from ktvu. fox two news. this is mornings on to welcome back gasia mikaelian. good morning. i'm dave clark. it's monday, august 1st. and what do you say on the first day? rabbit rabbit or bunny? buddy? if you're like me, we're running late this morning. a lot of people. well we'll talk about traffic, but we're have to talk about your weather stable. you got a lot to talk about a lot going on. that's for sure. here, a lot of activity coming in a lot of the monsoon moisture coming in tropical activity. now a lot of this is more show than go. but right off the marine coast near bolinas that her first report of any lightning and there it is right there some isolated cells and brief reign lot of locations picking up a tracer suburb boy, there's a lot coming up here so throughout the day, look for cloudy. mostly cloudy, muggy conditions and maybe some not only occasional rain, but the possibility of some lightning here. and also some possible thunderstorms. later in the afternoon. i would think sixties seventies and eighties on your

attempts alright over to sound now. still a bear there in lafayette, or is that better? it's better because they just opened up the lanes a few minutes ago, chp was right as soon as the tow truck got their hook up the cars. they've opened up the lanes. let's go right to highway 24. so the crash was right near the lafayette bart station, and those lanes are open. but you can see as we take the wide shot here how slow it is on 24. it's also slow on 60 80 heading south from about treat boulevard in lafayette just heard word of a new crash on what or newish crash i should say on westbound highway four coming up on the porch, chicago highway. and you can see that traffic is slow coming in from bait point as you go over the conquered, so we'll keep watching that. meanwhile a lot of people have not been making it to the bay bridge. so that means you could take advantage. but i think a lot of people will show up now that the highway 24 crowd is headed that way, 701

let's get back to the headlines this morning. we're learning. two people have died in a massive wildfire burning up in siskiyou county, right here near the oregon boundary. the mckinney fire is one of two major fires burning in our state that would just started friday. already some 80 square miles has burned at this point. that's the biggest fire of the year so far. crews are still very busy fighting the old player oak fire that's right, pointed down there near in mariposa county, not far from yosemite will go back up to that major wildfire near the oregon boundary. the siskiyou county sheriff's department just announced it found two people dead in a car in the driveway there. no word on the victim's identities. at this point, firefighters have no containment on the mckinney fire. crews are up against a number of factors, including extreme heat, erratic winds and lightning strikes that have sparked a number of spot fires. flames continue to threaten rural communities near y rica, and more people are being forced to evacuate in the small community of climate river nearly every home in the town has burned to the ground. i

watched her from my bedroom. i watched everything come it was headed right straight towards our property. many evacuees in their pets have made their way down to the town of weed. a red cross shelter has been set up there at the community center. fire. weather watch is still in effect for that region through tomorrow night. all right, ghazi a time 703. some bay area firefighters already heading north to help battle that fire. the santa rosa fire department tweeted images showing the firefighters will be joining a strike team. also the department called attention to the possibility of thunderstorms here in the bay area. you heard steve paulson and they're advising everyone stay prepared for possible wildfire activity. alameda county. firefighters will also be joining the effort to get the mckinney fire under control. their team has spent the past week in mariposa county , battling the yolk fire. now they're reassigned to join firefighters near the oregon

border department tweeted photos of the team wishing everybody safe. travel crews are able to be reassigned because of all the progress being made on that oak fire in mariposa county near yosemite. that fire started 10 days ago. it's now 67% contained more than 19,000 acres have burned 190 buildings destroyed. many of the evacuees are being allowed to go back home now as crews continue to gain control time at 704 happening today, the monkey pox vaccine clinic in san francisco is reopening ktvu is james torres, right outside san francisco general hospital, and a lot of people are lining up out there. they're expected to ask about. well, can they get those shoes? shots now that they're available again, james that's the big question this morning, dave. good morning to you, hundreds of people stretching the building here this morning outside ss general . we're about a block away from where the front entrance is, and they have a little bit of a break here from where the crosswalk is. but there are

people who say they've been waiting here for hours. others who say they've been waiting for weeks who wanted to come earlier in the last month to try to get this monkey pox vaccine, but then they would only hear that it's run out so they don't have an actual opportunity to come out. but in about an hour s f general will distribute its newest shipment of vaccines. with more than 300 cases of monkeypox reported in san francisco. the city now makes up for about a third of california's total number of infections. the state soon expecting an additional 72,000 vaccines, a chunk of which will come to san francisco because of the county's high case count. doctors say the virus is predominantly infecting lgbt q men, and they still don't have enough vaccines to meet the demand. people here this morning say that consistent long lines are telling. that's how much is important that maxine is like that. post from having that sickness because it's very bad. disease and i hope everybody having that vaccine soon. how important that vaccine is. and

to see the mayor. london breed declared a local public health emergency starting today, but before any additional resources or funding or shifted to help expand the effort against monkeypox, the san francisco board of supervisors first need to meet to discuss the revolution resolution. they have a week to do that state leaders now calling for a state and federal health emergency. as well. the vaccine clinic here in sf general will officially open at eight this morning, a little less than an hour. they will close at noon and will reopen every day this week until that vaccine supply runs out. well at this morning in san francisco. i'm james torres. ktvu fox two news, james. thank you across the bay, oakland police are investigating after two adults and a child were shot near oakland tech high school while pop warner football game was being played there yesterday afternoon. police aren't releasing much information here, except to say all three people who were hurt were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. members of the group faith in action, which is held night walks for peace. they continue to work with the

community to decrease gun violence. we believe that we need to engage those family members. those people we call them influencers. who are able to make the case of them that they really do need to change their lifestyles and the opt for a different option. pastor coming, says the group has helped to reduce the number of homicides in oakland before the pandemic, and it's still active now oakland police asking anyone with information about the shootings to contact them. time is 707, the chp investigating a weekend freeway shooting in san leandro, where two people were hurt. it happened late saturday night, the police rushed northbound interstate 80 near marina boulevard. that's where two people in a white dodge durango were hit by gunfire. they were treated later at a hospital. the chp also later found a green toyota came very it was abandoned along the freeway, and the chp also said it appears that people in both of those cars were shooting at

each other. the investigation continues. and in san francisco , this video from citizen app shows a heavy police and fire presence in the tenderloin. after a shooting. the victim was treated at a hospital and is expected to be okay. police officers searched the area. they found a person matching the suspect's description. that person was detained. there's no word about the motive and the investigation continues. ktvu was learned. the suspect in the deadly dui crash in walnut creek has posted bail. 28 year old brianna day of concord was booked into the martinez detention facility on $300,000 bail after the crash early saturday morning. investigators say she was driving a pickup truck that hit two pedestrians near the intersection of north main street and pine. 27 year old marie carmen leon was killed a friend who was with her suffered major injuries lived in discovery bay worked in walnut creek at kaiser as a flat bottom ist family members have set up a

go fund me account to help with funeral expenses. 71 of the nation's biggest banks, has now been fined $37 million related to fake accounts. the consumer financial protection bureau says u s bank pressured its employees to open fake accounts in their customer's name. to meet sales goals. investigators say employees illegally access customer credit cards and personal information to open those accounts without permission. practice allegedly went on for more than a decade. student loans are costing the federal government a lot more than had been expected. the department of education said direct student loans made during the last quarter century would earn the federal government $114 billion. now the congressional general accountability office says those loans actually cost an estimated 197 billion. g a. o says more than half of that is because of reason loan relief offered to borrowers because of

the age of 88 ktvu is claudine wang in the studio now to talk more about his remarkable career and the deep ties he has to the bay area, right, david garcia, so many people remembering him this morning, bill russell was one of the greatest professional basketball players of all time. he was a star player during the boston celtics dynasty and led the celtics to an incredible 11 nba championships. and he broke

barriers as the first black coach of any major sports in the u. s during the final two championships. however he first gained national attention here in the bay area as a young player. bill russell won two championships at mcclymont high school in oakland as one of the nation's top teenage basketball stars. he then led the usf dance to back to back championships in 1955 and 1956. and that is when bill russell first met a young college student named willie brown. the few black college students that they were at our age. interacted with each other. socially. fraternal organizations. and other kinds of things that young people did in those days. this is a picture of bill russell and warriors superstar steph curry. it was taken after the golden state's nba championship victory in 2015 increase shared that picture on

his instagram, calling russell a trailblazer and an icon. warriors head coach steve kerr says russell was much more than just a basketball legend. he calls russell, a pioneer in the battle for civil rights. during the turbulent years of the 19 sixties. he was an incredible voice in the fight for an equal and just society and during a time where it was very difficult for athletes to speak up. bill russell was fearless. bill russell's family has not yet revealed his cause of death. but they say he did die peacefully with his wife by his side at their longtime home in the seattle area. the russell family is expected to announce plans for his memorial service. sometime this week. garcia claudine wong. thank you, 7 16. now investigators could soon turn to modern technology in hopes of finding new leads in the jonbenet ramsey murder case . it's now been more than 25 years since ramsey, a six year

pretty good rain up in napa county. i mean, for, you know, for august 1st. here you know, july coast was really wet for sausalito had the second wettest july would drizzle, going back to 1950? kevin leave er observer there, but right there was the 11 lightning reported so far, but streaming northward from santa cruz, san jose, santa clarae napa valley and even up into lake county, mendocino county. so hello, august coming in with a lot of cloud cover. it will be muggy, too humid. maybe some brief ring possible thunderstorms. i would think later today when you get some breaks in the clouds, so sixties seventies eighties on the temps , but very muggy, alright over to sound. now i try and listen is a better in lafayette. it's a little better. the lanes are open, steve, but we had a crash. right near the lafayette park station was there for a long time. uh, lanes have been open for a half hour now, but the traffic is still slower than usual driving through and you

can see traffic is going to be just a little bit slow. if you're driving to the bay bridge. we have a little bit more slow traffic now that has shown up it's backed up. still for about five, maybe a 10 minute delay. i wouldn't say that's 10 minutes. it's more along the lines of five, but there's also waiting. at the metering lights. 7 31. let's get right back to the headlines. thank you knew this morning, the siskiyou county sheriff's department confirms two people have died in the area where the massive mckinney fire is burning . it's now the biggest fire in our state, and we're just getting new information into our newsroom that shows how much that fire grew overnight. ktvu erasmus monitoring all these changes you're here with this update. garcia the bikini fire burned 55,000 acres so far, so it grew another 3000 acres just overnight. it is still 0% contained in this morning. we learned at least two people have died in this fire. the bodies of two people were discovered by siskiyou county sheriff's in a vehicle in a driveway in the community of klamath river. that's where the mckinney fire has destroyed. dozens of homes

and structures since it first started on friday. the fire leveled just about every home in town, along with the community center, mobile home park and playground. firefighters from the bay area heading to help fight this fire. these are pictures from alameda county firefighters now on their way to the front lines. cal fires also assigned a strike team with four santa rosa fire fighters and firefighters from napa and sonoma county to fight the mckinney fire. when you look at this the when you look at the fire the size of the mckinney fire and how much it grew in the last couple of days, and you look at really what seems to be the new normal. it's important that resources like these deploy around the state, and that's exactly why we have the california master mutual aid system. firefighters from santa rosa will spend the next two weeks fighting the mckinney fire again. fire activity they're far from overnight. we've learned that this fire group to 55,000 acres and is still 0% contained this morning, garcia and dave will send it back to you. all right, ali. thank you. well the

our time is 7 33. by now, most of us have heard that people who have covid can lose their sense of smell, but before the pandemic that was normally considered a warning about timer's disease. researchers in argentina report some people who couldn't smell anything after recovering from covid may have a greater chance of cognitive decline, no matter how badly they were affected by covid. doctors say that losing the sense of smell can be an indicator of internal changes in the brain. but they couldn't tell either the temporary or permanent loss of smell from covid changes. how the brain works. it is 7 30 for president biden still isolated this morning at the white house after being diagnosed with what's called a rebound case of covid, the president's doctor says he tested positive again yesterday for the second day in a row, his first positive the task came back on july 21st. he immediately started taking paxil a bit. it's an antiviral drug.

a crash. that slow traffic down , but things have improved quite a bit, and that's good news there. babe bridge. small backup there. 8 80 is going to be okay. and we do have traffic on the bridges across the bait, looking all right, and that includes the dumbarton bridge. peninsula has some slowing on northbound 101 in san mateo. oh, two. let's get back to the headlines. this morning. we're learning that two people have died in a massive wildfire burning up in siskiyou county, near the oregon boundary . mckinney fire is one of two major fire burning in our state. it started friday's already burned through 80 square miles. it's the biggest fire of the year. now in california, crews are still also fighting the oak fire down in mariposa county as well back up north now, where the siskiyou county sheriff's department announced this morning, deputies found two people dead in a car in the driveway there, no word on the victim's identities. so far, crews have no containment on the mckinney fire. crews are up against a number of factors, including extreme heat, erratic

winds and lightning strikes that have sparked spot fires in the area. flames continue to threaten rural communities near y rica, and more people are being forced to evacuate in the small community of klamath river , nearly every home in the town has burned to the ground. i watched her from my bedroom. i watched everything come it was headed right straight towards our property. many evacuees and their pets have made their way down to the town of weed, where red cross shelter has been set up at the community center. fire. weather watch is still in effect for the region through tomorrow night. some bay area firefighters are already heading north to help battle that fire. santa rosa fire department tweeted images of the firefighters who are joining us strike team the department also called attention to the possibility of thunderstorms here in the bay area, and officials are urging everyone to stay prepared for any potential wildfire activity. alameda county. firefighters will also be joining the effort to get the mckinney fire under control.

that team has spent the past week in mariposa county, fighting the oak fire, and they've now been reassigned to join cruise near the oregon border. the department tweeted photos of the team wishing everyone safe travels, fire crews are able to be reassigned because of all the progress being made on the oak fire burning near yosemite inn, mariposa county. this one started 10 days ago. it's now 90 . excuse me, 67% containment more than 19,000 acres have burned with 190 buildings destroyed. many of the evacuees at this point are being allowed to go back home as firefighters continue to gain control of the flames. 804 oakland police are investigating after two adults and a child were shot near oakland tech high school pop warner football game was being played there yesterday afternoon . cruise aren't releasing much information here except to say all three people who were hurt were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. members of the group faith in action, which is held night walks for peace say they continue to work with the community. to decrease gun violence. we believe that we

tenderloin area after the shooting. the victim was treated at the hospital and is expected to be okay. police officers searching that area found a person that matched the suspect description. that person was detained. no word yet on any motive, and that investigation is continuing. ktvu was learning . the suspect in a deadly dui crash in walnut creek has posted bail. 28 year old brianna day of concord was booked into the martinez detention facility on $300,000 bail after the crash early saturday morning. investigators say she was driving a pickup truck that hit two pedestrians near the intersection of north main street and pine 27 year old marie carmen leon was killed. a friend who was with her suffered major injuries. leone lived in discovery bay worked in walnut creek at kaiser as a phlebotomist family members have set up a go fund me account to help with funeral expenses. happening now the monkey pox vaccine clinic except francisco general hospital is now open for the first time in nearly a week. ktvu is james torres live there this morning. he is not alone.

people have been lined up. wait and get those shots for hours now and james, are those open doors, doing anything to kind of ease that long line of people. claudine. you know, they opened the doors a little earlier than we expected this morning, so the line has been moving a little bit. we've seen some folks walking forward today. but at this point, if you are not in line this morning, it's almost guaranteed. you will not get a vaccine today. we know san francisco has more than 4000 vaccines to give this week s f general in particular has an allotment of about 2000. and with more than 300 monkeypox cases, monkeypox cases in san francisco, the city combined with los angeles, both make up for more than two thirds of california's total number of infections. the state soon expecting an additional 72,000 vaccines, a chunk of which will go to san francisco because of its high case count. doctors say the virus is predominantly infecting lgbt q men, and they still don't have enough vaccines to meet that demand. there are

higher risk groups. so as you probably know, this epidemic is mostly among men who have sex with men. so we're really trying to get the vaccine out to men who have had multiple sex partners in the last 14 days, sex workers of any gender um people who have had no contact with somebody with monkeypox. is people really focusing on right now? to see the clinic tells us that they're not turning anyone away. but they certainly are prioritizing folks who to give it to major london breed declared a local public health emergency starting today, but before any additional resources for funding are shifted to help expand the effort against monkeypox. the san francisco board of supervisors first need to meet to discuss the resolution that's going to happen next monday, state leaders are calling for a state and federal health emergency as well. the vaccine clinic here in sf general now officially open but again if you're not in line

fans the world are mourning the death of nba legend bill russell. he died yesterday at the age of 88. russell led the boston celtics to an incredible 11 nba championships, and he broke barriers as the first black coach of any major sport in the u. s during the final two championships, but he first gained national attention as a young player here in the bay area. he won two championships. clemens high school in oakland. and russell then led the usf dawns to back to back ncaa championships in 1955 and 1956.

that is when he first met a young college student named willie brown. the few black college students that they were at our age. interacted with each other. socially. fraternal organizations. and other k peopd in those days. warriors head coach steve kerr says bill russell was much more than just a basketball legend. he says russell was also a pioneer in the battle for civil rights during the turbulent 19 sixties. he was an incredible voice in the fight for equal and just society and during a time where it was very difficult for athletes to speak up. bill russell was fearless. russell's family has not yet revealed his cause of death. they are expected to announce plans for his memorial service sometime

thank you. new numbers from cal fire show what is nownight. erae with information about the latest on the mckinney fire alley. mckinney fire burning in northern california, just south of the oregon border, and about 100 miles north of the town of reading. this fire has now burned 55,000 acres. it grew another 3000 acres overnight. it is still 0% contained in this morning, sadly, we've also learned that at least two people have died in this fire. siskiyou sheriff's office confirms they discovered the bodies of two people in a vehicle in the driveway in the community of klamath river. that's where the mckinney fire has already destroyed dozens of homes and structures since it broke out on friday level just about every home in that town, along with the community center. mobile home park and playground now the sheriff's office there yesterday just ordered the evacuation of another 500 homes in the area. firefighters from the bay area are heading up to help fight
