the potential that this team and the city has to offer. >> the roots next game is set for the saturday in el paso, texas. all right. that's going to do it for sports. the 11:00 news with mike starts now. >> next at 11. a close call in solano county as a grass fire burns right up to a neighborhood in fairfield. plus crumbling concrete on the upper deck of the richmond-san rafael bridge brings traffic to a near standstill on 580 and 101 for hours. the latest on the repairs. and in east bay, 7-eleven targeted not once but twice in the same day. how neighborhood businesses are responding to the crime. >> the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. >> and good evening, everyone. i'm mike mibach. fast moving flames came within yards of several houses in fairfield, prompting neighbors to evacuate and firefighters to go on the attack, both on the ground and in the air. ktvu zac sos has the story. >> you can see the red flames.

>> those flames making their way down the hillside near julie darling's home in fairfield monday afternoon. it was just after 330. she was on the phone with her son. >> and he says, mom, don't look at the fire. just go. and then next thing we know, we were asked to evacuate. >> crews from fairfield fire and surrounding agencies rushing to the area near hillborn road. >> cal fire came as well. their resources were instrumental in containing this fire and making sure that no houses were lost. >> tankers and a helicopter fighting the fire from the sky while on the ground. hand crews and dozers work to stop its spread, but conditions not making their work easy. >> this wind is moving pretty good and you can feel it still going. >> sarah, who lives in the area, says she applied lessons learned from the la fires. >> you just never think it's going to happen. it's going to come over your way. so it just taught us a lesson on, like we've been saying, we need to kind of pack things and no go

back. >> a number of neighbors, including herself, also began spraying down their homes. >> and i just watered everything. everything down the fences, down anything. wood, furniture, you know, outside furniture, trees. >> the aggressive efforts of firefighters paying off three hours later with forward progress stopped on the fire evacuated residents soon able to return to their homes. >> i'm so proud of our first responders, everything that they could possibly do to save our homes. >> and again, no damage to any structures during this fire. still, crews expected to be here through the night checking for hotspots in fairfield, zac sos, ktvu fox two news. >> officials in santa rosa are declaring the start for fire season for the city. fire officials say they will begin their weed abatement inspections of residential properties across the city as vegetation continues to grow and dry out. as we get into those summer months. >> infections will start. and

it's basically to make sure that the properties are in compliance, bringing those weeds down to at least four inches in height. and really, the idea is to bring those properties into compliance and help make our wildland urban interface a safer place. this this season. >> cal fire says this is also the time when they start to add seasonal firefighters to their stations to make sure they inspect every home. firefighters in oakland also pretty busy today battling a brush fire. this was right near interstate 880. officials say the fire started along the railroad tracks and then spread into some nearby backyards on 35th and 36th avenues. no homes were damaged. firefighters also responded to a separate rv fire at third and adeline, which sent heavy smoke into the air and briefly threatened a commercial building. and as we move deeper into fire season. be sure to download our free fox local app to get breaking news updates right to your smart device. new at 11, we are learning more about a fire that happened earlier this evening at a strip mall. this happened in the city of fremont near paseo padre

parkway and deep creek road. some of the businesses in that strip mall are damaged. utility crews right now on scene, working to restore power. no one was hurt, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. and let's give you a live look right now out at the richmond san rafael bridge. traffic finally flowing smoothly once again after an hours long backup in both directions, following some concerns with the integrity of the upper deck. at last check, caltrans says all westbound lanes have reopened. as we again give you this live picture of the traffic headed that direction over to marin county. two eastbound lanes are also open. the third lane remains closed for monitoring. that's not what the bridge looked like, though. hours ago, drivers were stuck in traffic all afternoon and into the evening commute and beyond. this is what it looked like from sky fox, where drivers were heading to the east bay from marin county. caltrans says the closure was due to the emergency repairs they needed to do, and they posted this photo here

showing the concrete on the upper deck that it started to crumble, causing traffic to be restricted in both directions. one driver we spoke to said the delays added way more than an hour to his commute. >> for about an hour and 20 minutes. so it's, you know, it's quite a bit. i usually it takes me an hour to get home to santa rosa. now it's going to be like a three hour delay. so we've just got to bear with it. >> caltrans says the repairs were done just in time for that morning commute tomorrow in san jose, crews say they expect to reopen an off ramp along 880 at about midnight after a sinkhole prompted the closure of that area. the sinkhole opened up in the northbound direction of the interstate, shutting down the alameda exit. highway patrol says it was first reported shortly before 1030 this morning. at this time, crews say they expect to reopen the off ramp at about midnight tonight. a 7-eleven convenience store in oakland just cannot catch a break. it was once again hit by

thieves twice in one day. our krystal bailey went to the neighborhood where some feel helpless and wonder when the thieves will stop hitting the 7-eleven. >> the 7-eleven on grand avenue in oakland, hit by thieves again twice in the same day. >> it's a common occurrence around here, and it's getting to be kind of bad. >> oakland police says the first incident happened around 845 sunday morning. police say multiple suspects, possibly armed with a gun, walked in and demanded cash from the register, taking off in a car waiting outside. in the second hit, just after four in the afternoon, police say two people, possibly armed with a knife, came in, took cash and ran off. the owner did not respond to our request for comment, but the store clerk tells me $1,000 was stolen along with, quote, all the ice cream. neighbors know it's a hot spot for break ins. the windows are still boarded up from the last smash and grabs. >> i think it gets hit harder than some other spots. >> and back in april, when the same shop was broken into twice in 24 hours, the store clerk

told us he was attacked by the thieves, leading him to quit. business owners, scared to talk on camera, tell us they are tired of it. >> that's really heartbreaking. the guys who run this 7-eleven are really sweet. i feel awful for them. >> oakland police arrested the suspects in april's burglaries, but they're still looking for the thieves from the break ins on sunday. >> i don't think people should be afraid of the crime, but i want to help support our local businesses. >> investigators say these are two separate incidents, so it's likely that they are two different groups involved. and if you know anything, you're asked to contact opd in oakland. crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. >> san mateo county supervisors will hold a special meeting thursday to consider removing sheriff christina corpus from office. the board must approve the start of the removal process with a 4/5 vote. the move is allowed under measure a, a charter amendment passed by 84% of voters in november, giving the board the power to remove a sheriff for cause through the year 2028. an independent audit

accused sheriff corpus of abusing her power and allegations she has repeatedly denied. tonight we're hearing from the attorney of the suspect charged in that crash that killed an oakland teacher last week, 18 year old eric hernande. torres was scheduled to graduate saturday from a rise high school in oakland, but instead he's been charged with vehicular manslaughter, evading police and hit and run. police say the vehicle torres was driving struck and killed a math teacher from castlemont high school. >> he has an unformed brain, right? the studies show your brain is not fully formed as far as your reactivity and your ability to make decisions between right and wrong. >> authorities say hernandez crashed into a minivan at east 21st street and park boulevard, also in oakland, during a brief chase by chp. they say the car was not stolen. next, at 11, we are hearing from the authors of a book who say the president's inner circle ignored signs of former president biden's

be missed, as bouquets to art will be at both museums. and be sure not to miss the legion. >> and proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward exhibitions, conservation projects, as well as education programs in santa clara county. firefighters will be conducting a prescribed burn over the next couple of days at calero county park. about 60 acres of grass expected to be burned. smoke most likely to be visible from highway 101. this is expected to get underway starting tomorrow morning at 10:00 and wildfires burning across canada, prompting an air quality advisory here in the bay area. the smoke from these fires being pushed by winds across parts of the u.s, the bay area air quality management district says people may notice a light haze across the bay area come tomorrow. with that, we check in with our chief meteorologist, mark tamayo. pretty breezy out there today, mark. >> yeah, that's right mike. it's that time of year. the winds do tend to pick up, and that's going to be the pattern once again for tomorrow as well. so those winds definitely notice those increasing into the afternoon hours especially out

toward the delta right around parts of the bay as well. highs this afternoon. no heat to worry about. 6070 the warmest locations in the 80s. you heard about the smoke coming in from canada and the bulk of that smoke, at least the higher concentrations will be well to our east. but there's a chance, as you heard, we could have some haze develop in the bay area skies. so a bit of a haze out there. we also have that air quality advisory for tomorrow as well. here's the plan for your tuesday, as we do have some fog in the morning becoming partly sunny into the afternoon hours, and then more sunshine inland, temperatures on track to reach the low to mid 80s tomorrow afternoon. here's a satellite where you can see this circulation down towards southern california. they actually may pick up a few showers in their forecast for tomorrow. for us, we have the low clouds already kind of bulking up in coverage for tonight, already pushing back into the bay as we check out the current wind reports. right now there's fairfield southwesterly. it's still windy there, sustained at 28 miles an hour. some more reports for you sfo, a westerly breeze at nine and san jose winds out of the northwest

at seven miles per hour. here is our live camera looking out toward sfo right now. and some low clouds already back in this picture for tonight. current numbers in the 50s and the 60s. concord right now 60 and san jose has dropped off into the upper 50s at 59. so overnight temperatures back down into the 50s. the cool spots could be in the upper 40s. so cloud cover near the coast and right around parts of the bay. and that's what our forecast model showing tomorrow morning. so the clouds will definitely be a factor tomorrow morning. and then into the afternoon hours, the clouds clear back to near the coastline. we could still have some leftover partly cloudy skies for the shoreline and temperatures tomorrow from the 60s to the 70s to the 80s. so no heat in our forecast at all. there's some mild to warm pattern, wants to stick around not only for tomorrow, but also as we head toward thursday and friday and into the weekend as well. highs for tomorrow will be in the 60s. warmest locations back up into the 70s and the 80s, so kind of getting fairly

warm inland, but no heat advisories, no triple digits, and there's a really little day to day change in our forecast over the next few days, as you can see, maybe cooling off by just a few degrees into thursday and then a little bit of a bump in the numbers as we head toward the weekend. so it looks like a cruise control forecast that will take us into wednesday, thursday and friday and into the weekend as well, with looks like maybe just a kind of warm inland cool for the coast and mild right around the bay. >> got it. all right, mark. thank you. new at 11. a new santa cruz county civil grand jury report says the county is not doing enough to inform the public about how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. this report found outdated websites and poor outreach despite state mandates requiring major emission cuts by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2045. the jury is urging the county to step up outreach from social media to saw and assign a dedicated office by next year. the board of supervisors has until september to respond. a north bay community wants the marin

municipal water district to rethink plans to expand the nicasio reservoir, according to the marin independent journal. residents in the area say they're worried the reservoir could make flooding worse along nearby creeks. the district says it's taking those concerns seriously and will study the area's flood risk before making any big decisions. another public meeting is scheduled for july 15th. 15 young adults reached an exciting milestone as students in the young adult program at laney college. each of them earn a foundations of art certificate through a program supported by the oakland unified school district, which serves students with disabilities ages 18 to 22. the program is designed to help them develop the skills and confidence to lead meaningful, independent lives, including the chance to continue their education at a community college. >> it's important that we all know that individuals with intellectual and developmental developmental disabilities really can make their own choices, be who they want to be,

a federal hate crime. the story does begin tonight's west coast rap. mohamed suleiman is also facing numerous charges from the state, including attempted murder. prosecutors say he posed as a gardener to get close to the pro-israel group holding its weekly demonstration on pearl street. they say he threw two incendiary devices, injuring 12 people. an fbi affidavit says suleiman confessed to the attack after being taken into custody yesterday, and told the police he was driven by a desire to, quote, kill all zionist people. >> when he was interviewed about the attack, he said he wanted them all to die. he had no regrets and he would go back and do it again. >> at this time, prosecutors say they believe the suspect acted alone. his bond is set at $10 million. in utah, a nonprofit working to maintain the visibility of lgbtq plus community by distributing pride flags to kick off pride month. this is despite the state's ban

from waving pride flags on government property and in public schools. more than 100 volunteers staked 2700 pride flags over the weekend. some of those flags given out to a salt lake city church, who says their pride flags were stolen over this past weekend. >> i know for the lgbtq folks in the community, it's a little bit jarring to have the flags there one day and then know that that someone came along and deliberately pulled them out. that's frightening for people who have experienced religious trauma. >> the reverend curtis price says there's been an uptick in vandalism across their community as anti lgbtq plus bills are introduced across the u.s. during pride. events have also been canceled or scaled back to the lack of funding and political pressure. also, two missing boaters have been recovered in washington state more than a week after their boat went down during a shrimping trip. the 26 foot vessel sank on may 21st after distress calls came in around

despite concerns and might have to be canceled this year because of the city's budget issues, the program was able to return this year thanks to a partnership with eat, learn, play, east bay community foundation and the alameda county food bank. the meals are available at dozens of sites across oakland to all children under the age of 18, not just oakland students and some adults with disabilities. the oakland free summer meal program runs all the way through mid-august. now to the south bay, where school may be out for many students, but a longtime

nonprofit already planning for back to school season. today was the kickoff for santa clara county families to register for sacred heart's annual pack a backpack drive. it provides essential school supplies to thousands of students in the south bay. to register, families must have a sacred heart membership number. people who are in need can sign up on the organization's website. supporters say the impact on the community is powerful. >> i want to share a quick story. a mom came to us last summer, newly unhoused and living under a car with two kids. she said, i didn't even have a pencil to give them. when she left fully stocked backpacks, she told us it was the first time in weeks she could breathe. >> the required documents to register include a photo id and proof of each child's age, such as a birth certificate, immunization record or medical card. sacred heart says they're also looking for donations and volunteers to help. and that is
