7:19 am
which is why we're not really getting rain, but they pack a lot of cold air and they have a lot of dynamics associated with them, which gives us wind gave us thunderstorms last week. the difference in the pressures why it's been so windy. these lows drop in this high, right? there's i don't like that, so it fills it with wind as long as these keep coming in and doing this and marching in that's why the pattern's been so windy. we've had a lot of these lows coming. there's another one swinging by you can see the main one. the parent went up in the gulf of alaska system went right into seattle and also portland. and that just said okay, that allowed the door to open up to a strong difference in the pressure gradients. so the ultimate past had just a 61 black diamond mines. 56 sfo, san francisco brisbane, 41 to 45 pleasant and petaluma. san mateo valero 35 37. mile per hour gusts in the last 24 hours. big fog bank out there. some breaks in it breezy to windy, some drizzle as well for a few, but it will be sunny and cooler today. napa oakland conquered san jose, all dropping on their attempts today, sixties and seventies. tomorrow we'll start

season on the brain. yeah well, it is a little windy out here in rodeo this morning, but i just spoke with one of the battalion chiefs from contra costa fire, they said so far this controlled burn and training exercise is going to go on as planned. you can see where it's going to take place here behind me. some of the fire trucks already arriving. things are supposed to get started around 9 30 this morning even though it is dry, and they said that the humidity out here is still high enough that they think they can have this taking place and so a lot of vehicles and a lot of cruise arriving to take part in this area where this is happening just west of interstate 80 below coming skyway and willow. on the property of the philips 66 refinery, contra costa wildfire training crew and members of the fire academy who will be graduating will take part in this controlled burn training exercise so well firefighters with phillips 66. they started some of this work on friday. and they're going to continue it today and for the rest of this week, so if you see smoke in this that
8:33 am
training exercise, and firefighters say they really need all the practice they can get this year. the way we're looking at this this year. is this this? we expect this is probably going to be the most challenging fire year we've had in in several years. and that doesn't that's saying quite a lot, actually, because the last two years haven't been no cake walks. they've been pretty tough. according to cal fire, california's already had more than 1500 wildfires this year. that's well above average for this time of year. across the state, firefighters and fire agencies are using the strategies of controlled burns and extra training to prepare sport the peak of wildfire season in fact, also today out in your tracy in the altamont pass, alameda county fire and the lawrence livermore lab will be having a controlled burn. later this morning in that area, but here in contra costa county and rodeo, the training exercise controlled burns expected to get started around 9 30 this morning pending weather conditions, but
8:34 am
so far so good a little windy, but it's not dry in about here that they can still go on with the training is planned live in rodeo ali rasmus ktvu. alright thanks for the update, certainly good for people to know if they're headed in the area that the smoke is part of something that's planned because it certainly makes people nervous. well firefighters in vallejo are still watching hotspots from a three alarm grassfire there that started late yesterday afternoon in a field near the solano county fairgrounds. investigators say the fire only burned a few acres and did not come close to any buildings. no word yet on what may have caused that fire investigators also say that planes from a car or possible machinery may have caused a large grass fire in the altamont hills that was first reported yesterday afternoon around 1 30 along interstate 5 80 near livermore. that fire burned more than 130 acres before it was brought under control. fortunately no structures were threatened in investigations underway in the east bay into a series of fires near pittsburgh. the contra costa fire protection district says three small fires

. just a week ago, san jose city council voted to ban ghost guns in the city in an effort to try to fight back against gun violence. joining us now live. we have san jose mayor sam liccardo to talk about that and more mayor. thanks for joining us. thanks guys. good to be with you this morning. it's claudine and, uh, forgive me. i'm sorry. i'm not evil, actually. screen right now. problem standing right next to guys here with us in spirit. alright let's talk about the investigation underway in san jose this morning. we got a double shooting. you got a woman expected to recover a man fighting for his life. but this scene just down the block from the scene of two shootings that are, you know, less than two months ago happened. what are your thoughts this morning about this latest violence and can you give us any new information? yeah i'd received notification this early this morning, and we're obviously still investigating this, so i don't want to speak at all about the ongoing this investigation, but obviously there is a concern nationwide about the growing use
8:37 am
of guns and obviously growing violent crime were saying in too many communities across the country, and we obviously need to do more. ah and certainly we're trying to do what we can on this. in terms of being able to better regulate guns and their distribution, particularly illegal guns, ghost guns ah, and at the same time we've got to do more to be able to prevent violent crime in one way we can do that is by ensuring that when violent criminals are arrested, they're actually kept in custody and not released. particularly where we're seeing patterns of those same individuals committing new crime, failing to appear in court and so forth, and that's something we've been pushing on very hard here in santa clara county, and you're right. it is such a complicated topic. when you talk about how to stop gun violence. i want to talk about the ghost guns that you just mentioned because last week san jose city council voted unanimously to prove this ordinance that would ban these ghost guns in the city so that no possession, manufacturing sale assembly transfer receiving and these laws. i mean, there's
8:38 am
been a lot of talk about how the laws aren't keeping up with the popularity of ghost guns and how much and how many you are seeing, even just in the city of san jose. yeah about a quarter of the illegal guns that we are seizing throughout the city are serialized ghost guns presents all kinds of challenges for us in terms of crime and public safety. we know that folks who get these guns don't have to go through background checks. when the guns are used in crime, they can't be traced. we know these are often guns manufactured at a plastics that are not detectable and standard metal detectors. so there's a lot of concerns we have around these i certainly federal regulations will be helpful and stemming the sales and distribution of these, but local communities for now are really responsible for trying to deal with what is remaining, which is an ocean of guns that are already in our cities. and so this latest ordinance will help. i know a lot of other cities are doing similar here in california. you know how much how important is it to model for
8:39 am
other cities? because certainly everyone's trying to figure out the best practices and the coordination as you mentioned with federal and state. and they're still at the country are grappling with this challenge, and nobody has the perfect solution, so we routinely steal each other's ideas as we should . and as we see things that are working in other communities, and so it's important for large cities like san jose to lead the way. and we're trying to do that . the good news is that least homicide rate is come down a bit, but we are very concerned about the rise and other violent crimes. and you know, we are talking this morning about the brooklyn shooting, of course at the grocery store. they, of course, have the subway shooting there last month. we also have the church shooting in orange county in california. it is almost too much to take when you talk about the amount of violence. it also so much to take when this is not the first time the vita shooting. it brings back all the memories from last year. in terms of we have these conversations after this happens to say, how do we prevent them? and it just seems to keep happening. no matter
8:40 am
where you live, no matter what state no matter what, you know, local laws, and this is what you know. kamala harris, vice president was was calling an epidemic. i think part of the challenges that this dialogue discussions become way too polarized. there are those who are seizing on one solution or another, uh, aligned with their ideology. certainly. proponents of the gun lobby will say it's all about mental health. we'll certainly mental health something we need to invest more in. we certainly need to do more on the front end in terms of investing in prevention as well as ensuring we get officers out there on the street. enforcing at the same time. we need better gun laws, and we need more uniformity in this gun laws because it can't be up to individual cities to be able to stem the tide of gun violence in the country. with more than 300 million guns. we need federal laws. we need much more comprehensive approaches. and we need healing. certainly in these times i know that you guys are demolishing building be at the guadalupe light rail yard in
8:41 am
order to help people move forward at sam accardo, mayor of san jose. thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate your time and your thoughts on this very important topic. thank you, claudia. good to be with you. 8 41 now coming up next on the nine. we're still following the double shooting. that happened overnight in san jose. we'll head back to the scene to bring you a live report outside the home where the investigation is underway. and cannabis growers could get a tax cut what governor newsom is proposing and why already?

8:49 am
been no major issues here, but i just want to show you a highway four is much better from bay point to concord. so things are getting better and again if you can, and you can adjust your commute to when the mileage is just, you know, you get better mileage when you're not i like 8 48. he's a man who always gets good mileage. you come in at four. in the morning, you get good miles. although it's busier than you think, right? yes, the morning never used to be, but it is now. alright pretty good fog bank out there. there are breaks in it, but we've ramped it up, and it's also been a windy pattern. i don't see that changing anytime soon. a good friend chloe up and clear like a windy monday morning and lovely lake county, augusta, 35, mph and forties for lows countywide this morning. how about attempts now. well, i see. fifties and sixties upper lake 53, kelsey ville 58 middletown 63. but there were a lot of forties we're seeing fifties now and sixties. we are running a little cooler, though due to the increase in the low cloud deck,
8:50 am
the wind there was the big story here. ultimate i passed, i think is the leader of the pack at 61 mph black diamond mines out by in between antioco and also clayton. 56 mph sfo yesterday. 45 san francisco and brisbane also yesterday, 41 mph pleasant and petaluma san mateo valero all over 35 to 30. about 40 miles an hour. pretty good, robust fog bank. i mean the water temperature just amazingly cold. still san francisco bowie dropped right back down to a cold 49. when you have water temps this cold and you notice that we've had, like two events where we got warm. they were one and done. that's because another system sweeps by to the north, and that's been the pattern is preventing the high in the desert southwest from building northward. now it's hot down there, but we are in between we get the lowest of the north and the height of the south, so one day will warm up. another day we call down and get the win. well today is that day where we cool down and get the win. mount diablo has been groups of gust about 40 miles an hour 45 only 37, but they are warming up a little bit to 57 degrees.
