family members of the mass shooting victims. investigators now say a gunman spent an entire hour inside an elementary school in uvalde, texas, before he was killed by law enforcement officers. reporter alexis mcadams has the new information on the timeline. don't cry. i'm sorry. mother inrs as 21 white crosses sit in front of this texas elementary school, each one stands for an innocent life lost in the valley school shooting. now another tragedy as the husband of one of the heroic teachers has died, the family saying irma garcia's husband, joe garcia, passed away this morning of a medical emergency. but really, they say he died of a broken heart. this couple were high school sweethearts together for more than 30 years now leave behind four children. so many families left broken the grandpa of jose flores, remembering the last time he saw his 10 year old grandson. now the next time will be at his funeral. little boy

mass shooting. that convention has been on the books for more than two years. okay it was a contractual arrangement. and so you know, we simply cannot cancel a conference or convention because we may not agree with the subject matter. now to texas lawmakers won't be at the convention. their staff say their schedules changed and several musical entertainers pulled out of performing at the convention out of respect for the shooting victims and their families back here in the bay area. people in san leandro remember the victims during an emotional vigil. 21 pairs of shoes were placed outside san leandro city hall to represent the 19 children and two teachers killed in texas. the vigil was hosted by brady and nonprofit group working to prevent gun violence in the us, we spoke to one of the organizers who says she survived a mass shooting when she was just 16 years old when a gunman attacked a church in los angeles. i can't just sit

when the police arrived. but when the confrontation was over , both men involved had been shot and killed by police, and more information is expected during today's virtual town hall meeting, which starts at three pm a memorial for a man who died while in police custody in alameda has been destroyed. friends and family of mario gonzalez created an alter to remember the 26 year old who died after three officers restrained him last year. now they say the memorial was set on fire. alameda fire officials say candles are to blame, but some believe the altar was intentionally burned down. i think that's a shame. it was kept very neat. i saw people coming in maintaining it, and i thought it was a very nice thing not to forget mario and you know it was, i think a plus to the neighborhood. the family has reportedly been given permission by the city to replace the alter time is 408, former oakland police chief and kirkpatrick has

won her lawsuit against the city of oakland, where she claims she was wrongfully terminated by the city. yesterday's jury decision does not mean kirkpatrick will get her job back, but she was awarded $337,000 in damages. in her lawsuit, kirkpatrick claims she was fired because she exposed corruption and abuse of power by the oakland police commission. she was fired in february of 2020 without cause, and she filed her lawsuit. a few months later. a spokesperson for the former police chief says the verdict is an important moment for oakland. the jury agreed with her whistleblowing complaints, they found that she would not have been fired except by the retaliatory acts of the police commission, the mayor and the city of oakland. this is an important victory for trying to reform the oakland police commission and end its corrupt practices. and sam. singer says kirkpatrick is happy about the jury verdict. w oakland city attorney in a statement sent to

22 vita employees are remembering the lives last one year ago in a mass shooting in the south bay to mark the occasion, a private memorial was held at the yard just for families, friends and be to employees. a light rail train blew its horn 10 times to honor each of the employees who died in the tragedy and a candle was lit for each of them. my hope is we continue to heal and move forward. we will never forget those we've lost or the loved ones they left behind. but we can together make it a better place in memory of them and of the community we serve. after the shooting the county worked with to create a resiliency center, a place to offer therapy, counseling and support . pam this morning. we're getting a better idea of what

happened that day when the frantic calls just flooded the san jose police dispatch center during that emergency. ktvu james torres spoke with the dispatchers who are trained to keep a sense of calm in the middle of a tragedy. and as emergency 911 call taker, you learn to expect the unexpected. san jose emergency. latisha thompson tries to master that i just want to rise to vacation to make sure that i'm able to help. one year ago, 15 minutes before the end of her shift, that occasion came shooter guadalupe light rail, latisha answered the first call of the vta light rail mass shooting. is anyone shot? yes, i think eight people. eight people are shot. yeah, he said. at uh, eight people have been shot. and that's when i knew that you know, we both had an assignment. the caller's assignment pass along important

center, she says. in addition to the initial training, each call taker is required to attend retraining for a week. every year. you can't take on somebody else's emotion. that you won't last in this job. if you do, you have to be able to separate it to not hang up. the phone does hang up. when the officers you can't expect gave a visual of what the emotions to stay away happened. when i really broke down because it brought back every shot that i heard on. on the car. worse so. well it wasn't their life you're in, like really sacred moments of people's lives are listening to the most tragic moments live, but they come back to work the next day every day. because they feel honored to exceed the expectations. does he have any weapons? sir of community service? i feel like a superhero. every time that i come to work, those call takers tell me it's important to step

church on fire in pittsburgh. those flames there have been shooting out of the building. it's on central avenue near railroad avenue and railroad land. the building is listed as belonging to the pentecostals of the bay area. that we've been told by our photographer at the scene about 1000 firefighters are there battling these flames and about 1000 parishioners. petitioners have been there for about 20 years. the fire was first reported just before 2 45 this morning. we haven't heard of any injuries at this point or how the fire started. but make sure you stay with ktvu mornings onto will keep bringing you updates. ktvu sally rasmus. we'll have live reports. beginning in the next hour, but again, these are live pictures in the city of pittsburgh and the roof of the church here has collapsed. you can see the firefighters are now in a defensive position. pam roof has collapsed and it is still

burning strong. we're hearing from our photographer on scene who said that they have now moved into a defensible defense mode as that roof collapse in that building in the foreground that i was wondering if that was a church. he said that that is part of the or i thought it was a house. perhaps but he said it's part of the church. but again, we're keeping an eye on that for you, steve. the weather conditions that the first thing i thought about when we first saw the flames shooting up was the wind that we've seen and hopefully doesn't take embers. you know it didn't look like it . but that can be a windy area, but it didn't look like you know. of one of those other things. i'll take a look at here in just a minute here fifties on the temps here across the board from santa rosa to san jose, all mid fifties here. i don't see that too often, but that's what we have with some of that cloud cover over us. low clouds, some higher clouds going to lead maybe slightly warmer today compared to yesterday, but still sixties and seventies on the temps. alright salles here, did they did they resolve that chase on the bay bridge? they did.

biden will head to texas on sunday to meet with families of the mass shooting at that elementary school reporter kevin corke, says law enforcement officers in uvalde, texas, are now defending their response to the deadly gunfire at rob elementary school. texas law enforcement is facing criticism over their response time to tuesday's deadly mass shooting, and you've aldi rushed in and like and all that, like, we didn't see that. have a lot more could have been prevented to prepared reports indicate the 18 year old suspected gunman who killed 19 children and two teachers that rob elementary remained inside the school for about an hour before being confronted by a u. s border patrol team who then shot and killed him. the texas department of public safety says officers on the scene didn't initially entered the school because they face sunfire and we're awaiting backup police armed response expert says priority is an officer who is responding to the active shooter is a neutralizer shooter. you may see.

new federal gun legislation. they vowed to come up with new laws that would keep guns out of the hands of possible mass murderers. these negotiations come after senate republicans blocked a domestic terrorism bill. it was a response to the suspected hate crime killing of 10 people in buffalo, new york two weeks ago. that bill had strong support among democratic leaders on capitol hill. this bill will give the government the tools to monitor find and arrest these evil actors before they have a chance to inflict violence on their communities. meantime secretary of education miguel cardona is rejecting calls to give weapons to teachers as a way to prevent mass scores shootings and is calling for tougher gun laws. let's not normalize this. let's use every out of influence that we have to get something done to help prevent this from happening again. democrats say these new negotiations on federal gun legislation will be at the top

of the agenda when lawmakers come back from the memorial day holiday. us senator alex padilla of california is among the democrats on capitol hill now calling for tougher gun safety legislation. padilla spoke at a rally in washington, d c with other members of congress and several survivors of gun violence, he said the american people are now demanding strong action from federal lawmakers, not just talk. yes. we offer our condolences. yes we offer our thoughts and prayers. for thoughts and prayers alone is not enough to prevent future tragedies from happening. senator padilla says federal lawmakers must immediately passed laws requiring background checks for guns purchased online and at gun shows. he also supports red flag laws that are designed to keep guns away from people who could harm themselves or others now stay with us here on mornings and two for complete coverage of the recent mass

going the other way trying to get out of town. for the long holiday weekend at 601, let's go back to the headlines. we have breaking news in the east bay city of pittsburgh firefighters battling this big fire at a church has been going on for about for several hours. we first had it on live pictures for you in four o'clock this morning. we've been seeing flames coming from different parts of that church building. you can see people outside praying outside the church. ktvu is ali rasmus. also there. you're the very latest on this fire. what's happening now? dave this fire started just before three o'clock this morning and take a look at is still going smoke still coming from what used to be the roof of this building and conceived firefighters positioned all around this building. and directing their hoses from the from upwards down into the building where the fire is still going, and this is an 11,000 square foot building. firefighters have told us how challenging it is to try and

tackle this fire. in fact, what they're doing right now is there in defensive mode, so they say it's too dangerous to go inside to fight this fire, so they are just stationed around the perimeter of this building and trying to prevent this fire from spreading. but if you look at the top left there. you can see one of the fire trucks behind the building and flames still coming up from the roof of this building. in fact, just before four o'clock this morning, part of that roof completely collapsed. photographer crook. capture that dramatic video. when that happened just around four o'clock. this is the pentecostals of the bay area church. that's the building that is on fire here. it's in pittsburgh. it's located on central and railroad avenue. a lot of streets in the area completely closed off because of the fire response. this is an older building at least 50 to 75 years old. the church's occupied it for the last 20 years or so how this fire started is not known. the good news, though no one has been injured. no one was inside when the fire started. but the contra costa county fire captain explained some of the challenges they face in tackling this fire. cruz responded. they

were exploring for fire inside the building when an a c unit on the roof collapsed. the collapse based on the building, geometry created and over pressurization events similar to a backdraft, which blew out the front doors of this building. oh, my god. the video you're looking at right here are members of this church this church has about 1200 members. they do services in english and spanish pentecostals of the bay area, and so when some of the members of this church found out what had happened here, they came to this corner, and they gathered together to pray to talk about what they were going to do next. and what's the path forward? back out here? live. i want to show you this live picture because again. every once in a while. we think we see just smoke, and then the flames just sort of erupt again from the inside of this building, so that's why firefighters are going inside to fight this fire. they are just trying to keep it

is he going to use it for? earlier this week, texas governor greg abbott and other texas political leaders said a quick response by law enforcement officers saved lives. back here in the bay area . people in san leandro remember the victims during an emotional vigil, 21 pairs of shoes were placed outside san leandro city hall to represent the 19 children and two teachers killed in texas. the vigil was hosted by brady and nonprofit group working to prevent gun violence in the us, we spoke to one of the organizers who says she survived a mass shooting when she was just 16 years old when a gunman attacked a church in los angeles. i can't just sit idly by as this keeps happening in our country day after day. i now have two little girls of my own , and it terrifies me to know that they're going to live in a world. where this is potentially going to happen at their school at any given moment. organizer's

was a danger for different people for different altercations. reports from from people who were asking for help . who are who are warning the b ta saying, this is a guy that we think might go postal. now the santa clara county sheriff's office is also named in one of those lawsuits. the different cases may eventually be merged in combined into one big lawsuit. today a virtual town hall meeting held by san francisco police about the latest deadly police shooting last thursday. san francisco police rushed to reports of a man with a knife attacking an unarmed man in the dogpatch neighborhood. it's still not clear exactly what happened when police arrived, but when the confrontation was over, both men involved had been shot and killed by police. more information is expected during today's virtual town hall meeting. it starts at three

o'clock time now. 6 16, former oakland police chief, and kirkpatrick has won her lawsuit against the city of oakland, where she claims she was wrongfully terminated by the city. yesterday's jury decision does not mean kirkpatrick will get her job back, but she was awarded $337,000 in damages. in her lawsuit. kirkpatrick claims she was fired because she exposed corruption and abuse of power by the oakland police commission. she was fired in february of 2020 without cause, and she filed her lawsuit. a couple of months later. a spokesperson for the former police chief says the verdict is a very important moment for oakland. the jury agreed with her whistleblowing complaints, they found that she would not have been fired except by the retaliatory acts of the police commission, the mayor and the city of oakland. this is an important victory for trying to reform the oakland police commission and end its corrupt practices and spokesperson sam

singers as kirkpatrick is happy with the jury verdict, now the oakland city attorney in a statement sent to ktvu said quote we're thankful to the jury for their service. after weighing the facts of the case, the jury decided, miss kirkpatrick is not entitled to any more than the one year severance of city was ready and willing to pay when she was terminated in 2020. the genie has started its action to move power lines underground in the bay area, the utility says 43 miles of electrical lines in the bay area will be buried this year. a total of 175 miles of transmission and distribution lines will be buried across the state in 2022. next year. that number goes up to 400. miles proposed new rules here in california would require insurance companies to take into account homeowners and their efforts to fireproof their homes when they set premiums for home insurance, according to the press. democrat the california department of insurance proposed some new rules after an

francisco. two more in the 10 people killed so far this year in traffic accidents. now family and friends held a moment of silence. they wrote remembrances for the victims on yellow hearts. the vigil was held at third and mission, the same intersection where a mother and daughter from florida were hit and killed by a taxi this past weekend. it's an intersection, organizers say is particularly dangerous. as we hold these victims in our hearts. we also need to call on our city to be doing more. we have too many streets that are dangerous and prioritizes traffic moving quickly over people's safety in our lives. another group wants the city to prioritize pedestrians over cars and trucks . they want crosswalks to be improved with red light cameras and for the city to limit right terms on red. researchers say drivers maybe a little more careful when they are behind the wheel of a tesla. another study found. the crash rate was 91%

lower for a person driving a tesla when compared to win. that same person drove another car they own. researchers also found those figures were much different for porsche drivers. that same study found people driving the electric porsche where 55% more likely to get into an accident. then, when they drove another car they own a bill that would allow buildings to go past the legal height limit is now headed to the state senate for approval. the measure passed the assembly and have signed into law would allow developers to build up to three stories higher than the maximum height limit in areas where there is low vehicle traffic, such as downtown areas . a portion of those units would have to be dedicated to low income families. the barn board of directors is taking public comment on proposals to build 3600 housing units at the parking lots at the ashby and north berkeley stations. now the city already voted to raise the height limit on those sites to allow for 12 story buildings.

meet with family members of the victims of this week's deadly school shooting. police officers in your body texas are defending their response to tuesday's gunfire at rob elementary school . investigators now say the 18 year old gunman spent an entire hour inside the school building before he was killed by law enforcement officers. this new information on the timeline is only adding to the sadness and outrage surrounding the deaths of 19 children and two teachers. rushed in. and like all that, like we didn't see that more could have been prevented. prepared your first priority is an officer who is responding to the active shooter is a neutralizer shooter who resided in earlier this week. texas governor greg abbott, another political leaders in the state, had said a quick response by law enforcement officers saved lives . our time now takes 30 to a bipartisan group of us senators now working on a compromise on new federal gun legislation about to come up with new laws
