wildfires, including the fire burning in riverside county. cruz dealing with unbearable conditions, intense flames and temperatures reaching 110 degrees or higher. and i understand we're going to hit. i think almost every city in the bay area is going to be more than 100 degrees as well today along the coast, which rosemary and i were talking about this before going on the air this morning. i mean place isn't like mill valley and sausalito and san francisco and no air conditioning and it's going to be hot. absolutely today is going to be just as hot pam and dave good morning to both of you, if not a little bit hotter. temperatures are expected to peak today. and with that the national weather service has upgraded. the advisory made it a little bit more widespread. this is excessive heat warning was for our inland cities north bay east by south bay. now it does include our basic communities as well as the peninsula. so this is new yesterday. we didn't have this in place, and it will go until thursday. meanwhile that

county had the most with more than 5000 homes and businesses without electricity as you say. in that red triangle. now let's look at the map right now. the orange square shows between 505,000 pg need customers near santa rosa and livermore with no power the green dot and the yellow diamonds indicate between a few dozen to a few 100 customers with no power now today, the demand for power in california is expected to hear the 20 year high. pg and e is teaming up with the state power grid to urge everybody to keep conserving electricity during this record breaking heat waves . we all need to dramatically increase our efforts to conserve energy today or faces a real threat of rolling blackouts. so did say that we've done a very good job reducing energy usage. however they have to say about 2 to 3 times more conservation to prevent rotating outages. now

the huge demand for electricity is severely straining pg and e equipment, causing unplanned power outages. pg and e. says about 40,000 bay area home to businesses lost power yesterday evening mainly in the south and east bay. throughout the bay area, the main cause of averages that we're seeing as transformer failure because these components are not able to cool down overnight. pg and e crews are working around the clock, replacing down power lines and repairing damaged transformers. some school districts are taking extra steps to keep students and staff safe during the heat wave that includes the nevado school district, which will put some of its schools on minimum day so students can be sent home early all this week. those schools are loose. sutton elementary, novato high school and the hill education center. all other nevada schools will follow their individual heat plans, which can mean counseling, outdoor athletic practices and games and holding pe classes indoors.

contra costa county office of education has a color coded chart that limits outdoor physical activity based on the highest temperatures that includes limiting outdoor practices and pe classes when temperatures are higher than 95 degrees, and canceling all sports activity when it's hotter than 105 degrees. there's a new warning from first responders during this heat wave after oakland firefighters rushed to save a baby who was accidentally locked inside a hot car over the weekend. ktvu evan sernoffsky has the details. we had a very good outcome. which isn't always the case. when you know, minutes do count and whether like this temperatures hit the mid nineties sunday and east oakland mother realized she accidentally locked her keys and six month old baby in her car. she quickly called 911 and truck number seven out of station 20 was on the scene in minutes on a day when we're having 95 degree

temperatures, it was those minutes were very critical and having a safe outcome for the child. thankfully, the child was unscathed. but it's situations like these that act as an important reminder of the dangers of leaving kids in hot cars. part of the issue with with with kids is that that their their body heat up much faster than in adults. they don't know. eliza meteorology professor at san jose state and has been tracking deaths of kids in hot cars for two decades. he keeps track on the website, no heat stroke .org and said as an average of 38 kids die that way every year. and even when it's relatively cool out, noel says temperatures inside vehicles can be in the triple digits in the 1st 10 minutes after a car is shut it shut they the air temperature. inside the car rises 19 degrees, so let's say it's a day like it was yesterday at oakland about 90 degrees, so after just 10 minutes, it's 100

and nine degrees inside that car. as for that baby in oakland, firefighters say it's happy to be back with mom. staying cool. the child didn't even miss a beat right to mom's arms. just just fine. knowles says that in 20% of the cases where kids die in hot cars, they were left there knowingly by their parents who ran in to do an errand or something like that. now experts say. in those cases where kids are accidentally left in the car, parents should leave a cellphone or a purse or something they know they're going to need in oakland, evan sernoffsky ktvu fox two news, devon, what a story time 407. some of the hottest bay area temperatures are in the south bay and we met a man who's dealing with it by looking at the heat in a different way. we lived in new york so we're used to the heat but the humidity and heat so this is a little bit doable bearable compared to new york city, where it's 100 degrees and humid. it's not humid. it's dry

install air conditioners, depending on fans to keep customers and employees call on those really hot days this morning, firefighters in contra costa county are working to fully contain a grass fire. the franklin fire started shortly after six o'clock last night on franklin canyon road south of highway four between crockett and martinez. the fire burned an estimated 125 acres and sent smoke out across a large area crews were able to keep the flames away from nearby homes. firefighters in southern california say two people have been killed in a fast moving brush fire in riverside county. the fairview fire started yesterday afternoon near the city of hemet that we received this video and these photos short just a few hours ago that fire has now grown to more than 2000 acres due to strong winds there in riverside county. honey. triple digit temperatures . the fire has destroyed at least seven homes and other buildings and forced the evacuation of more than 1500

convicted of kidnapping and aggravated robbery. the victim did survived that attack. governor newsom has signed a landmark legislation that will lead to new changes for california's fast food industry . the governor says the new law will empower and protect workers at fast food restaurants across the state. it establishes a first in the nation 10 member fast food council that will set statewide standards for wages, hours and other working conditions. giving them more voice, giving them more choice. cranium new council and i'm proud on labor day to sign that bill and the shrine it in law. the council is composed of representatives from labor as well as employers. union leaders say the new law is a big victory for fast food workers. 550,000 fast food workers, a seat at the table and the power to develop solutions to low pay, health safety training and more.

not been planned. the power company says the lights were out in an estimated 40,000 homes and businesses in the bay area yesterday evening, mostly in the south and east bay. ktvu s james torres will have a live update in the power concerns in california coming up at the top of the hour time now for 34. by late this morning, temperatures are expected to be more than 100 degrees again in the inland areas of the east bed, livermore hit a record setting 116 degrees yesterday, so families were out looking for ways to stay cool, but they also were aware of the flex alert. we talked to people who decided the best solution was to go to lizzie's fountain in downtown livermore. it's ridiculous. it's ridiculous when we were going to go out today was like i don't want to leave a little kiddie pool that we've put them in earlier and then we just decided to come downtown and let them run amok in the fountain. now across the east bay. local officials open cooling centers at libraries and

community centers, while many parks and open spaces were shut down because of the fire danger, walnut creek's heather farm was open and very popular. one family told us they plan for the weather by setting up a canopy, renting a snow cone machine and giving the kids water toy. plenty of water. plenty ice. i haven't tried waking up a fan over there. ah where the bag ice in front of it turned on high to try to get some of that cool is off of that bag. ice heat. it is bothersome, but pakistan just to be around my family. yeah many told us they were happy. it was a holiday so they could get out of the house and cool off. some that may be harder today. with many people going back to work. we're going to school today. the marine county sheriff's office is urging people to be respectful of homeowners who live near stinson beach. they're telling people to pay attention

california could become the first state to rank it's heatwaves. right now there's no ranking, no naming system for heat waves like there are for hurricanes, tornadoes and wildfires. but that may change soon. a bill is now on the governor's desk that would require the states environmental protection agency to create a system to rank the severity of heat events. now if the governor signs it that right king system would be put in place by the year 2025 74 year old woman says she is scared and angry after she was robbed near her oakland home. she's sharing her story with us this morning, hoping it will raise awareness about these dangerous confrontations. amberleigh has the story. i love this area. i mean, rockridge just is just a small business mecca. mary, who asked us not to show her face was attacked and robbed just steps from her rockridge home around 1 30 saturday afternoon, the 74 year old tells me she was walking

home after doing some shopping when someone came up behind her , threw me into the bushes essential over here. yeah which kind of broke my fall and i started screaming. i started fighting. i tried to scratch him. i tried to punch him. but then a second man came up. at that point. they sliced through the strap of my purse because i felt the tension release on that purse. this is video shot by a neighbor of the suspect vehicle , a silver honda accord. it captured a glimpse of one of the thieves getting into the car. mary says both men were red hoodies and black mask. she describes them as being young 19 to 25 years old here again, help and screaming, and i just ran down the stairs and then i see my neighbor you know, like pilled with, you know leaves, thefts and break ins have become all too common. it doesn't surprise me because we've had people break in. my place like a

the east bay are consistently seeing the temperatures soar past 100 degrees. statewide flex alerts continue to ask people to conserve energy in the late afternoon, but when the heat carries into the native becomes a problem for power companies like pg any because people are using their air conditioner, and it's not really allowing electric components to call down especially transformers, which are the main cause of failure during his heat events, they usually cool down overnight, but with these lingering high temperatures goingthese late hours, it's causing some of the transformer components to fail. and that's when we see these savages. the state's power grid expects power demand today to be the highest in california history. pg and e. says it continues to work to restore all power outages and even prepare for potential rolling blackouts . later today, callous so did report enough energy conserved on monday to avoid any of those planned power outages but still suggests homeowners need to do

physical activity based on the highest temperatures that includes limiting outdoor practices in p e classes when temperatures are higher than 95 degrees, and canceling all sports activity when it's hotter than 105 degrees. well there's a new warning from first responders during this heat wave after oakland firefighters rushed to save a baby who was accidentally locked inside a hot car over the weekend. ktvu evan sernoffsky has the details. we had a very good outcome. which isn't always the case. when you know, minutes do count and whether like this temperatures hit the mid nineties sunday and east oakland mother realized she accidentally locked her keys and six month old baby in her car. she quickly called 911 and truck number seven out of station 20 was on the scene in minutes on a day when we're having 95 degree temperatures, it was those minutes were very critical and having a safe outcome for the child. thankfully the child was

outages, the store can't open until eight o'clock this morning . that's part of the story. with this record heat. another day of triple digits will put our state's grid system and a local utilities. there were another day's worth of challenges. monday night, pgd reported more than 40,000 bay area customers without power, and those aren't just homeowners. power outages affected gas stations and stoplights as well. we noticed that bites back from all the way over to lafayette kind of happy valley road and then all the way up until taylor boulevard out. statewide the department of water resources activated its temporary emergency power generator for the first time that gave the state the ability to provide an additional 120 megawatts of power. they say that's enough to power about 120,000 homes. palaces says today's demand for power well, that's still considered normal for the day, though, if you look at some of the numbers that demand for power is still higher today than it was at this time yesterday. and callous, so still asking you at home to conserve

energy and power wherever you can at home as we continue to experience some of this record heat for pretty much the remainder of the week. reporting live this morning. i'm james torres. ktvu fox two news, james. thank you time now. 604 some former state officials are criticizing the manager of the state power grid, saying there are ways to prevent energy shortfalls, utilities and grid operators all over the nation are dealing with a hot summer heatwave, but we're not blacking out anybody in arizona or nevada or even in l, a dwp. why because those power grid operators make sure that they have enough power under contract from power plants that are running to serve their customers. the esso is exacerbating the problem by allowing exports out of california at times of high demand. the former president of the state's public utilities commission says well, it's good to conserve energy regulators have to put the people of california first during rolling

half day schedules today and for the rest of the week. now one of those schools is loose setting elementary, which is right here behind us, but we have a list of the other two. they include nevado high school. as well as hill education center. lucid and elementary students will start their day at 8 40 this morning like usual, but they will be dismissed at 12 45 instead of the usual dismissal time of three o'clock in the afternoon. the district is shortening the school day at these three schools because of the heat, they are also implementing their heat plan for all other schools in their district. that heat plan means changes like ltd. recess activities or recess indoors. pe classes may be held indoors or possibly rescheduled , and athletic activities and practices may be canceled district wide yesterday temperatures in novato peaked at around 108 degrees just before four o'clock in the afternoon. we are expecting similar high temperatures here again today, and we don't know why just these three schools loose at an elementary nevado high school
