clara county is taking steps to cut down the number of mosquitos after all of our recent flooding. a helicopter will be used to spray large ponds near the waste control pollution plants and the sanitary land fill. that's set to start at 8:00 this morning and the area is not open to the public so officials say there's no reason for people to take precautions. oakland residents will have a chance to meet face to face with the new oakland police chief. police chief an kirkpatrick will meet tonight with the residents of rock ridge, north hills, and mornt claire. and oakland mayor libby shaf will be introducing chief kirkpatrick. growing frustration over fixing a 67-year-old dam in the

welcome back to mornings on 2. . it's now 5:13. experts now say there is a very significant risk in the oroville dam is not fixed in time for the next rainy season. there's no time for delay in the state plan to fix that 770' dam. however, they did not say what could happen if the repairs were not made in time. both the main spillway and the emergency spillway were damaged during hefty storms. concerns about safety of the anderson dam brought more than 450 people to the forum in morgan hill last night. there's less pressure on the dam in a strong earthquake. the santa clara valley water district laided out its newest

plans. district officials say the changes would decrease the chance of flooding during storms. now that's been pushed back to 2020 because of newly discovered earthquake faults. >> you know there's still a lot of snow melt out there and the danger is still out there if the rain comes down again. >> it's better that it's found now. any new findings new complications, engineering complications related to them now than when they're in construction. >> people who live below the dam say they are trying to learn lessons from the problems from the oroville dam and they say they hope this project won't face any more set backs. time is 5:15. sal is watching our commute so far, sal, how does it look so far. it looks pretty good commute today. a much better commute on 101 northbound into morgan hill you will see that commute looks

welcome back to mornings on 2. it is 5:23. the number of starter homes in the bay area slightly up. starter homes here in the bay area are considered to cost

between $400,000 and $730,000 depending on the location. a real estate company trulia shows that only 360 starter homes went on sale in the bay area so far this year but that is still up 7% from last year. in the locateland area inventory is up by 19%. in san mateo and oakland counties it went up by 11%. when people move out of the bay area they often move to the pacific northwest. found that the bay area lost the most residents to portland, oregon over the past year. seattle, washington came at number two followed by austin, texas. the most transplants coming into the area were coming from new york, boston, and chicago.

calling all baristas, a major coffee chain has jobs it wants to fill. 240,000 people around the world by the year 2021. including 68,000 jobs here in the u.s. it's putting an emphasis on hiring 15,000 veterans. now this comes during the company's annual shareholder's meeting. this announcement starbucks is focusing on expanding around the world with the goal of adding almost 12,000 stores in the next three years. well there's a new feature on google maps that lets you share your location in real time so your family and friends can see exactly where you are. you can choose anyone on your google contacts list to share your location with. you can even say how long it will take you to get to where you're going. google thinks this is a more convenient know for you to let someone know where you are without having to send a text or call them. but some experts say the ability to see where someone is in real

in this their history. the last time is happened was in 2005 and records began in san francisco and 1849. that's 169 years of record keeping. i'm using july 1st, the rain year, not the water year which starts october 1st because i'm old school and that's the way i believe it. so if we get over 65" of rain and if you're in san francisco you say man it's been a wet year. mostly clear, there are some clouds and maybe a few little splash and dash showers down towards the santa clara valley. lots of sunshine today. this system will start to spread increasing clouds on us but not until later. walnut creek check engine and dans vim checking out. lafayette at 41. some rain down in arizona. spring training what a difference.

city. now on tuesday los angeles officially declared itself a sanctuary city. in identifying, detaining, or deporting undocumented immigrants. >> in los angeles we adopt demonize our hardworking workers. that's un-american. >> mississippi became the first state to pass the bill penalizing sanctuary cities financially. eight other states including florida, pennsylvania, texas are considering similar bills. california state university student wills have to pay more to attend college this fall. this is the first increase in tuition in six years. lieutenant governor gavin newsome who was a trustee was among those voting against the hike. it need to hire 400 new faculty members. now the current tuition at cs.u is almost $5500 a year. the increase will add about $270

we're also looking at the oakland commute here. and here at the bay bridge toll plaza there's a backup that started at about 5:31. 5:44 let's go back to steve. >> thank you. sal, appreciate that. we have a break here from our systems. the next one's already begin to go move in the picture. but it won't be here until late tonight and tomorrow morning. we're starting off with mostly clear skies. also san jose south but i think it will clear out pretty quick and that may be a few drops or so. that's also running much cooler. our system for friday looks to be on tap for about 1/2" to 3" of rain. sierra snow around 5,000 feet and above 2" to 8". today we're all right. rain returns friday. not today. no issues today through later this afternoon.

probably even into tonight. by 8:00 maybe up north of santa rosa, then overnight into tomorrow morning. that's when the greatest at some point in time for that rain will start to move through. late friday morning into early afternoon. mostly clear. can you see some of that cloud cover and a few little fast moving showers might be skipping on through. but it looks like a lot of that might calm down. this is a pretty good system here. there will be more on sunday as well. there could be some rain to the north. what we call the overrunning or the warming sector later today but for most of the bay area 40s on temps. some areas such as wood side. still palo alto. low 40s and mid 40s. 39 ukiah and some rain has made it overnight into the phoenix area. so spring training activity there is a low developing. so that will keep some activity

fremont bart station is expected to open this week. another five miles south. it has close to 2100 parking spaces. riders can check out the new station but you won't be able to take a train until saturday. time is 5:47. concerns in the oakland hills about a plan to reconfigure a busy joaquin miller road. now the city wants to reduce lanes on parts of joaquin miller road to cut down on speeding. the two lanes in each direction will be reduced to only one lane to add a shoulder. >> we are simply right sizing this road and making it safer without impact and congestion. >> now many of the neighbors were at that meeting. they were skeptical about the city's claim that this will not cause more traffic jams. demolition of the pfeiffer canyon bridge is moving along.

introducing the glc coupe. part suv. part sports car. all mercedes-benz. welcome back to mornings on 2. >> well in today's health check this morning we are talking about heart attacks because when you lose someone to sudden cardiac arrest it makes you wonder how healthy it my heart. there are many different ways to measure your heart health. one high-tech test that you may not be familiar with is called a coronary heart scan. it tests looks for calcium because plaque, which is cholesterol and fat builds up in your arteries and then eventually turns into calcium. joins us this morning more on this test and how to stay heart healthy.

what is the importance of this test? and especially if you have a family history. >> good morning. yeah, you know what and that's really a good question because there's always different scans and tests we can do and the question is who needs to do it? when am i going to learn? how do i get my heart healthy? we talk about heart disease being the number one killer. this coronary calcium scan is interesting because it's very quick and very non evasive. you barely have to unbutton your shirt. and it's also relatively inexpensive. it's about $75 out of pocket you pay for. so this tells you if you have this calcium build up in your arteries which is a hardening of the plaque. once plaque turns into calcium you can't make it go away you live with it for the rest of your life but the question is who needs to know about.

there are several risk factors. it's tempting to say that shouldn't we all get it. but we all don't need this scan. if you're at moderate risk. the general guideline, if if you smoke, if you have high blood pressure. if your cholesterol is a little out of whack. if you're overweight. they look at age. they look at gender. all those factors are determined. we know there are other ways to determine what's going on in your heart. there's a stress test where you get on the treadmill. but the bottom line is the reason doctors say you have to know your numbers because that's really the first step in all of this. knowing what your cholesterol is. knowing what your blood pressure is, knowing what your bmi is and that is included. >> and also if we do choose to get these tests are there things we can do about the results when we get this information about how much calcium we have.
