4:32 am
where you can see some of that may kind of drift by overs, but not till tomorrow. but overall, the heat is on for most morning fog. some is there. we had a bigger fog bank yesterday, but we'll see a really ramped up between about six and seven. sunny, hazy and will be hard out there in the back 40. i told you it's going to get out there. livermore one. oh, five. that's hot. the city 75. that's still the eight above average. all right. ali is here and she loves the hot water. wow not really. but you know, i think we have had a really good summer as you mentioned steve, and it's been pretty mild, so we can't have everything. one few warm days here and there isn't going to be the end of the world. so let's talk about traffic. things are pretty calm out here. there's not a whole lot to talk about, as you can see the south bay commute. open highway 20 or excuse me. to 80 in san jose north and south bend. there's just barely any cars out there on the road this morning, things are overall pretty quiet on the san mateo bridge as well for 32. let's go back to the desk. thank
4:33 am
you. ali. health officials across the country are urging everyone to make sure that their vaccinations are up to date. now this comes as an outbreak of polio is being monitored in new york polio, the highly contagious virus that was eradicated more than 40 years ago, was recently found in new york city. wastewater polio can be easily transmitted by someone who may not even show symptoms. dina center fonte of the fox medical news team joins us now. for a closer look at this recent outbreak and the need for people to get vaccinated. good morning, dina. yes good morning, pam. you know, we were like, okay, we're looking at covid. or now we're talking about monkey pox. and now polio. what is going on? but let me put this in context for you just so there's not to panic because it's pretty scary stuff. when we look back in the history books and see what polio used to do to the population, and we know that famously, that was one of the first really effective vaccines. but now they're starting to see it return. but
4:34 am
let me tell you let me break down the numbers for you. so we got one guy right now who has tested positive for polio? now? this is the first us case in 10 years in other countries, there are higher case levels. um, this patient is a 20 year old unvaccinated man. he did suffer paralysis. now he comes from an area in new york, where vaccination rates are low. there are pockets due to religious reasons due to cultural reasons where there is an anti vax sentiment, um which you know we are familiar with after coming through a pandemic. um there is no cure for this paralysis type of polio that this guy has now delays in getting children vaccinated during pandemic that's been a bit of a problem. and then again, this anti vax sentiments. so dina yeah, let me be prevented by immunization. let me break in with that because that is what i what i'm hearing is a big concern, as there are a lot of concerns
4:35 am
about the covid vaccine in particular, people are reluctant to get their children vaccinated and their skipping out on all those childhood immunizations. that have long protected all of us. well yeah, and that's why polio was eradicated. it was gone. it was not. it was not on our minds because for the most part you have to have about 80% you know, we talked about her immunity and you need about 80% of the population to be vaccinated to get rid of this polio, and we had achieved that now. also pam, keep in mind the polio vaccine. it is several shots. it's at two months, four months, six months and then usually there's a booster around 44 to 6 years old. so it does require at least a couple of shots. so those of us who had the polio vaccine as a child or we've already immunized our children. now we have older children. are they covered now? or is there ever a time where you need to get another booster shot? at this point due to that aggressive initial schedule that
4:36 am
our kids were on, and probably we were, too i'm not sure if our parents i'm not sure how much they were looking out for us. but yes, it is believed that you do develop a lifetime immunity once you have been vaccinated against polio, we'll see where this goes as you pinched as you mentioned, it's found in the wastewater in new york because they've been monitoring wastewater for covid. and now it's some other things. and so they're saying, let's take a look at this polio when it's in the wastewater. that's a very non specific way of finding that the virus is there, so now they have to figure out where it's coming from and how to tackle it, especially in these pockets where there is low immunization rates against polio, and one more question before you. we need to go. um how is it transmitted because we know back in history. they closed all the public pools and they're talking about it can be easily transmitted. it and it could be transmitted in a poll is that possible. and how easily is it transmitted? how can you get polio? well i believe, and i
4:37 am
don't want to miss speak on this, but i believe it is spread through those respiratory droplets. um, now and again. it's something that is very specific to this part of new york. so people at home should not be panicking right now about polio. but it is, um, a virus that once again was eradicated at one point, and now they're starting to look at what do we need to do to tackle this to get it under control again? all right, dina center vanni with our fox medical team. thank you so much for that update on that. thanks, pam. we do have an update on the future of san francisco's laguna honda hospital and rehab center. it had been scheduled to close on september 13th, but that timeline has been extended two months through mid november. the facility had lost its federal certification to receive medicare and medicaid payments after failing several inspections now that would force the hospital. to move its 600 patients out and fix the
4:38 am
problems before applying for re certification. nine people who had already been transferred to other facilities died shortly after they were moved. time is 4 37 happening today. santa clara county supervisors due to vote on funding to mental health programs for children of the $2.5 million in funding will come from the state. it's designed to expand mobile crisis services in the south bay, as well as mental health wellness centers and schools. supporters say these centers are really needed because of the isolation , the stress and the fear caused by covid over the past 2.5 years . if this project is approved, most of the services should be available by january. happening today. the santa clara cityo discuss an offer that would resolve legal disputes between the city and the 49ers. another team proposes to help fund several housing and youth programs if the city allows the niners to keep managing levi stadium the 49ers are accused of
4:39 am
mismanaging operations and allowing concerts to go past their scheduled times and curfew . the city share of stadium revenues is also well below projections. time now for 38 will san jose believe it or not, for the first time is celebrating navy week and they have 75 members of the u. s navy taking part ktvu lamonica peters reports. the service members are also taking part in events. around san jose. maybe week is held in up to 15 cities each year. and since 2005 navy week has been celebrated in over 80 different us cities, good stuff , but, you know, just see them and know that they have a talent, a hidden talent. i think it's great. from august 15th to august 21st. you just may see sailors dressed all in white out and about in san jose on monday, one of the bands played
