for that event. 6:02 am. there were six armed robberies in the east bay, and the police are working together to see if the holdups are connected. we will talk about the similarities in the cases.>> reporter: and all six incident the robbers confronted the victims in the driveway or the garage of their own home, and one of the robberies happened here in orinda. the couple was leaving the grocery store and they were attacked when they drove into their driveway. the school board vice president carol brown was shot in her husband was pistol-whipped
6:03 am
during the robbery in the driveway and both are expected to recover. similar robberies happened last week during a four-day period in unincorporated denville, pittsburg, antioch written word and for no -- brentwood and pinole. they said they drove off in a white sedan. >> since this has happened multiple times, it is concerning that there could be a link or that there is a serial group. >> reporter: the orinda police chief said is unclear what connection the crimes have, but the similarity, "certainly has not gone unnoticed, and communication between our agencies absolutely has taken place. "later we hope to speak to the orinda police chief to discuss the possible link between the robberies, and how the
6:04 am
departments are sharing notes on these cases. >> that will be interesting to hear from the police chief, thank you. it is 6:04 am. donald trump is now talking about the new york times report of his almost $1 billion tax laws and the possibility that he may not have had to pay federal taxes for 18 years.>> i have been saying from the beginning of this campaign how ridiculous and, complex and unfair tax system. it is an unfair system and so complex that very few people understand it, but fortunately i understand it.>> trump said he legally use the tax laws to his benefit, and his campaign said that the documents sent anonymously were illegally obtained. hillary clinton is weighing in on donald trump not paying federal income taxes, and the campaign appearance in ohio,
6:05 am
hillary clinton says it is important to recognize what paying zero taxes means to the country. >> zero taxes mean zero for the veterans, zero for the military, zero for pell grants to send the young people to college, 04 health, zero 04 education.>> clinton says that she and her husband have released their tax returns and they play -- pay a lot of taxes and says she is grateful to contribute to the country. tonight the focus is on the running mates, the vice presidential nominees tim kaine and mike pence will face off in their first and only debate before the election, and we have are political analyst here. first of all, in this race, how important are the vice presidential candidates and getting the vote?>> in this race and in any race they reflect upon the candidates,
6:06 am
their performance reflects upon the candidates, and obviously mr. trump and hillary clinton are still the main show. on election day, who ever is the vice presidential candidate is not the reason you will vote for that particular ticket, but it can be the case. a pool or -- a poor performance were reflect badly on the main candidate. and i don't want to sound like it is a negative, but you don't want to have one of those moments like dan quayle had with his vice president that compared himself in the debate, and comparing himself to john kennedy, perhaps out of nervousness. and he was telling them you are not john kennedy and putting him in his place. and you don't want a sarah palin moment where she in her interview with katie couric said things that she was obviously way behind in the research for what she was supposed to be talking about in the campaign.
6:07 am
the sarah palin selection with the john mccain decision to put her on the ticket her him.>> -- hurt him.>> but it could affect either one of them negatively. >> these contests are not won or lost in terms of points, they reinforce the preferences, but they could have an impact in this case on the ticket in that way. with these and vigils, tim kaine and mike pence, i don't think you will see a lot of mistakes because they are good communicators, similar backgrounds and served in congress or for the government. >> there personalities are similar. >> yes, but i like the fact that they have relationships in congress, and they are comfortable with them. they are both comfortable in their own ways, and their main job is to reassure the voters
6:08 am
that they are safe second choices. we have had president said been unable to finish the term, and the vice president has to step in. you want to know that the person that will do that could be a comfortable choice. and michael dukakis, and a lot of people watched them that night and said that he should benefit top of the ticket and michael the caucus should've been on the vice president ticket . people like this presents. >> you have had a chance to watch them both, and how do you think there will be avenue to connect to the viewers to the television?>> each differently, they are very much different people, and i'm kind of interested in seeing in some ways how mike pence does because so much of his time recently in the news clips is spent defending or explaining what donald trump really meant when he tweeted this or said that, or what that tax issue
6:09 am
means. and tim kaine on the other hand, you are right in that the personalities are different. he is easy, moves around like a young puppy, full of energy, life and happiness, and has a big smile on his face all the time. he is more subdued, mature looking and sounding in that way. their styles in terms of delivery will be very different, and that affects how people think about them. but i think both of the gentlemen are generally likable, not caring the negatives that the candidates kerry. -- carry, and in that sense it will be a number of styles and not necessarily the position on issues.>> it is nice to see mike pence in a situation where he is not constantly having to explain donald trump or what the ticket is thinking about. i will say this for mike pence, and i'm not worried about tim
6:10 am
kaine, but i think mike pence, it will be interesting to see him in the situation where maybe he can be himself. maybe he can connect with the voters in a way that he has his own candidacy instead of explaining donald trump.>> we look forward to seeing the post review of this. there are many places you can watch the debate tonight across the bay area holding vice president joe debate watch parties, the albany library on marin avenue in albany, the sum of food park in san francisco, the santa clara democratic party holding and then at the headquarters at the plant shopping center on monterey road, and the county gop watch party at the roundtable pizza on occidental wrote in santa rosa. we will carry the 90 minute debate right here on channel 2,
6:11 am
and we will be live streaming on ktvu mobile app and on ktvu.com. we will have a postdebate analysis on the 7:00 news on ktvu plus, and on the 10:00 news on ktvu 2. we are exactly 5 weeks away from the election day, and voters can cast the balance as soon as next week -- cast the ballots as soon as next week, and the election department will send out the balance by the end of -- ballots by the end of the week.>> it is going up for those voting by mail. >> we have the highest number we have had ever in san francisco, 57% of the registered voters in san francisco.>> the deadline to register to vote is october 24, and the political science
6:12 am
professor says that the research indicates that early voting may not increase the overall turnout, but it brings out the people that would have voted anyway. and you think you have the worst commute, we are ranking the bay area traffic trouble spots, in which commute will have you sitting in your car for a very long time. it is win or go home for the giants, not an unfamiliar position going into the game tomorrow against the new york mets.

6:15 am
welcome back, the giants getting ready for the wildcard elimination game, win or go home. >> they can do it and they have done it before. they had a chance to win the wildcard game two years ago and went on to win the world series, and we look at the recent playoff history.>> the giants are the champions in the national league. >> reporter: six years ago the giants needed to win back against the padres to clinch the national legal west, and they went on to beat the rangers for the first world championship since moving to san francisco. two years later the giants won
6:16 am
three straight elimination games in cincinnati, and three straight against the cardinals, before sweeping detroit in the world series for the second championship in three years. in 2014, the giants were the last team in the playoff, and that season ended in a thrilling seven-game world series win over the kansas city royals. aubrey hall, marcos goudreau, and these giants know it is a different game in october when it comes to the playoffs, it is just about getting in. >> it has not been smooth but we have just enough wins to sneak us into the postseason, and now where on the same pages everyone else. >> we are good team and we were confident the entire time. >> we felt confident we could do this, and we never got down on ourselves. >> reporter: just like 2014, the giants hit the road for the
6:17 am
one-game wildcard, win and they move on, loose and they are finished. this time it is in new york, and like two years ago in pittsburgh, madison bumgarner will be the guy that can take them out. >> we have been there before and we will not have it any other way. we are very confident and we do not think of ourselves as the underdog. the mets have a better record playing at home, the we don't care about that, we like that.>> reporter: that is what you expect every team in the playoffs to say, but that is how the giants have lived for the three world championships in five years, and now they want their chance to make it for mac. ktvu fox to. -- 2. the national league wild- card game is tomorrow at 5 pm and the winner will face the chicago cubs in the division series. you do not mess with the giants
6:18 am
in october. >> i like the odds, but as i tell the people lots of times, before 2010, i did not think i would see one.>> we are cautiously optimistic. >> 2010 i was good, 2012 and 2014 i was great. i am sure that a lot of people want more but i have my share. i don't want them to lose, but at least i have seen one. sometimes i did not think i would really see one. let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, the traffic is backed up for 25 minute delay, no major problems getting onto the bridge, but the traffic will be okay. i just received a message that there are no major problems on the commute, but there have been a few slowdowns.>> we are just checking in with you.>> hopefully it will stay this way, a lot of good tweets from other people saying that the
6:19 am
commute is at least a little bit better than yesterday. vasco road was a headline yesterday today more normal, 680 slow out of pleasanton out of the sinole grade, and 880 is also slow and so is the altamont pass commute. a little bit better than yesterday and we won't ask questions. let's take a look at 280 northbound, northbound 280 up highway 17 is in off to a good start -- off to a good start. the dreamforce 16 conference, a lot of people at moscone he, and that means the bart trains will be packed, and a lot of people in the city this week with fleet week, so put that on your radar. >> that is true, good advice. but your teams have delivered in your lifetime, and that is all you can ask. >> exactly, they are the
6:20 am
giants.>> had the 49's delivered or the warriors? >> they have all won championships, all the teams i follow, so i am a happy man.>> there you go. we have to get serious, hurricane matthew, category 4 making landfall on the haiti peninsula, heading in between eastern cuba and western haiti. it is heading out toward the bahamas in the next 24 hours. this is a powerhouse system, and the rainfall will be 3 feet for some if not more, a category 4 moving north at 9 miles an hour. once he clears in 24 hours the attention will be on florida, and it looks like it will be here by thursday and tropical force winds at palm beach and to the north. miami looks to be west of it, but we will keep track of this.
