and then it does look cooler saturday. and there's -- if there's the hint of and on storm disturbance, it rants that up big time. it's moved off out of southern california and heading more towards the planes. there's some snow up in the rockies. 40s, 50s on our times. most locations are already cloudy. the sky conditions at least. 51 in the city. there's a lot of 51s there. also berkeley lab. and also el cerrito and richmond. you combine that with that west wind and low cloud deck. that will cut right through you. i think we know the pattern. saturday looks pretty good until saturday night. there will be a system coming by which will move right in on sunday. so temperatures not really going for. 50s, 60s to 70s. 5:01. busy day yesterday. is today off to a better start? >> it is. we don't have a lot of slow, inexpensive -- unexpected traffic. and that's where we are starting

, just before the altamont pass on 205 and 580. you can see the slow traffic. once you make it to the track -- past, it's a slow track across. but it is going to be okay on the livermore side and over to dublin. looking at the commute on interstate 80 and oakland. you can see traffic is moving well near haven road. you can see that traffic at the eight -- bay bridge is getting more crowded in the cash lanes. let's go back to the desk. after a long meeting, it will -- went on for hours. it went late into the night. the fremont school board took a vote on the issue of sex education. >> the controversy over the curriculum and whether or not it's appropriate for certain ages. allie rasmus is live to explain what the board decided. >> reporter: the school board voted against adopting the proposed sex ed curriculum for fourth through sixth graders at

all of its public elementary schools. this is after many parents objected that the material in that curriculum was too graphic and not age-appropriate. now, the vote happened well after 1:00 this morning. after more than six hours of public comment. more than 500 packed the meeting. yesterday at the district office. many of them holding signs that said, yes to sex ed, no to 3rs. that's the name of the sex ed program that the district was proposing to adopt. a lot of parents we spoke with yesterday said that they like the idea of sex education, just not that particular. one. the majority of parents spoke out against it things -- saying the videos and images were too graphic. >> if the kids are not allowed to see what they already think why did okay for teachers to read out this kind of thing? >> it needs to be medically accurate. it needs to be unbiased. and needs to talk about the elements that are in the

california healthy youth act. it does that. >> reporter: that was the fremont school superintendent talk about a new state law passed in 2016 that requires new sex ed curriculum at public schools, including topics on sexuality and gender identity. district officials say that 3rs program did that, which is part of the reason why they collected and. there are some parents who select -- support that curriculum and say that some of those lessons are on -- would have been very valuable to the elementary students who would have received a. state law does not require fourth through six graders to have sex education. now that it's rejected this curriculum, it's unclear whether those elementary students will have any sex ed at all. we are working to get more information about that. we told you it was a very late night for them. so it may take us a little while to get their calls.

>> thank you for that update. time is now 5:04. this morning, we are following a major elevation from president trump's new lawyer, rudy giuliani, who says the president reimbursed mogul cohen for the one $3000 paid to adult movie star stormy daniels. and this morning, president donald trump is tweeting about this, saying, mr. cohen received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign. >> that money was not campaign money. sorry, i'm giving you a fact now that you don't know. it's not campaign money. no campaign finance violation. >> so they funneled it through a law firm? >> and the president repaid it. >> that admission is surprising because the president has said more than once he didn't even know about the payment to

stormy daniels. daniels claims she had an affair with the president back in 2006 and that she was paid to keep quiet about the alleged affair during the 2016 election. the white house has denied the affair ever happened. the attorney for acute zero killer and rapist joseph deangelo will be back in the courtroom today to appeal to the judge. deangelo's lawyer is tried to brock -- block prosecutors from collecting more of his dna. fire -- filing a motion to try to stop the dea from taking photos of deangelo's body and from collecting his fingerprints and dna. arguing that a warrant as already been approved. investigators believe deangelo is the golden state killer and responsible for 12 murders and 50 rapes in the 1970s and '80s. dna may also help investigators with another infamous case, the zodiac killer. investigators gave a dna lab two envelopes sent by the

zodiac killer. authorities hope to obtain a full danny profile from saliva on the envelope and stamps and then track him down doing the same type of tracing used in the golden state killer case. the zodiac killer murdered five people in salina and napa county's between the mid-major say the -- december 1968 and october 1969. he claimed responsibility for more mergers in lead -- murders and letters. reports san francisco police chief bill scott maybe applying for the job of police chief in los angeles. according to the l.a. times, she's got is interviewing for that job. the current l.a. police chief charlie beck, will retire next month. the bill -- bill scott was a deputy police chief before he took over the san francisco police department last year. he addressed the issue with mike mibach during interviews with other bay area poli chiefs.

>> you know the chief, charlie be? he announced a retirement. applications have been sent giving interest of going back to los angeles. >> i'm focused on here. >> see if he applied? >> i'm focused -- focused on here. out of my role is to -- run the police department and do it to the best of my abilities. that needs to to be my focus. >> welcome police chief enter patrick and eddie garcia were also a part of that roundtable discussion. less than, the fs pd released a statement repeating what she scott told us. he is focused on his job in san francisco. first that has been reported in california from the e. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce. the cdc said it's made 121 people sick. cases are spread across 25 states. dozens of people have been hospitalized including some with kidney failure.

jana katsuyama spoke with a food safety expert to make sure that any romaine you buy is not from yuma, arizona. >> fresh fruits and vegetables bring crowds of consumers to bay area farmers markets. many farmers were getting questions about where their romaine lettuce was grown. >> i say all that lettuce is safe. it's from here, from local. >> reporter: local california romaine supplies are deemed safe. in nationwide outbreak of e. coli bacteria illnesses have been traced to contaminated lettuce from yuma, arizona. which supplies most of the nation's romaine lettuce during the winter. the cdc reported the first death wednesday in california. restaurants such as paradiso have been checking their produce supplies. >> all of our romaine is from

california. i've only had a few inquiries about where our lettuce is from. >> reporter: one reason for the widespread contamination is that consumers are eating fresh produce year-round. >> it's very frequently pre-cut, bagged, mixed, and that can increase the likelihood that such a contamination invent did happen. >> reporter: bacteria has evolved to be resilient. >> they can survive on surfaces, on machinery, in soils, in water. on human hands or clothing or feet or things like that. >> i tried to take as many preventative measures as i can at home like washing everything thoroughly. >> reporter: bauer says in general even washing produce may not eliminate all bacteria. >> some of them might have invaded the actual tissue of the plant, some of them might be caught in little creases, some of them formed little protectors -- protective environments for themselves,

and those are very difficult to wash off. >> reporter: jana katsuyama, ktvu fox 2 news. oysters from canada are being blamed for making a number of people sick. according to the state department of health, 100 california's -- california scott the normal virus. the affected oysters near vancouver island, british columbia. normal virus is contagious. there's a health warning in santa clara county. it's about the measles. according to the san francisco chronicle, at least six cases of the measles have been reported in that county. health officials say the latest case involved a patient who recently traveled outside of the u.s. the first case reported march 7. four more cases where conformed by april 5. the measles have also been

welcome back to mornings on 2. it's 5:15. a barn in connecticut where a man reportedly held his wife hostage for several days exploded, sparking a fire and injuring eight police officers. investigators say the wife managed to escape and told him that her husband had held her in a threatening manner for three days. when officers arrived at the home, the man refused to come out and then the bomb exploded. the wife was severely beaten, notified police. >> around 2 pm or so, a female victim did enter the police department with a complaint of a domestic disturbance here on quinnipiac ave. >> reporter: authorities did not make contact with the barricaded man. they are still searching for him and are not sure if he was

in the barn when it exploded. the san jose sharks won. they shut out the las vegas knights 4-0. the semi final is tied up. >> marcus stories and start the cycle again. there he comes. he scores! >> yes, marcus sorensen of the sharks scored four minutes apart from the first period. the fast start that head coach peter deboer wanted. so the series is tied at 2. it's only the third time all season the sharks have beaten the golden nights. they will play again tomorrow night in las vegas. the eighth beat the cnl -- seattle mariners 3-2. james paxton strike out 16 batters last night. no other seattle pitcher as than that since livermore laid -- native randy johnson struck out 19 back in 1997.

they had up to the valley. right now is a good time to do it. you don't have a lot going on when it comes to slow traffic. getting up to highway 17. it looks pretty good. heading out to the bay bridge. by the way, we don't have a big back up this morning. on 80 as you drive through the area. on carquinez bridge to richmond like yesterday. just in case you're wondering, it's a more morning -- normal commute. >> the rearview mirror is great but the lane assist on your mirrors, that has saved me a couple of times. that is -- when it goes red, be careful. those are great. we do have a big fog bank in place. folks, i've been doing this a long time. once the fog wears out, it's tough to warm-up unless you get a northeast breeze or really strong high pressure, and that's not happening. 50s on the temps. everybody. everyone is close. a couple degrees there. that's because every station says cloudy. except sfo, which says mostly cloudy. but i mean, travis, gusts of

31. it's picking up and feels big- time. it does look pretty quiet today. 56 by the water. 70s inland. but we are not warming up today. it will be warmer friday. some of that will carry into saturday. but then a weak system punches through and it looks cooler going into sunday. for those of you who work outside, it looks unseasonably cool. we will see. may is not looking very warm, at least not right here. but we have a low cloud deck that's in place. when the low clouds make it well and lent and conquered to livermore, cloudy at 5. that tells you everything you need to know. it will be nice. some of that low cloud deck will burn back the load that was responsible for some of the rain in southern california. so a flight from here to over the planes or anywhere back east, you'll probably get a little turbulence there coming in from some of these thunderstorms all the way up to chicago. rate lakes. that's in the line of severe weather there. and again, they are partly

stuck. vallejo 51. even nevada is in their. so that -- submit -- that's pretty cool. bodega bay is 50. i think 50. there were 49 and 50. each of these has come up about 1 degree. they are still very cold. i got to tell you, folks, the entire west coast, at least california it's mainly 50s on the water temps. all the way down to santa monica. you're going from upper 40s, low 50s on the oregon border down to santa barbara, santa barbara, -- santa monica. still, that's a very cold water. west wind, san carlos, west, southwest at oakland. you see the delta breeze is even stronger. 59 palm springs. phoenix at 58 with flagstaff 27. 56 las vegas from that system yesterday which brought mid-70s to the high. we will have low

decide on a tax to increase teacher salaries by 7% for two decades. it will also pay for classroom and school technology at 10 underserved schools. the property -- proposition g's on the june valid -- ballot is expected to generate $50 million a year through a partial tax. that parcel tax would increase the cost of housing and owning properties in san francisco. california just keeps getting bigger. there are now almost 40 million people living in the state. new numbers from the state department of finance says 39.8 million people live in california. since last year's survey, there are 309,000 new residents. that includes newborns and people who moved to california from other states or other countries. san francisco and san jose are among the top five big cities in california with the largest

population increase. san francisco added almost 10,000 new residents. san jose added 8500. that very same report found that sacramento's population is now more than a half-million for the first time. sacramento grew by more than 7000 people last year. they had the highest percentage gain of any big city in the state. however, some residents say the population boom is also causing traffic and housing problems. >> we're not building as fast as we would like to to meet the internal demand. i think it's just planning for that future that we all know is coming. how do we work together? >> affordable housing is one reason many people move to sacramento. but a recent real estate report found the sacramento area is seeing the third fastest rent increases in the country. on our website, ktvu.com, we've posted more details about california's booming population. you'll find that report under

have the median light clicked on? >> yes, they have. the good news is yesterday we had a slow commute on interstate 80 that today we have a little bit of a break a lot more like normal. vacaville, fairfield, and vallejo. nothing like it was yesterday as we push in. you can see a little bit of slowing on 37. yesterday, the whole region was affected by late running roadwork and a couple of motorcycle accidents. three to be exact that we know of anyway. traffic has been much better today heading out to the macarthur maze. it's taking 20 minutes. yesterday at this time, it would have taken about an hour. a lot of people were upset about it. today is much better. at the bay bridge toll plaza, the median light have gone on. the traffic is backed up out to the maze, about 10-15 minute delay. 5:33. let's go back to the desk. it was a frightening morning in one marin county neighborhood after a fire

forced many people out of their homes. >> it started about midnight in sending way. the flames woke up the people inside. they did get out safely. firefighters evacuated several nearby homes. the fire crews are still out there watching for possible flareups. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this morning, we are following a major elevation from president trump's new lawyer, rudy giuliani, who said the president reimbursed his personal attorney, michael cohen, for the $130,000 paid to adult movie star stormy daniels days before the 2016 presidential election. and this morning, president donald trump is tweeting about all of this. he said, mr. cohen received a monthly retainer, not from the campaign and having nothing to do with the campaign. doug luzader as me onthe changing approached from the president's legal team. >> this really is a surprising turn. it comes as the trump legal

raised questions about whether it was an undisclosed campaign expense which could be illegal. giuliani says no. >> the fact is, just trust me, they are going to come up with no violations there. >> reporter: rudy giuliani is also negotiation with rubber molly -- negotiating with robert mueller. in washington, doug luzader, fox news. members of that texas church that was the scene of a deadly mass shooting last year will be joining president donald trump at the white house today for the national day of prayer. the pastor of the church and his wife who lost their 14-year- old daughter in that shooting will lead a prayer at the event. 26 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in that church outside of san antonio back in november. there was another robbery at a berkeley cafe where students spent time working on their laptops. the latest case had an unusual

twist. a man in a gray hoodie tried to escape after grabbing a laptop. this video shows two good samaritans trying to stop the thief. moments later, a second suspect showed up and told them to let him go. when they didn't, the second suspect punched one of the two people. berkeley police say they're looking for both suspects and a good samaritan. while we appreciate their courage, at the same time, we caution people against doing that. we've had instances where people have fought to keep their laptops and they've been hurt badly. >> the two suspects ran back to their car and drove off. police say they after license plate number but they have not made any arrest. the laptop was recovered after the thief dropped it before getting into the car. our time is now 5:30 seven. late last night, the richmond citizen police review commission ruled that excessive force was used in a fatal 2014 officer- involved shooting. 24-year-old richard pd perez

was shot outside of a liquor store by an officer who tussled with the an armed man. the citizens please review commission has said that there was a complaint from the perez family who said many witnesses were ignored in the police version of what happened. >> because then you're going to want to get out to talk about it and you're going to want people to listen to you. >> we have six witnesses saying, no, he didn't. we have six witnesses say he was saying, don't shoot me. >> witnesses say the officer tackled perez from behind and that perez was drunk, not violent. the perez family is hoping policy changes may come now and that the county grand jury and the district attorney will examine the case. 5:30 eight. two seneca county correctional

deputies have been felt not guilty on assault on an inmate. they were acquitted yesterday after 40 hours of jury deliberations in the five week trial. they were accused of beating reuben garcia in san jose. garcia says the deputy's repeatedly punched and kicked the man and slammed him against a wall while he was jekyll. according to the mercury news garcia's lawyers say it was enough evidence to convict the guards but things the jury was list empathetic towards garcia because of his criminal record. that included armed robbery and child molestation. we're now learning that southwest airlines jet that had to divert to cleveland because of a cracked window was infected recently. -- inspected recently. it was diverted when passengers heard a loud pop and saw a window cracked. they say the crew reacted quickly. >> we heard a crack.

but everybody just started moving away from it. >> we saw people starting to freak out. we turned around and all of the flight attendants and stuff were running down the aisle to check it out. >> i was like you couldn't get that seatbelt off of me for anything. >> this comes two weeks after the deadly southwest incident where a woman was killed. ktvu's jesse gary spoke to an aviation expert about the windows on the commercial jet. >> the windowpanes on selfless airplanes and other commercial aircraft are made of plexiglass . two pieces forming an insulated barrier. san jose state university aviation department chair dr. fred perez says wall cracks inside windows are rare, flight stress can overtime we can the material.

>> where were the shots fired? >> this is only partial video. it shows the officers bursting into the hotel room at the mandalay bay hotel. assault style weapons scattered around the room. the broken window where paddock fired the shots can also be seen as the police search that room. >> indicating two guys. >> i see a guy switching guns, not reloading. did he write something on that? >> the video does not show you what the first officer who went inside saw because his body camera was not on. vegas police tried to block the release of this video. they were locked in a long legal battle with several news organizations before they released it. police in hayward are asking for help to find a missing guide dog. the black lab is named wilson. -- wilton. wilton was last seen near redwood road and proctor elementary school. anyone with information on his
