bay middle school teacher facing criminal charges for alleged inappropriate behavior with his students. ktvu sally rasmus here in the studio. now, with the details and concerns me even more victims in this alleged case. good morning, alan. good morning, dave. 60 year old dean walker taught at pine hollow middle school in concord. police arrested him yesterday morning and booked him into contra costa county jail. the teacher taught at pine hollow middle school, and police arrested him. and as we mentioned booked him into jail, he was arrested on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor. we don't have any more details about exactly what he's accused of doing, but police believe the victims in his case were students. these are pictures of walker from his facebook page he taught 7th and 8th graders at pine hollow. middle school. this is something that we will not tolerate and that we take extremely serious. he was placed on leave in march . that's when we that's when we got the report this year that

you know that there was some students who were feeling uncomfortable by him. now dabbling unified school district superintendent adam clark says the district learned about the police investigation about walker and march. he's been on leave since then. walker has the superintendent would not say exactly what walker is accused of doing. or if any of the acts took place on campus. highest priority is keeping their students safe while they're in our care, and we have very high expectations for all those who work for us. whenever we have traumatic events like this, we always provide extra counseling and psychologists at the school. and counselors and psychologists will be at pine hollow middle school later this morning. as this investigation continues, police want anyone who may have additional information on this case to come forward. we'll send it back to you. ali thank you. it was a busy night for police in oakland who were out dealing with a number of side shows. the first one you see on your screen here was in an intersection and uptown oakland right near the ninth street, bart station

around nine o'clock at night. we see a large crowd of people gathering to watch many filming it with their phones. then, just about half an hour later, another sideshow happened in oakland in the area of international boulevard in 29th avenue in the fruitvale district. this one caused a major traffic jam when people tried to leave at both scenes, squealing of tires filled the air as police tried to break up the side shows. something. mm hmm. the oakland police department says it's sideshow unit's been out trying to break up side shows. police say they impounded a number of cars while breaking them up. at this point. we're still working to learn if anyone was injured or arrested. up in the north bay and santa rosa police say one person was shot during a sideshow in the roseland neighborhood. at one point, police say they were about 700 people watching the sideshow. investigators say the victim was brought to a nearby hospital after being shot a number of times in his lower body. tell us he is in critical condition and expected to survive area police were busy.

they were everywhere last night, keeping an eye out for cinco de mayo celebrations and one driver on the peninsula was seen on social media video speeding away from a dui checkpoint. girl. this happened in san carlos. you see the driver after pulling up to the checkpoint, batting up into a ditch, turned the car around and sped away in the wrong direction. we still don't know of san mateo county sheriff's deputies called him the sheriff's office did say they arrested one driver for do y, and they cited dozens more for infractions like driving with a suspended license. well, thousands of people in downtown san jose filled the streets last night celebrating cinco de mayo people here celebrating. it's like even though they're not a hispanic, you know, it's like appreciating the support, you know for my people. cars and pedestrians packed the streets and the celebration that started just after dusk and continued

into early this morning. however many of the downtown restaurant owners say business was still slow compared to the past cinco de mayo celebrations. mainly because of the pandemic. the year before 2000 and 19. by this time was back. people were lying up. the san jose police had more than 200 officers patrolling the downtown area to make sure this was a safe single tamayo celebration. there were some brief side joe's. there were reports of public drunkenness still not clear if any arrests were made. not to let developing story involving the gilroy garlic festival, the official gilroy organizers this week reaffirmed that their popular event has in fact been canceled. the men behind the asparagus festival in stockton now has been lobbying to bring that event to the delta. tony massetti says that he'll set up his own garlic festival, august 13th and 14th at the san joaquin county fairgrounds in stockton. he does not have the gilroy garlic festival branding he is

inviting vendors from that event , gilroy, organizers say it is too expensive to hold the festival there due to liability concerns and the high cost of insurance. time is now 707. the u. s. supreme court bracing for major protests the next few days over the possibility that the high court may overturn roe versus wade. a huge security events now surrounds the court, but the protests won't just be at the court. one group plans to protest outside the homes of six members of the supreme court as well. u s senate will vote next week on a federal law that would protect abortion rights. the bill most likely will not get the 60 votes that needs to prevent a republican filibuster. democrats want senators of both parties to go on the record before the midterm elections. next week, the american people will see crystal clear. that when given the chance to right this wrong the republican party will either side with the

extremists who want to ban abortion without exceptions. or side with women. the group ruth sent us named after former supreme court justice ruth bader ginsburg is circulating an online map of the homes of what it calls six extremist justice is calling for protests at their homes. some lawmakers want new protections for the supreme court justices in his first public appearance since the league chief justice john roberts called it absolutely appalling, made the comments at a judicial conference in atlanta . he also called the leak a betrayal of the confidences of the court. and has ordered a full investigation. time is now 708. house speaker nancy pelosi is pushing back on caused by republicans to focus on the leak itself and who did it. speaker pelosi wants quote as much opposition as possible to the expected actions of the supreme court. it's very damaging. it does violence to the

constitution and violence to women across the country, especially are lower income women, women of color and the rest will be drastically impacted by this, so our focus is not about leak or something that republicans would like to focus on a leak. we're saying no, it's on the damage it does to a woman's dignity and her rights. so that's our focus. other california democrats are joining speaker pelosi and speaking out supporting a woman's right to choose. every woman in america deserves the same protections. that's what's at stake here, so i hope that congress will once again be voting to codify the protections of robie weighed, so that is not subject to litigation, and it's and the supreme court that can swing back and forth. we need to qualify and make it permanent. and senator padilla also says california leaders will make sure abortion rights are protected in california will welcome women who may be coming here from other states, the

providers of both abortion medication and emergency contraceptives say they're seeing a huge increase in sales this week. they telehealth company. aid access helps people get abortion pills. it says it had an unprecedented number of website visitors the day after that draft opinion was leaked. another telehealth company here in san francisco, called north newark's has seen 300% increase in the number of requests for emergency contraceptives, including plan b just this week alone. now the newest member of the state assembly, matt haney, is already taking action on this abortion issue. days after being sworn in last night. matt haney posted on twitter after co authoring a bill that protects californians from civil liability for providing, receiving or helping someone get abortion care. in his post. haney says he's proud to stand with the california legislative

the valley that you know, basically the eastern part of the valley. people are trying to go this way west, so it looks all right. but there is some slowing there and you can see that this congested but again, compared to monday through thursday. i think you'll like it. 7 32. let's go back to the headlines. thank you happening today, the board of trustees at san francisco city college will decide if major budget cuts and layoffs will be put into motion. a campus protest against the action is still happening on the campus will turn to ktvu james torres. your live tensor setup, and teachers are sending a strong message this morning. garcia several tents are set up here this morning at a quick count. definitely more than 15 here. it was about 15 people who originally started this protest earlier in the week, faculty and students altogether in these tents this morning waking up and they're hoping by camping here all week, they'll put enough pressure on the board to cancel plans. to let go. nearly 200 teachers. here's what's at stake. as of this morning city college needs to make up for about a $7 million budget gap in

february, 2021. the score determined it would consider layoffs and so far about 50 teachers have been notified. they are on the chopping block. some of those teachers have been at the school for more than 10 years, while most have been hired within the last five years , the union says, more than 150 full and part time faculty could also be at risk. of losing their jobs if this vote were to go through so far, the teachers processing say, ultimately laying off any teachers will cause harm to the nearly 20,000 students who attend this school. some of those students are here this morning. we're here to express our voice to advocate for ourselves to make sure that our voices are heard in those decision making inspections such as the border trustees to let them know. hey, we do not want these make it right. those out here this morning say they worry about the future of city college. if these faculty budget cuts go through, according to a report from the state's fiscal crisis and management assistance team, the college has seen a 35% decline and student enrollment

school in concord. police say walker could face felony and misdemeanor charges for some of the interactions he's accused of with his students. to something that we will not tolerate and that we take extremely serious. he was placed on leave in march. that's when we that's when we got the report this year that you know that there was some students who were feeling uncomfortable by him. mount diablo unified school district superintendent adam clark says that the teacher has been placed on leave since march and has not returned to any campuses since then. the superintendent would not say exactly what walker is accused of doing or if any of the acts took place on campus. highest priority is keeping their students safe while they're in our care, and we have very high expectations for all those who work for us. whenever we have traumatic events like this, we always provide extra counseling and psychologists at the school. concord police are asking anyone with additional information about the case to

come forward and help with the investigation. it was a busy night for police in oakland. they say they were out dealing with a number of side shows. this first one was at an intersection and uptown oakland very close to the ninth street bar station. this was a scene around nine o'clock, then about half an hour later, another sideshow happened along international boulevard in 29th avenue, the fruitvale district. this one caused a major traffic jam when people try to leave both scenes, the squealing of tires filled the air as police tried to break up the side shows. mm hmm. the oakland police department says it's sideshow unit impounded a number of cars while breaking up the side shows we're working to learn if anyone was injured or arrested up in the north bay and santa rosa police say one person was shot during a sideshow in the roseland neighborhood. at one point, police say they were about 700 people watching that sideshow. investigators say the victim was taken to a nearby hospital after being shot a number of times in his lower body. tell us he's in critical condition and expected to

survive. and police across the bay area had extra patrols last night to stop drivers under the influence video posted on social media shows one driver on the peninsula racing away from a dui checkpoint. girl. this was the scene in san carlos. you can see the driver backed into a ditch turned the car around after pulling up to that checkpoint. the driver then raced away traveling the wrong way down the street. it's still not clear whether cemetery county sheriff's deputies caught up with that driver in whether that person was arrested or not, and thousands of people filled the streets in downtown san jose last night to celebrate cinco de mayo. there's a lot of people out here celebrating. it's like even though they're not a hispanic, you know, it's like appreciating the support, you know for my people. streets were packed with cars and pedestrians in a celebration that started shortly after dusk and continued until early this morning. however many downtown restaurant owners say business was still slow compared to past cinco de mayo celebrations. due mostly to the pandemic. the year before

in a county is facing a lawsuit over its pandemic related eviction moratorium. the california apartment association filed the suit in federal court yesterday . the group says the moratorium violates the fifth amendment, which prohibits the government from taking private property without just compensation. alameda county approved the eviction moratorium during the early days of the pandemic in april of 2020 to help renters facing economic hardship agencies that help people who are homeless around the country are reporting an increase in the number of seniors living on the street. a study led by the university of pennsylvania says the number of elderly people experiencing homelessness will nearly triple by the year. 2032 more than 100,000. it's not yout time because it gets cold and older people. you don't know your body. temperature is not

afternoon, folks here say, by camping out here all week, they hope they're putting enough pressure on the board to cancel those plans to let go. nearly 200 teachers by the end of the next school year. here's what's at stake. city college needs to make up for about a $7 million budget gap. back in february, 2021. the school determined that the best option would be to consider layoffs. so far about 50 teachers have been notified. they are on the chopping block, and some of those teachers have been at the school for more than 10 years, while most have been hired within the last five years. the teachers union here says that more than 150 full and part time faculty can also be at risk of losing their jobs. if that vote goes through tonight, the teachers protesting say, ultimately laying off any of those university teachers would have caused harm to nearly 20,000 students who attend this school. i asked one of these teachers who have been here all week how it's been sleeping in tents with some chilly and wet mornings. this last couple of days has been both challenging and heartwarming honestly, to

see the amount of support from the community people walking through to see the students where it's not just faculty out here. it's students who are who are out here to send a message to the administration that trustees that their needs are not being heard. according to a report from the state's fiscal crisis and management assistance team. the college has seen about a 35% decline in student enrollment over the course of eight years, but they have not reduced any snapping. city college considered layoffs last year but reached a one year agreement with the teachers union to delay that these protesters have been here since the beginning of the week. the board special meeting is set to begin at four o'clock later this afternoon. the only item on its agenda is this issue for seats on the board of trustees are up for election in november. teachers here say their yes vote to some of those layoffs. means a no vote to re election in november. we're live this morning in san francisco. i'm

james torrez ktvu. pots two news, james thank you. some kids in california could soon be able to get a covid vaccine without their parents' permission. proposal in the state legislature would let kids 12 and older get vaccinated on their own. that proposal cleared its first hurdle yesterday. right now, anyone younger than 18 cannot be vaccinated for covid without their parents' consent. the only vaccines they can get on their own or vaccines needed to prevent an std like hepatitis b or hpv. the proposal from san francisco state senator scott wiener still has to clear the full senate and then the assembly. regulators say they are limiting who can get the johnson and johnson vaccine only to people who cannot get other covid vaccines. the fda says they have re examined the data and are concerned about a serious risk of blood clots, especially within the first two weeks after a j and j vaccination. authorities have recommended for months that people who are just getting their first vaccine should get either fighter or moderna shots . instead the head of the cdc is here in california as part of
