>> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> several fire agencies jumped on this one. and fast. good evening everyone. i'm heather holmes. it was quite the scare for people in fairfield today. as you take a look at these aerial pictures, you can see the flames inching toward their homes. the fire broke out just before five this evening. we received an update just about an hour ago. some good news. firefighters have stopped forward progress, and that evacuation order for this area has now been lifted. let's get straight to this developing story and our zac sos, who is live for us tonight in fairfield and zach, i imagine many people, they're relieved tonight. >> very relieved to give you a sense of just how close this firefight came to area. area homes over my shoulder. you can probably make out the fire retardant blanketed area roofs, cars, the flames. fortunately not making it to these structures. but they did come close, as you mentioned, forward progress on this fire stopped just after six at some 62 acres.

take a look at this video. earlier winds dry brush helping to feed these flames in fairfield, prompting an evacuation order for several neighborhoods off of hills road. a number of area departments joining cal crews in fighting cal fire crews in fighting this, both from the air with a tanker and a chopper, and on the ground with dozers and hand crews. i did speak with one neighbor a short while ago, who says she was initially thinking the worst. as this fire made its way down the hillside, she began spraying down her home. >> we packed everything up. just all the flashback of actually our friends in la who lost their homes, literally lost their homes, and you just never think it's going to happen. it's going to come over your way. so it just taught us a lesson on, like we've been saying, we need to kind of pack things and know a go bag. and so it just really let us know what we need to be ready for.

>> and thankfully, her home, okay, to our knowledge, no structures damaged during this fire. certainly there will be some cleanup from this fire retardant, but all of this could have certainly ended far worse. crews expected to remain here for the next few hours to work on hotspots. heather. >> yeah, great job by all those fire crews tonight. zach, are you going to stay on top of it and bring us the latest coming up tonight at ten? appreciate it zach. well, meantime, the bay area is under an air quality advisory both today and tomorrow, all due to wildfire smoke from the massive wildfires in canada. the fires in alberta, saskatchewan and manitoba provinces causing some hazy skies here. as we take a live look now at the bay bridge, you can see a little bit of that haze hanging in the distance over san francisco with more on the conditions, especially there in fairfield, we want to bring in our chief meteorologist, mark tamayo. mark. >> hi there. heather. yeah. when you think about this area out towards solano county, we had temperatures close to 100

degrees on friday and into saturday. so all that grass kind of pretreated with all that heat and ready to burn. you can think of when you factor the winds as well. we have those winds out of the southwest really a big challenge for fire crews. so here's a closer look where that fire is burning. as you can pick out vista grande and also the capitola way here right around this intersection. and some of that inner open space. current temperature 72 degrees. these are observations from travis air force base. winds gusting to 33 miles an hour. so still it is windy for this portion of the area. and relative humidity that's coming up there right around 50%. so the winds will continue to be somewhat of a factor, at least in the short term, for this evening. over the next few hours as we check out the forecast. in fact, here it is in solano county for the fairfield area. still breezy to windy. right on through tonight into early tomorrow morning. now temperatures today a bit warmer compared to yesterday. no major heat though. temperatures from the 60s to the 70s and the warmest locations in the 80s for today. really no big changes in our forecast. as you can see for

the coast. some fog in the morning, becoming partly sunny into the afternoon hours. inland areas, more sunshine, temperatures on track to reach the low to mid 80s. so we have some cloud cover this morning, but some clearing this afternoon. as far as the wind reports right now it's breezy to windy out there. there's a fairfield sustained out of the southwest at 24 oakland, a westerly breeze at 16 miles an hour out toward sfo, westerly winds at 14 and san jose winds gusting to over 20 miles an hour. but clear skies. a beautiful sunset here showing up from our south bay. camera and current numbers santa rosa 65, concord 67 oakland right now checking in 62. overnight temperatures starting out the day in the 40s and the 50 so partly cloudy skies. some areas of fog out there, especially near the coast and right around parts of the bay. and then we'll increase the sunshine just like today. but we could have some leftover patchy cloud cover near parts of the shoreline tomorrow afternoon, so it's kind of a mild to warm setup. this area of low pressure could produce some showers down in southern california, but this will keep our temperatures from soaring.

so it looks like we're kind of in that comfortable range from the mid 60s in san francisco to 72 in vallejo, concord, 82 degrees. and here's a look ahead. your five day and day to day. these are all just some minor changes headed our way. a little bit of a drop off in those numbers by thursday, and then we could warm things up a little bit by saturday and into sunday. so no major heat, no major cooldowns, just kind of a cruise control forecast as we head toward the weekend. >> yeah, finally a little bit of consistency mark. thank you. okay. back now to that fire in fairfield. it comes as fire season officially begins in santa rosa. that means starting this month, santa rosa fire will start annual weed abatement inspections of residential properties in the city, vacant lots, and developed properties with at least a half acre of unimproved land. owners are required to cut grass and weeds to a height of no more than four inches. and earlier today on the four, i spoke with paul lowenthal. he's division chief fire marshal of the santa rosa fire department. and he says our wet weather that we had earlier

this year has led to a lot of growth that needs to be addressed, and that homeowners understand the importance of being prepared and reducing the risk. >> the benefits of what's happened here, meaning a lot of bad with all the fire activity that we've had, not only here in santa rosa, but across sonoma county with the tubbs nuns, glass, kincade, walbridge, myers, the list goes on and on. but from all that devastation came a lot of good. i would imagine before 2017, it was really difficult to bring a lot of properties into compliance and get them to understand the risks. but as a community as a whole, we're seeing a much a much greater participation with not only being prepared but also making properties, wildfire ready properties safe. >> chief lowenthal added that most property owners cooperate and clean up, creating that defensible space around their homes. okay, now to another developing story that we are monitoring tonight. and several lanes of the richmond-san rafael bridge. they remain closed right

now. this is all for emergency repair work. now, this may look like a still image of the backup, but this is actually a live picture. you can see the cars just barely, barely inching along here. want to show you now what the backup look like from above? as skyfox flew over the bridge. this was at commute hours just after 5:00 today, you can see drivers heading to the east bay from marin county. not too different from what we saw there just a few minutes ago live. caltrans says the closure is all due to emergency repairs. we need to take a look here. caltrans posting that picture showing concrete on the upper deck starting to crumble. the work is meant to end traffic in both directions. that work meant that traffic in both directions was restricted. we heard from one driver who actually pulled over at the toll plaza, says. the delays added more than an hour to his commute. >> about an hour and 20 minutes. so it's, you know, it's quite a bit. i usually it takes me an

hour to get home to santa rosa. now it's going to be like a three hour delay. so we just got to bear with it. >> okay, maybe not one hour, but three hours. as he mentioned, caltrans expects the repair work to run through about 9:00 tonight. but as we near that deadline, drivers may still see some delays. as of about half an hour ago, caltrans says two eastbound lanes are now open. the third lane, though, remains closed for monitoring. one westbound lane remains closed. crews say the repairs should be ready in time for the morning commute again. they're hoping to have it wrapped up by nine. tonight. we'll be monitoring this backup along the richmond san rafael bridge, and we'll check back in throughout the show. we'll have a full report for you coming up tonight at ten. by the way, this is a really good time to download the fox local app to get the most up to date information. all right. a major milestone for several young adults in oakland. coming up, the program that is the fo s of

meaningful lives, including continuing their education at community college. so joining me now live to talk about the student success and to learn more about the young adult program is doctor nathan felling, the coordinator and counselor for student accessibility services at laney college. nice to have you here. nathan. and david cammarata, the director of the young adult program. david, nice to have you here as well. nathan, i want to start with you. graduation day. boy, this must have been so special. >> it was super special being able to say these young students names and have them walk across the stage was just an amazing experience. and being able to see their faces and their parents faces, because that was something that we know they were probably not going to be able to do if we had not set up these types of programs. yeah, and it was a great experience. >> and, david, 15 young people, i mean, this is your largest group yet. >> it is. yes. we've we've appreciated a long relationship with laney and the peralta

colleges, but the certificates our students were able to earn this year is really, really a big deal. >> yeah. nathan, these students, i want people at home to know they worked for these certificates. they earned them. talk with us about the experience that they had at laney college. >> so they go through three different art classes. they must sculpt something. they must draw something. they must get creative and bring out that creativeness to earn it. and that was something that we have really good art instructors at laney. and these students met those requirements and earned those certificates. >> yeah. and, david, why is a program like this so important? what does it help these young people to do? >> well, in our young adult program, we really work to help our young people learn the skills to be the responsible, independent and meaningful members of their community. and it's important that we all know that individuals with intellectual and developmental developmental disabilities really can make their own choices, be who they want to be, and participate in their life as they see fit. >> and david, you know, in order

to help them do just that, you don't just partner with laney college. i mean, there are many other agencies. explain the other partnerships that you have. >> oh, we have so many. we also had two students walk the stage at merritt college. we have students participating in work experiences through our partnerships with the regional center of the east bay and the department of rehabilitation, and many of our local businesses. safeway usd is a really good work experience partner. we just really try to help our students develop the skills to be as independent as possible. >> and nathan, what do you hear you mentioned about seeing the smiles on the students faces and their parents, but what do you hear from both the students and the parents about this program? >> they were, you know, so ecstatic. these parents kept thanking me profusely when it really was their their own child that did it, but it was the fact that they were given that opportunity. and these the students, you know, pulled us in for pictures, both myself as

well as david and the parents pulled us in for these pictures as well. so it was one of those things that the experience for them, you could just see it with their their energy from the beginning. you know, it was one of the pictures that was shown. and as the current pictures right there, where at the end they were very excited about what they were experiencing. >> yeah. because david, for some of them, this idea of going to college seemed out of reach. >> well. >> absolutely impossible. >> many of our families, many of our students for a long time have been told college isn't for you, career isn't for you. living independently isn't for you. and this partnership really helps to show that our young people are very capable, they can be very successful, and they can again make their own choices and do what they see fit with their life. >> yeah, and really integrate in the community. david, really quickly i mentioned 15 largest group yet. how do you keep this momentum going? >> oh, this is just the start. we have a world of ideas moving towards possible aa tracks for young adults. we're really

trying to get into career technical education and just kind of keep pushing this so that students can continue their education while they're in usd and then as they exit. >> and finally, for you, nathan, and that partnership with laney college, i imagine it's going to it's going to continue. >> well, that was the thing six years ago. we sat down for a cup of coffee and figured out, how can we do better for the community. we want to make this a true community college, not just a college in the community. and with that, we're keeping that drive going, finding out departments that want to really support the students and really want to make a difference for the community of oakland and for the students special needs. >> well, we certainly appreciate what you're doing for our communities. nathan and david, thank you. and please tell all 15 of those students that we here at channel two congratulate. >> them. >> for what they were able to do. and great to see those smiles. thank you so much for sharing this program. all right. we have a lot more coming up here on the news at 730.

crash on geary boulevard in san francisco is renewing calls tonight for safer streets in the city. a 67 year old pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver yesterday at geary boulevard and second avenue. it is the second senior pedestrian death on geary this year and the eighth citywide. the advocacy group walk sf says the city's vision zero traffic safety policy52 days ago, with no replacement in place. they're urging the mayor to take action before more people are killed. now to oakland, where a 7-eleven convenience store just can't catch a break. it was once

again hit by thieves, and just twice in one day. our krystal bailey went to the neighborhood where some people feel helpless and wonder when the thieves will stop. >> the 7-eleven on grand avenue in oakland hit by thieves again twice in the same day. >> it's a common occurrence around here, and it's getting to be kind of bad. >> oakland police says the first incident happened around 845 sunday morning. police say multiple suspects, possibly armed with a gun, walked in and demanded cash from the register, taking off in a car waiting outside. in the second hit, just after four in the afternoon, police say two people, possibly armed with a knife, came in, took cash and ran off. the owner did not respond to our request for comment, but the store clerk tells me $1,000 was stolen along with, quote, all the ice cream. neighbors know it's a hot spot for break ins. the windows are still boarded up from the last smash-and-grab. >> i think it gets hit harder than some other spots. >> and back in april, when the same shop was broken into twice
