lawmakers are denouncing that move. good evening, everyone, i'm heather holmes. the naval ship honors the slain gay rights leader and navy veteran. milk was the first openly gay elected official in california when he won a seat on the san francisco board of supervisors. he was assassinated in city hall in 1978. this is video now of when the usns harvey milk was christened back in 2021. the trump administration, though, was reportedly planning to rename this ship, as well as others, including those named for thurgood marshall, harriet tubman and cesar chavez, saying that defense secretary pete hegseth is committed to having ship names reflect a warrior ethos. california officials are furious about these changes. san francisco congresswoman nancy pelosi, who was at the christening ceremony, said, quote, the reported decision by the trump administration to change the names of the usns harvey milk and other ships in the john lewis class is a

shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the american dream. she goes on to say that our military is the most powerful in the world, but this spiteful move does not strengthen our national security or the warrior ethos. instead, it is a surrender of a fundamental american value to honor the legacy of those who worked to build a better country. hegseth himself has not yet commented, but this reported renaming comes just as pride month begins. and earlier tonight on the news at six, the executive director of s.f. pride says this is indeed a slap in the face to the lgbtq community, making the meaning behind this year's parade more powerful than ever. >> we've been out saying with the message, saying the message that if you come to pride this year, it's a revolutionary act because you're sending a message to washington, d.c, that you stand for the values that san francisco pride does, you can love who you love, and you can be who you are. and that's what

san francisco pride stands for. so it's more important than ever. you know, i know it's hard to get down to the embarcadero, to market street, but on pride sunday, we need to send a clear message that we hold those values. >> now, suzanne ford, the executive director of sf pride, went on to emphasize the importance of carrying on harvey milk's legacy, and the renaming moves away from that history. well, state senator scott wiener also very critical of this idea, saying in part the removal of harvey milk's name from a naval vessel during pride month, no less, is absolutely shameful. harvey milk was a hero. he was a veteran who served our country, and he died for our community. we are staying on top of this story tonight with additional reaction coming up on the 10:00 news. you can also keep track of our coverage right there on the fox local app, so be sure to download that. well, now we go to oakland tonight where business owners in chinatown got some one on one time with law

enforcement and our crime reporter henry lee. he was there today as merchants explained how ongoing crime is really affecting them. >> it's been a familiar sight in oakland's chinatown, an all volunteer patrol taking a walk with police to build connections. but on tuesday, the group was joined not only by oakland police, but a bart officer and an oakland chp captain as well. together, they met local merchants, many of whom voiced concerns about shoplifting. call him. see, that's the problem. when something happens as small as that, as petty as that, you call, you file a police report. >> stewart chen is president of the oakland chinatown improvement council. >> chinatown supports law enforcement. for them to walk and visit and shake and greet the merchants, i think it means a lot. >> this is the first time the chp has taken part in the walk. >> no. it's great. i mean, that's what, you know, working together as a team, you know, with the community and law enforcement. i mean, at the end of the day, we're on the same

goal is to make. >> but i asked oakland chp captain mike novosel about those who don't want chp officers chasing suspects on oakland city streets. they point to the death of castlemont high teacher, marvin boomer, who was struck and killed by a suspect after chp chase. >> there's critics in every field of work, whether it's the restaurant, movies, law enforcement, you know, media. there's critics everywhere. so obviously not everybody's going to be happy. but that's part of the job of law enforcement. >> i'll stop by. so maybe when they see a maybe. >> oakland police officer, tony chang, is assigned to chinatown. >> i'm from oakland. i still live in oakland. family, friends, everyone shopping in chinatown. so? so the crime that occurred here, i take it very personally. >> bart. police officer john chu's headquarters is adjacent to oakland's chinatown. >> we're committed and determined to providing safety and security for our patrons and the community around us. we're eager to help. >> joe ma is chair of the all volunteer patrol. through interpreter, he said things have changed.

>> the security in chinatown is improving, much improving. but i am not still satisfied with current situation. >> owner of al street cafe that's been hit by crime, says she's grateful she's on the radar of three law enforcement agencies. >> especially like the three of them, they have to communicate each other, but like if all together. so they would do something. >> it's clear that at least here in chinatown, merchants are welcoming law enforcement with open arms, no matter what badge they wear in oakland. henry lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> and as oakland prepares to pass its city budget, the bay area council, that's a group of bay area business leaders is recommending, quote, urgent reforms. that report calls on the city to prioritize public safety above all else, saying that the city is at a breaking point. the bay area council says crime is having a significant impact on the number of people who shop, dine and enjoy entertainment, leading to a significant drop in tax revenue and empty shops and offices.

among other recommendations is to expand funding for public safety and to secure future dedicated funding resources for opd. well, new. at 730 tonight, san francisco police say a man suspected in dozens of thefts is under arrest and facing charges under a new retail theft law. one that we approved a few months ago. 51 year-old neil peck was arrested for burglary in grand theft at a store on mission street near fourth street back on may 25th. a patrol officer discovered that peck was a suspect in 16 other thefts from one store alone. after the passage of proposition 36 last year. well, people with two or more prior theft convictions can now be charged with a felony. peck now faces felony theft, burglary and grand theft charges. also new. at 730 tonight, parents and students, as well as community advocates. they all gathered ahead of the tamalpais union high school district board meeting that's taking place tonight. this is

the community rallies in support of the black student population in marin, and also pushes for programs that support support minority student success. now, this past school year, the district implemented a set of critical support services, including the black student success support team, the team that students have said made a lasting impact on their time in high school and their preparations for college. well, tonight's board meeting was filled with members of the community. they are angry as the board of trustees considers cutting those services, services that members of the school community say are critical. >> the people are the space. and by terminating these contracts, you are effectively sabotaging the improvement of our future. >> do not abandon our kids now. continue with the current contracts. don't pull this out from under them. i have kids that are depending on this. don't change it. think about the outrage. >> students and community members comes as the students have reported several racist

incidents and anti anti-semitic graffiti on campus. we will have a full report on this meeting and more reaction coming up tonight at ten. tonight, students are mourning a stanford university student who was killed while riding an e-bike on campus. stanford says ahmed shah chador was struck by a vehicle just before three on saturday morning near palm drive and arboretum road. tonight, dozens of students and staff gathered for a memorial for chador, who was a sophomore. the university says he was born in maryland and grew up in pakistan. he was studying political science and international relations. he was the president of the stanford democrats, and he had also contributed to the stanford daily newspaper as a freshman. the california highway patrol is investigating the incident. all right. we're getting a look at what may have caused that fire at the martinez refinery earlier this year. we'll tell you about the findings of a new report.

county park for live fire training sessions. ground and aerial personnel were at today's prescribed burns. firefighters say they not only help crews prepare, but they also reduce wildfire risk by cutting the available material to burn. >> this does provide a fire break. the burned areas here will actually act as a safe zone from which crews can operate, so that if we have fires on the other side of the hill, they can start here. they've got a safe zone to work from, and they also know that the fire will not be able to proceed into this area. >> this is where it starts. and so when we do get those real life fires and you know, we're ready. >> the training sessions will continue tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and burn about 60 acres of grass and oak. well, another firefighting tool is sits high atop mount tamalpais. i'm talking about the fire lookout. it is staffed by volunteers who help spot fires before they get out of control. and our chief meteorologist, mark tamayo, he spent the day here at the lookout, and he talked with one

of the volunteers who showed us a device called the osborne fire finder. >> possibly the oldest piece of equipment in the fire service. it's basically a flat map and a compass. so on the outside of this ring, our compass headings and we will use the sighting to zero in on where we see a smoke. and then based on the compass heading and the proximity from the center, which is where we are, we can estimate a bearing and a distance. so i could see a smoke and tell the dispatch center it's 25 degrees, six miles. >> pretty cool. the lookout sits at the highest point in marin county, standing more than 20 500ft above sea level, staffed with about 50 volunteers who also staff fire engines and bulldozers for the fire season. okay, let's head outside as we take a live look at the bay bridge in san francisco. there, in the distance, bay area air quality officials say they've extended an air advisory until

tomorrow due to wildfire smoke from canada. and you can really see that haziness over the city right now. officials say air quality may reach levels considered unhealthy and that the smell of smoke is possible. there are more than 200 wildfires in canada right now. okay, let's get more on the conditions and our weather with our meteorologist, roberto gonzalez. really something to see there. quite hazy. and it's amazing, isn't it, to. >> see that all that smoke from across the border in canada makes its way all the way here to the bay area, but due to a southwest wind that will kick up 10 to 20mph tomorrow, we will experience less haze. hi everybody. let's take a look at today's temperatures. 63 in pacifica to 86 degrees in antioch. it was in the low 80s in livermore, 84 in concord. and the closer you got to the bay, 60s and 70s were common peninsula. it was just a gorgeous seasonal late spring day, and currently it's slow to cool east of the bay and even to the north at 70 in novato. we do

have a little bit of an onshore push, dropping our temperatures in san francisco and the peninsula, otherwise 70 in san jose. now tonight, overnight becoming partly cloudy, we will see areas of fog. temperature wise into the 40s and 50s, it will burn off cooler and faster. this is our live weather camera. we do have clouds down to 900ft now. this is a very shallow marine layer and it's pushing onshore. here it is. you know we've had this eddy offshore and it's been wiping the marine layer away. the same thing with the smoke for tomorrow. but look at what's happening over southern california. this is all monsoonal moisture. that is all associated to what was once the first tropical storm of the season. its name was alvin. it was off the cabo san lucas coastline and began to fall apart, lift up into northerly direction, spread its precipitation across arizona just about two hours outside of phoenix. they got inundated in flagstaff. a dime sized hail today in throughout the vegas area. then all this trailed off towards palm springs into. look

at that. the higher elevations of the mojave desert, 4100ft just outside of bishop. some thunderstorm activity back at home. a little patchy stratus right now pushing on shore. and then it will wipe away early tomorrow. the abundance of sunshine for all temperatures going up just a couple of degrees. that's about it. then we have a stronger onshore push by wednesday night into your thursday that will knock back the temperatures. until then, check it out 63 along the sea shore, back through moss beach into monteiro beach. how about 82? in santa rosa, mid 80s. and throughout the tri valley 79 fremont and newark as well as in union city. and it's a pretty stable weather pattern each and every day. heather. all the way through sunday. >> okay. thanks so much, roberta. appreciate it. well, a new report presented to the contra costa county's health oversight committee is shedding new light on what may have attributed contributed to a fire at the martinez refinery back in february. the report says a lack of qualified contract workers

building housing for the homeless has passed the state senate. the bill, authored by menlo park state senator josh becker, would require cities and counties to access the resources needed to bring all unsheltered people indoors, to use tools to fast track the creation of housing, and to promote regional collaboration so small cities can also contribute to the solution, becker says. california's homeless population

reached more than 187,000 last year, with most people sleeping outside. that bill now moves to the assembly. city leaders in san francisco say that many of the fire department's vehicles are old and in need of replacement. as ktvu christien kafton tells us tonight, several city leaders are working on new legislation to help firefighters begin upgrading the aging fleet. >> with more than 800,000 san francisco residents, emergencies are relatively commonplace, and fire vehicles, including this 1990s era engine, roll out at all hours of the day and night. that puts a lot of miles on these vehicles that the department has had for decades. in many cases, this hose tender was manufactured in the 1970s and would almost certainly have to be called upon in the case of a major earthquake or disaster. the city's fire chief said san francisco needs newer trucks. >> it's really important because they're running all day. they're very busy. you know, we live in earthquake country. there's a lot of chance for large fires,

so we need our apparatus to constantly be functional. >> now, a pair of laws are making their way through city hall. one allows wealthy benefactors to step up and donate money for new vehicles. the other would allow the fire department to deal directly with fire equipment manufacturers to fast track deals. supervisor connie chan sponsored both pieces of legislation. >> what we're hoping for is under one year, we can see new fire apparatus delivered to the doorstep of our fire department. >> the fire department said new trucks cost $2.5 million or more. new engines, 1.5 million. mayor daniel leary has already signed the legislation to allow the city to seek private funding. he said, making sure the department can get the money it needs, even while the city faces a budget crisis, is critical. >> we have to make sure that we are on firm footing when it comes to disaster response, and this legislation is going to help us do that. >> chief crispin said. the sooner his department can source private funds and begin negotiating with manufacturers, the better. >> it is critically important. i mean, as i said, we live in an
