and i'm greg lee and for frank somerville uptick in the number of coronavirus cases is beginning to take a toll on events expecting big crowds from dance performances in the bay area to sporting events across the country. the pandemic is forcing a new round of postponements or cancelations. those cancelations have started just as holiday travel ramps back up. and tonight we're finding out masks on planes may become the norm for a very long time. also tonight, president biden is preparing to make a speech this week that the white house says will come with new steps to try to limit the spread of covid-19. we begin tonight with ktvu is elissa harrington and look at how covid cases are beginning to force changes. too many upcoming events. alyssa you know it's starting to feel like deja vu. but one medical expert i talked to said we have actually come along way since that first shut down back in march of 2020. he said that because of the high vaccination rate here in the bay area, he also expects that most breakthrough infections won't lead to severe symptoms. video

travel for the holidays. they're getting hit with the possibility they may never be able to get back on a plane during the pandemic without wearing a mask, the president's chief medical advisor said today. he does not believe the pandemic will reach a state in which people can go without masks in close spaces, even with good filtration. i think when you're dealing with a closed space, even though the filtration is good that you want to go that extra step when you have people, you know, you get a flight from washington to san francisco. it's a well over a five hour flight. even though you have a good filtration system. i still believe that masks or prudent thing to do and we should be doing it. southwest airlines ceo contradicted doctor anthony fauci gary kelly told the us senate panel last week that he doesn't think masks at much protection on planes. kelly tested positive for covid 19 days after the hearing. and in a letter to staff announcing that positive test told them he supports the federal mandate.

coronavirus updates to stay on top of the pandemic developments just go directly to ktvu .com/ covid. sanders a police say a 17 year old was hospitalized today after being stabbed. it happened on the 4900 block of almaden expressway. authorities say the teenagers, injuries or life threatening no word yet on any arrests or a motive. the san francisco police department has solved a 43 year old murder case . police have arrested and booked mark stanley person net for the murder of marissa ralph harvey, who was 15 years old when she was killed on a visit to san francisco in march of 1978. her body was found not far from golden gate park in sutro heights park, but her killer was never found. the case was reopened last year and thanks to advances in forensic science investigators were able to locate and arrest person ed. the suspect was arrested in denver, colorado last thursday with the help of multiple agencies, including the fbi. san jose

police are investigating an attempted robbery at oakridge mall, police say a group of about 15 people went into the macy's store about six o'clock last night. try to run off with merchandise. the group was confronted by store security when one of the female security guards tried to detain one of the suspects. police say part of the group knocked her to the ground, kicking her in the head and pulling her hair. 43 year old up here, hamad, who police do not believe to have been part of that group was arrested after police say she tried to prevent police from catching the suspects. ahmed was booked on suspicion of felony assault and assault on an officer. the suspects got away more than $1000 worth of merchandise was recovered. the thing that is going to #### in #### basket. coming up. how an affiliation between two bay area hospitals has created a battle over resources services and staff. and a cannabis collapse. the warning from the state's legal marijuana industry to lawmakers

get in front of this tax issue, it's going to it's going to roll right over us. goldman's husband, michael cohen, sits on the leadership of the brownie, mary democrats of california, a group that advocates for medical cannabis patients worried that the illegal market could stifle the growth of california's burgeoning cannabis industry. we need to be careful. because because it is so new situation that currently allows illegal suppliers to offer cannabis products that are reported to be on average 50% cheaper than those of their regulated counterparts and potentially dangerous the medicine isn't tested. and from my experience when we tested it was cannabis. it's often found to be high and pesticides, lowering the taxes to put it down in the illicit market, i think is an excellent way in the long run to raise state tax revenues from cannabis . a spokesperson for the governor's office, responding in a statement saying. the governor acknowledges the need to curb illegal sales and supports tax reform, adding, in part quote.

captured images of this gorgeous glow over the bay. while it was dry cold today, you need to get ready for a change this week. ktvu chief meteorologist, bill martin joins us now with the forecast high bill. hey greg, you know that is what you're saying out there. those clouds that's a changing atmosphere reigns on the way you can feel it out there temperatures today we're on the cool side. it was just foggy and cool and. you know, some places got some, like oakland had some sun today. but and like parts of marin county, you didn't see the sun all day and high temperatures just in the upper forties. also inland right up by vacaville and fairfield temperatures. just in the upper forties. low fifties high in antioxidant was 48 degrees highs tomorrow are going to be warmer by a couple of degrees. we're going to see that fog kind of get lifted out. as that weather system that sunset we showed you. that's a weather system coming on shore or getting close to and it's going to release the inversion, which makes the fog go away. that's why we're going to be a little warmer. but once it releases the inversion about 12 hours later, we're going to get a weather system in here that shows up pretty much monday night into

forever changed her daughter diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, a blood disease requiring regular attention, medication and causing it times immense pain without warning. it's like an aching feeling. are stabbing feeling. my witness stamps has visited children's hospital, oakland her entire life nationally recognized as one of the best for sickle cell patients. but in recent years, mother low wanna noticed changes in care? i have this thing that it's going to #### in a #### basket. in an emergency. she says the hospital used to have a bed ready for her daughter. they just call as they rushed in for help, but now they wait in the er for an hour, and it's not just patients who think priorities have changed. not about patient care, but it's about money and power. this high ranking doctor who wants to remain anonymous, fearing job security claims in oakland programs have been cut staff is leaving, and patients are put in

a tough spot. talk about equity . but what you see on the ground is the exact opposite that you see patients with less resources after underrepresented minorities. been treated worse. he and another prominent doctor estimated about three dozen physicians have left in frustration. the doctor who spoke to us even filed three whistleblower complaints with the state. claiming the hospital went from six pulmonologist down to two and he says the mission bay campus treats 40 pediatric sickle cell patients, but oakland treats 800 kids and adults. others inside the hospital save vital services have been stripped down or moved across the bay. for some, it means that they have to go over to ucsf for care that they used to get at children because i care has been transferred. and that's really difficult if you're a kid. uh from a poor community in the central valley for your even east oakland. this nurse has spent four decades of

children's who says the burden of time transportation and parking falls on the poor in communities of color. despite the high need in oakland, records compiled by healthcare workers show treatments moving to san francisco, for instance, surgeries in oakland dropped by 24% since the affiliation while san francisco's increased by 5% they deny it, but it looks like systemic racism to us because the differences between the two hospitals. is huge. ucsf did not grant us an interview but says it has saved the oakland hospital from financial collapse is modernizing. what are outdated facilities and rebuilding care programs. now that's not to say there are not speed bumps that have occurred. president matthew cook defended the affiliation at an oakland virtual town hall last year along with the ceo. we've made significant progress in bringing fiscal stability to the hospital

where strengthening the programs you csf says it has contributed $181 million for underinsured pediatric patients, added a new intensive care unit in september was awarded as $17 million grant to study sickle cell disease. and wants to invest a billion dollars over the next 10 years to expand the oakland campus. we are committed to this community. and to make sure that the patient's families. get what they need, regardless of their ability to pay. but the doctor who spoke to us says it's not the first time you csf has heard these complaints hopeless. you feel the same way focusing instead. you don't have any power to make change. just weeks ago, another town hall had healthcare workers. community members in lawmakers concerned about accessibility and accountability. ucsf has a responsibility. to be accountable to the east bay community. it is not what we.

expected of this merger and quite frankly, it makes me. it makes me mad. you csf denies the allegations, calling them inaccurate, misleading or false . but for families like the stamps, it has been a never ending struggle. i don't know it's going nowhere. i'm scared when you have a check. sick child. it's hard. it's hard. it's very hard in the comfort in knowing that you have these doctors and nurses that's along the side of you, regardless of what's going on. it matters a lot. and when you don't have that type of support, it's difficult. it's very, very difficult. and i just want them to be back to how they were. brooks jarocz ktvu fox two news. ucsf says its role in oakland was to stabilize the hospital's finances. it started a website called setting the record straight. ucsf also says it hopes to start construction in

figures show the state's job market and economy is slowly rebounding. but some experts say there could be a new road block the omicron variant as ktvu. tom baker tells us, there's concern a potential covid surge will derail some of that progress. despite a gain of 45,000 new jobs in november, reducing california's unemployment down to 6.9% from 7.3. it is still the highest. in the nation. national unemployment is well below that at 4.2% with several states now under 3% what worries labor lawyer mike bernick of the duane morris law firm and a former ed director. is the macron covid variant. well that's really the big issue for this week and going forward. um is what impact i'm a crown is going to have in terms of employment in our state. but macron has already slowed things down as many companies such as apple, google and lift just to name a few. are telling many

experts are warning of a scam that can steal your money and personal information. that scam comes from a phishing email claiming to be from immigration , visa and travel asking you to renew your pre check membership. the email asked for your name, place of birth and passport number, which can be used for identity theft. the site tells you to pay the usual $85 fee at the interview, but when you look carefully at also asked for a $140 140 dollars through paypal , which experts say is a giveaway that that site is not real. if you're making an actual payment for some other government service, you're always going to have multiple other types of payment methods like credit and debit cards. the other sign that the email isn't real is that it comes from a dot com address. anything that comes from the government will come from a dot gov address. there are growing fears tonight about a new hacking system that could threaten any computer in the world, including yours as fox news is jennifer griffin reports . one security expert warns of a cyber pearl harbor. departments
