we e oakland zoo and specifically on a young mountain lion named rose , who has been there for the last week. rose was first spotted by hikers a couple of weeks ago, and when wildlife officials found her she was £8.8 . there she is in this picture and just to give you an idea of what that means. based on her estimated age, she should have been about £30. she was
8:13 am
extremely dehydrated in very bad shape. but when she survived that first night at the zoo, the vice the vp of veterinary services, dr alex herman said they could tell she had an obvious will to live. and let's welcome dr herman with us now live to the show. good morning to you. how is rose doing? she's okay. she's definitely a fighter . um we've had a little setback this week. um we removed her catheter because she was just eating so well and if you can imagine she's a wild animal, you know, having an elizabethan collar on and a catheter in and being an icu is very stressful for her so when he tried her one day off of catheter, and she quickly became quite dehydrated , so yesterday we did. we did a procedure on her and did x rays and recheck your blood work. um you know, we always worry about these guys. when they're so debilitated, can they suddenly get pneumonia go into kidney failure, um, their intestines
8:14 am
that working that kind of thing , and luckily, she was just dehydrated. she just didn't have the strength in her body yet to come off of intensive icu support by last night was feeling much better drinking. a lot of water ate a lot getting a lot of feistiness back, so right now we're guardedly optimistic, but that's good. that's good and guardedly optimistic. we like to think that it's all going to work out. but really, she has been through a lot. i mentioned a little bit about her weight and her extreme dehydration. what do we think? happened to her in terms of how she ended up where those hikers first saw her and then and how wildlife officials were able to track her down. yeah well, we usually she is our 18th orphan mountain lion rescue in the last four years. it's a service that we provide for the state of california, california official wildlife service and oakland zoo. um and we think in general, it's because their mother was hit by a car and died. mountain lions
8:15 am
get hit by cars a lot. you know, we have a big need in the state of california for wildlife under overpasses for freeways so they can move around corridors without getting hit by cars. so we think she was probably lost her mom and was starving for several weeks. she was literally was skin and belts. poor thing. and so you know, in terms of losing your mom to you learn, you lose the person that the animal is going to teach you how to hunt out the find your water, do all the things and care for you. so in terms of how long until she's literally out of the woods and then is her future there at the zoo. so they generally stay with their mother to their year and a half or two years old and really co hunt, so she's not able to feed herself right now. and then, now that she's been removed from the wild um, doesn't have a mother to mentor her. you know if and when we save your life, and i'm always optimistic we do save most of these guys through intensive things like transfusions. icu care that kind of thing. um she'll need to live
8:16 am
in a controlled habitat. so um, add easy accredited zoos most likely big, naturalistic habitat with other mountain lions. they are social so if she can make it through this critical time, she'll need to be in captivity. she won't be releasable unfortunate how long until how? how long until you know if she's going to make it through. i mean, talk about a critical time. i you know, i obviously it's a fluid situation. yeah i would say the first couple of weeks or when we get the surprises of this guy's. suddenly they break with pneumonia. suddenly they can't absorb their food. suddenly they get critically dehydrated like she did yesterday. um so i would say once we hit about 23 weeks, i'll be quite optimistic for her physical recovery. um and then we do want to take care of them behaviourally emotionally mentally, make sure she gets in with other mountain lines. as soon as she's healthy enough to handle it. all right. we'll send
8:17 am
her a good thoughts as well. i do want to talk to you about the zoo patrols as well. while we have you because people may have seen those going on in downtown oakland. baby herons are the focus of those patrols, right? issue or the black crowned night heron city of oakland's official bird. uh they have a heron re hundreds of them nest in street trees in downtown oakland, and unfortunately for the babies, that's an adult, um, they fall out of the tree, and normally they would fall into bushes around the trees. but because their street trees they won't go right down on the cement. sidewalks or streets. so what we're doing is we have groups patrolling downtown several times per day so that we can find these babies right away before they get hit by a car hurt by a dog that kind of thing or starve or get dehydrated. then we bring them back to our oakland zoo veterinary hospital , stabilize them and then in partnership with golden gate autobahn with international bird
8:18 am
rescue, we bring them to be rehabilitated, and then we released in a safer place. so great we had to pause in 2020 and 2021. so we're really glad to be back. helping this beautiful nice to be back. nice to see the work you're doing and really a good message as well. for people. hikers you see the mountain lion cubs if people see these baby herons that there is help out there, and you should you know, alert wildlife officials that their their doctor alex herman, we have to leave it there. but we appreciate all the work. please send our good wishes to rose this morning and thanks for all you do there thank you. have a good day. bye. bye bye. alright let's talk whether rosemary, i woke up this morning and i thought, wow, it's really, really cold and i knew it was going to warm up. i knew it was a temporary thing, but but it was a little it made a little harder to get out of bed. yeah yeah, and we continue with this
8:19 am
trend where mother nature seems to be a little bit confused. right here we are in the april and now it feels like winter. all of a sudden we started out in the thirties for some of our inland cities. we had some rain moved through earlier in the weekend, some sierra snow all good news giving you a live look here over the east bay where we are dry today. if you do have outdoor festivities, you may need a jacket early this morning. then let's get into the afternoon temperatures running a little bit below average for this time of year, but not too bad. i'll show you those numbers in just a moment. here is a view of what's happening. we do have a little bit more action that is approaching areas over the pacific northwest, but for us, we are going to remain with mostly sunny skies for today, as well as most of tomorrow. i want to get into our monday we start out dry. and then as we approach six o'clock or so we are still mainly dry. here's a look at a few scattered showers, perhaps just approaching the north end of sonoma county, maybe lake county along the coastline, but where we are expected to remain dry ride in here for the oakland home opener for tomorrow, as we get towards the evening hours
8:20 am
that begins to shift. here's a look at 10 11 o'clock. into the north bay. widespread scattered showers expected but still remaining with mostly cloudy, mainly dry conditions as a folks are leaving that area after the game. let's go, ace. here's a look at what we can expect tuesday morning. the rain does sweep through but by six a.m. it's already pulling out and we are looking at dry conditions for the rest of tuesday, so we'll get a little bit of rain. it looks like it will fall in the overnight hours, and it doesn't look like it's going to impact the morning commute. too much, of course, will be here tracking it for you, because any shift from one hour to the next could make a change. but when it comes to tomorrow's game at the oakland coliseum, mostly cloudy skies are west breeze. and we've got 62 degrees expected. so a bit cool a bit cloudy. a bit breezy, dry 49 right now in oakland, 46 in san francisco upper thirties and napa santa rosa. definitely some of the chillier spots this morning as we get into the afternoon will
