conclave, where cardinals will elect a new pope. they're setting up the chimney with pipes, and the world will be watching for white smoke to signal the new pope's selection. the same sign seen in 2013, when pope francis was chosen. >> so as the world continues to mourn the passing of pope francis and prepares for the upcoming papal conclave, president trump is under fire for posting an ai generated photo of himself as the pope. this is the photo posted on his own truth social account and the white house account on friday night. the post has drawn sharp criticism from u.s. catholic bishops, the vatican and even some of trump's fellow republicans. with more on the week in politics. we welcome in saint mary's political science professor corey cook. great to have you, corey. thank you. thank you. well, tell me, what's the endgame? 53 million catholics here in the united states, over a billion worldwide, i guess. why why would he do this?
7:47 am
>> i mean, i think, again, this this president has shown an interest in just getting attention for the sake of getting attention. that's always been his mantra, that there's no such thing as bad press. obviously, a lot of catholics around the country are offended. we're obviously not going to have a thrice married pope, right? so it's patently absurd. but what we're seeing is the president's poll numbers are starting to plummet, right? he has the worst poll numbers at 100 days of any president in the last 80 years. but he's playing to his base. and the base loves this. >> the base loves this, right. >> and again, this is where the president is right now is playing to his base. and so he posts on social. he gets a bunch of attention from it. and a lot of the country, again is just sort of outraged by the actions of their president. >> in the midst of mourning, to which. >> again, it's awful timing. >> taste. yeah. terror for gdp numbers came out and we're beginning to slow down a little bit. gross domestic product came out this week down 0.3%. and president trump said with the tariffs there's going to be some bumps in the road before we get
7:48 am
a reset. and there has been, you know, people talking about the r word recession. but president trump brushes that off and says, no, no, no, we're not going there. my question is how does he keep his base happy. because they're feeling the heat as well. and how do you keep the gop in line? because i'm sure some of the republicans are saying, wait a minute. >> well, so you've got a mixed bag of economic news, right? so on the one hand, gdp is down. on the other hand, jobs actually the jobs report is pretty good right? 107. consumer confidence is down which is a which is a big indicator. the effects of tariffs are just coming into effect. now. the president has been sort of brushing off the effects of folks in terms of what was coming in the holiday season, that already manufacturing is going to slow down in terms of the ability to access goods and services in the u.s. so obviously the, the mixed bag is not great news for the president. it's certainly not good news for a lot of republicans who voted for him. and that's what we're seeing in the in the polling, is that his numbers are really low on economic issues and immigration,
7:49 am
which are the two issues that got him elected. so clearly he's struggling now, again, to maintain support of a majority of the population. >> his big, beautiful bill, his budget proposal that cuts billions of dollars out of just about everything. does that have a prayer of passing? >> well, so this is what i think this is. the big news of the week is what's going on with this, with this piece of legislation. so the process of reconciliation allows you to create a number of policy changes in line with a single bill that can't be filibustered. so the republicans have tried to package everything together border security, permanent tax cuts, a lot of cuts across government to pay for it because it has to be budget neutral into one single bill. what we're seeing over the last week is a lot of cracks within the republican coalition, because the one big beautiful bill, frankly, doesn't does a lot of harm, right. so republicans are very concerned in red states about the loss of medicaid dollars and rolling back medicaid expansion. there's concern in red states, which disproportionately benefit from funding for the department of education. there's concern about, again, the proposed cuts in in in health in, in in the

arts. right. so the hatchet job that they've taken to the federal government is actually now getting a lot of backlash within the republicans in congress. >> let's talk trade a little bit. china said we'll come back to the negotiating table if and only if you take the tariff off completely, which is, i think, 145%, 45%. i'm curious. i know china's got to be feeling it too, right. who blinks first? >> well, again, a lot of analysts will tell you that, frankly, china's in a better position in terms of trade than the united states. again, it's you know, we've seen this president blink a few times already. and so it's not difficult to imagine him taking a step back again, declaring victory, certainly, but taking a step back from this. but again, this on again off again with the tariffs. it's hard to know how serious to take the president in terms of his argument that he's actually going to see this all the way through. >> what's it like teaching political science right now? >> you know, it's fascinating. our students are very, very
