it may feel like 114 days since some on the coast saw sun but we finally saw it yesterday. it burned off earlier yesterday and retreated all the way off. most of the san mateo coast. that will happen again. there is an off shore breeze but at the surface, it is on shore. been coming down all morning. fairfield had gusts of 39. 50s and 60s. everybody is stuck here. once the fog burns off, we will see the difference in the temps. 57 santa cruz. 55, felton. low 60s around cupertino, campbell and saratoga a mile 64. thunderstorms over parts of the sierra. but mainly south. there could be isolated ones. nothing like you saw on wednesday. about where we should be on the temperatures this time of year. 60s, 70s, and 80s. a few near 90s. alex, north, east, where do you

want to start. >> we've had our issues around the bay area. we're going to give folks a look at the bay bridge toll plaza which is starting to pick up a bit moving into the 7:00 hour. we have right now probably a 10 to 15-minute backup. not backed up all the way through the maze. the good news, once you get up on to the bay bridge, the ride looks good into san francisco. down the road here, this is 880 coming past oracle arena. trying to get into downtown oakland there, are no slowdowns and traffic is looking very light in both directions there on 880. one of the big problems we have been tracking throughout the morning for you is this. up in the north bay, 680, slow traffic coming up to marsh view road in the benecia fairfield area. they are trying to clean up the mess left behind when a big rig caught fire on the freeway late last night. at last check, one of the right hand lanes was still shut down for the cleanup. you can see the backup all the

back up to interstate 80. if you can find a way around this, i would certainly use an alternate route. still a closure southbound 680 at marsh view this morning. 7:03 is the time. back over to the desk. >> thank you, alex. this morning, we are following a developing story down in the south bay where two firefighters new to the oakland fire department were shot as they left a san jose restaurant. >> one of the firefighters was killed. the other is in the hospital in stable condition. leigh martinez is at the scene now. there is an active search for the shooters and the scene of the shooting itself is very busy. >> that's right. so the information that we have is coming from oakland fire department at this time. we have not had our calls returned from the san jose police department yet. what we learned from oakland fire officials is that the two fire -- the two firefighters were off duty. they were leaving an event in the area last night. as they were leaving, they were confronted by a large group of men. and that is when both

firefighters were shot. now, talking to witnesses, they say across the street is the gordon beer brewery that had an event. it is unclear if the firefighters were there. when they came out of the event, they saw on this side of taylor street were the two firefighter victims much just after 9:30 last night, police were called out to a report of a shooting on the 300 block of taylor street. one oakland firefighter who was 30 years old was pronounced dead at regional medical center. a 26-year-old had a single gunshot wound and was in stable condition at valley medical. both men were new to the oakland fire department, just graduated in april and were four months into the training as probationary firefighters. the brewery held an event last night. it is unknown if this is the same event that the firefighters had attended. ttended. >> so when i came out, i saw two people laying on the ground in front of the store there.

and a bunch of people around the two people. >> reporter: oakland firefighters escorted the two victims to the hospital. police say the suspect ran from the scene. they have been working overnight with k-9 teams and a helicopter searching the area for the shooter. as of midnight, no one had been arrested. we received no information from san jose police at this time this morning. so the last that i heard from oakland fire department, they said they can't confirm anything that is going on with the investigation being led by san jose police. oakland fire officials are on their way here to san jose. they said that later today in oakland, they're possibly going to have something in oakland. but nothing concrete, nothing confirmed at this time. again, two firefighters new to the department. one has been killed and the other is in stable condition at valley medical center. >> very difficult loss.

moving to developments this morning regarding the terror attacks in spain. one american has been killed and another was injured in the attack. >> we do not know the eye department of the two americans but we communicated with a bay area woman vacationing in barcelona with her husband. she says her husband jared tucker is missing at this time. this shows the map of the areas that were hit. it is just down the coast from barcelona where the main attack occurred yesterday afternoon. king of spain led a moment of silence earlier today in barcelona. there will be three days of national mourning in the country. a woman was killed in the attack and 13 people were killed in the barcelona van attack. doug luzader has more on the international manhunt for those responsible. >> reporter: three major incidents in spain, all of which may be related. now, isis has claimed responsibility for the attack

in barcelona. there have been arrests. but the driver of the van in that attack is said to be on the run. police in the spanish seaside resort town responded to the latest attack. a vehicle that struck pedestrians and police. five suspects wearing fake bomb vests were reported killed in a shootout. all of this just hours after a horrific attack in barcelona. a ivanka reigning into pedestrians along the promenade, killing more than a dozen and wounding more than one hundred. >> that's when i jumped off and ran as well. i didn't look behind me. i didn't see any of the bodies or anything or the driver. but i heard it right behind me. >> reporter: police believe the two attacks were related and may be connected to an explosion on wednesday that left one person dead. from president trump a response on twitter, offering assistance and calling on spain to be tough and strong. vice president pence traveling

more officers out on patrol at popular tourist spots like pier 39. 43-year-old jared tucker lives in lafayette. he and his wife were vacationing in barcelona when they got separated yesterday amid the chaos. heidi communicated that she has rushed to the promenade in hopes of finding out what happened to her husband. friends of the couple have taken to social media trying to get the word out about tucker being missing. three charities are canceling fundraising at marling aas part of the backlash of his comments saying that both sides were to blame for the violence in charlottesville. cleveland clinic and a charity that raises money for emergency services also pulled out. a man arrested at a violent pro-trump rally in berkeley

back in march has been charged with a felony. 41-year-old child chapman of daly city was one of 10 people arrested after the rally. according to the chronicle, chapman was charged with a felony count of possessing a lead pipe. our reporters saw him before he was arrested and asked him about what he was carrying. >> are you carrying a weapon? why did you bring a knife. >> knives are legal to carry in the state of california. check your laws. >> berkeley police arrested chapman on suspicion of beating a counter protester with a pipe. he could serve a year in jail in convicted. a new lawsuit against police. in a minute, the action by the woman at the center of a sex scandal. new measures at sfo. the changes being made at the airport after a close call out on the tarmac. and overall a decent commute here on this friday morning around the bay area. but we are tracking a couple of

of missiles filed by north korea. in the test this morning, warnings were announced through loud speakers and alerts were sent to devices of local government offices. the north korean government had threatened to aim missiles near guam but tensions have eased somewhat in recent days. sfo making changes to its landing protocol in response to a near disaster last month. the pilot had lined up to land on a taxi way where planes were waiting to take off. it came within feet of several planes filled with passengers. sto says at night at least two air traffic controllers must be monitoring flights and pilots won't be able to make visual approaches. instead use the navigation system. 7:14. a check of traffic. alex is filling in for sal. you probably thought friday night light, piece of cake. >> certainly not the case. for a lot of folks, the commute has been okay.

we are tracking a couple of closures that have slowed things down for many people as they try to get out the door and get off to work this morning. first of all a live look at highway 24 headed westbound here coming through lafayette. things looking good. still moving along okay over to the tunnel. busy as you would expect. things are picking up on 280 in san jose heading up into the downtown area. you're seeing slow traffic there. we aren't tracking any significant crashes in the south bay that will really bog things down in a major way. one of the things in the far east bay, near discovery bay, we have a full closure of highway 4. and this is because of what is reported to be a deadly head-on crash that happened early this morning. right at discovery bay boulevard. so they shut down the freeway -- highway, i should say, in both directions for that investigation.

stretch. >> absolutely. good morning to you, steve. sort of a -- you know, it depends where you are this morning. the commute looking pretty decent. sort of friday light for a lot of folks around the bay area. while at the same time many people have been suffering with really slow traffic because of closures. we will start with the good news. it doesn't really necessarily look like it here. but the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza is not all that bad. only about 10 to 15 minutes. it is not even backed up to the maze as far as i can tell. so pretty decent ride getting into san francisco. i will also show you further south here the san mateo bridge, that's a nice ride as well, especially if you're trying to get west across the peninsula over -- let me start that over. especially if you're trying to go west across the san mateo bridge to the peninsula. that's a decent ride. lastly, one of the big trouble spot that's we have been keeping an eye on all morning long is this full closure of highway 4. and this is in discovery bay. so out east of brentwood here.

this could impact your ride if you try to get into or out of the bay area. they have a full closure in place as they investigate what is said to be a deadly head-on crash that happened earlier this morning. of certainly one area to avoid in the bay area. 7:32 is the time. back over to the desk. >> thank you, alex. back to the developing story in the south bay that we have been covering. two oakland firefighters very new to the department were shot last night in san jose. >> one died and one is in the hospital this morning. christien kafton is live at the valley regional medical center where the surviving firefighter is expect touchdown recover. good news there. christien. >> reporter: yeah. good news after a night of terrible news here, frank. we are here at valley regional medical center. you can see an oakland fire vehicle here at the emergency department. that vehicle arriving here early this morning. we heard that firefighters have been here overnightstanding individual i will, waiting for updates. we have heard from some of the

firefighters here earlier that the surviving firefighter is expected it recover. meanwhile an hour ago we were near the shooting scene where we watched officers from san jose police going yard to yard, apparently looking for evidence. we talked with one neighbor who tells me a man showed up in her yard overnight following the shooting that he was hiding behind a garbage can and let her dog out of the yard because the dog was barking too much. police took that man into custody at 1:00 a.m. there were dozens of officers near the intersection of jackson and 11th street blocking traffic. we watched as more than a dozen officers went into one home or into the back of that home at around 6:00 this morning. they came out later on and did not appear to have anyone in custody. did not appear to have new evidence. all of this following the overnight shooting of the two men that we now know to be oakland firefighters. the firefighters celebrating in san jose when someone opened

fire. we learned that a 30-year-old firefighter was killed. another firefighter was injured and hospitalized at this hour. we also have video shot overnight of an oakland firefighter procession. we heard that firefighters from the east bay did come down here overnight. they were standing individual i will, again, here at valley regional medical center. we also have information that oakland's top brass, possibly the fire chief, was actually here in san jose overnight. coming back to our live picture, there is a san jose fire vehicle that arrived here shortly before 7:00. apparently that vehicle contained oakland -- oakland and san jose firefighters. they were bringing coffee and bringing supplies here to the hospital for those who were here, again, standing vigil at this point. we are waiting to talk with san jose police at some point in time to get the latest information about that suspect that they apparently took into custody. we want to get more clarification as to whether

there are more outstanding suspects. also looking to find out if they were able to recover any evidence. as we were watching them in the 11th street and jackson area, it appeared that they were looking for evidence. the officers had gloves on and looking in vehicles and the backs of trucks. apparently they were looking for possibly the weapon used in the shooting. >> a difficult night. christien kafton live for us in the south bay. thank you. it is 7:35. now to new developments regarding the theiror attacks in spain. several news outlets are reporting that one american has been killed and another injured in the attack. the u.s. state department won't say whether one of the two americans is jared tucker. he and his wife heidi were vacationing in barcelona but got separated during the van attack. she says she has not heard from him since. 14 people were killed so far in the terror attacks. 13 in barcelona. another woman was killed overnight in the seaside resort.

authorities have made four arrests in connection to the attacks. they also child five assailants during the assault. all across the world, people are showing their solidarity. barcelona, israel lights at the government building went back and forth between the colors of the two flags. through face time we spoke with the opener of the barcelona restaurant in walnut creek. he was work at his restaurant in spain when a van slammed into a crowd of people at a popular promenade. he described a terrible scene of injured pedestrians scattered through the streets. >> there was screaming and people running and running and, you know, looking all over the place. and it was scary. all of the streets are closed. you can't even get on the freeway. so you have to walk -- walk all over now. over now. >> several employees at that restaurant in walnut creek are from barcelona and have family

there. they described the city as a beautiful place, one that embraces people of different races, cultures and religions. as part of the response to the terror attacks in spain, president trump tweeted a de bunk story that claims that a general with bullets coated with pig's blood. study what general of the united states did to terrorists when caught. there was no more islamic terrorism for 30 years. it supposed happened in 1902 but according to historians, the story has been discredited as a fabrication. people will gather to remember one of two troopers who died in a crash in charlottesville. the funeral will be held this morning in richmond, virginia. he was a passenger in a helicopter providing video to police last saturday. a funeral for the helicopter's pilot collins will happen tomorrow.

it is still not clear what caused their helicopter to crash. the only republican in the california legislator's jewish caucus has resigned from the group. senator jeff stone stepped down after the caucus criticized president trump's response to the rally in virginia. stone said he left because of the criticism, saying the group was supposed to be a nonpartisan one on a nonpartisan mission. it also condemned president trump for saying there were very fine people on both sides of the rally and both sides were to blame. we're learning more about a deadly officer-involved shooting in livermore this week. officers shot and killed a man wednesday night who set his mobile home on fire after a two- hour standoff and came out with a rifle. before police were called, the man was acting bizarre and challenging people to fight. police had no choice but to open fire. the man may have been upset about marriage problems. >> it is very scary to think it could have affected a lot of

people in the place. it affected my mom's house. so, you know, it's very sad that somebody had to lose their life. >> police say a crisis negotiator was brought in to try to calm the man in before the shooting. the man's name has not been released. according to a report released by the state attorney general's office, 157 people were killed in police in california last year. 42% of the civilians were hispanic. 30% white. and 20% black. six officers were killed in 2016 during violent encounters. the time is 7:39. three people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a father in hayward who was killed while pushing his 3-month-old son in a stroller. the three are facing murder charges. daniel was shot to death july 19th. according to court documents, the suspects are involved in a gang and police say the shooting was targeted. a young woman at the sex

oakland past oracle arena. it is not that bad. we have seen it worse certainly at this hour in the morning. let me give you a look at highway 24. also looking pretty good. we have seen sort of friday light conditions in many areas. westbound 24 pretty good ride over to the tunnel. we are seeing here some slow traffic. as we take you to the maps i'll show you that westbound 4 coming out of pittsburgh and bay point, you will see a major pocket of slowing right there. but it frees up once you get over to concord. 7:46. steve is here and i understand -- sources tell me there will be some sort of an eclipse on monday. >> i have heard that. there's a rumor going around. >> we're trying to verify. >> we're trying to verify that. we will get to that in a second. let's look outside. we have fog, fog, fog. there are breaks in the fog. it burned off yesterday san jose and peeled back and gave most of the coast sunshine.

who was hiding out in the neighborhood. now, we don't have any confirmation from san jose police just yet. this is coming from witnesses who live nearby. now, oakland's fire department says that two firefighters were leaving an event here in san jose when they were confronted by a group of men and both were shot. just after 9:30 last night, police were called out to the shooting on the 300 block of taylor street. the witnesses were shot outside of the taylor street market. one firefighter who was 30 years old was pronounced dead at the medical center. a second firefighter had a single gunshot wound and is in stable condition at valley medical. both men were new to the oakland fire department. just graduated in april. and they were four months into training as probationary firefighters. the brewery held a live music event last night. it is unknown if this is the event that the firefighters had attended. the headliner spoke to us this morning about the shooting. >> so when i came out, i was loading my gear in and i saw

towards guam by tensions have eased somewhat in the recent days. days. the pilot of the plane had lined up to land on a taxi way where several planes full of passengers were waiting to take off. the plane came within feet of those planes. at night now two air traffic controllers must be monitoring flights. pilots will not be able to make visual approaches instead they will have to use the plane's satellite navigation system. the time is 8:15. police say they got a call about 3:00 yesterday of a disturbance inside of a house on michigan street near gateway boulevard. when the officers arrived, they heard gunshots inside and set up a perimeter around the home. just before 8:00, the s.w.a.t. team used tear gas. a man and a woman inside of the home surrendered and were detained. no word if anybody was injured. uc berkeley police searching for a man suspected of robbing people on campus and

regional medical centers where firefighters say the surviving firefighter is expected to be okay. >> reporter: yeah. certainly good news. we've had that news one more time given to us that they are expecting that firefighter to survive following his injuries. the firefighters very happy to hear that news. we understand that there are oakland and san jose firefighters here at the hospital. we heard that the surviving firefighter, again, expected to recover from his injuries. meanwhile, about an hour ago, we were near the shooting scene where we watched officers going yard to yard, apparently looking for evidence. we talked with one neighbor who says a man showed up in her yard overnight following the shooting. he was hiding behind a garbage can and let her dog out of the yard because the dog was barking so much. police eventually came into her yard and took that man into custody about 1:00 this morning. there were dozens of officers near the intersection of jackson and 11th. they were blocking traffic in the area and focusing their

attention on various locations on that block. we watched as more than a dozen officers went into or into the back of one home around 6:00 a.m. they seemed to focus a lot of attention on the home. minutes later they came out and did not appear to have anyone in custody. now, all of this follows that overnight shooting of the two men who we know to be oakland firefighters. they were celebrating in san jose when someone opened fire. a 30-year-old firefighter was killed. the second firefighter, 26 years old, has a single gunshot wound and was last reported to be in stable condition. both men were new to the oakland fire department. they just graduated in april and four months into the probationary training. we are waiting from a report from san jose police about the suspect they detained. we are still on stand by at the hospital and we have heard that oakland fire will be holding a news conference at around 10:00 this morning to offer more

details about that. once we're wrapped up here, we will be heading up to oakland to try to get the latest from oakland fire about the incident and find out what we can about the firefighters targeted in the incident and find out more about the suspect or suspects who may still be out there. >> we are getting a briefing from officials in san jose about this incident. >> two victims were transported to a local area hospital. unfortunately one of the victims was pronounced district attorney she ised at the hospital. the other victim is listed in stable condition. as of -- as of a couple hours ago. that is a new update we got. right now, there -- we don't have any information to release on the suspect. there was an extensive canvas conducted here in this neighborhood. we did detain people. we have taken witnesses to the police department. investigators from our homicide unit responded out here to the scene to go ahead and canvas

and look for additional evidence and additional witnesses. surveillance cameras and things like that that are used during an investigation. i got off the phone with our homicide commander. they are going through a lot of the information and the details of this homicide. as soon as we have more details, we will put that out. >> do you have more than one person in custody. >> i know there were people who were detained. i think they're trying to determine if we have one suspect or two suspects. again, so once we get that information, we will put that out. >> how did you come to detain these two people? was it during that process? was it immediately after? >> it was during the process. when they originally arrived on scene, they developed some information. and they were able to go ahead and follow up on that. again, it is too early to put out any details on that. again, as soon as we get it, we will definitely put that out. >> do we know what happened

right before the shooting? >> we don't know what the motive or the circumstances surrounding the shooting are. again, that will kind of reveal it itself as we talk to witnesses and we can firm up some of the details. i do know that there was an event occurring in this area that the two victims attended. but, again, i don't know whether or not the suspect or suspects were in fact a part of that event or they just happened to be in the area. >> [inaudible question] >> i don't know anything about that. officers canvassed and detained people. but i don't know what that association is with this investigation. >> they were looking through bushes and mailboxes. were they looking for the murder weapon. >> in any investigation, that is typically what they're doing. i don't know whether or not the murder weapon is in custody right now. as you can imagine, it was dark. a lot of areas were searched. again, we're always looking for any crucial evidence that will help us in an investigation.

>> oakland fire department confirmed the victims are -- they're rookie firefighters. were they the only two or were there more firefighters that were with them that are witnesses? >> first of all, i can confirm that the two victims were oakland firefighters. obviously our heartfelt condolences go out to their friends, family and coworks of the oakland -- coworkers of the oakland fire department. the san jose police department stands behind them in this moment of grief. so, again, we don't have much information. i know that battalion chief drayton is handling questions as it relates to the two firefighters but i don't have any additional details. >> were they -- was it the event here that they were attending? >> it is my understanding that is correct. yeah. >> [inaudible question] >> it is my question that they're done cap vassing. if investigators find there are

a school. 35-year-old clifton clark owns a business that specializes in exterior maintenance. back on july the 1st, he was cleaning solar panels at the russell middle school in milpitas. he accidentally touched a 12,000 volt line that was exposed. >> i was knocked unconscious and the electrical current set my clothes on fire. and it burned about 50% of my body. >> our life is forever changed, you know. i mean, i don't know what is going to come down the road. but i know that we're a strong family and we will get through it. >> clark has been at the bush unit since the accident. he has undergone eight surgeries and there are more to come. the community has rallied around him, raising nearly $40,000 to help with medical bills. two new fire stations opening in fire prone areas

a santa cruz man killed in a tragic accident has reached a multi million dollar settlement. daniel maguire was stuck in rush hour traffic on highway 17 when a big rig's brakes failed and crushed the car. the family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver of the trucking company and accused the company of trying to cover up a lack of inspection. wednesday they reached a 9 and a half million dollars settlement. >> it is a large settlement. but it was not about the money. it was about making a statement. a loud statement to the trucking industry. >> this was a recipe for disaster. the investigating chp officer said it was the worst set of brakes he had ever seen. >> the maguire family has introduced legislation called daniel's law that would require mandatory behind the wheel training for truck drivers in california before getting their commercial license.

they hope it will prevent a similar accident from happening again. san jose police have arrested a father and son after finding nearly 1200 pounds of illegal fireworks at their home. san jose police arrested mark espinoza and his son marco espinoza. they received complaints about the use and possession of fireworks at their home in july. happening today, city leaders in san francisco are celebrating the completion of a project to make one street more environmentally friendly. the city made improvements along holloway avenue to catch storm water runoff and made the area more bicycle and pedestrian friendly. there will be a ribbon cutting certificate moany and block party at 12:30 this afternoon. commuters in the north bay will have a new option to get around starting next week. the new smart train is expected to begin service friday the 25th. the new rail service spans 43 miles from santa rosa down south to san rafael. it will run from 4:00 a.m.
