very dangerous over the next week. san francisco police sergeant is accused of racial profiling sergeant daniel sor lozano is seen here. in plain clothing, taking part in a police operation known as a drug buy and bust. now he tells us here at ktvu off camera that he loves his job. but he's facing potential disciplinary action, which could include termination attorneys representing latino drug dealing suspects accused him of targeting their clients. attorneys say he made dozens of arrests in the tenderloin district in a two year span. all were latino. the attorneys say. he also detained but did not arrest dozens of other people. none of them are latino. solar zana's supporters say this is misleading. like a lot of officers. he's good at what he does, and i'm proud to support him. now a former federal prosecutor who is now a criminal defense attorney speculates that the people who were detained and
6:09 am
not taken into custody were probably drug buyers and police are actually going after the sellers. it's a legitimate issue to bring up. but there are other explanations other than police officers simply wanting to enforce the law in a racially biased way. now solorzano tells ktvu. he did nothing wrong. he says he targets areas, not people, but plaintiff's attorneys are now looking at various records, including police reports to try to uncover any pattern of bias 609 this month a new san jose police academy is graduating cadets, but the police union warrants the city's efforts to deal with staffing shortages may not be enough. now the news site. san jose spotlight reports this graduating class lost 17 out of 37 cadets. the next academy class will start with 28 recruits. that's the smallest amount since 2019. the city and the police union have battled in
6:10 am
recent years over staffing. san jose mayor sam liccardo accused the police union of playing up the staffing problem as part of the negotiating tactic to get a better contract. 609 is the time on this friday before what is expected to be a holiday getaway for a lot of people sell, so i don't know if people are heading in early so they can get off early. how's it look? well, no one's hiding it. i think that people take a four day off pam. four days off. looks at i'll show you. in fact, let's go out and take a look at some of these commutes. it's kind of the richmond bridge. it's definitely lighter than usual and the bay bridge as well. so i think that people will be taking the four day weekend off or at least some people will you can see by looking at the maps. we don't have a lot of slow traffic. i'm kind of looking even at the altamont pass. usually here we have more than that. so i like what i see. but this afternoon, obviously, if you're going anywhere in the car, it's going to be a rough one. so make sure
6:11 am
that you know that and don't get on the freeway to expecting to get to be clear. it won't 6 10. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. another attempt at the first step in its historic mission to the moon. after the break, we're going to speak live to a nasa astronaut who has spent 205 days in space and made some history of her own. and it appears that no problems everything seems to be peaceful between the 49ers quarterbacks trade lands and jimmy garoppolo . now that jimmy g is back with the 49ers we'll let you hear from both tray and jimmy about the coming season, and we're going to keep an eye on this hot weather for you all morning long rosemary oroczo will be back with a look at how long parts of the bay area could see those triple digit tempera
6:12 am
what's the difference between prop 26 and prop 27? 26? not one dime to get people off the streets and into housing 27 generates hundreds of million to help solve homelessness. the choice is clear yes on prop 27. thanks to chase, angie's not sweating this text since there's zero overdraft fees if she overdraws by $50 or less. and, kyle, well, he's keeping calm with another day
6:13 am
to adjust his balance if he overdraws by more than $50. overdraft assist from chase. make more of what's yours. what's the difference between prop 26 and prop 27? 26 is a money grab that doesn't guarantee a cent for non-gaming tribes. 27 requires 15% of all state revenues go to non-gaming tribes. the choice is clear. yes, on 27. welcome back to mornings on two at 6 13 the launch window for the artemis one spacecraft will open again tomorrow morning.
6:14 am
this is the beginning of nasa's return to the moon. monday's large was scrubbed after some technical issues, but now the mission team says it feels good about the launch window opens just after 11 o'clock our time and joining us now live from kennedy space center to talk about all of this is nasa astronaut jessica mirror. jessica good morning. thank you for joining us. good morning. wonderful to speak to you today . well thank you tell us about the preparations that are happening now leading up to tomorrow's attempted launch. there's a lot of action down here at the kennedy space center , and i've been here all week, actually, since the earlier launch attempt, as you mentioned already that one was scrapped for a few technical reasons, but since then the engineers have been out to the pad have addressed the issues and hopefully have all the fixes in place, so we're feeling good about those technical problems that we had. our only thing to contend with, of course, will be the florida weather. it is hurricane season and we're launching in the afternoon, but hopefully that will play in our
6:15 am
favor as well. we'll and things to work through. and of course, the weather that's always playing a part in these launches . what else is important and critical and what you're looking at and determining this launch. yeah this launch is a really big milestone for us. we have been working on the artemis program to return to the moon for years now, and this is really the culmination of it the very first mission and it is the last step the final test flight mission before we put crew members on the very next flight. so right now on artemis one. there are no crew members. so it's that final test to test out all of the systems on the rocket and the spacecraft. the most important one is that heat shield when we come back from space. at a very , very fast paced and come through the atmosphere. we need that heat shield to protect us as astronauts inside the capsule , so we really need to analyze that heat shield data from this mission after we analyze all of the systems and see that
6:16 am
everything is okay to go that next mission will have humans on it. what my astronauts, friends and colleagues will be on that next rocket. so this is a really big step for us, and it's pretty exciting. and for me, i think you hear a lot of younger generation some a lot of people don't believe we really went to the moon. so it's seems like this is an important step to see this happening again. how does this differ from the apollo program? yeah, there are many differences. obviously the technology has significantly advanced. it's been over 50 years since we've been to the moon. so those differences are one of the main ones. and i think another one is just what we look like now here at nasa, but the administration has set the goal of landing the first woman and the first person of color or during these artemus missions. and of course, that was a very different makeup of the crew. and really everybody here and nasa back in that time in the sixties and seventies, so i think the really exciting thing about returning to the moon now is that we are returning together and trying to represent everybody back here on planet earth. well jessica is so
6:17 am
good to talk to you, and it's just you and me talking. you have been to space you made history. you were part of the first all woman spacewalk team tell us what it's like sitting on top of those rockets flying into space and what goes through your mind when you're launching into space. it is an absolutely wonderful feeling, and it's hard to really put it all into words . but i think for me, you know i had been in the simulator so many times before in the soyuz spacecraft in which i launched so i actually had to run mine myself on launch day that the end was going to be different because you have practiced all of these maneuvers so many times. you have all of this muscle memory, and you're doing some very important functions while you're in there. so there i was on launch day going through all the preflight checklist just as i had done so many times before the simulator, and i had to remind myself self that i wasn't going home at the end of the day for dinner, i would end up in space. while when i could hear the engines, krekar a little bit or the rocket move. that's what really
6:18 am
reminded me. okay, this is it. this is real. that must be very exciting. it's always exciting for us to get to see that video and talk to you live up there, and it's so clear and such a different perspective that we have with our technology. now, what are you most excited about with this? for the moon missions . you know, our return to the moon has been a long way in the coming and it is really our next step. we have been having a continuous presence on the international space station for over 20 years now, and that is only in what we call low earth orbit, so that's only about 250 miles above the planet. this next big step in exploration is to return to the moon. the moon is 250,000 miles away. so although we've been there before it is a very big step. we're going there for the spirit of exploration. we're going there. for science. the apollo samples change the way we view our solar system. we're going to unexplored areas with the artemis program, and we're also going there for all of the unanticipated benefits during
6:19 am
the apollo program. we had such an investment of resources in science technology engineering that and that is something that has paid benefits forward for decades now here on earth in sectors entirely outside of space, so there's so much to look forward to with these missions. alright nasa astronaut jessica mere, thank you so much for joining us. we're so excited for all of this and to talk to you this morning. good luck. dust wishes with all of this will be watching. thank you, jessica. thank you very much great being here this morning and hello to everybody in northern california. there you go see mornings onto took you right there with jessica mirror . alright we're gonna take you to south castaneda. he's watching your friday morning commute. hopefully, it's still pretty quiet out there. it is pretty quiet. we're just talking in the newsroom about things that came out of the space program like tang, which is a thing that people don't know about. most people don't know what that is. remember remember, there were also, um, some kind of little like dried snacks and
6:20 am
stuff, right? i was excited to have him in my lunch and other technology like cell phones, but that's not important right now. later yeah. good morning, everyone. let's go out and see what we have. now, with the bay bridge commute. we don't have a lot going on. you might notice that that i haven't been saying a lot and that's good. today is the friday before holiday weekend and a lot of people tend to try and take the day off and make it a four day weekend that can't blame you. just remember it's going to be a crowded afternoon getting out of san francisco and getting out of the livermore valley getting out of the leo heading out towards sacramento. these weekends tend to be kind of tough south bend commute. the same thing goes 6 80 is going to be pretty crowded, trying to get out of san jose and heading up toward the sun, all great and beyond. 6 20. let's bring rosemary in with today's weather. yes. hello sal . happy friday to you and happy holiday weekend to all of you. hopefully you get a nice stretch of off time. we are looking at a little bit of fog to join us
