5:30 am
going to tell you how police were able to arrest him when he thought he was in the clear and the biden ministrations, mobilizing emergency response teams as tropical storm ian moves out toward the atlantic. we have more on the damage and the effort to help the state recover. from ktvu. fox two news . this is mornings on two. good morning. thank you for waking up with us here on morning sun, too. i'm pam cook. good morning. i'm dave clark. thursday morning . september 29th steve paulson's back, comparing our weather in the bay area with the storm and florida. no comparison. there's nothing going on here. very little just got saw a tweet. from cape canaveral on all the towers there all the rocket tower launches that, you know, maybe they move them back into the hangers, but about 50 to 65 mile per hour wind and heavy rain being reported. so still some really there could be some coming in, or some of those bands over the atlantic feeds off the warm gulf stream could produce a very heavy rain, but
5:31 am
it's tropical storm could maybe get to back to category one as it goes out over the atlantic. but it looks like it's heading up towards jacksonville, and then we'll make landfall again late sometime tomorrow. south carolina coast for us, there's just not much going on here. and so we have a maybe a little cooler one or two days and then a little warmer the next two days. that's what we're in. right now. it's a little warmer, not much. maybe only people in weather will notice it. but we are looking for sixties seventies and eighties on those attempts, alright over to sal now and we made it through the first hour and a half. okay what about 5 31? still looking pretty good, steve. i don't see a lot going on. which is good. if you're going to be taking the car over the conquered from bay point. there is some slow traffic, though we're going to start there. you can see traffic here is moving along slowly. it's of short slowdown, but it's beginning. to get longer and longer as the minutes where on here and you get to the richmond bridge. still a light delay here at the toll plaza and at the bay bridge. we don't have a big delay right now. yet 5 31, let's go back to the headlines. all
5:32 am
right. thank you, sal. we do begin with disturbing news this morning about what is now tropical storm in just a short time ago, the sheriff of lee county, florida, appeared on good morning america and said, quote. i don't have confirmed numbers. i definitely no fatalities are in the hundreds. there are thousands of people waiting to be rescued again that coming from the sheriff now more than 2.5 million people are also without power. across florida. electrical crews have been on standby, but it will likely take weeks before power is completely restored. take a look at some of the video, though ian's wins were devastating, they're currently much lower about 65 mph, but it was 150 mile per hour winds when that storm slams southwest florida, tying the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the u. s the storm wiped out buildings, it's causing catastrophic flooding. ultimately we're hoping not to find any kind of casualties or any kind of devastation. but we
5:33 am
know that's probably not gonna be the case. so we know that we're ready. we're ready to help out in any way that we can now ian is forecast to head out to the atlantic ocean today, but then turn and strike the states of georgia and the carolinas as well as virginia later today, pn will go to the headquarters of fema in washington to get updates on the relief efforts. the president just signed a disaster declaration for florida , providing federal funding for storm victims, including grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low cost loans for property law. awesome the president's also worried about the impact of this big storm on gas prices that while the storm is disrupting offshore oil production in the gulf president biden. warren's oil companies and businesses don't take advantage of the situation. do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices are gradually american people, americans watching the industry should do the right thing. now
5:34 am
the oil industry responded, saying market forces determine gas prices, not oil companies, the national average for a gallon of unleaded gas is up a dime compared to last week. cuba is now beginning the recovery process from the destruction caused by ian that storm knocked out the island's entire electrical system. work crews are beginning to restore power, but havana and the western edge of cuba remains in a blackout. 55 shelters are now open for evacuees as the storm destroyed homes, businesses and heavily damaged the tobacco farms crippling cuba's famous cigar industry. you can find an interrupted coverage of hurricane now. tropical storm ian on the fox weather app. just use your phone to scan that qr code on your screen or you can go to fox weather .com. alright time is 5 34 san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins now says she will consider charging drug traffickers with murder if they can be linked to a drug overdose death. ktvu
5:35 am
sally rasmus tells us that the district attorneys and other counties are already taking that approach. good morning, alan. good morning, dave. yeah, this is all in response to the fentanyl overdose crisis. it's really happening across the country. but here in california , very pronounced, according to state health, health department , a numbers fentanyl killed about 6000 people in california last year. now san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says her office may consider charging drug dealers in some cases with second degree murder in a tweet, jenkins said, quote we have to send a strong message in the community and in the courtroom that we will not stand by and allow dealers to kill innocent people, especially our children. we must do everything in our power to hold dealers accountable to help. now in order to do this in court, a prosecutor has to show that the dealer or the person who provided the deadly drug knowingly committed a dangerous act with conscious disregard for the victim's life. it's similar to the way prosecutors can convict a repeat drunk driver with murder or involuntary
5:36 am
manslaughter, but the move is controversial among some who say this is really a repeat of some of the tough on crime drug policies of the eighties and nineties. and when it comes to addiction, tougher sentences aren't always a deterrent. in the past couple of years, district attorneys and other counties have tried this like sonoma and plaster counties. they did end up charging drug suppliers with manslaughter and murder in the cases of some high profile overdose, so it's been done before. question is san francisco could be next? dave and pam back to you? thank you. ali, the man who police was looking for during a standoff in pleasant hill has been arrested . please tell us 26 year old joseph ramos have conquered was arrested after hiding in the ceiling of a nordstrom rack store. he was wanted in pittsburgh for rape, domestic violence innovating police in a stolen car. please say surveillance video, show him changing clothes and climbing into a crawl space in the store ceiling. when he was caught wednesday morning, he was wearing tactical gear and a stolen sweater. that's crazy.
5:37 am
well, i'm really glad they got him. i hope that you know whatever it is that he had going on that he gets. you know the justice that he deserves. ramos was turned back over to pittsburgh police to face charges pittsburgh police nor nordstrom's corporate office had immediately respond to requests for comments. fremont police have caught up with a man they say went on a vandalism spree, cutting comcast fiber cables. it happened at least four times over the past month near south grimmer and mission street in fremont. investigators believe the man in custody may also be linked to other high profile crimes. now 5 37, a bipartisan group of us senators introduced new legislation to improve oversight and transparency in the federal bureau of prisons. this follows with associated press reports that exposed systemic correct option in the federal prison system. the bill would require the justice department to create a group to

5:39 am
it's expected to go out to the atlantic ocean. later this afternoon and then turn back. and head to georgia and the carolinas tomorrow. now we have seen some incredible pictures of all the destruction caused by ian. look at this guest at the hotel recorded video of the hotel swimming pool before and after the storm surge storm is in sanibel, florida and the airport. myers and it's where ian made landfall as a category four gauge. just look at that. wow picture, pam. just incredible, just completely covered by water. nothing you can do. yeah well this morning we are standing by for a live briefing from florida's governor . rhonda santa's. we're gonna bring you that. as soon as that comes in first we want to check in with steve paulson. i know you're keeping an eye on the storm the power that it it's still holds. as it moves across

florida. i am what you guys just covered it, though. tropical storm so it is on the cape canaveral atlantic side here heading up towards jacksonville , but it may briefly and increase in strength a little bit, but it looks like it'll make landfall again. tomorrow on the south carolina coast. we just don't have a heck of a lot going on out here, that's for sure. a lot of high clouds. weak system dragged across, but it looks like today we're on the drier side on the back side is that system moves out 59 the water temp, san francisco, but we all sixties down towards monterey 57 58 a day of a point raised in point, arena sixties seventies and eighties on the temps. here we are looking forward. patchy father is not a lot. there's just a little bit out there cool to mild lows, mostly sunny, it'll be a little bit warmer. a couple degrees here. sandra fell. menlo park, livermore san jose bumped up a teeny bit there 80 to 80 85 80 degrees. fifties on the temp san francisco sitting at 57. the average loan now this time of year is 55 so slightly above 51

a workers at sfo are set to strike for 1/4 straight day. workers at the airports, bars, restaurants, cafes and lounges have all been on strike all week . nearly all of those businesses are now closed. workers say they aren't paid enough to live in the bay area and often have to work multiple jobs. the union says they have not heard from the council that represents the restaurants and food outlets in the airport. all right, as we're speaking right now, governor rhonda santis of florida is holding a news conference about the storm. let's listen in southwest florida the rescue missions on the barrier islan ss of the morning. we have florida
5:54 am
guard assets on the ground participating. in efforts and we have our use our teams who, uh, they got there. even the winds were going, they wanted to get in there. get on the ground across alligator alley, and they are performing rescue efforts again, starting with those barrier islands, but also looking at the places that had the most inland flooding and these operations are ongoing. in total. there's 28 large, mostly chin nooks and blackhawks helicopters between the national guard and coast guard that are already performing these active rescue missions, and there will be more asahara's sets brought in as the day goes on. we've also been working with hospitals overnight who've been on generator power. we're in the process of evacuating to healthcare facilities to safer locations north we also surging more medical personnel into the area. as of six a.m. this morning that we have 2.2 million
5:55 am
reported power outages ah, out, but outside of southwest florida , we may have additional outages from central and northeast florida impacts and people should anticipate that if you look, there's 1.5 million outages and seven southwest florida counties, lee and charlotte are basically off the grid at this of a million without power. hillsborough 222,000. pinellas 150,000 manatee 129,000, the charlotte and lee. ah reconnects are really going to likely have to be rebuilding of that infrastructure. and so there are alignment. there are crews that are on their way down right now , but that's going to be more than just connecting a power line back to back to a pole. the other counties likely are not going to require the extent of the structural rebuild. but of course, that's going to be
5:56 am
assessed as the day goes on, but we do have huge amounts of resources. that are in route. and are going to work to get people's power on as quickly as possible. we've also had interruptions in communications as a result of the storm, particularly in southwest florida. we have 100 portable cell towers being deployed into the area. um and what those would be put up once it's a full fully safe to do so. f dot is on the ground, working on making sure that the roads and interstates are open. alligator alley on 75 across into call your and in the lee county is open people. traffic is flowing . i 75 south through charlotte county is open and flowing. portions of leake county. they're still looking at as you know some of those areas. cape coral city of fort myers. they got really, really inundated and really devastated by this storm . so the hope is that all of 75

will be open, but most of it is open and it gives us what we need to be able to continue to move supplies. into the area. we have 100 engineers on site to do bridge inspections, and they work in teams of two as they assess the damage and they can ensure safety. then bridges can be safely reopen. now of course , we do have reports of structural damages to bridges such as the bridge going on to santa bell island, and i anticipate there will likely be other bridges that that have suffered damage. what once bridges are inspected and determined to be safe, they will be be a reopened is as soon as possible. but we know santa bell causeway and we also know pine island bridge. those two are not passable, and they are going to require structural rebuilds. right now, if you look in central florida, you're looking at potential major flooding and orange and seminole counties, st
5:58 am
john's river all the way up potentially into into northeast florida and jacksonville, the amount of water that's been rising and will likely continue to rise today, even as the storm is passing is basically a 500 year flood of that, and i know seminole county has has has done evacuations. i know they've issued open shelters, but we're going to see a lot of images about the destruction that was done in southwest florida, and obviously we have massive assets there. but people should just understand this. this storm is having broad impacts across the state and some of the flooding, you're going to see an areas hundreds of miles. from where this made landfall are going to set records. and that's gonna obviously be be things that that will need to be responded to. we have course, massive amounts of food and water in the area. we're gonna have probably close to 300 truckloads of food and water in the area today.
5:59 am
fortunately most of our school districts will be able to reopen on friday or monday. uh, you know, lee county is in a very difficult situation, charlotte, so we're going to work with them and see when they can get back on their feet. but the damage there has been just so extensive that it's a very difficult situation. we have received a major disaster declaration for nine counties. but we do expect more. i just spoke with the president this morning. he offered support. i told them that thanks for this, but because the storm has moved inland and caused a lot of potential damage in the center, part of our state that we are going to be asking for those counties to be expanded and included there, but for now, we have approval for charlotte collier de soto hardy, hillsborough, lee manatee. penelope's been listening live to florida governor rhonda santa's talking about the extensive damage after hurricane ian. now tropical storm mostly talking about two million or more people without power, maybe more in central florida.

infrastructure that needs to be built and rebuilt, including power getting power back to people. engineers are out inspecting roads and bridges and medical response teams, he said , mentioning they are out looking for people who might need help as well. communications have been interrupted, so giving us an update on the damage left behind. we're going to continue to follow that. throughout morning sun 2000. people relax when there's an active shooter in there and your kids, your nephew, your cousin. somebody is in there. six people in oakland injured shooting on a school campus. we have the latest on the families and the community members who are very angry and demanding change, plus or houses that are underwater to their pinnacle. so we're going to see a lot of that just heard it massive flooding in florida starting the recovery process after being hit by hurricane ian what we now know about the extent of the damage so far.
6:01 am
from ktvu. fox two news this morning's onto well, good morning to you and thank you for joining us. welcome the mornings onto i'm dave clark. good morning. i'm pam cook thursday morning. september 29th we check in with steve paulson. steve you often mentioned these kinds of things as the governor of florida just mentioned record setting flooding 500 year event. i always get nervous when i hear that. because then you know, two years later, we see it again. i just get nervous when i hear that, but yes, on the gulf side . there's a lot of coming in here of record flooding so far, and the system is not done yet. it's on the atlantic side now, right over cape canaveral, actually, cocoa beach daytona beaches had 12 inches of rain. orlando's at about 14. and there's still some pretty good gus about 65 mph saw video coming in out of jacksonville, so it'll move north and then move in on the carolina coast. probably tomorrow. just not a lot going on for us. very little
6:02 am
fog as well. we saw big fog back monday tuesday. it's been decreasing every day. so only patchy fog. mostly sunny, little bit warmer, but really, temperatures are pretty close to where they should be. inland temps are bumping up slightly. all right over to sound. now it's six. so one east bay bridge . what the east bay with steve, we do have some slowing on the altamont pass a lot of slowing there on 5 80 coming in from the central valley kind of a robust slowdown. once you make it into livermore, it looks pretty good . southbank commute has not been affected by a lot of slow traffic just yet. but we are getting some more slowing at the bay bridge toll plaza that is backing up beyond the parking lot now 602. let's get back to the headlines. all right. thank you, sal as we've been talking about hurricane ian, now a tropical storm a day after it made landfall, officials are now working to confirm whether the storm is responsible for any deaths. ktvu is james torres joins us now this morning to show us the latest damage and james talk about the worrisome statement. we heard coming from
6:03 am
a florida sheriff. lots of talk about this morning. good morning to you. new video keeps coming from all over the state of florida. the storm now has made its way across the central part of the state overnight and now hovers over the space coast. right around the northeast part of the state. i want to take you live out over to jacksonville, florida the distance. you're supposed to see the acosta bridge right over here by the cloud cover is kind of preventing a little bit of that. you can see how shaky this camera is all because of that wind it's tropical for tropical storm force winds right now. it's still enough to cause a little bit of damage. now we're learning from the lee county sheriff down in the fourth myers area. fatalities are confirmed exactly how many is still yet to be determined, sheriff carmine marcelino originally told good morning america he knew of a death toll in the hundreds, but has since backtracked that statement and said he doesn't actually have an exact number and his rescue crews are just scratching the surface to learn exactly how much devastation the storm left behind. we just heard from governor to santis. that the coast guard is also conducting rescues as well.
6:04 am
powers still knocked out for about two million people, in some cases that's literally cruise in tampa, had to remove a fallen stop light from the street, and that's a result of the 100 plus mile an hour winds which damaged a sign down in cape coral as well storm surge elevating water levels in rivers and canals right in the backyard of neighborhoods. we spoke to a man from discovery bay who just moved to the fort myers area. he and his family say they rode out the storm. the wife and i have never been through a hurricane. um been too big earthquakes in california. but this is kind of a different thing, right? you don't know an earthquake's coming. you know, this is comment, so you do have a little bit of tension build up before it all happened. emergency crews in florida say more than 10,000 crews are on standby to help restore power throughout the state that you just heard from governor to santa's. places like charlotte and lee county are practically off the grid at this point, so whatever way to get their power to get back on the
6:05 am
grid is going involved just a complete restructure of that power grid rather than just a simple re connection. in is now passing over parts of cape canaveral right where the artemis one launch was supposed to happen this week, and while it is a tropical storm, officials warned parts of north and central florida could still experience hurricane force winds while the eye of the storm still hovers over the state, pam all right. thank you, james, and it is going to take days before rescue teams determine all of the damage caused by the massive storm. take a look at this this morning. we are getting our first look at the only bridge leading to santa bell island. now you can see the road leading to the bridge covered in sand and debris. part of the bridge has collapsed into the gulf. thousands of people typically live on that island. no word yet on how many people evacuated or perhaps stayed behind, but they were under mandatory evacuation warnings. time lapse video from a traffic camera shows just how wild the conditions were out on
6:06 am
santa bell island. take a look at this. in addition to the strong winds, it only took about 30 minutes for the storm surge to completely cover that road. sanibel island near fort myers, just about where the eye of the storm hit with the bridge damaged by the storm. here. there's a photos of video of that pool being covered as well by an hotel. the island, though completely cut off from the mainland. at this point, just amazing time is six. oh six flight to cancel today between the bay area and both orlando, florida and tampa, florida six canceled flights to orlando to canceled flights to tampa. the airport. in those cities are closed today. officials hope to reopen them tomorrow at the earliest, while some travelers boarded the last flights before the airport shut down, many are stuck. they can't go home and the passengers were taken by bus to shelters. kind of sucks, because planet we only planned for so many days were a little
6:07 am
bit low on diapers and stuff like that. but we've got enough for now. hopefully we've got food that we stockpile when we stayed at the hotel because, you know when you come out of budget, and then you exceed that budget kind of hard to keep going. now these airports have shut down, but they did activate emergency operations tied down all the jet bridges. they covered up ticket counters, and they're in constant contact with emergency managers about how to move forward now, while evacuation orders were issued for parts of florida's west coast, some pretty brave reporters and photographers stayed behind to cover this major story. now this video shows a reporter from the weather channel. he was clipped by a tree that blew past him. he tried to keep standing, but he was knocked down, holding onto a traffic pole to prop himself up , but the strong winds also knocked down a stop sign. now you can find uninterrupted storm coverage of the storm called in on the fox weather app. just use
6:08 am
your phone. you can scan the q r code you see on your screen here or you can go to fox weather .com. back here in the bay area . classes are canceled at oakland's king estate campus today after six people were shot there wednesday afternoon. so far, no arrests have been made. in this case. ktvu is amanda quintana live in oakland, now, with the updates on the police investigation and the condition of the victims, amanda in total , six people were shot, all of them adults, with some kind of affiliation to the campus, which is a cluster of four schools there in east oakland, now spokesman for highland hospital said that three of those victims ended up at highland hospital and three others were taken to other local hospitals. authorities said two of the victims sustained life threatening injuries and one had non life threatening injuries. yesterday they said one victim had already been released from the hospital. little two others were pending release, but authorities have not provided an

i'm karen. i'm living with hiv and i'm on cabenuva. for adults who are undetectable, cabenuva is the only complete, long-acting hiv treatment you can get every other month. it's two injections from a healthcare provider. i really like the flexibility. and for me, it's one less thing to think about while traveling. don't receive cabenuva if you're allergic to its ingredients or if you taking certain medicines, which may interact with cabenuva. serious side effects include allergic reactions post-injection reactions, liver problems, and depression. if you have a rash and other allergic reaction symptoms, stop cabenuva and get medical help right away. tell your doctor if you have liver problems or mental health concerns, and if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering pregnancy. some of the most common side effects include injection-site reactions, fever, and tiredness. if you switch to cabenuva, attend all treatment appointments. ready to treat your hiv in a different way? ask your doctor about every-other-month cabenuva. with every-other-month cabenuva, i'm good to go.

russia, ukraine, the united states and western allies have all called the referendums a sham. and today, european leaders say they will never recognize that move and that the four regions remain ukrainian territory. an investigation. is underway after leaks were detected in two gas pipelines under the baltic sea video, released by the swedish coast guard shows what's happening at the water surface in the aftermath, the pipelines nord stream one and two run natural gas from russia to germany. the cause of the leak is unknown, but scientists say underwater explosions happened before the leaks. fairly sizable blast and so close to this area where the leak is occurring, which was, of course, very interesting. the european union is accusing russia of sabotage, but the russian government denies any involvement. neither pipeline was in use, but they were filled with gas that has been bubbling to the surface of the baltic sea since monday. back here in the

bay area, san francisco added. 1400 previously unreported cases of covid-19 since the beginning of september to its covid-19 dashboard now a statement on the dashboard says a processing error by the california department of public health affected the accuracy of the city's numbers, the statement says the error was identified in the numbers have been corrected. time is now 6 15 now that what used to be hurricane the in has become a tropical storm. the recovery efforts in florida are beginning but it will be a law. long process with huge amounts of flooding all over the state, and some rescues already being reported in areas that were really hard hit by the storm. reporter lauren blanchard rode out the storm right outside of tampa. you're with us now in st pete beach, florida, and it's good to see you, lauren, what's the latest there? well david, this place was preparing for a worst case scenario. thank lee. it seems to have been spared the worst of this storm. but that is
6:16 am
not the case when you move farther south, near fort myers, naples. we just heard from the florida governor ron dos santos , he said. at this point, there are hundreds of search is underway. they have about 30 helicopters searching for people, he said, is essentially lee county and charlotte county are off the grid at this point, because power is out. cell phone towers are down they've actually deployed about 100 mobile. cell phone towers at this point just to try and get service back up in the area because there are a lot of folks that obviously can't get in touch with their loved ones in those areas because cell phones are down, power is out. water is out. really all of the necessities are gone for so many people, so this is going to be our huge cleanup. um and then you know, that's even further down the line. first. they've got to figure out where all these people are. if they're okay, help those who are hurt. if there are any so, dave, this story taking a little bit of a darker turn this morning down
6:17 am
there in the lee county in charlotte county, and we're hoping, obviously, as those crews in those first responders get in there. that they've got some good news, but it's a it's a pretty tough time. lauren before you go, i just want to ask you directly. what was it like for you to go through that storm? yeah. thankfully dave, we really didn't get the worst of it, which was for our safety. really good thing. it was very, very windy here. it was quite loud throughout the evening. we haven't had power since last night. a lot of times fire alarms would start triggering, but thankfully, this area spared the worst. we really haven't seen that much damage. there's some polls that are down some power lines that are down, but this is not been the worst one here that i have gone through. but again when you go farther south, the teams that we have down there have really gone through a terrible hurricane. i mean, nearly a category five
6:18 am
just two miles an hour off of that very strong category four. that is just something you don't want to be in, and unfortunately there are a lot of people down there who did find themselves in the middle of it. our reporter lauren blanchard from st pete beach in florida. lauren thank you. alright that leads us to steve has the update following it as well. atlantic side now right over cape canaveral, actually, uh, daytona beach has had just about 70 miles an hour . orlando's had almost 14 inches of rain. so while it's tropical storm now and winds about 65 mph , there's some stronger guys. daytona beach has had a foot of rain. it might briefly go out into the atlantic. it's expected , though, to stay at tropical storm strength of it does reach category one doesn't look like it'll last long and then we'll move in now. jacksonville all the winds are really kicking up there looks like it'll move in on the south carolina coast. tomorrow's way it's looking right now. while everything is in florida right now and heading up into the carolinas over the
6:19 am
next 24 hours, so we are just incredibly quiet here. that system drew drew. you know some higher clouds passing by, but it went into the pacific northwest . so we got the tail end of that . but that's going through mount diablo has gone from 59 to 68 to 67 now back to 59. i don't know they're gremlins up there that mandela i don't know. maybe something's going on there. most locations in the higher elevations are in the fifties 64 to 86 on the temps. patchy fog bar far less coverage on the fog than we've seen the last couple of days. we had a huge fog bank on tuesday. now it's really not much left 82 today for santa fell menlo park at 80 livermore to 85 san jose up 1 to 80 in a nice pattern for inland areas will focus on conquered here. going back to sunday. 86 monday was 84 tuesday. 80 yesterday 84 forecast high today 85. that's pretty nice for this time of year. 66 57 for the city. what's average 71 55. the average load did go down in the last 24 hours. 93 the record high 1988
6:20 am
49 way back in 19 oh 66 56 now for sunset fifties on your temps will end up with sixties seventies and eighties alright over to south now get an update on the traffic. what's going on out there so well, it's getting busier and we do have a problem in the hayward area south dont 8 80 i want to show you that at highway 92 we have a lane blockage there and now we do have some slowing coming in through san leandro from 2 38 until you get past highway 92 elsewhere right nearby, the same mateo bridge looks pretty good heading out to the peninsula, which is not really affected by a lot of slow traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza. we do have a bigger backup. now that's building how we force also a little bit slow coming in from bay point to conquer it. 86 20. let's get back to the desk. all right. thank you, sal. it has been two weeks since a driver slammed into a castro valley trader joe's. now we're hearing from the father and son who are hit by that car inside the store. and in case you missed it. it was a historic moment in

drug crimes in san francisco. san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins says her office may start charging drug dealers in some cases with second degree murder if the drug they supplied led to an overdose death, jenkins suggested this approach in a couple of tweets last night, one of them reads. but we will not allow drug dealers to kill innocent people and those suffering from addiction. my office has begun admonishing suspected dealers in open court to warn them that any death attributed to any drug they sold a result in a murder charge now admonishing that's a legal term. doing that to a suspected drug dealer in court is a legal step prosecutors have to take before they can convince a jury. that a dealer knowingly committed a dangerous act with conscious disregard for the victim's life. so you have to make that case before you can introduce a second degree murder charge. it's similar to the way prosecutors can convict a repeat drunk driver with murder or involuntary manslaughter. but this approach is controversial. critics say it's a repeat of some of the tough on crime drug

policies of the eighties and nineties. and that tougher sentences aren't always a deterrent when it comes to dealing with the problem of addiction in the past couple of years, district attorneys and other counties like sonoma and plaster counties have charged drug suppliers with manslaughter and murder in the case of some high profile overdose deaths, so it's illegal approach that's been done before and now it looks like san francisco prosecutors may start using it as well. david pam back to you. all right. thank you, alan. 6 38 is the time back over to south, keeping an eye on the commute. what should we know? well, thanks for getting busier as well. but you might expect at this time of the morning, david pam at the bay bridge. we do have a backup, which is not unusual for it to be there. let's just show it to you. now you can see that traffic is going to be slow. san mateo bridge. this commute here is not all that slow as you drive through now. 8 80 south. that's a different matter. i want to go right to it here because sat bong 8 80. as you come up towards highway 92. they were

6:49 am
well. getting into the center of the storm was the only way for the national hurricane center to get very important information like the wind speed and the specific location of the in got rocked like to say like a boxer. the aircraft was basically overmatched at one point we were back to power. trying to gain speed. we're basically diving losing there. it was a mess. cook stir. would you do it? no i know. you know. at one point, the turbulence was so bad. that plane dropped 1200 ft in seconds. i don't like a little bit of turbulence on a commercial airplane. yeah i am not a fan of that neither. i don't feel good flying over. uh colorado, sometimes in the rockies. yeah, bumpy so now but well, incredible. alright let's check in with sal, where the commute hopefully is not bumpy. two ft on the ground right here, pam. there you go. hmm good
