assault with a deadly weapon violating probation place in sacramento have arrested a third suspect in last month's mass shooting in the downtown area. officers say i'm tula, peyton was taken into custody in las vegas saturday night. he now faces murder charges in connection with the gunfire that killed six people and wounded 12 others during the early morning hours of april, 3rd this was a gun battle between two rival gangs. the evidence shows that the rival gangs gang members armed themselves with weapons. two brothers, smiley and deandre martin are already in custody, accused of taking part in last month's mass shooting in downtown sacramento. time is now 40 to the justice department now plans to examine how texas law enforcement officials responded to last tuesday elementary school shooting and yuval, d texas. the family members and community members are angry that the police didn't rush into the

school to rescue the children as soon as they knew a gunman was inside. officials say they were treating the scene as a barricaded suspect, not an active shooter. the president biden and the first lady joe biden met privately with the families of the 21. people who died as well as with other members of the school community , who say the president's visit helped them. a lot of hurting hearts everywhere, whether it's at the church or the school or here. i think it's good that he came to express his sympathy for the community, and i believe the community appreciates that as well. this is a time to come together and set differences aside. the bidens also saw the temporary display honoring the shooting victims. with photos, flowers and candles for each of the 21 victims. community leaders say more should be done to prevent another tragedy like this one. but tougher gun control measures have been bogged down in congress for years and here at home. the church in alameda has a special

tribute to the polity shooting victims outside of towers united methodist church will note street there are 21 chairs with flowers in the names of the 19 children and two teachers killed in that mass shooter. tens of thousands of airline travelers are having a tough time getting around this holiday weekend because hundreds of us flights are canceled and thousands more are delayed. want to take you live to san francisco international airport this morning flight aware reports, almost 5000 flights were delayed yesterday, 546 flights were canceled. mostly because of bad weather and airline staffing shortages. fairly. we had implement weather. and so my flight got delayed four times and council and i finally arrived in atlanta this morning. three o'clock a m. in the morning. it was just a horrible experience. already today, 992 flights have been canceled by airlines around the world. more than 4300 flights have been delayed by 15 minutes or more so far, bay area flights are off to

a pretty good start. only two flights canceled at sfo one flight canceled at san jose in 26 local flights are delayed. but at this early hour airports don't have very much traffic, with most airlines starting service at six a.m. so the numbers may start to change in the next few hours. time is about 405 millions of people playing memorial day road trip this holiday weekend and for california drivers, gas prices are hitting record highs. ktvu is elissa harrington talked to people who had tough decisions to make because of those gas prices. can't even fill my tank . more pain at the pump exactly 35 miles on that. gas prices in california soar above $6 a gallon at this horrendous chevron it's $6.49 per gallon. scott's billman said he has stopped driving his pickup truck as much as he would like. can't really even afford to drive this to my normal working back every

day. i have a motorcycle. i used to get 70 miles to the gallon, so and drive that resident jim bean said he usually works from home so does not have to drive too much but is still considering big changes concerns about oil based products anyway , so i think eventually we'll switch over to all electric. this is probably my last gas car. the golden state has the highest gas prices in the country with one gallon of unleaded gas, averaging $6.13. the national average is $4.61. industry analysts blame the global supply crisis, a shortage of crude oil and russia's war with ukraine for these record high prices, not too excited about it being expensive, but pretty much of a choice. got to get to work and do the things i need to do. um hope we get some relief soon. relief is not expected anytime soon, especially following what's expected to be a busy memorial day weekend. i don't foresee oil

prices really dropping all that dramatically and if more people are hitting the road, and you have this sort of increased demand at gas stations you could see these prices stay high throughout all of summer and into the fall. got to 25 bucks like i'm not going to fill up, especially when it's like this expensive drivers like blanca jimenez only put 20 or 30 bucks in the tank to avoid spending too much to fill up. at this emeryville 76 station. a gallon of gas will cost you $6.79. it's a lot because you know, i commute over to tanner fell for work, so doesn't last very long . gas prices take away money from grocery shopping, and she's not able to put that much into savings. if prices continue to climb drivers i talked to said they do have a breaking point. i don't know maybe $10.10 dollars a gallon. we're not going to be going too many places expects nearly 35 million people to travel by car this holiday weekend. elissa harrington ktvu,

fox two news. all right. thank you. alyssa despite plans to try to bring some relief to californians paying high gas prices, don't expect it any time soon. governor newsom and lawmakers have not worked out a deal to provide some kind of statewide rebate to help pay for increasing gasoline prices. the governor wants to send $400 to every car owner in the form of a debit card, but some democrats in the state legislature want to send everyone refund checks. governor newsom says the legislature's plan could delay rebates until october time is 408 in the east bay near pittsburgh. strong winds pushed the vegetation fire over the weekend. it started saturday, but reignited yesterday burning 50 acres in the wetlands near the river. contra costa county firefighters fought it on the ground and from the air is large plumes of smoke filled the scarred officials say no homes or buildings are in danger. the flames are going to smolder for a few days. the cause of the

fire is under investigation. and people celebrating memorial day weekend need to be aware of the high fire danger. there is a red flag warning for parts of solano county again this morning and farther inland towards the sacramento valley. that means firefighters are warning people who are breaking out those charcoal grills for holiday party. you need to keep an eye on those fires as high winds are in the forecast again. one big tip from fire crews make sure the grill is not set up somewhere in the direct path. of the wind. that's where we really get into danger, because as soon as the spark hits these dry grass behind me that fire can carry, especially with 15 to 20 mile an hour winds. usually when it's really windy, i just used the gas grill. it's a little more controllable with the lid. we try to make sure we barbecue kind of like a you know when the sun is going down a little bit where it's a little bit cooler and not too much heart to where it can pick up. fire crews are also warning against memorial day bonfires and reminding people not to use any outdoor

francisco presidio for memorial ceremonies. also at 11 a.m. there are ceremonies at the oak hill cemetery in san jose. in walnut creek civic park and san jose's mission city memorial park earlier this weekend, scouting groups decorated the gravesites at the golden gate national cemetery in san bruno. each one of these scouts takes a reference that i am honoring you . i am honoring what you've done, and i'm honoring your dedication to america. all the scouts. we talked tuesday they decorated the graves during the pandemic, but this year, it seems even more important since more people will be coming to the cemetery honoring fallen heroes. california state parks will be free to military members and veterans today that includes several state parks here in the bay area like mount diablo state park and henry cowell redwoods state park service members must show a military i d or proof of

discharge to get that free admission. many businesses and most public buildings will be closed today for the federal holiday that includes all government offices and the postal service in courts. there's no delivery service by amazon, fedex or ups, banks and public schools are also closed and there's no trading on the u. s stock market today. most public transit agencies are running on reduced holiday schedules today as well. our time is 4 34. well leading up to memorial day there was a special tribute to people who served aboard a warship with special significance here in the bay area. the uss san francisco was part of some of the most significant fighting in the pacific during world war two. ktvu is greg ligon shows us how people gathered over the weekend , remembering those who died. color guard helped open the ceremony at fort miley, where more than 200 gathered to honor our fallen soldiers who served aboard the uss san francisco during world war two. many in the crowd had family members who served on the ship. thank you

for being here to make this moment important so that we never forget those from our families from our nation's that went out. in the next uniform of their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. the uss san francisco was one of the most storage ships that fought in the pacific. john l. williamson was an anti aircraft gunner. and it was one of the 100 plus who died in the battle of guadalcanal, though he never met his uncle, troy thorpe traveled from and o. it's important to me because here's a person that gave their life at the age of 21 for their country, and i just don't want them to be forgotten. europe's shared a photo of what he says is the only known painting depicting the uss san francisco. during that infamous 1942 november battle that cost so many their lives. at this year's service, there was a special posthumous chair of honor. petty officer leonard harmon, the first black man to have a naval ship named in his honor. he too, died aboard the uss san

francisco while trying to save the lives of others. professor james armstead read the words of the president as he posthumously awarded harmon, the navy cross in 1943. he did deliberately exposed himself. the hostel gunfire in order to protect the shipmate. and as a result of this courageous deed was killed in action. while many here know well, the personal pain of losing a loved one in war, there are countless other americans who don't john mcknight says. regardless it's important for everyone to recognize our service members on memorial day , people will go out and enjoy this weekend. i hope they celebrate. i hope the barbecue i hope they have all the foods they love. and i hope they take one extra moment to remember that somebody out there gave their lives so that we could have the freedoms we enjoy this weekend. during the service. the american flag flew at half staff , but not for the reason you might think organizers held a moment of silence and acknowledge the gesture was to honor the victims of the school shooting in texas. greg legans.

looks like we're picking that back up friday before memorial day this year t s a reported more than 2.3 million people checking in for flights. travelers say they're willing to make the summer trips despite the rising cost of travel. definitely more expensive, but you know, the planes are full, so supply and demand. in fact, the airlines don't have enough staff, so i don't really see it coming down too soon. depending where in the country you have been traveling. you may have been on one of those about 1000 flights canceled, according to the web site flight, aware only about 100 flights nationwide are canceled as of this morning, many of them coming in from atlanta, some of those delays or whether related per airline officials, but back here at sfl not too much to worry about just yet. airlines shortages, they say, may also contribute to some of those delays. so just be sure if you have a flight this morning before you head out the door. check the status and plan accordingly. we're live this

morning and sfo. i'm james torres. ktvu fox two news. alright, james. thank you. time is 503 millions of people planned memorial day road trips this holiday weekend and for california driver's gasoline prices are hitting record highs . ktvu elissa harrington talked to people who had some tough decisions to make because of those gas prices. can't even so, my cycle more pain at the pump exactly 35 miles on that gas prices in california soar above $6 a gallon at this surrender chevron it's $6.49 per gallon. scott's billman said he has stopped driving his pickup truck as much as he would like. can't really even afford to drive this to my normal working back every day. i have a motorcycle. i used to get 70 miles of the gallon, so dr. that resident jim bean said he usually works from home so does not have to drive too much but is still considering big changes. concerns about oil

based products anyway, so i think eventually we'll switch over to all electric. this is probably my last gas car. the golden state has the highest gas prices in the country with one gallon of unleaded gas, averaging $6.13. the national average is $4.61. industry analysts blamed the global supply crisis, a shortage of crude oil and russia's war with ukraine for these record high prices, not too excited about it being expensive, but much of a choice to get to work and do the things i need to do. um, hope we get some relief soon. relief is not expected anytime soon, especially following what's expected to be a busy memorial day weekend. i don't foresee oil prices really dropping all that dramatically and if more people are hitting the road, and you have this sort of increased demand at gas stations you could see these prices stay high throughout all of summer and into the fall. 25 bucks like i'm

hall. now it's put on by the volunteer firefighters association. in years past, they've served up to 2000 plates , and it raises thousands of dollars for those firefighters. then at 9 45 this morning, the veterans ceremony starts at lightened square. that's followed by a parade at 10 30. now that route it's 1.6 miles long going from throckmorton avenue at miller avenue, and then it ends at tamil pious, high school. so be aware that some of those streets will be closed as that parade happens today. now after the parade. there is also a party for the kids. it involves live music. it has foods. it is a carnival for the community to really come together. this is something that they haven't been able to do in the last two years because of the pandemic, so this is really a way to get back together and to celebrate together, so it will be a long day here of fun events planned for this community live in mill valley. amanda king donut ktvu, fox. tunis alright, amanda. thank

you, thomas for 4 33 5 33 leading up to this memorial day there was a special tribute to people who served aboard a warship with special significance here in the bay area. the uss san francisco was part of some of the most significant fighting in the pacific. during world war two ktvu is greg ligon shows us how people got together this weekend to remember those who died. the color guard helped open the ceremony at fort miley, where more than 200 gathered to honor our fallen soldiers who served aboard the uss san francisco during world war two. many in the crowd had family members who served on the ship. thank you for being here to make this moment important so that we never forget those from our families from our nation's that went out. in the next uniform of their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. the uss san francisco was one of the most storage ships that fought in the pacific. john l. williamson was an anti aircraft gunner. and it

was one of the 100 plus who died in the battle of guadalcanal, though he never met his uncle, troy thorpe traveled from las vegas to honor him and others. it's important to me because here's a person that gave their life at the age of 21 for their country, and i just don't want them to be forgotten photo of what he says is the only known painting depicting the uss san francisco. during that infamous 1942 november battle that cost so many their lives. at this year's service, there was a special posthumous chair of honor. petty officer leonard harmon, the first black man to have a naval ship named in his honor. he too, died aboard the uss san francisco while trying to save the lives of others. professor james armstead read the words of the president as he posthumously awarded harmon, the navy cross in 1943. he did deliberately exposed himself. the hostel gunfire in order to protect the shipmate. and as a result of this courageous deed

businesses. their farms, steve locomotives family had been in san francisco since 18 98 family and others we had to live in a horse stall. horse stall that was full of manure and urine. tan fran in san bruno was one of dozens of makeshift assembly centers on the west coast from their people were transported to one of the 10 concentration camps or other detention centers across the nation. forced to live for years in drafty barracks behind barbed wire on desolate land, families sometimes separated livelihoods and lives lost. president franklin delano roosevelt signed executive order 9066 on february 19th 1942. the order authorized the military to create military exclusion zones and four civilians out. executive order. 9066 never mentioned japanese immigrants or citizens. it was at san francisco's presidio that lieutenant general john dewitt decided to declare the entire

west coast. a military exclusion zone specifically targeting all persons of japanese ancestry. this is general the rates office. national park service ranger james osborne says to its historic office is still preserved on the second floor of a presidio building. that's now a private school in this office , march and 1942. that he's signed all those assembly orders signed 108 exclusion orders about 80,000 of those incarcerated were american citizens, many of them children. so really, this is where it became racist. you know these and there were no not on the east coast, saying people of german ancestry all have to report, osborne says. ironically dewitt knew that less than a mile from his office housed in building number 6 40 was a secret project. the military intelligence school where 58 japanese americans were training

to become wartime interpreters, loyal soldiers even as the law punished their parents and this was top secret. they could not tell their families. under court martial. they were threatened not to tell anyone, their whereabouts and what they were doing the school now a museum also honors the tens of thousands of young japanese americans who joined the military. the 1/100 infantry battalion for 42nd regimental combat team became the most highly decorated unit in history for its size and length of service. other americans took a different path to show their patriotism. karen korematsu says her father, fred, stayed in the east bay for months until he was caught and arrested in san leandro for disobeying military orders. all due process of law was denied. so the japanese americans never were charged with the crime access to an attorney or had their day in court, and my father thought it was wrong as an american citizen . korematsu is legal battle when all the way to the u. s supreme

court he lost in the 63 decision. but at the presidio officers club and exhibit has a quote from dissenting justice owen roberts, who called it quote a clear violation of constitutional rights. in the 80 years since executive order 9066 . there's been a national reckoning of the wrongs, researchers and covered secret government documents showing no japanese american espionage or need for mass incarceration in the courts. judges vacated convictions of three men korematsu gordon here, obayashi and min yasui. and in 1988, president reagan signed the civil liberties act, providing in official apology and granting redress of $20,000 to the surviving incarcerate these but the letter of apology and reparations checks from president bush came too late. for many who had already passed on. at the presidio officers club. a wall of windows bears the names of the incarcerate these satoshi, he bees name is

helped open the ceremony at fort miley, where more than 200 gathered to honor our fallen soldiers who served aboard the uss san francisco during world war two. many in the crowd had family members who served on the ship. thank you for being here to make this moment important so that we never forget those from our families from our nation's that went out. in the next uniform of their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice. the uss san francisco was one of the most storage ships that fought in the pacific. john l. williamson was an anti aircraft gunner. and it was one of the 100 plus who died in the battle of guadalcanal, though he never met his uncle, troy thorpe traveled from las vegas to honor him and others. it's important to me because here's a person that gave their life at the age of 21 for their country, and i just don't want them to be forgotten. europe's shared a photo of what he says is the only known painting depicting the uss san francisco. during that infamous 1942 november
