eastern contra costa county has left one person dead, four others hurt. it happened not far from the byron airport and chp investigators say a car and suv collided just south of camino diablo. investigators say the driver of an acura was swerving across that narrow highway just before the collision. the two vehicles struck each other kind of semi head on, which caused the suburban to lose control over the side of the road, strike a poor cause and pull to go down. nine people were in the suburban, including the person who died for other passengers were treated for moderate injuries. chp thinks they were all foreign workers heading to one of the farms in brentwood. the driver of the accurate tried to run away, but the chp tracked him down. the byron highway was closed for almost four hours during the investigation, and also wild that toppled poll was removed. happening today. and happening today, a new milestone

reached in san leandro by an east bay landmark lorenzo theater, which has been closed since 1982 took another step towards being restored theater on his sperry in boulevard has remained a part of the community skyline with its very distinctive tower. alameda county bought the building after several groups unsuccessfully tried to restore it. today a building signing signing ceremony will be held at the theater for the start of the final stage of restoration, installing the theater's new roof. when this restoration work is completed, the lorenzo will be a restaurant that features live performances today, east bay congressman eric swalwell will meet with the alameda county sheriff's office and community members. about last weekend's incident at the san lorenzo library. now, investigators say, video that was posted online shows a group that may be linked to the far right organization. the proud boys. disrupted a story our where a drag queen was reading a

overall. nationwide only 30% of children between five and 11 years old are fully vaccinated. many parents say they're leaning towards vaccinating their young children as soon as possible. i think that there are a lot of very intelligent. smart scientists who are investigating the vaccines that have done very thorough research. and i'm confident that that is a good thing for my children. i can see why parents might be a little hesitant. but i think it's a good thing, and i think that once it's available will want to get our son vaccinated. the cdc still has to approve these vaccine shots, which could become available as early as next week. well, a recent report finds the way students in san francisco being taught how to read is not working. the curriculum could be to blame. a review from this school year found much of the educational program for k through five students is insufficient in its

elect yesenia sanchez will be the first woman and latina to hold that office is something that i believe will bring a level of compassion and empathy . sanchez beat out her boss for term. incumbent sheriff greg ahern definitely did not expectn enough votes to forgo of runoff election in november. the hayward native joined the department when she was 19 and rose through the ranks for the past 25 years. for the past two years, she has been the commander of the jails, it definitely needed more focus and attention and that's something that i will be bringing, she says she will increase staffing to address problems there. the department has dealt with lawsuits and costly settlements for the way deputies have handled mentally ill inmates and in custody deaths. sanchez says the current practice of not providing information to their loved ones, which she describes as a failure will change. we

need to start treating people as people, sanchez says. her priorities will include talking to the rank and file about what changes are needed. and holding town hall meetings to address the concerns of alameda county residents. the 44 year old says her own life experience has prepared her for this job. i have experienced homelessness. i've experienced working three jobs in my youth. sanchez pledges she will not cooperate with ice unless there is a federal criminal warrant. she tells me running the jails gave her the confidence and experience she felt she needed to become. sheriff sanchez says the loss of her brother to cancer last year inspired her to run. he was fearless. and so that that resonated with me. and that really is what pushed me to just go for it. sanchez will officially become the new alameda county sheriff after sheriff ahern retires january 3rd. she says she will listen and engage the community as well

as hold department members accountable. in dublin, amberleigh ktvu, fox two news. thank you. and alameda county sheriff greg ahern issued a statement congratulating sanchez. he also said quote it has been my honor and privilege to serve as your sheriff for the past 16 years, i will retire from office at the end of my term on january 3rd 2023 after nearly 43 years of public service, my administration will work to ensure a smooth transition. now another latina also unseated a longtime bay area sheriff and coming up we'll hear from christina corpus in san mateo county about her vision for law enforcement. state utility regulators are proposing pg and e pay $12 million in fines for mishandling planned power shutoffs now the california public utilities commission wants to penalize pg and e another power companies in the state for multiple violations. the commission did

space ordinance, and unfortunately that fell through , but it just shows you that it is a piece of property that is valuable to the community of creek. critics say the development would require massive grading and leveling and removing 400 trees they want to develop to consider developer to consider a less impactful design that fits with the natural surroundings. adult education teachers rallied at the west contra costa county school board meeting in richmond. okay? now the teachers are calling on the school board to save the older adults program. teachers also want to restore online literacy and e s l classes for adults. their main demand is for the district to reach a contract agreement with the adult education teachers union. we're asking for the district tube. to hurry up and make it our final agreements and sign our contract . we've been waiting for four

years. yeah, the first contract. to union negotiators say they received letters from the district last week notifying them that they were being let go now. the district later rescinded that letter, saying it was a clerical error. the west contra costa district board of education, heard angry public comments about some of those issues last night. this is part of a pattern of disrespect towards our adult school program that has only gotten worse with the union busting termination. now rescinded of our new unions, president ken ryan and our vice president. christian pursley. who have been extraordinarily effective lead teachers. and our dsl program for decades. the superintendent says an investigation is underway into why the teachers received the layoff notices now. in a statement, the district also said it is negotiating in good faith, adding quote. we anticipate reaching resolution

lawsuits and costly settlements for the way deputies have handled mentally ill inmates and in custody deaths. sanchez says the current practice of not providing information to their loved ones, which she describes as a failure will change. we need to start treating people as people. sanchez says her priorities will include talking to the rank and file about what changes are needed. and holding town hall meetings to address the concerns of alameda county residents. the 44 year old says her own life experience has prepared her for this job. i have experienced homelessness. i've experienced working three jobs in my youth. sanchez pledges she will not cooperate with ice unless there is a federal criminal warrant. she tells me running the jails gave her the confidence and experience she felt she needed to become. sheriff sanchez says the loss of her brother to cancer last year inspired her to run. he was fearless. and so that that resonated with me. and

in neighborhoods and we saw oakland department of transportation, adding these new signs to foothill boulevard near garfield yesterday. this area has been the site of several tragic crashes and pedestrian deaths in recent years. in october, 2019 of 45 year old woman was killed and a four year old girl seriously injured when they were struck by a car in the crosswalk of foothill in 20 seconds. earlier that same year, a six year old boy was killed by a hit and run driver as he crossed the street with his mom and uncle at foothill and 26th street by the end of this year, department of transportation says it wants to add these 15 mile per hour zones. around at least 20 schools in the city. we've reached out to city leaders to try and get a full list of those schools in locations. and so we're hoping to have an update on that throughout the morning and later this morning, the mayor and other city leaders will have a news conference about this new initiative to try and cut down on traffic deaths. by lowering the speeding limits around these schools that's scheduled to happen 10 o'clock our time. live in oakland. ali rasmus ktvu.

fox. two news. thank you, ali. a recent report finds the way students in san francisco are being taught how to read is not working. the curriculum might be to blame. a review from this school year found much of the educational programs for k through fifth grade students is insufficient in its ability in teaching elementary school students how to read. there are several recommendations from that report to help solve the problem, including better training for teachers and improving the curriculum to better fit the state standards. time now, 604 teachers for adult education rallied in richmond at the west contra costa county school board meeting. okay? of the teacher is what the school board to save the program for older adults. they also want to restore online literacy and e s. l classes for adults remain. demand is with the school district to work out a contract with the adult education teachers union. we're asking for

looks pretty good from crockett all the way out toward the elsa bronte and berkeley area. 6 31. let's go back to the headlines. what happening today? the public invited to a very special memorial service for a man who literally changed the face of local and national politics family of former san jose mayor and congressman norman eta, asking the public to say a final farewell to a man who dedicated his life to public service. andre senior joins us now with a look back at his career and some of the details of today's ceremony. very touching ceremony will be happening today. norman had died at the age of 90 from a heart ailment last month. he was born and spent his early years in san jose. but when he was 10 years old, he and his family and thousands of other japanese americans were sent to internment camps after the bombing of pearl harbor. but the low point in us race relations did not change when that is sense of loyalty to the united states. and he wanted to work to make america better. he started by earning a degree from uc berkeley, which led to a career

in politics, starting with a seat on the san jose city council in the 19 sixties. that led to his being elected mayor of san jose in 1971. for me, and i believe a lot of championships americans. it was a very proud moment. well he was the first japanese american mayor of any major american city that led to a higher national profile, and he ran for congress, where he worked with democrats and republicans to accomplish what he thought needed to be done. while there he guided the civil liberties act that had the us officially apologize for injustices inflicted on japanese americans during world war two. he also pushed for more funding for the faa and the international airport in san jose is named in his honor that it was the first asian american to serve as a cabinet secretary , first as secretary of commerce in the clinton administration, then was the only democrat in george w. bush's cabinet, where he was transportation secretary. he called for the grounding of

struck each other kind of semi head on, which caused the suburban to lose control over the side of road strike a poor, causing a pool to go down. the nine people were in that suburban, including the person who died for other passengers were treated for moderate injuries. the chp thinks they were all farm workers heading to one of the farms in brentwood. the driver of the accurate tried to run away, but the chp tracked him down. byron highway was closed for almost four hours during the investigation and during the period where that toppled poll was removed. state utility regulators are proposing pg and e pay $12 million in fines for mishandling planned power shutoffs now the california public utilities commission wants to penalize pg and e and other power companies in the state for multiple violations. the commission did not specify those violations, but says its goal is to ensure utility companies follow safety guidelines and properly notify
