authorities. >> we want him to come home, and we want people like him to come home because that's not who should be detained or deported. >> and this comes as ice activity ramps up across the bay area. good evening, i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. we'll get to that story in the latest on immigration enforcement in just a minute. but first, a berkeley homeless encampment is being called a public health hazard. so this morning, police and city workers took it down. but then hours later, a federal judge stepped in to put a stop on the removal. ktvu is amber lee live tonight here in studio with the story. amber. >> mike. we saw people returning to the area pitching tents and getting resettled this afternoon. soon after the judge issued the order, the spokesperson for the city of berkeley says the removal of the encampment was intended to create a safe environment for everyone, and that includes the area's homeless as well as residents and businesses. >> and it's all on shopping cart wheels. >> aaron spencer shows me his makeshift home on wheels. >> if i can move out of the way

quickly enough, then you know i might get to keep some of my stuff. >> he tells me he scrambled to move it around 6 a.m. wednesday, from where he usually parks near the intersection of eighth and harrison streets in berkeley. that's when police and public works crews moved in to remove a homeless encampment. >> they gave us no warning, and then suddenly we have to leave 20 minutes to grab and get gone. >> it just hasn't been safe for anyone. we've seen rodents rotting garbage, feces, combustible materials, hypodermic needles. >> but a spokesperson for the city of berkeley says notices were posted in january that it intended to close the camp. but the berkeley homeless union, an advocacy group, says it received a temporary restraining order from a federal judge to stop what it calls encampment sweeps. but that order expired late last month and that this notice was posted on wednesday. >> this is the notice that they posted for the sweep, which they

posted three quarters of the way through the sweep. >> so this morning. >> yes, this morning. >> on wednesday afternoon, a federal judge ordered the city not to close the encampment, at least until next week. chaco says the dozen people at this encampment were offered an alternative, and that people from other encampments are now housed in this motel that has been converted into housing for the homeless. >> that's why we've tried so hard to house people. but as we know, you can't force somebody to take housing. >> one woman says she lost her belongings. she had been away at a sobriety treatment center when the city tried to remove the encampment. >> i was kind of very flabbergasted. i was very upset. >> this man returned to this area with his trailer as soon as he heard that a judge had stopped the city from shutting down the encampment, at least temporarily. >> i'm. i'm a dumpster diver. i'm a scrapper. i go, and i find the interesting things that other people think they don't need and have thrown away. you can't do that in the hotels.

they offer. >> the berkeley spokesperson says officials will follow the law and take a look at next steps. there is a court hearing scheduled for this matter on june 10th. >> mike june 10th. next tuesday we'll be there. amber. thank you. now to the south bay, where the san jose mayor, matt mehan, is increasing the push for his responsibility to shelter initiative ahead of a very critical city council vote next week. he was joined today by other city leaders who support his proposal to move people in tents and encampments into temporary housing and treatment programs. now, if the proposal moves forward, those who choose not to accept shelter after three attempts would be subject to arrest for trespassing. >> have a chance to change that. we have a chance to use a brief, targeted interaction with our justice system to intervene before people fall into chronic homelessness and give them the opportunity to find appropriate

services and turn their lives around. >> now, this plan is included in the mayor's budget proposal. the city council is scheduled to take a final vote on the budget on tuesday. >> we do have some new details on that massive tree that fell and crushed two cars in san mateo today, injuring one person. let's give you a live look at south railroad avenue near ninth avenue. you can see that massive tree now in this area that's taped off. but check out that vehicle and you can see the damage done and how heavy this tree was. and really it came down hitting two cars. the cleanup in this area has actually been underway for hours, but this is extensive damage that you're dealing with. you can see even damage to that fence. there is that tree really stretched behind that whole area. the city says fire crews did treat one person at the scene. they had non-life threatening injuries. now, that fallen tree was reported shortly after 3:00 this afternoon. still no word on what may have caused

it to come down, but as you just saw, there was a white pickup truck that was smashed under the branches and the co-owner of the nearby green fashion nursery says the tree destroyed about a third of their merchandise. >> plants, ironwork. you know, our fence, our shade tarp. you know, a lot of infrastructure in our in our property. >> anything you want. >> and at this point, still no estimate on when crews may be done with their work clearing that area. san jose police are investigating two reported sexual assaults near the los gatos creek trail. officers were canvasing the neighborhood around lee avenue today. police say they believe a man attacked two people in the neighborhood. police say the suspect is in his 30s. he was last seen wearing a black hoodie with green writing there you see him on your screen. also had blue jeans on. police posting this photo to x, asking the public to let them know if they've seen this man. if you have seen him, you're

being asked to call 911 or the police department. police are expected to be in the neighborhood all night and into next week. >> a lawsuit against bart is now moving forward, one year after a woman was shoved right into an oncoming train and died. it happened at the powell street station in san francisco in july last year. the 74 year old woman was taking bart home after leaving her job at a hotel in union square. prosecutors say 49 year old trevor belmont shoved her into that train. police arrested him at the station on the platform. the victim's nephew and six siblings have all filed a lawsuit alleging bart's faregates and overall platform design are dangerous. we did reach out to bart for comment. we have not yet heard back. >> in sonoma county, advocates say a judge refused to issue a gag order against an animal rights activist who is facing felony charges. 22 year old zoe rosenberg is charged with stealing and freeing four chickens from purdue. petaluma poultry back in 2023. she

accuses the poultry farm of cruelty to animals. she is facing felony conspiracy and three misdemeanors. but supporters say theft charges against her were dropped. today, the uc berkeley student is set to return to court on june 13th. new at ten a federal judge ruled the trump administration must allow more than 100 migrants sent to a prison in el salvador to challenge their deportations. these migrants were accused of being part of a venezuelan gang under an old wartime law. but evidence suggests many are not connected to the gang. the judge ordered the administration to provide a way for the migrants to contest their removals, criticizing the lack of due process. the case is part of an ongoing legal battle and several battles over immigration policies, with the supreme court previously ruling that those targeted under the alien enemies act have the right to appeal. >> president trump bringing back the travel ban policy from his first term. he signed a proclamation banning people from a dozen countries from entering

the united states. now, most of those nations are in africa, including libya, chad and sudan. also on the list afghanistan and iran. the order also heightens restrictions on visitors from seven other countries, including cuba. the president explained his reasoning behind the ban in a video posted to the white house's social media account. >> recent terror attack in boulder, colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted, as well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas. we don't want them. >> the suspect in the boulder, colorado, attack is an egyptian national, and egypt is not on the list of affected countries, although the president did say that list is subject to change. the ban takes effect monday. the president also signed an executive order blocking nearly all foreign students from entering the u.s. to attend harvard university, he said

gathered to voice support for miguel lopez. >> the father of three is being held by ice following his detention at an immigration hearing in san francisco. ktvu john kranjac is live for us in livermore tonight with the message from his loved ones. john. john. >> yeah. claudine and mike. the rally. a rally was held here earlier this evening in livermore and plaza. and supporters of miguel lopez are calling for him and others like him to be released from custody. >> miguel. home. >> people chanted. cars honked their horns and family members got emotional. >> my dad, miguel, is an amazing father. >> as hundreds of people rallied in downtown livermore wednesday night calling for miguel lopez to be returned home. >> i feel loved. i feel like i'm being heard. finally, i feel a lot of support from not just friends, families, teachers, the community. >> rosa lopez says her husband

was detained by ice agents at the immigration facility in san francisco last tuesday after he reported for a regular check in with authorities. the couple married in 2001. she's a u.s. citizen. he's undocumented, brought to the u.s. by his parents from mexico city when he was 18. for years, the family has lived in livermore, where they've raised three children amid a drawn out court battle trying to get miguel legal status. >> he always shows a lot, a lot of love, not only for his family but his friends. so i feel like him not being here is a big difference. i can feel it. >> miguel is a really good man. he has worked at a local vineyard for over nine years paying taxes. this this isn't. this isn't someone that should be ripped from his home. >> lopez's attorney says he's currently being held at a facility in mcfarland, california, but it's unclear how long he'll be there. >> if he is removed before his district court case is

adjudicated, i think that his chances of ever returning to the united states are zero. >> and as lopez awaits his fate, ice made multiple arrests on tuesday in san jose on blossom hill road near highway 85. ice, confirming the operation continued wednesday, with even more people detained. some were taken to the nearby chavez supermarket parking lot for processing ice, saying those arrested had executable final orders of removal and had not complied with that order. in san francisco wednesday, some businesses put up posters informing people of what to do if ice shows up at your door. >> my advice to people is that of course you have to know your rights. they can't come to your house without a warrant. >> i'm just angry at what they're doing. they they're just taking people unfairly. >> we stand with you. >> miguel lopez's family, hoping the show of support, much of it

from total strangers, will make a difference. >> it means the world to us. it's. it feels great to have a lot of people, you know, be here for us. >> now, regarding lopez's case, ice says that any non-citizen in the u.s. without legal status is subject to removal. even those who have court appeals that are currently ongoing. but lopez's family and their supporters say they will not be backing down in their fight to bring him home. claudine. >> all right. a story we will continue to follow. john. thank you. well, union members have approved a labor contract with the santa clara valley transportation authority after a contentious strike. the union went on strike in march, crippling vta service across the south bay for nearly three weeks. the four year deal raises wages of bus operators and mechanics by 14.5% over the course of the contract. employees also received enhanced

dental benefits, a voucher for uniforms, and improved workplace conditions. contract negotiations had been going on since august of 2024. >> i also believe that this went on a little bit longer than it probably should have, and there's some things for us to learn, and we'll have to sort of do a little deep dive to figure out exactly how that next process flows. the good news is we've got four years to figure that out. >> the vta board of directors is expected to vote to approve this deal as soon as tomorrow. the new contract would go into effect starting next monday. >> 45 foot. betty? you always seem to find the party, and there's a party there tonight. >> it is a full on celebration out here. mike and claudine. it is still buzzing at this hour and this is why. take a look. i am with hundreds of diehard fans who will be among the first to get their hands on the nintendo switch two. some of them even came dressed as their favorite characters tonight. now to get your hands on the switch two, these fans had to first secure a reservation online. those consoles, as you mentioned, started rolling out at 9 p.m. tonight and will continue for at least the next hour or so. now, this new system retails for about $450, making it the priciest and most powerful console yet from nintendo fans here say it is all worth it. this version comes with increased storage, a larger screen, and new features like in-game voice chat. earlier today, there was a launch party here at the store, which is only

the second nintendo retail location in the u.s. when it opened just a few weeks ago, city leaders said it was another sign of union square's comeback. this year alone, we've seen several new openings here, including fashion files, shoe palace and there was a flagship, zara also on the way, just to name a few. i am live with the very first customer who you just saw, who purchased that coveted console. dean, your high school freshman. tell me what that moment felt like. >> well, there was a lot of adrenaline. so it was. it was. i don't remember most of it, but i know bill trinen handed me a nintendo switch, and i just, i loved it, it was amazing. all every nintendo fan in there has waited so long for this, and we are all so excited, and i'm just glad i could even be here. >> and you told me you were able to get the day off school to be here. a lot of planning went into this, but you also gave up a lot to make these purchases

smoke, what it does with the air flow, it graces the rockies. and then it takes a westerly turn into the bay area. and then what happens is we have this marine layer with the marine layer and that warmer air aloft. they combine and they hold that haze in the upper atmosphere. thus we have the hazy conditions during tomorrow's afternoon here in the bay area. again, while we have clear skies to the north of us in shasta. but this is why the bay area air quality district issued the air quality advisory again for thursday. they extended it and everybody is going to see some hazy conditions. now. one thing that is notable is with this air quality advisory. in effect, the haze is in the upper atmosphere. we are down closer to the surface and we have a lid on us because of our stable air mass, so that's a good thing for us. it's not dangerous to us, except it is a good idea to monitor the sensitive, the children, the elderly, and of course, those with respiratory ailments. we'll

weeks, with several celebratory events before the big parade on sunday, june 29th. organizers say pride is on and despite concern about funding, nothing was cut. but as the pentagon discusses stripping harvey milk's name off a navy ship and ongoing threats to queer rights, this year's theme is queer joy is resistance. >> they are not going to take away our joy in this city, because you can love who you love, and you can be who you are. >> at sfpd headquarters, city leaders kicked off pride month on wednesday with an event celebrating its lgbtq plus officers. >> sfpd has taken meaningful steps to become a more inclusive department. that work doesn't just benefit lgbtq plus officers, it makes the department more responsive, culturally competent, and more effective in serving every community across this city. >> chief bill scott saying sfpd will make sure everyone feels safe at pride. >> pride will be very heavily deployed like it always is. back in 2022, sf pride banned

inclusion. san francisco receives about $50 million in federal funding for homeless housing. santa clara county gets $33 million. they filed suit along with 28 other jurisdictions. the injunction bars hud from imposing the new grant conditions. >> the u.s. transportation secretary announced he wants to cancel $4 billion in federal grants for california's high speed rail project. now, this project has had budget problems for years, but california officials telling ktvu jana katsuyama that they plan to fight to keep the funding and the project on track. >> california's high speed rail project came under fire wednesday, as u.s. transportation secretary sean duffy announced he wants to take back some $4 billion in federal grant funding that was authorized for the project. in an interview with fox news, secretary duffy said. >> not one high speed track has been laid and we're $16 billion in 17 years into the project. >> the secretary says california

has 37 days to respond to his letter and the 310 page federal railroad administration compliance review report stated that california failed in nine key areas, including missed deadlines for procuring trains and funding shortages to pay for contractor delays, as well as electrifying the rails and an inability to get the trains in operation by 2033. >> the timelines and the budget for the california high speed rail is they can't meet them right. and so we have $4 billion that has been authorized to go to california to build this project. and we don't want to invest in boondoggles. >> the california high speed rail authority issued a statement saying in part, quote, the authority strongly disagrees with the fra's conclusions, which are misguided. while continued federal partnership is important to the project, the majority of our funding has been provided by the state. the governor's budget proposal extends at least 1 billion per year in funding for the next 20 years, providing the necessary resources to complete the project's initial operating

segment. >> so we continue throwing good money after bad. should we say that we've already wasted $17 billion? so what's another 100 billion? i don't think that's the right thing to do. >> is politically motivated and needlessly vengeful. when the federal government agrees to commit funding for local infrastructure projects. communities across the country need to be able to rely on the federal government to deliver on its promise. >> and trump won. they tried to cancel, i believe it was $1 billion, and california sued and won. they can't just willy nilly cancel it. there has to be a reason, and we don't think they have a reason and we'll fight them on it. >> the california high speed rail authority says the project has successfully overcome environmental clearances on 463 miles of the 494 mile san francisco to l.a. route, and they are pursuing private partnerships to help with funding. reporting from the studio, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news.

>> president trump's proposed budget bill will increase the national deficit by trillions of dollars. that is according to a new analysis released today by the congressional budget office. the so-called big beautiful bill aims to cut taxes by more than $3 trillion, which this new report says would raise the deficit by $2.4 trillion. the bill would also leave nearly 11 million people without health insurance over the next decade. >> so it's going to have a big impact on the patient population that we serve. we serve the most vulnerable, those who also are the least insured. and what it's going to mean for us is that we'll have fewer resources to provide care for our patient population. >> the budget bill also makes it tougher to qualify for medicare and removes coverage for those who are undocumented. the bill narrowly cleared the house last month but now faces fiscal hawks in the senate. >> elon musk, not letting up on his criticism of the bill after

calling it an abomination yesterday. today, he urged voters to tell congress to start over. posting on x, quote, bankrupting america is not okay. kill the bill. end quote. lawmakers who support the bill say it's necessary to implement president trump's agenda, and they intend to use federal funding cuts and revenue from tariffs to offset the cost. >> we have time for a brand new bill, and i want elon and all my friends to recognize the complexity of what we've accomplished here. this extraordinary piece of legislation. >> members of the senate finance committee met with the president at the white house as he tries to gather their support. president trump has signaled that he wants the bill signed by the 4th of july. the president has ordered an investigation into former president joe biden's use of an autopen to sign documents. now, autopen has been used by many presidents over the years, but president trump says former president biden's aides used the device to hide his cognitive decline and

push their own agendas. house republicans are demanding interviews with top biden advisers, threatening subpoenas if they do not cooperate. democrats call the move a political distraction. a spokesperson for the former president declined to comment. >> former biden press secretary karine jean-pierre says she left the democratic party and is now an independent after working in two democratic administrations. she is publishing a tell all book this fall that calls the white house, quote, broken. jean-pierre came under fire last year for allegations that she was evasive about biden's age and physical condition. the publisher of her upcoming book says it will detail the weeks that led to biden abandoning his bid for a second term. >> coming up tonight at 11, the saga to remove embattled san mateo county sheriff christina corpus. the next step comes tomorrow. >> looking ahead at your bay area forecast all time out the haze and the rays.

chase. make more of what's yours. custody for embezzlement after they were busted for stealing casino chips. ellen mangan dow is accused of embezzling chips from the casino where she works in san jose, and then passing them off to her husband to cash out. san jose police say they believe embezzled. they embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars over several years. the two were booked on may 30th for felony embezzlement and conspiracy. san jose police responded to reports about the alleged embezzlement on may 23rd, and that's when they say they found nearly $5,000 worth of chips on mangan day out. they

also executed a search warrant, and that's when they say they located $75,000 in cash and another 10,000 more in chips. >> testimony in the sean diddy combs sex trafficking trial continued today. the friend of combs former ex-girlfriend, singer cassie ventura, testified that the rap mogul dangled her off of a 17th floor balcony. she also told jurors she developed bruises after combs threw her onto balcony furniture. the trial is in its fourth week, and so far, prosecutors argue, combs forced and abused women into drug fueled sexual activities for more than two decades. combs has pleaded not guilty to all the charges. >> a man connected to last month's explosion at that fertility clinic in palm springs is now in custody. 32 year old daniel park of washington state, was initially detained in poland but then arrested at jfk in new york city last night. authorities say he flew to europe shortly after the attack. he is accused of giving explosive materials to guy
