start. 321 booster ignition. and lift off of artemus one. we rise together back to the moon and beyond. the launch happened at 10 47. pm local time, sending the 32 story rocket off to space from the kennedy space center on a three week test journey. this was the first moon launch since the apollo moon mission over 50 years ago. i spoke with nasa astronaut jessica mirror this morning about the significance of today's launch. and what comes next. so if all goes well on this mission will be ready to launch astronauts on artemis to hopefully in just over two years from now, and those astronauts will include the first woman and first person of color to me that just makes it all so much more special because it means that we are going together, really trying to represent all or at least more of humanity than we did the first time when we went

to the moon. so i think it's just incredibly exciting to show how far we've come and that we are doing this not just for nasa, not just for ourselves but truly for all of humanity to explore together. here in silicon valley teams of scientists and engineers at ames have spent years working on the artemus one program and were instrumental in the development of the spacecraft. qi. contributions include developing the orion capsules, heat shield and thermal tiles and ensuring the spacecraft can safely transport astronauts and cargo to learn lunar orbit. and back to earth. this is a lot different than 50 years ago at the apollo mission, the artemis the technology is cutting edge so much more advanced. and because of that, the nasa engineers and researchers and eventually astronauts will be able to explore previously unexplored regions of the moon reporting live at the nasa ames research center. emma goss, ktvu fox two news. all right. thank

you, emma and an estimated 15,000 people headed to the area near kennedy space center to watch the launch. some of them said the chance to watch a nighttime launch made it even more exciting, several members of the british royal navy set up camp along the beach and treated the lift off like a sporting event, ordering in pizza from a nearby restaurant. but they also told us this was a chance to watch history being made. it's a lifetime opportunity and seeing something like this kind of size and scale always is very good. i mean, this pittsburgh has been over 12 years to get this to this point and then 58 of anniversary since apollo, so it's a big moment. others were there to watch the launch, but also turned the event into a business. some entrepreneurs created and sold t shirts and pins to commemorate the first moon mission in 50 years time now, 705. it's now been more than a week since the midterm elections, and some key bay area races are still too close to call and an alameda county there's a new leader in the race for district attorney. new boat

guilty to federal charges. the only time that david cpap spoke in court was when he told the judge his name his lawyer, not guilty pleas to charges of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and attacking a family member of a federal officer. if he's convicted on both charges could get up to 50 years in federal prison. he also faces charges of attempted murder in san francisco superior court. a preliminary hearing in that case is set for next month , and he's due back in federal court on november. 30th. and the man suspected of stalking women in san francisco is due back in court november 29th after a judge threw out almost half of the charges against him. 34 year old bill hobbs was arrested last month on 22 counts, including sexual battery and assault. prosecutors accused him of chasing touching and kissing women he saw on the streets. the judge said there was

insufficient evidence is the court throughout nine charges, but allowed one charge of felony false imprisonment and 12 misdemeanors to remain the trash collection company ecology is paying $25 million to settle a dispute with the city of san francisco city leaders claim ecology made much larger profits than they were allowed to under the contract with the city. the city says this payment will help offset rate increases for operational costs. the $25 million is in addition to the $95 million ecology refunded to settle a separate dispute. palisades tahoe, california's largest ski resort, opens on friday received about three ft of fresh snow. already the resort plans to open both its lower and upper mountains for skiing, snowboarding, even tubing, snow making machines are on 24 hours a day to make the conditions even better. is just a stunning view. our our snow making crews are working day and night to get the rest of the mountain open. and actually

shopping season getting underway. a lot of people are concerned about actually receiving the packages they order, a new survey shows. more than one third of americans have had a package stolen from their doorstep. single family homes get hit by porch pirates most often over condominiums, townhouses and duplexes. if someone tries to steal something, there's a high possibility that a neighbor or two or five is going to see them in action and they're going to shout and this person is probably going to drop it and run away. now there are several steps you should take, including package tracking security cameras, doorbell cameras timed deliveries or requiring a signature pick up boxes or lockers are also an effective way of making sure you're the

district so you can feel safe parking your car while you shop. oakland city officials are concerned about the frequency of fires at homeless camps in the city. a new report highlights the fire department responded to more than 800 homeless camp fires over the last year, on average, that's more than two per day. they estimate the cost to battle those fires more than $1 million. some council members are blaming caltrans for their lack of site maintenance. the caltrans properties are in a state of risky lack of maintenance every day all the time. tell trends you are hereby put on notice that your properties are in a dangerous condition. and you have been negligent in failing to clean them. caltrans told ktvu. it needs more time to review the report to respond appropriately . the issue will be discussed at the next city council meeting. san francisco is pushed to get housing for more people during the pandemic has helped more people get off the streets this

parked car right next to that construction site here behind us at roosevelt. this happened around 3 20 in the afternoon. gunfire erupted, sending people walking by scrambling for cover. power came from redwood city police. a woman called 911 from a cell phone. and while she wasn't able to tell dispatchers what was going on, the dispatchers could hear children screaming in the background. and since that she was in distress, so police arrived to check and they found a man with a handgun inside a car with that woman and three young children, ages 14 and 10, police say when they tried to negotiate with the man, he got out, held up his weapon and use the children as a shield. one witness who didn't want to be on camera described the commotion before that shooting. i heard, uh some loud yelling and screaming, so i stepped out and then i heard a couple of gunshots. you know, that's what was most alarming got out of the car with the

firearm. several shots were fired by officers that were at the scene from different locations that it's surrounded that car. the children involved were not hurt. the man shot by. police later died at the hospital. the woman who is accused of threatening was not shot, but treated for other non life threatening injuries. it's not clear what the relationship was between them. but redwood city police chief says a total of five officers fired their weapons. the man who was shot and killed that we don't know his identity, just that he was 36 years old and lived in redwood city and the police chief here in melbourne city last night, said that this man was known to police had prior contact with law enforcement. before this incident, the same mateo county district attorney's office is investigating the shooting and what happened in redwood city police also called in representatives from the california department of justice to oversee that investigation. live in redwood city, erasmus ktvu. thank you time. 7 34.

we're following breaking news right now. this is in southern california, the city of whittier and suv slammed into a group of los angeles county sheriff's recruits who were out for a morning run. it happened about an hour ago. our sister station in los angeles says as many as 15 recruits were hurt. 11 are in critical condition. the driver of that suv has been detained. we don't know what led to this. we're keeping an eye on this again. this is in southern california in the city of whittier, several sheriffs recruits were hit by an suv. these are live pictures you're looking at, and we're tracking this. we're going to find out what we can find out the conditions. look at what's strewn on the roads there. those recruits were hurt. some in critical condition will bring you more information from southern calif. oranje in the whittier area as soon as we get it in back here in the bay area. there are several new developments this morning about a widening text message scandal

within the berkeley police department. the city council is postponing a vote to confirm its interim chief to permanent chief ktvu crime reporter henry lee learned late last night that the president of the berkeley police association sergeant darren catholic, is leaving the position for now, amid allegations that he knew about arrest quotas and made racially derogatory comments. no justice, no peace. take it to the streets. calle students were among a group of protesters demanding reforms within the police department. the city is launching an investigation into claims made by former officer corey shadow d you know, he leaked text messages from 2019, which he says came from catholics such as asking for 19 more arrests by friday and discussing the heritage of the people they just arrested. it's just really clear that cops in berkeley cannot be trusted. oakland er his own police department has been under

federal monitoring for 19 years due to specifically to racial profiling. ah it really struck me as a similar cultural problem. interim police chief jennifer lewis says it in no time during her tenure. she was made aware about the allegations until they went public a few days ago. the city council last night followed the recommendations of berkeley's police accountability board and delayed her confirmation, which was scheduled for last night. now the police union issued a statement just a short time ago supporting an investigation into the allegations. it reads quote. the public's trust in our police officers and the pursuit of justice is paramount. these messages undermine trust and confidence discrimination has no place in modern police work time now. 7 37 para educators in santa clara county say staffing shortages make them vulnerable to violent attacks in classrooms , held a rally yesterday. they also filed a complaint with the state occupational health and safety administration. power

educators say staff shortages leaves them vulnerable to violent physical attacks by the special needs students they served. a lot of what i'm seeing happen can be prevented if we had adequate adequate staffing. i had to choose between leaving a student alone by themselves when i seen emergencies happening outside of the classroom and supporting my teammates and protecting other students, the union that represents the para educators in santa clara county, said this rally was to inform the public about the problem and they have not ruled out going on strike. academic workers at the university of california continue their strike for a third day, demanding better pay and working conditions. despite some progress in negotiations between the union and uc system , there has been no word of any compromise on key items such as pay and child care subsidies. i'm here because i want to teach . i love to teach. that's what i want to do with my life, so i

officer shot and killed a man yesterday who they say held a woman and two young children at gunpoint. the busy intersection of el camino real and lincoln avenue ktvu. sally responses in redwood city with the latest information on this case, ali andre what was startling to people who were just walking buyers of this all happened in the middle of the afternoon around 3 20 on el camino real behind us here in redwood city and lincoln avenue. so this all happened in a car that was parked right in front of that construction site. you see here behind us redwood city police say this started as a domestic violence incident. they believe in a man threatening a woman and her three kids. all of that led to gunfire. cell phone video showed the commotion shortly afterwards. luckily no bystanders were hurt as people walking by ran for cover. police say this began when a woman called 911 from a cell phone. in her car at el camino real. she wasn't able to tell dispatchers

what was going on. but the 911 dispatchers could hear children screaming in the background. they sent police to do a check. police said. when they arrived, they found a man with a handgun inside that car with the woman and three kids ages, 14 and 10, police say when they tried to negotiate with the man, he held up his weapon and use the children as a shield. the man got out of the car with the firearm. several shots were fired by officers that were at the scene from different locations that it's surrounded that car. we had a crisis negotiation team member on scene it was attempting to negotiate with the man prior to the gunshots being fired. the children were not hurt. the man shot by. police later died at the hospital. the woman he's accused of threatening was not shot but treated for other non life threatening injuries. it's not clear what the relationship was between them. redwood city police chief says a total of five officers fired their weapons they are all on paid
