chilly and cold out there. no doubt about it. a lot of 30s towards the north and santa cruz mountain. the coldest is right before sunrise. lower bennett valley at 35 degrees. manning, 37. up to geyserville, forestville and scotts valley. graton at 36. occidental at 37. there are 30s around windsor, hillsberg and . it will be a nice fall day. temperatures 60s, 70s, and a few upper 70s to very low 80s. the trend is to warm things up over the next few days. there goes the low. we don't have a lot of moisture but it brought in cool air for this time of year. temperatures 40s and 50s. in the 30s in lake county and mendocino county. there goes our system of

circulation around that. getting a northerly breeze. high pressure is beginning its move towards us. that will warm things up over the next few days. 60s and 70s, and upper 70s and low 80s. 580. sal. >> 580 east of canyon road, steve. >> yes. >> there was a truck that caught on fire. the cab was completely burned to the ground. fortunately no injuries. however, it caused a big delay both directions. fire crews were on the scene. a lot on the scene to prevent the trailer from actually catching fire which was loaded with cardboard. there is an engine company there blocking the right lane. out towards dublin, traffic will be slow. eastbound all of the trucks coming over the hill. westbound traffic may also be affected. but it eastbound is really taking a lot of the slow traffic. i can show it to you on the map here. traffic is slow. mostly eastbound at this point. but also a little bit westbound. we have been looking at contra costa county, highway 4, very

slow. 680 is backed up from the benecia bridge. a couple problems near highway 4 getting down to walnut creek is very, very slow. westbound 80 is slow from the carquinez bridge and pockets all the way to the macarthur maze. and this morning at the bay bridge, we have at least a 20- minute delay before you make it on to the span. at 7:02, let's go back to the desk. we will continue our coverage on the las vegas shooting. part of the focus on the investigation this morning is on the girlfriend of the gunman. she returned to the u.s. last night. she is now being interviewed by federal agents. lauren blanchard is live in las vegas with an update on a mow testify for the attack. >> reporter: you're right, gasia. they are questioning marylou danley. they are calling her a person of interest but she is not under arrest, hoping to get some information. we also have new video. police body cam footage that

shows what the officers were seeing during the shooting on sunday night. that gunman had almost two dozen weapons in his possession at the time. las vegas metropolitan police have released body cam footage from the night of the mass shooting, showing officers trying to figure out where all of the bullets are coming from. bursts of gunfire heard over and over as police urged bystanders to get down. as for weapons, police say stephen paddock had a lot of them. 23 rifles were found in his hotel room, along with a device that would allow some of them to fire hundreds of rounds per minute. overall, the shooter had nearly 50 guns in the room and at two different nevada properties. another part of the investigation is focused on paddock's girlfriend. marylou danley has been out of the country but arrived at los angeles airport late tuesday night and was greeted by authorities who are now questioning her about the

massacre. paddock's brother doesn't think that anyone was involved except stephen. >> people are saying he must have had help. steve had no help. he didn't take help. >> reporter: stephen paddock who single handily changed an entire city. >> one moment is going to change the way that people live their lives. r lives. >> reporter: and president trump and the first lady are currently in the air, on their way here to las vegas. we expect them to meet with the governor, the mayor of las vegas, as well as first responders and possibly even some of the survivors. gasia. >> lauren, you don't expect the president to come to the gunman's room -- to go to the mandalay bay where you are, do you? i assume he is staying clear of the active investigation area. >> reporter: well, gasia, the white house isn't giving too many specifics on what exactly we can expect in the visit. this is very much an active crime scene. having the president in this area would complicate it for

investigators. likely the white house won't do that. we will see what happens when they get that. >> we expect the president to highlight the good work of the first responders and civilians that helped out. >> reporter: yes. that is definitely it. >> i'm sorry. go ahead, lauren, if you have a minute. >> reporter: no. i was just going to say as the president was leaving the white house, he once again said he would pay his respects and thank those that helped out during such a horrible tragedy. >> lauren blanchard, live in las vegas. thank you. the bay area continues to mourn for the victims of sunday night's shooting ram package in las vegas. allie rasmus is in san ramon now at california highway school where there are flowers for two of the school's graduates who were killed in the shooting. allie. >> reporter: yes. the flowers and balloons placed in front of the school's memorial plaque. they have a memorial plaque on the school campus where they

have the names of alumni that have passed over the years etched in the stone. on the stone this morning is a picture of denise cohen along with flowers and a couple balloons. she graduated back in 1977 from cal high. she and her companion were both attending the route 91 festival in las vegas and were both killed in the mass shooting sunday night. cohen's son told ktvu that the family is heart broken, in shock and still trying to process what happened. confirmation of cohen's death came hours after we learned of another cal high graduate who is another victim the tragedy. stacee etcheber. she also died in the shooting. she graduated from cal high in san ramon in 1985. hundreds of people last night gathered for a candle light vigil to remember her at her children's elementary school in that volunteered owe. she and her husband were at the concert when shots rang out. the husband stopped to help some of the people injured and

told his wife to run for safety. >> he went with his instinct. his instinct was to help people. and, you know, i don't want him living with that regret at all. i guarantee his wife tried to help people out too. that's who those two people were. >> reporter: one of the victims, 57-year-old denise cohen was planning to attend the 40th reunion here. the homecoming is next weekend. we hope to get more information about what if any plans are in the works to add the names of the two victims to the memorial wall here on campus. back to you guys. >> allie rasmus in san ramon. thank you. we're also learning more about a woman who graduated from san jose independence high school who was killed in the attack. yesterday family and friends spoke about 32-year-old michelle vo's life. she is remembered as a joyful person, full of life. she recently fell in love with

country music and was excited about attending the festival in las vegas. she sent a picture from the festival. this would be the last picture they would share and the last conversation that she had. there was no answer until a stranger answered her phone. >> once she got shot, she basically just fell to the ground. >> we're hoping she didn't -- she didn't feel that fear, you know, or terror or anything. like it was quick. a quick death, a peaceful death. >> michelle met cody robertson at the concert. he was standing next to him when she got shot. he tried to shield her from the gunfire as he loaded her on to a pickup truck. he delayed his flight home to provide the family some closure. classmates of janine have now raised almost $20,000 on a gofundme page to help with her medical bills. family members say she is being

treated for a collapsed lung and broken rib. she is working toward her master's degree in social work. the country music star who was performing on stage when the shooting started has canceled his upcoming concerts. jason aldean was to perform in los angeles, san diego and anaheim. the shows have been called off. he says it is the right thing to do out of respect for the victims. the tour will resume october 12th in tulsa, oklahoma. jennifer lopez is canceling her shows at planet hollywood in las vegas this week. the time is 7:09. just about an hour ago, mornings on 2 took you live to capitol hill in washington as congressional democrats held a news conference, calling for new gun control laws after the las vegas tragedy. former arizona congressman gabby gifford who was shot and severely injured back in 2011 urged lawmakers to have the courage to do what is right. >> now is the time to come

together, be responsible. democrats, republicans, everyone. we must never stop fighting. fight, fight, fight. coyote creek. the water district will remove 16 acres of dense brush along the creek. the work starts today. it will take a couple of months. the crews are targeting a particular invasive plant that destroys fish and wildlife habitats and blocks the flow of water. this invasive plant also traps wood debris and that increases the risk of flooding. the time is 7:15. any time that you have trouble on 580 in the east bay, sal, even if it is not in the commute direction, it affects the commute. >> i have good news. the fire truck is gone and hopefully things will get better. >> oh, good. >> i'll show you that on that the maps coming up. traffic on 580 westbound will be slow as normal. but it is routine. so if you drive it every day, you will be used to what you're seeing here. there have been no major issues on interstate 880 northbound passing oracle arena and drying

up to the coliseum. the san mateo bridge traffic is looking good. you notice how clear it is in the traffic shots. steve will talk about the clear weather in just a moment. this is a look at 680. i wish this was clear. 680, the weather may be clear. the traffic is not. it is backed up from the benecia bridge to the walnut creek interchange. highway 4 has been slow. this is the second straight day of really slow traffic here. it started out by some late running road work that is now gone. traffic will be easy. gasia mentioned it, eastbound 580 even in the opposite commute direction which is this way, slow because of an earlier truck that was on fire. the traffic is slow over the hill to castro valley as well. 7:16. let's bring in the man, steve paulson. >> you are spot on, my friend. it is severe clear. >> yes, sir. >> yes, sir. thank you, sal. it is pretty cold for many here. these are the coldest temps. you get that right at sunrise.

that's what we're seeing already. up at kenwood, it has dipped to almost freezing. pretty quiet. not as windy out over the bay the last couple of days. things have calmed down as the low kicked out. yesterday we had fog. that is not the case this morning. certainly kept much of the santa clara valley very cool. kenwood, 33 cold degrees. now, if you live -- my backyard says 39, 40, a lot depends on elevation or the breeze. some areas are lower than others. alexander valley at 34. santa cruz mountains saying what about us? i'm not for getting you. scotts valley in the 30s. felton in the 40s. boulder as well. santa cruz is at 44. so is santa clara. gilroy to 43. however, it will still be a nice day. sunny and nice. 60s, 70, 80s. lots of sunshine.

temps around the bay, oakland and san francisco are up a little bit. 51, 52 oakland. although i did hear about upper 40s for a few in tibberon. san francisco, speaking of, 100 on this date in 198 -- in 1987. won't be close to that today. there goes the system from yesterday. only cool air and wind. but it fired up thunderstorms and snow up in the sierra yesterday afternoon and then it died off at night. it has now moved off far to the east. still coming in from the north as the direction ushers in the cooler area. 40s and 50s. i did see a 41 at the half moon bay airport though. 53 doe beg abay. that has come up a little bit. san francisco buoy has gone down to 54. half moon bay at 56. those are below average for this time of year. many 30s in lake county. and truckee at 19 cold degrees.

monterey at 49. there is the 19 in truckee. incline at 27 degrees. south lake tahoe at 24. one low that is kicking out, give it credit, i know we didn't get any rain out of it but we got the cool air and the breeze. here is the signature high pressure nosing in. as it does, it will warm things up. that made it all the way to southern california. victorville at 39. 28 up in bishop. 52 in bakersfield. cool air for much of the state. sunshine on the way and warmer temps. 60s and 70s on the temps to a few near 80. right about where they should be this time of year. over the next few days, we will start to see the inland temps and bayside temps start to get a little above average. today looks pretty nice. enjoy it while you can. if you like warmer temps, wait a couple days, gasia. >> thank you, steve. today is national coffee with a cop day. departments across the country and bay area are participating. we're sharing video from events held last year in san francisco

the numbers will likely be affected by the hurricane. so that will come out friday morning. and taking a look at the numbers live right now, the dow jones hanging on to a bit of a gain all morning long. despite the preview of jobs looking a little bit disappointing, there's a live look. the dow jones up to 22,654. the nasdaq and s&p 500 dipping a little bit today. they have hit record territory for the last couple of weeks. we have new information about the security breach at yahoo back in 2013. it affected all three billion accounts. that triples the company's earlier estimate. it is called the biggest data breach ever. this could lead to large class action lawsuits against yahoo. verizon just bought the company in june. they took steps to protect users when the hack was discovered. but the company will be sending

e-mail notifications to the additional user that's are now affected. equifax has been awarded a government track to prevent fraud even as the company faces criticism for a massive data breach there. word comes as company officials testified yesterday at the congressional hearing about the breach that exposed the personal information of 145 million americans. the irs will pay equifax more than $7 million for the contract. the agency also says equifax is the only company capable of providing this service. apple says it has come up with a solution to fix that crackle noise that many iphone 8 users were reporting. the company has released a software update that gets rid to the sound. they heard it during phone calls and face time. it was described as a high pitch buzz that came through the ear piece. the update is free and fixes an issue with opening attachments and encrypted e-mails. it can be downloaded through

a couple of people told me that. menlo park, stanford at 42 cool degrees. but these are the coolest we will be because now that the sunrise has happened, we will start to warm up. pretty impressive area of low pressure for this time of year is moving off rapidly. and some patchy fog has formed a little bit around marin, sonoma, just off of the coast. not a lot. a lot less than we saw yesterday. there may be a few patches playing into the forecast. 40 in santa rosa. many 30s though. 40s and 50s for the temps. the thunderstorm activity has moved off from the sierra. there is a cool pattern but it will warm up as high pressure builds. 60, 70s, upper 70sand low 80s. 7:31. 580 was an issue. is it still? >> it is better now that they have cleared. the truck is on the shoulder. but westbound is what we are concerned about is moving well. i'm looking at the south bay commute as promised.

we do have northbound 280 traffic slow from about the 101 interchange all the way up to the west valley. no major issues as you drive up into the cupertino area. if i put up the map here, you will see that 85, 101 and 280 are slow. however, today it looks like kind of a normal day to say that -- that is to say that the traffic is slow. sure, it is slow. but we don't have any major issues. on the peninsula, 101 is slow in both directions in san mateo. no problems on 880 southbound between hayward and fremont. but it is going to be slow. and 680 and highway 4 continue to be one of the slowest commutes. likewise for interchange 80 westbound as you head from hercules to richmond. 880 northbound is beginning to slow near hyde street. at the bay bridge, 25-minute wait. 7:32. back to the desk. >> to our coverage of the las vegas shooting. the president is flying to las vegas. once he and the first lady arrive, they will offer comfort

to those involved in the attack. about two hours ago, the president and first lady boarded air force one on their way to nevada. as president trump left the whitous this morning, he spoke briefly with reporters. >> well, it is a very sad thing. we're going to pay our respects and to see the police who have done really a fantastic job in a short time. >> the president and first lady are scheduled to land in las vegas about 9:30 this morning our time. they will be meeting with survivors, doctors and nurses. later they will meet with civilian heros and first responders. we hope to bring part of their visit to you this morning on the 9. today investigators hope to get answers that could help them figure out a motive for the shooting ram package in las vegas. the girlfriend of the gunman returned to the united states from the philippines late last night. marylou danley was met by fbi agents when her flight landed in los angeles. he is expected to speak with

investigators today. dan leah arrived in the philippines seven days before the shooting. her sister said that the gunman, stephen paddock, sent her out of the country on short notice. her sister lives in australia. she says he she had known that he was going to do something, she would have stopped it. she asked not to be publicly notified. >> i found her a cheap ticket to the philippines. >> he sent her away so that he can plan what he is planning without interruptions. in that sense, i thank him for sparing my sister's life. but that doesn't compensate the 59 people's lives. >> no one except marilou. stephen is not here to talk anymore. maybe she can help. >> one official told that paddock transferred $100,000 to the philippines in the days

before the shooting. having tores are trying to trace that money. the time is 7:35. a texas man is back home this morning. he helped lead police to the las vegas shooter. chris bethel was two floors below paddock's hotel room. he is an iraq veteran. he heard the shooting and knew it was close. >> it seems like it never stopped. your seconds are going by, minutes are going by and the rounds are continuously going. >> bethel says he tried to call 911. the front desk of mandalay bay. and he tried to call another hotel across the street but no one answered. as he looked out at the concert he saw that the police were responding to the wrong location. bethel was eventually able to get someone on the phone and led them to mandalay bay. >> none of your training you experience could ever prepare you for something like this. the hardest part about it for

me is feeling like i couldn't do -- i couldn't get ahold of someone fast enough. >> now, police found the gunman stephen paddock in his hotel room with a self inflicted gunshot room and was later pronounced dead. we're hearing this morning from one of the survivors of the shooting. her name is natalie. she is a nurse in los angeles. she is in a hospital herself. thankful to be alive. she was shot in the stomach and in the leg. pay attention. listen to how she describes the chaos during the shooting. >> i went into complete shock. i had to keep it together. just feeling that impact. i said i think i was just shot. it felt like a huge baseball just -- just the force of it going through my stomach. and i looked down and there was blood everywhere and i knew i

was shot there. i laid there and composed myself for a minute. i said, okay, i can't stay here. i'm going to die. or i'm going to bleed out. it hurt so bad. but i knew i didn't want to die. i wasn't ready to die. so i just kept pushing forward and tried my best and tried to stay low. and i was being trampled. and it was so hard to move. everybody was stepping on everybody. and unfortunately i had to step on people just to get to where i needed to get to. and i knew once i jumped over that fence, i'm look okay i'm a little closer to the exit. and the shooting wasn't stopping. >> thanks to a cab driver, she was able to get to a hospital. and instead of the cab driver driving her to the nearest hospital, the driver took her

to the university medical center. the only level one trauma center in nevada. police departments across the country are now reevaluating their security measures following that attack in las vegas. the new york police department says it uses rooftop snipers and makes security sweeps at hotels ahead of major events such as the new year's eve ball drop in times square. but there is only so much they can do. chicago police have conducted a series of training sessions ahead of the marathon. san francisco police are increasing patrols at some of the weekend's bigger festivities including fleet week. sfo held a terror drill, practicing skills that first responders hope they will never have to use. christien kafton has more. >> reporter: yeah. this was a full-scale drill here in terminal 1 at is fo. the scenario, an active shooter and the aim to make it as

realistic as possible. this was all part of san francisco international airport disaster preparedness training including employees playing victims to the shooter. simulated gunfire and smoke all there to add realism to make it as close as possible for first responders to practice their skills. the federal government mandates that the test be performed once every three years. airport staff hearsay they drill every year on a wide variety of scenarios to prepare for lots of possibilities. drilling and coordinating the various agencies is the only way to prepare should the unthinkable happen here. this year's scenario had been planned for months. and the significance of a mass shooting drill was not lost on participants. >> we're going to use this concourse for a terrorist event involving an active shooter. this is something that we have been planning for months. given the tragedy in las vegas,

it takes on a new resonance and reinforces our commitment to emergency preparation. >> reporter: the drill ran overnight after parts of terminal 1 had been clear. there were announcements made so that if someone stumbled upon the drill would not think it was the real thing. they figured out what worked and didn't work. airport personnel say if everything went smoothly, they didn't drill properly. they are trying to figure out where the problems lie so if a real disaster strikes, hopefully they will have anticipated it. christien kafton, ktvu fox 2 news. terrorism in the las vegas shooting rampage are on the minds of police at levi's stadium where a concert will happen tonight. at least 40,000 people are expected to see coldplay tonight. security at levi's will be tighter than official. officials won't reveal the exact measures they are taking but the police chief says that fans should not change their

plans about the show. they should immediately report anything out of the ordinary at the stadium. those who live near the stadium will see if the band sticks to the 10:00 curfew. in the past, some have violated the curfew. the time is 7:41. a man is in jail in connection with a shooting on september 27th on interstate 880 in hayward. 25-year-old devon wilks was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. he was tracked down thanks to information from witnesses. he is accused of firing shots into a car that was stopped at a metering light on the industrial parkway on-ramp of northbound 880. two people were hurt. the chp is investigating to see if wilks may be involved in other freeway shootings. the time is 7:41. vigils continue be across the bay area for victims of the las vegas shooting massacre. at 8:00, we will bring you the latest on the information as

an apartment at simon street and pacific avenues. officers were responding to a domestic dispute and when they shot and killed murray. murray was armed and they released photos of his fun that was recovered at the scene. investigators say murray was in a fight with his girlfriend and had fired the gun three times before officers forced their way inside of the apartment. >> upon entering the residence, two of our officers discharged their department weapons and mr. murray was struck by gunfire. >> during the standoff with police, investigators say murray was holding his girlfriend and her two young children hostage in a bedroom. they were not hurt. >> our time is 7:45. in alameda during the past three months, there have been several laptop computer thefts at coffee shops. and the police are warning you stale on alert. at a pete's coffee shop yesterday on webster, it was one of two coffee shops hit by thieves. the second time this particular location has been targeted. there have been 11 cases as of

last night. they released this surveillance video of the thefts at two starbucks back on september 4th just minutes apart. the suspects are in their teens or early 20s. the victim of the theft yesterday told ktvu that he stopped in at pete's do do a little computer work when the teenagers came in and one approached the victim. >> a guy walked in and stole my laptop and ran away. i'm going to be more careful. i was not prepared for this. like i was kind of lost in sending that e-mail out. >> police say these cases of -- are crimes of opportunity. they're asking if you recognize any of the suspects in the surveillance video, call the police. it is 7:46. giants manager bruce will have another heart procedure. he said that he is going to undergo what is called an ablation procedure. the second time that he has had the procedure but expected to

morin vase i have than the one in april. it will take place in san diego early next week. he calls it routine. he expects to be back in san francisco for giants meetings later this month. the time is 7:47. let's help get you out the door. sal castaneda had a busy john. a lot of issues with the morning commute. we're in the thick of it now. >> yeah. we're in the thick of it. interstate 880 is slow. people heard about what was going on 680, namely that it is very slow. people come to this part of the bay using 880 or 680. they heard that 680 was slow so 70 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. that is slower than yesterday. also slow traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza itself which is not out of the ordinary. northbound 08 is beginning to slow down just near the boundary between san leandro and oakland. and we also see the san mateo bridge traffic that will be busy as you head out to the peninsula.

>> welcome back to mornings on 2. our time is 7:53. uber shaking up its board room. the san francisco based company unanimously agreed to change how the company is governed by limiting the power of the former ceo. you know i's board stripped the investors of extra voting power. back in june, kalanick was

removed as ceo after several scandals and the board voted to move ahead on a mull eye billion dollar stock sale to a japanese company that could lead to a public offering by the end of 2019. well, the oakland city council adopted a two-year ordinance to move the homeless out of encampments into temporary shelters as they wait for permanent housing. that will give mayor schaaf and the city more flexibility to build and provide public facility for the homeless. now, the first of three outdoor locations will shelter up to 40 people in tuff shed structures for six months. the new locations will have portable toilets, wash stations and security for all authorized personnel. the city is also exploring partnerships with qualified nonprofit groups, volunteer groups and other organizations to help support those sites. across the bay, tens of thousands of people are coming to san francisco for fleet

week. yesterday's events included the opening of a veterans art exhibit ask a resource fair at matt reigns memorial club. late they are week, the blue angels will be practicing and performing. san francisco police have planned for months with the navy to provide security during the fleet week event. fleet week events continue through monday. today's annual rock and roll to school day here submit e. 13,000 elementary students in san francisco are expected to walk or roll on school, likely on scooters to mark the day. the event is organized by walk san francisco. it makes sure that walking in the city is safe for everyone. mayor ed lee will be with children from cleveland elementary as they walk to school. we hope to have that on the #. in the south bay, sam liccardo is walking with students near the allen rock neighborhood. this is a day that many smashes fans have been waiting for since last april, the first game of the new season. they didn't make it past the first round of the playoffs

the lanes have been opened and the traffic has eased up. i want to mention some of the east bay commutes. one is the richmond bridge. slow traffic on 580 up to the richmond bridge toll plaza. southbound 101 traffic is slow from 37 to marin wood. we haven't seen a significant decrease in traffic. maybe a little bit on southbound 101 since the train started running there. the bay bridge approaching from the east shore freeway has been slow. more than an hour delay from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. once you get to the bay bridge, it is about a 20-minute delay at the toll plaza. passing the coliseum, traffic will be busy as you pass the coliseum and into downtown oakland. traffic is heavy heading out to the highrise. 8:01. back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. we continue our coverage on the shooting in las vegas. police are now questioning the gunman's girlfriend who returned to the united states

last night. >> lauren blanchard has more on the girlfriend and police video as they were trying to track down the gunman. lauren. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, mike and gasia. you're right, the girlfriend definitely a person of interest for police. she is not under arrest at this time. they do want to talk to her to try to figure out what might have prompted this guy to shoot all of these people. we have new police video that shows exactly what the officers were seeing during this and the gunman we know had just about two dozen weapons in his possession. las vegas metropolitan police have released body cam footage from the night of mass shooting showing officers trying to figure out where all of the bullets are coming from. bursts of gunfire heard over and over as police urge bystanders to get down. as for weapons, police say stephen paddock had a lot of them. 23 rifles found in the hotel room, along with a device that

would allow some of them to fire hundreds of rounds per minute. overall, the shooter had nearly 50 guns in the room and at two different nevada properties. another part of the investigation is focused on paddock's girlfriend. marylou danley has been out of the country but arrived at los angeles airport late tuesday night and greeted by authorities who are now questioning her about the massacre. paddock's brother doesn't think that anyone was involved except stephen. >> people are saying he must have had help. steve had no help. steve didn't take help. >> reporter: stephen paddock who single handily changed an entire city. >> one moment is going to change the way that people view las vegas. >> reporter: and president donald trump as well as the first lady are in the air, on their way here to las vegas. we're told to expect them to meet with the governor. the mayor here as well as law enforcement and possibly even some of the survivors. gasia, mike. >> lauren, thank you. two of the bay area victims

from the shooting are to be remembered at the school they both graduated from. >> allie rasmus joining us live from california high school in san ramon with this part of the story. allie. >> reporter: and it's a sad coincidence that two of the victims of this las vegas massacre happened to have graduated from the same high school. california high school in san ramon. although the women graduated about eight years apart. people have come and left flowers and balloons at a memorial stone plaque that sits on the campus. it has names of alumni that have passed away etched in the stone. on the stone is a picture of cohen along with flowers and balloons. she graduated from cal high back in 1977. she was 57 years old. she was attending the concert on sunday with a friend. both me and her friend were shot and killed in the mass shooting that occurred there on sunday. cohen is survived by her two adult sons and a brother and sister and her mother. we spoke with her mom this morning who says she is heart

broken and angry about what happened. she plans to be a strong advocate going forward for things like stricter background checks for gun purchases, more awareness of mental health issues and better security at concerts and largests. >> they really did not deserve to die this way. she needed to be recognized and remembered as a person that was a patriot and a leader in her community. she was loved by everyone. >> reporter: now, confirmation of cohen's death came hours after we learned of another cal high graduate who was one of the victims of the tragedy. 50-year-old stacee etcheber, wife a san francisco police officer and a mother of two also died in the shooting. she graduated from cal high in 1985. hundreds of people last night gathered for a candle light vigil to remember her at her children's elementary school in novato. she and her husband were at the

concert when shots rang off. her husband stop today help some of the injured and told his wife to run to safety. she was shot and killed however during that shooting rampage. cal high's homecoming is next friday. and there are plans in the works according to school administrators to have some sort of -- to honor and remember the two alumni who attended the school who died in the shooting. and that homecoming is scheduled for next friday. we hope to get an update late they are morning about what they have planned and if there are plans in the works to add their names to the memorial stone that we showed you. back to you guys. >> thank you, allie. we're learning more about another victim, michelle vo. she graduated from independence high school in san jose back in 2003. family and friends talked about how she was a joyful person, full of life. she recently fell in love with country music and was excited for the festival in las vegas. michelle sent this picture to her city kathy from the

festival. it was the last conversation they had. the family tried to reach her sunday night there. was no answer until a stranger, cody robertson answered her phone. >> once she got shot, she basically just fell to the ground. >> we're hoping that she didn't feel that fear. you know, or the terror or anything. like it was quick, a quick death, a peaceful death. >> vo met cody robertson at the concert. he was standing next to her when she was shot. he tried to shield her from the gunfire as he then loaded her into a truck with other victims. robertson delayed the flight home so he could meet her family in vegas and provide them closure. a san jose state student who was injured but survived the rampage is getting help from her classmates. almost $20,000 has been raised for her on a gofundme page to help pay her medical bills. family members say she has a collapsed lung and broken rib. she is studying for her master's degree in social work.

earlier this morning we took you live to capitol hill where democrats were holding a news conference calling for new gun control after the las vegas tragedy. gib egifford urged lawmakers to, quote, have the courage to do what is right. >> now is the time to come together, be responsible. democrats, republicans, everyone. we must never stop fighting. fight, fight, fight! >> democrats say after so many mass shootings, it is time for action. republicans disagree, saying the tragedy of las vegas should not be used to push forward gun control laws. >> i think it is particularly inappropriate to publicize an event like this. it just happened within the last day and a half. it is entirely premature to be discussing legislative

solutions, if any. >> president trump was asked about gun control yesterday. he said it would be addressed in his words as time goes by. some 40,000 people expected to attend the coldplay concert tonight at levi's stadium. coming up at 8:30, more on the security measures being taken following the shooting in vegas. the president and first lady got a look at the damage caused by hurricane maria. up next, we will have the latest on the controversy stemming from his visit to puerto rico. looking at south bay commutes, a little bit busy. this is a look at 280 at 87. we are getting word of a serious crash on highway 4 westbound in contra costa county. reportedly blocking several lanes. we will get on that coming up. all quiet in the weather department. yes, it was cold this morning. many 30s. we're looking for a pleasant fall day. good visibility and patchy fog. but that's really the only fly in the ointment.

>> puerto rico, the official death toll from hurricane maria has now risen from 16 to 34. that came shortly after president trump traveled to the u.s. territory to assess the devastation. the president spent time meeting people in san juan where he took pictures and helped hand out basic necessities that have been in short supply since the storm hit. he joked that helping puerto rico is costing a lot of money. and that remark got him a lot of criticism. >> now, i hate to tell you,

puerto rico, but you have thrown our budget a little out of whack. we have spent a lot of money on puerto rico. that's fine. we saved a lot of lives. >> mr. president, enough. stop blaming puerto rico for the storm that devastated their shores. i don't remember the president telling texas that they threw our budget out of whack. >> it's estimated that the loss from hurricane maria to puerto rico including lost output could total $95 billion. another comment that he made during during his trip to puerto rico getting attention on fox news. he said that puerto rico's debt should be wiped out. >> we're going to work something out. we have to look at their whole debt structure. you know, they owe a lot of money to your friends on wall street. we will have to wipe that out. it's going to be have to be -- you can say good-bye to that. i don't know if it is goldman sachs. whoever it is, you can wave good-bye to that. >> puerto rico declared

bankruptcy earlier this year. some bay area nurses are heading to puerto rico to provide medical aid to those in need. 20 nurses will join volunteer nurses from across the country. the mayor of san juan and other officials asked for their help. the nurses will be there for two weeks, focusing on the immediate medical needs in hospitals, nursing homes and other locations. tomorrow is the deadline for daca recipients to renew expiring applications. the program covers some 800,000 undocumented immigrants that came to the u.s. when they were children. under the program established by the obama administration, they can work or go to school without facing deportation. the trump administration announced it is ending the program but gave congress until next march to come up with a solution for daca recipients. tomorrow's deadline only applies to recipients whose applications expire next march. they will not renew those that expire after march. i know my commute in wasn't

that bad. >> oh, good. >> a couple hours ago. now let's check in with sal. how are things looking now? >> we have a serious crash now, mike and gasia, westbound highway 4 at railroad avenue. this is reported to be blocking several lanes. several cars. in fact i've been hearing police call for more ambulances to the scene. and it does sound like aver serious crash. a sheriff's deputy off duty called chp. chp is just arriving on the scene. it sounds like major injuries. again, westbound highway 4 near railroad avenue, traffic has already been slow. 680 which away from that is also slow in the area. so this commute is going to remain slow. and, again, now a pretty serious crash. 80 westbound. it will put more pressure on the entire contra costa commute. 80 is backed up from before hercules, highway 4. it is taking longer than an hour, one

hour, what would normally take 20 minutes. that's how slow we are. this is a look at the richmond bridge if you're looking to get out and on the other side of the bay. on the bay bridge, traffic looks okay on the span. 8:16. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. nice sunshine today. a beautiful fall day. upper 60s, 70s a knew near 80. yesterday was the coolest day for a while as we see cooler temperatures kick in until saturday. very cold along highway 12 there. 33 degrees. hillsberg, 34. alexander valley, 34. geyserville, 35. there were also many 30s in the santa cruz mountains including scotts valley. one observation went down to 34 degrees. quite cold. but a nice fall day. 60s, 70s and 80s. a little bit of patchy fog. not much. not enough to put in the icons of fog. but a few patches, especially off of the marin coast. a couple that are still floating around. they play plan into the weather

coming forward. the system that we had yesterday, give it credit. it stayed for one day and ejected up. it fired up the thunderstorms and the snow up in the sierra. we're on the back side of that. the northwest flow coming around t it will keep temperatures held in check. 40sand 50s. some cool readings on the coast as well. low 40s for many. now we're beginning to warm up ever so slowly. sierra popped up fast yesterday considering the system didn't have moisture with it. it made it all the way down to southern california there. is your high building in. here until at least saturday. hints of another system digging in early next week. i tend to buy into it. i tech to believe -- i tend to believe it. we will begin to rebound from yesterday's cooler readings which were slightly below average. today, near average. most locations running about where they should be for climatology this time of year. tomorrow and the next few days a little bit above average,

happened. >> reporter: the horror in las vegas is sad and troubling enough for most grown-ups. for some children, child psychiatrists say seeing it on tv, online or even just hearing about it can be traumatic. >> there will be kids who are a little more vulnerable with temperaments or who have suffered trauma that this could be bringing up a lot for them. >> reporter: the doctor is a child psychiatrist and a medical director at ucsf oakland hospital oakland. parents should look for signs that the child might have problems processing. >> for younger children, they will not think they are safe. is this going to happen again. could it happen to me. why would someone do something like this and not understand. >> reporter: she says thai that a child reactions differently emotionally to news of a mass shooting or a natural disaster such as a flood or wildfire. >> that is not necessarily under any kind of human

control. this is different. it is something that has perpetrated by another human being. >> reporter: she says parents who can keep their own emotions in check in front of children will help their young ones feel more confident. if you suspect that your children are having problems handling what they are seeing or hearing, you should ask about it. >> asking what they know and understand about it and give them a chance to ask questions. acknowledge that bad things happen. this is not something that we're going to pretend didn't happen or sweep it under the rug. but bad things happen and we're strong enough to tolerate it and face it. >> reporter: most children will likely emerge without emotional scars. if signs of trouble last for weeks, the advice is to seek professional help for your child. and coming up on the 9, we will be joined by a doctor live in the studio to discuss more the ways best to talk to your children about these tragic events. the time is 8:23.

police departments across the country are reevaluating their security measures following the attack in las vegas. police say despite all of the extra security, there is only so much they can do. chicago police have conducted a series of training sessions ahead of sunday's marathon. as we reported yesterday, san francisco police are increasing patrols at some of the bigger festivities have weekend. >> authorities at san francisco international are doing what they can to prevent an attack there. >> a full-scale terrorism drill was conducted overnight at the airport. the exercise included the coordination of various agencies, including airport staff, the san francisco fire department, police department, and various state and federal agencies. a team of more than 60 volunteers participated acting like passengers with injuries.

this is an annual exercise that had been planned for months. >> with each year, we try to pick a new scenario, a way to challenge our emergency procedures, test out our unified command, test out all of the coordination of resources that it would really take in an actual emergency. >> part of terminal 1 had to be cleared for the drill. and the airport also made announcements to make sure that anyone that kind of walked up on this exercise would not think it was actually a real event. we are following the latest coming to us from las vegas. the new body camera video that is giving a look how chaotic the scene was as officers tried to get people to safety. 40,000 people expected at levi's stadium tonight. what concert goers are being told to watch out for as they attend the coldplay show. we have messy commutes. some crashes just came in to make it worse. as we look at the bridges, westbound 22 is moderate. except for being cold this

and first responders. las vegas police have released video from officers body cameras taken the night of the mass shooting. police gathered at the mandalay bay hotel but had trouble finding where the bullets were coming from. the shooting lasted nine to 11 minutes. officered realize touchdown was coming from the window of a 32nd floor room. officers found two dozen rifles inside of paddock's suite. he had set up surveillance cameras in his room and outside in the hallway. the girlfriend of the gunman returned to the united states from the philippines late last night. marylou danley was met by fbi agents when her flight landed in los angeles. investigators hope to talk with her to gain some insight into a possible motive for the las vegas shooting. immigration officials confirmed she arrived in the philippines seven days before the shooting. the gunman sent her out of the country on short notice. the sisters live in australia and talked with a tv station on

the condition that their names would not be used and faces not shown. >> she didn't even know she was going to the philippines until steve said i found you a cheap ticket to the philippines. >> he sent her away so he could plan what he is planning without interruptions. in that sense, i thank him for sparing my sister's life. but that won't compensate the 59 people's lives. >> no one except marilou is here to talk. maybe she can help. >> u.s. officials told reporters that paddock transferred $100,000 to the philippines in the days before the shooting. investigators are now trying to trace the money. a texas man is back home after he helped lead police to the began man. chris bethel was two floors below paddock's room. he heard the gunfire and knew it was close by.

>> it seemed like it never stopped. your seconds are going by, minutes going by and the rounds are continuously going. >> bethel said he tried to call 911, the front desk at mandalay bay and another hotel across the street but no one answered. as he looked out his window to the concert, he saw that officers were responding to the wrong location. he was eventually able to get someone on the phone and led them to the mandalay bay. >> none of your training you experience could not prepare you for something like this. the hardest part about it for me is feeling like i couldn't do i couldn't get ahold of someone fast enough. >> police found paddock in his hotel with a self inflicted gunshot wound. the country music sing was person forming when the shooting started has canceled his upcoming concerts. jason aldean was to perform in los angeles, san diego and

anaheim. the shows have been called off. aldean says it is the right thing to do in respect for the victims. his concert will resume october 12th in tulsa, oklahoma. jennifer lopez is canceling her shows in las vegas this weekend. ktvu's south bay jessie gary brings us more from the san jose studio on the coldplay concert tonight. >> reporter: we have two major events in the south bay this evening. a rock concert will ring out over at levi's stadium. and the san jose sharks return to the ice to begin their 2017- 2018 season. we will begin over at levi's stadium. the rock group coldplay will be performing over at levi stadium. we talked to officials who say they have supplemented existing security plans with the

information that they received. mike seller says the estimated 40,000 people planning to attend the concert should not change or alter their plans but they should be vigilant about looking out for anything out of the ordinary. if they see something, report it immediately. first here is the chief and then the mayor. >> i can't discuss what plans we have and what we are going to change or aren't going to change. but our primarily goal is to create an environment that is safe for our entire community. >> santa clara is a safe community. and we always make sure that public safety is our number one priority at any of the events, especially at levi's stadium. so i have full faith and trust in our santa clara police department that they will fully protect all visitors to levi's stadium for coldplay. >> reporter: also in the south bay, they said the san jose sharks open their 2017-2018 season tonight at sap center against the flyers. a block party is planned before

the system. the public health director is at the 16th street station. sweeping up the station and looking for ways to keep it cleaner. one of the things they're looking at is keeping pigeons out of the station. of course there have been serious problems it there at the 16th street station including prostitution and drug dealing. but this is a way to make it more welcoming to bart passengers and perhaps less open to people who might be there to only cause problems. happening now in san francisco, mayor ed lee is preparing to walk to school, part of an effort to get children moving. christien kafton is joining us live from san francisco on more with the rock and roll to school day. good morning, christien. >> reporter: hey, mike. perfect day for a walk. take a look. all of the students out here at excelsior playground are getting ready to walk too school. the school is a quarter mile away. we were on hand this morning. we have video as students from

monroe elementary got walking this morned. the idea is to get more children and parents walking to and from school. last year 96 schools took part. that is 85% of the unified schools. that translates to thousands of students. the city says 40% of san francisco students live within walking distance of the school but only about 27% of students actually make that walk. we talked with one teacher this morning who was on hand about the benefits of walking to his students. >> i think it's such a critical and important thing to do, especially these days with kids getting them active and walking to school. you know, a lot of times in our busy lives we drive our kids to school. i know i'm no different. but just the health benefits are immense. >> reporter: yeah. the benefits don't stop there. the teacher also says it is important family time that happens during walks. he has been able to connect with parents and discuss

important issues. a lot of important issues that come up while you're walking. aside from the health benefits, students who walk we understand do better in school. that according to walk sf. they are on hand as well. if you come back to the live picture, you can see they're getting ready to do something called a walking school bus. i'm not clear what that is. we will look at that in a minute. apparently it is when you have a lot of students and parents and they walk together as a group that. is a lot safer. the mayor also set to come out here in ten minutes. he will walk with the students here from the playground up to cleveland elementary school. and jennifer here has been very, very animated. she is excited to walk to school. are you ready to get walking? >> yes! >> you have a mouth full of peanut butter. >> yes. the sprint stock. checking in on the numbers. all three indexes in the green. here is a live look at the dow, up 26 points. 22,668 there. up .12%. the s&p 500 is now posting a gain. it is at 2536. the nasdaq at 6536. it is up. anything in the green is a new record number for the indexes. we have new information about the security breach at yahoo back in 2013. we're now learning that it affected all three billion accounts. that triples the company's earlier estimates of one billion users. it is being called the largest data breach ever. all of this could lead to massive class action lawsuits against yahoo and verizon, since it purchased yahoo in june. yahoo says it took the steps needed to protect its users last year when the hack was first discovered but it will be sending e-mail notifications to those additional users who are affected. equifax has been awarded a

government company to verify tax identities and prevent fraud. word of the deal comes as the company officials testified yesterday at the congressional hearing about the breach that exposed the personal information of 145 million americans. the irs will pay equifax more than $7 million for the contract and says it is the only company capable of providing that service. and a new report shows households earning 100 to $150,000 a year plan to spend more this holiday season than last year. according to new research, the latest survey, they are expected to increase holiday spending by 15%. that averages to about $1,600 per person. overall, holiday sales are expected to increase 4% in november and december, which is a $27 billion increase over last year. one reason, there's one more shopping day between

to evacuate. very seriously injured child and take that child to children's hospital oakland. and right now, the freeway there is -- you're being advised to stay away from highway 4 at railroad. 680 is a mess. we've had a lot of crashes along the stretch that have been non-injury crash. nonetheless, a lot of slow traffic going from concord to walnut creek and danville. looking at the east shore freeway, it has been slow for an hour from richmond to the berkeley area. actually from hercules to richmond and the berkeley area. if you're going that way, it's a big delay. this is 52 minutes official time according to the road centers from the carquinez bridge to the maze. 8:47. let's bring in steve with the weather. >> thank you, sal. a few patches of fog mainly off the coast. they were late to form but they formed. i think with the water temps being colder and warmer inland temps, that may play into the

>> one man is behind bars in connection with a shooting on interstate 880 in hayward. the highway patrol arrested 25- year-old wilks on suspension of attested murder. vectors say they tracked him down based on information they got from witnesses. wilks is accused of firing into a car stopped at the metering lighting on september 27th. two people were hurt in that

incident. the chp is now investigating to see if he might be involved in other freeway shootings. the san francisco police department has released body cam footage of a deadly officer- involved shooting. it happened september 24th on simon and pacific avenue. officers were responding to a domestic dispute when they shot and killed murray. he was armed and they released photos of the gun that they recovered at the scene. investigators say that murray was in a fight with his girlfriend and had fired the gun three times before officers finally forced their way inside the apartment. >> upon entering the residence, two of our officers dish charged their department weapons and mr. murray was struck by gunfire. >> during the standoff with police, murray was holding his girlfriend and two young children hostage in the bedroom. they were not hurt. before the next rainy season, san jose leaders are taking steps to prevent

flooding along coyote creek. 14,000 were force today evacuate their homes. it did more than a million dollars in damage. them prepare for the wet winter by removing 16 acres of dense brush along the creek. work begins today and it could take a couple of months. crews are targeting invasive plant species that obstructs the flow of water. this also traps wood debris that increases the risk of flooding. giants manager bruce is about to undergo a heart procedure. yesterday he said that he will undergo what is called an ablation procedure. it is the second time that he has had the procedure. but it is expected to more evasive this time. it will be done in san diego earlier next week. he calls the procedure routine. he expects to return to the san francisco giants for meetings later this month. what you need to look out for especially if you bring your laptop to coffee shops.
