see how the highways are doing on this. back to work monday. hi, sal. >> well. hello, rosemary. right now we're off to a great start. let's go right to the bay bridge toll plaza. triple a traffic camera shows everything moving along very nicely there with no major issues. taking a look at the livermore valley. we do have some slow traffic coming in over the altamont pass. after that, though, it looks good into dublin and livermore. 501 let's go back to the headlines. >> all right. sal. thank you. well, even more protests are expected today in los angeles following the street clashes between law enforcement and anti ice demonstrators. the 56 people were arrested in yesterday's protest, according to los angeles police. one person was accused of throwing a molotov cocktail at a police officer. another person on a motorcycle rammed into a line of police officers, injuring one of them. president trump and governor newsom, blaming each other for the violence that erupted from the protests. president trump sent in 300 national guard

troops without the approval of the governor, and governor newsom calls this a serious breach of state sovereignty, and the governor, as well as other democratic leaders, demanded that the national guard should leave. >> we have a president who was moving this country rapidly into authoritarianism. >> breaking with generations of tradition, is only going to incite the situation and make things worse. >> listen to whatever we need to make sure this law and order. >> now, the protesters partially shut down highway 101, while others set fire to police cars and driverless waymo cars and looting was reported at stores in downtown la. but the police acknowledge the daytime protests were more peaceful. but at night there was chaos and president trump's borders are. tom homan threatens to arrest governor newsom and los angeles mayor karen bass if they try to block ice operations. well, governor

newsom responded on social media. trump's border czar is threatening to arrest me for speaking out. come and get me, tough guy. >> los angeles mayor karen bass is also blaming the trump administration for provoking chaos in los angeles. >> it's the last thing our city needs. our city is still trying to recover from the wildfires, and you just think about how so many people were impacted by that. and that's an example of where the administration was helpful. and to go from that situation to where we are now is just really tragic. and i think it's so unfortunate. it's the last thing los angeles needs. >> in addition to the national guard, the federal government says 500 marines are on standby for a potential deployment to los angeles. lapd warned anyone in downtown overnight could be arrested for unlawful assembly. the governor's office sent a letter to the pentagon formally requesting the defense department withdraw national guard troops out of los angeles.

governor newsom shared this letter on social media, saying that there's no need for the national guard to be deployed in los angeles, and it, quote, seems intentionally designed to inflame the situation. now, this is the first time since the civil rights movement in 1965 that a sitting president ordered the national guard to maintain control of a state without permission from the state's governor. then president lyndon johnson ordered the alabama national guard to protect a march led by the reverend martin luther king junior from selma to montgomery. that was after then-governor george wallace refused to do so well, protests also broke out in downtown san francisco, ended with business fronts vandalized, windows broken. even waymo cars destroyed ktvu. james torres in san francisco with how last night's demonstrations ended. good morning james. >> good morning to you, pam. we are standing along sampson street this morning across the street from the four seasons

hotel. you have this chase bank building and you can see some contractors here right now fixing what looks like a bunch of broken glass. they've been vacuuming that for the last few minutes. here. they have boards on standby, looking as if to fill in some of the open space left behind by some of these protesters. just one example here of many throughout downtown san francisco. all of this prompting a response from mayor daniel leary saying while voices should be heard, violence against the city and law enforcement cannot be accepted. we'll show you some video from downtown late last night. you see dozens of san francisco police officers in riot gear lining the streets, some coming face to face with protesters. the mayor says a group remained after the peak of the protest. when the protests were over, that group ended up hurting officers, vandalizing muni vehicles, breaking windows of local businesses as well. we even saw damage and graffiti to a waymo car, and as a result, police ended up arresting about

60 people. there are more demonstrations planned today. that includes a rally at san francisco city hall set for 12:00 noon, and a protest tonight at the 24th mission, 24th street and mission street bart stations. just two examples of many more that we may see throughout the bay area today. we're live this morning in downtown san francisco. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, james, thank you. time is now. 506 president trump's decision to send national guard troops to los angeles is making bay area leaders very worried. local leaders strongly criticized the president's decision to send the national guard to los angeles, calling it unprecedented. it's the first time in 60 years that a president has activated the national guard of a state without it being requested by a governor. >> the president is seeking to create a reality television theater, risking human lives, risking violence. >> it is clear that this move is designed to inflame and divide.

that is the goal to create chaos and inflame and trigger a reaction. >> bay area lawmakers say they share governor newsom's view that sending national guard troops to los angeles increases the chance these protests will turn violent. >> today, the national weather service is warning beachgoers to look out for sneaker waves and rip currents. the advisory covers most of the bay area coastline. forecasters say swells could push waves up to seven feet along parts of the coast. if you do plan to go to the beach today, you are urged to swim near a lifeguard and never turn your back to the water. >> and outside our doors at this hour, we've got, well, more of the same june gloom in full swing. here's a live look over sfo. it's a little tough to see, but perhaps in the sky you got that fog out there. the patchy drizzle. and as we get into the second part of the morning early afternoon, expected to pull back

once again, we will be mostly cloudy at the coastline for today. partly cloudy inside the bay, mostly clear for our inland cities, with a little bit of an onshore breeze that will pick up as we get into the afternoon. right now, fairfield reporting 22mph. sustained. their numbers are very similar to where we started yesterday morning and for the afternoon. a repeat expected for many 52 in san francisco this morning, 53 in oakland, 54 in livermore. so the clouds joining us, temperatures starting out in the 50s. and for the afternoon today ranging from 81 degrees in santa rosa, right where you should be for this time of year, san francisco at 65, a little cool over areas like hayward, but still very mild. low 80s for livermore and upper 70s expected over san jose along the peninsula. 78 in redwood city for today and some of our hotter spots, including antioch and fairfield. looking at 88, not much change. as we get into the days ahead, we may see temperatures drop subtly as

vo: store your guns securely. ♪ locked, unloaded, and away from ammo. this morning. there was a minor earthquake that hit the bay area last night about 930. it was a magnitude 3.4. it was centered in pinole. so far, no damage has been reported. >> more protests are expected across the bay area today, calling for the end of immigration raids by the trump administration in san francisco. people will gather at the california state building on golden gate avenue at noon tonight at six. the from la to the bay protest will be held at the intersection of 24th and mission bart plaza in oakland. a gathering is planned for 6:00 at the fruitvale plaza. and in san jose, people will gather at city hall at 430 on santa clara street. >> in oakland. hundreds of people gathered in jack london square for what's called a community inauguration of mayor barbara lee. it was a ceremonial

event giving residents a chance to welcome barbara lee to her new role. the mayor said she looks forward to working with the constituents to help improve oakland, and she said she's committed to making public safety a priority. >> the apple worldwide developers conference kicks off today at apple park in cupertino. developers and users will be looking at some of the changes coming to the company's software products throughout the year. that could include updates to apple's ai software, and the company could reportedly rename its operating systems to reflect the release year, rather than the version number. in sonoma county, a man is now recovering after he was shot multiple times as he walked to his hotel in petaluma. it happened near redwood way and north mcdowell boulevard just before 4:00 yesterday morning. police say a man came up to the victim and tried to rob him at gunpoint before shooting him twice. the gunman left. the victim took himself to the hospital. he is expected to recover. police have not made any arrests. >> our time now. 513. police say

one man has been arrested after a shootout over the weekend in oakland at a shopping center. police say just before 5 p.m. saturday, they were called to the foothill square shopping center on macarthur boulevard. they say a man tried to rob a 16 year old girl who was coming out of a store, then fired shots at a security guard who tried to stop him. that security guard fired back, hitting the suspect in the torso. the suspect jumped into a car and escaped. police later found him. he was taken to a hospital listed in critical condition. the security guard and the teenager who was leaving the store are both okay. well, oakland police arrested a man in connection with a deadly hit and run crash. the alameda county district attorney charged 61 year old james smith with vehicular manslaughter, after oakland police say he left the scene of a crash on may 4th. investigators say smith crashed his car into 49 year old elmo

ballard near 18th street and san pablo avenue, pinning ballard and his wheelchair beneath the car. ballard later died at the hospital. >> u.s. and chinese officials are continuing negotiations in london to ease tensions over trade and technology. the treasury secretary, commerce secretary and trade representative are leading the u.s. delegation to the talks are expected to focus on deals over rare earth minerals, which are used in microchips and other technology. right now, there is a temporary agreement in place to prevent tariffs from escalating. >> our time's now. 515 president trump's new travel ban from 12 countries and a partial ban for seven others is in effect this morning. the ban is for countries that the white house considers very high risk because of terrorist activity. fox reporter cb cotton has details. >> monday will kick off with new sweeping travel restrictions, which echo a similar move from president donald trump's first term critics then and now,

labeling the move as discriminatory. but the president says it's about national security. his proclamation restricts travel to the u.s. from a total of 19 countries. travel from 12 of those includes afghanistan, iran, libya and somalia, and it's restricted outright and deemed very high risk for a variety of reasons, according to the white house, which cites either terrorist activity, weak or hostile governments, and high visa overstay rates. seven other countries, such as venezuela, cuba and laos, face partial restrictions. trump, explaining his stance, mentioned the terrorist attack suspect in boulder, colorado, accused of throwing molotov cocktails at pro-israel demonstrators. even though egypt is not included in this travel ban, federal officials say that suspect was an egyptian national living in the u.s. illegally after entering on a work visa two years ago. >> the recent terror attack in

boulder, colorado, has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted, as well as those who come here as temporary visitors and overstay their visas. we don't want them. >> the travel ban has several exemptions to include for green card holders, olympic or world cup athletes and afghan interpreters with special immigrant visas. several democratic lawmakers have already condemned the ban, calling it racial and religious profiling. house minority leader hakeem jeffries called it a distraction. >> it seemed to me that donald trump injected this travel ban issue into the discussion as part of a desperate effort to change the story from the brutal attack that elon musk has waged against donald trump personally. >> several civil rights and advocacy groups have already vowed to challenge the president's order in court. in

new york, cb cotton, fox news. >> two bay area real estate companies are battling over private listings last year. compass said it will allow home sellers to market their properties privately, then eventually market the home publicly. however, according to the chronicle, zillow is pushing back and even banning some of the listings. zillow reports compass is trying to corner the market with its private listings. compass says its strategy is meant to benefit buyers and sellers. >> our time now 518. san francisco firefighters are giving us some tips about going hiking along the bluffs in the cliffs in san francisco. it comes after several people had to be rescued over the weekend, including two people who had to be helped up a cliff on saturday. firefighters say the hikers should be sure to stay on the trails and climb up or down cliffs. they also say hikers should stay away from those rocks out there.

one today in honor of immigrant heritage month. san francisco immigrant rights commission will honor eight leaders. the awardees include amy dai, who successfully fought mass evictions for low income families and single room occupancy housing. valeria suarez is also receiving an award for helping youth develop professional work experience through the dreams fellowship. this event takes place tonight at city hall at 530. >> an emotional event was held in boulder, colorado over the weekend, just a week after an attack on pro-israeli protesters. people came out to the boulder jewish festival to celebrate jewish culture and to show support for the victims of

the attack. crowds also gathered to walk in solidarity with the hostages, who are still being held in gaza. the walk was held in the same place where a group demonstrating for those hostages was attacked with molotov cocktails. the man accused in the attack now faces more than 100 charges, including attempted murder and a hate crime. >> jewish festival, something i always try to come to and this year especially i think was very important because of what happened last sunday. >> my friends, my jewish friends and the jewish community here in colorado and the community in israel. i want them to know that they are loved and that we are here. >> now, there wasn't a credible threat to the event, but there was a heavy law enforcement presence. boulder police say no arrests were made. >> our time is now 523. the increase in anti-semitic attacks all over the country has prompted community organizations to take action, and that includes a solidarity walk in the south bay. standing with the jewish community at the same time, bay area religious and advocacy groups held a separate

march in the east bay calling for peace in gaza. ktvu betty lou has details. >> supporters carried israeli flags and signs with photos of hostages, some still in captivity. during a solidarity walk in los gatos, their message the jewish community will not be silenced or intimidated in the face of hate. >> i wanted to also elevate the voices of many in our jewish community that do not feel safe going to synagogue, jewish community centers, other jewish institutions, or even participate in this walk today. they feel they need to hide their star of david's, and they need to rip their mezuzahs off their doors. that is unacceptable. >> the nonprofit jewish silicon valley organized the walk with support from the anti-defamation league, jcr, c bay area and the grassroots group run for their lives, which launched in october 2023. sunday's walk came in the wake of a recent attack in boulder, colorado, where

demonstrators advocating for the release of israeli hostages were injured. >> the jewish community is facing an alarming rise in anti-semitism, whether in the form of vandalism, threats, harassment or violence. the message is the same you are not safe, but we refuse to be silent and we will not stand alone. >> in the east bay, hundreds joined a symbolic 22 mile interfaith pilgrimage from alameda to berkeley in what organizers called a right to return march. the 22 mile route was chosen to mirror the distance between rafah and gaza city. >> we are walking in solidarity with the palestinian right of return to their homes, the right of people to remain and to live in safety. >> participants also used the march to demand an end to the war, and a shift in u.s. foreign

early enough not to cause a big delay on the bridge. we'll keep an eye on it for you and let you know. westbound 580. we're also looking at that. there's some slowing on the altamont pass, but nothing really to speak of in livermore or dublin and in san jose. we're off to a good start. 530 let's get back to the headlines. >> all right. thank you. well, the crisis down in los angeles is calming down following chaotic protests against ice raids in southern california. >> authorities fired flash bangs to try to disperse demonstrators in downtown los angeles. police arrested about 60 protesters over the weekend, including 29 yesterday. but early this morning, law enforcement canceled their tactical alert and reopened all onramps and freeways. transit service has also resumed throughout the city after trains were halted. bus lines rerouted last night due to the violence. more details now from reporter ted lindner about

the extensive damage and demonstrations in southern california. >> fires continued burning overnight across the streets of downtown los angeles as unrest over recent trump administration crackdowns on immigration surged over the weekend. >> this violence that i've seen is disgusting. >> protests first erupted on friday after dozens of immigrants in the area were detained. those demonstrations caused president donald trump to deploy the national guard, citing failures from local officials to squash the gatherings. >> you have violent people, and we're not going to let him get away with it. >> the city's police chief said at least 39 people were arrested since saturday, describing tactics some people use to harm officers. >> we had individuals out there shooting commercial grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you. they have a hammer and they'll break up the cinder block and use that. pass it around to throw at officers, to throw at cars. >> national guard troops first arrived on sunday, a move governor gavin newsom called unlawful in a post to ex, newsom added, quote, president trump is

escalating the situation by threatening to deploy roughly 500 active duty marines to the streets of los angeles. this marks the first time since 1965 that a president deployed his state's national guard without a request from the state's governor, ted lindner, fox news. >> all right, ted, thank you. well, more protests are expected today across the bay area calling for the immigration raids by the trump administration to stop. now, in san francisco, activists will gather at noon at the california state building on golden gate avenue. then tonight at 6 p.m. a from la to the bay. protests will be held at 24th and mission at the 24th and mission bart plaza in oakland. a gathering planned for 6 p.m. at the fruitvale plaza. and in san jose, people will be gathering at city hall at 430 on santa clara streets. >> police say 60 people were arrested in san francisco last night following protests in support of demonstrators in los angeles.

[applause] this was the scene on sansome and jackson streets, near the ice building in the financial district. the protest started peacefully, but police say at about 7:00 some people got aggressive and shattered office building windows and vandalized muni busses. police declared an unlawful assembly to break up the crowd. the arrests happened after some people refused to leave protesters. we spoke to say they wanted this to be a peaceful demonstration. >> i was just so outraged to see the scenes from the last couple of days in los angeles. and i feel like we have to do something here to demonstrate that that is not okay, and that is not okay to treat our neighborhoods and our communities like that. and it's not okay to treat immigrants like that. >> any human in the united states has fourth and 14th amendment rights to due process. these rights are getting trampled on. >> at one point, bart service at

the embarcadero was closed as a small group of demonstrators marched through downtown. sfpd says three officers were hurt and one was taken to the hospital. police say they did recover one gun at the scene. here's some more video from the moments the protests got more chaotic. you can see people vandalizing a police car. this is not far from the federal building. other demonstrators were seen damaging a waymo self-driving car in that same area. in a statement about the arrests, sfpd said, quote, individuals are free to peacefully exercise their first amendment rights, and we have developed an interagency plan to protect public safety. in that scenario, violence, property destruction and other criminal activity will never be tolerated. >> our time is now 535. hundreds of people gathered in oakland's jack london square for a community inauguration of mayor barbara lee. this was a ceremonial event. it gave residents a chance to welcome mayor lee to her new job. the

mayor says she looks forward to working with constituents to help improve oakland. she also said she is committing to making public safety a priority. >> business, community and government. each of us has to play a part in making sure that every oaklander feels safe on their own block, each and every single day. and safety is an economic development issue, and it's something that we all want, regardless of where we live. >> mayor lee also said her office is relaunching a youth employment program, just in time to help students find summer jobs. >> the pool for candidates in the race for the next governor of california is growing. ryan tillman is a police officer in southern california. at a launch party in orange county, he spoke about how to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community. tillman is a first time candidate running as an independent. >> i've been a police officer

for 12 years. i've been a business owner for ten years. i'm a parent. i'm a husband, assistant pastor, and so i have real life experience dealing with everyday issues. >> newsom's term is up in 2026. he will term out and cannot run again. nearly 20 people have declared themselves as candidates to replace him. >> our time now 537. one person is in jail now after police shut down a large sideshow in vallejo over the weekend. more than 250 cars were part of that sideshow saturday night around midnight. the police worked with the chp and the sheriff's department to clear that scene. one person was arrested. the police handed out six misdemeanor citations and they towed away seven cars. >> firefighters were able to contain a grass fire that burned just off highway 87 in san jose. crews were called to a grass fire at kirk park at 4:00 yesterday afternoon. firefighters say they initially had problems getting to the fire and had temporarily had to shut down nearby roads. crews were

able to stop the fire's forward progress just after 5:00. san jose fire says it only spread to about 20 acres. it's still unclear what started the fire, but san jose firefighters say they have seen an increase in grass fires as the weather warms up, including one that started last week near the airport. >> time is now 538. starting today, you won't be able to use charcoal grills and fire pits in certain areas around lake berryessa. the napa county fire department issued an open burn ban in recreational areas, including oak shores and the smittle creek. the ban does not affect nearby residential areas, and propane or gas equipment will still be allowed. fire officials say the north bay is facing an early and prolonged fire season because it's just very dry out there. >> less than ten minutes until the official sunrise and get a

deficit by $2.4 trillion and leave an estimated 11 million people without health insurance. >> our time is now 544. the white house is downplaying reports that former trump adviser elon musk and treasury secretary scott bessent got into a physical altercation. the washington post cited steve bannon, who says musk and bessent argued outside of the oval office over the president's nominee for irs commissioner. that disagreement apparently became physical, with musk reportedly body checking secretary bessent and bessent hitting musk back. the white house press secretary acknowledged they did have a disagreement, but would not call it a fistfight. >> did he actually get physical? was there a fistfight that he body checked the treasury secretary? >> i certainly wouldn't describe it as a fistfight. it was definitely a disagreement. although i was not there, i didn't witness it with my own

554 san francisco firefighters rescued two adults from an apartment fire over the weekend. it started on the sixth floor of a seven story building on jones street, right off market. two people were seriously hurt, but fire officials gave no further details. the fire department says the fire involved a lithium ion battery scooter. well, a fire in san francisco caused a brief evacuation at oracle park just before the giants game. san francisco fire says the flames

started just before 11:00 yesterday morning at a vendor's booth. the fire was ignited by cooking oil. those flames were contained to that booth. no one was hurt. authorities evacuated oracle park, but it did reopen well before the giants game began. and the giants now head to colorado. they'll play the rockies tomorrow. tomorrow night. they swept the atlanta braves during a weekend series at home. the giants defeated the braves 4 to 3 last night in front of a sold out crowd. the final game of that series, mike yastrzemski, was hot. drove in three runs to extend san francisco's winning streak to five games. the giants won the game with only three hits. >> we've been pretty good at that all year. you know, even early on when we were getting a bunch of clutch hits, that was kind of our thing. so only three hits today, but just enough at the right time.

we'll. more protests are expected today in los angeles after clashes erupted between law enforcement and anti ice demonstrators. los angeles police say at least 56 people were arrested in connection to the protests this weekend, and the violence included demonstrators throwing incendiary devices at police officers. one patrolman was hurt when a demonstrator rammed a motorcycle into the police. president trump is accusing governor newsom of allowing the protests to get out of hand, while governor newsom says the president's order to send in 2000 national guard troops into los angeles incited the rioting. governor newsom says california will sue the trump administration for sending in the national guard to l.a. county over the weekend. against those protests, the governor accuses the president of using the protests for political gain. in a letter sent to the president, governor newsom said that there's no need for the

national guard to be deployed in los angeles, and that doing this is a breach of state sovereignty. >> he's acting recklessly. he's acting unlawfully. he's putting people's lives at risk. and it's my job to clean up donald trump's mess because he's making it by the hour. >> governor newsom also said he talked to the president over the weekend by phone. the president has blamed gavin newsom and los angeles mayor karen bass for failing to keep the protests under control. >> broken glass and tagged buildings are what's left behind this morning after protests in san francisco, police say they arrested dozens of people. ktvu james torres in the city's downtown area, with more on last night's demonstrations and james, how they ended as well. but boy, we can see a lot of that behind. >> yeah, we certainly want to be careful what we show you with what's behind me here. because this building all and around ice building that we're standing in front of this morning, that's

where many of the protests were somewhat centered around. it is just tagged all the way around all four walls of this building, all bashing ice. for a lot of these raids that we've seen over the last week, it all prompting a response from mayor daniel lurie saying, while voices should be heard, violence against the city and law enforcement cannot be accepted. we saw dozens of police officers in riot gear lined up to manage the crowds of protesters, and we spoke to some of those people engaged in last night's demonstrations. they tell us ice raids and the national guard response in los angeles were enough to come out and do something. >> i was just so outraged to see the scenes from the last couple of days in los angeles, and i feel like we have to do something here to demonstrate that that is not okay, and that is not okay to treat our neighborhoods and our communities like that. and it's not okay to treat immigrants like that. >> well, this morning we saw contractors working at the chase bank building along samsung.

they replaced large panes of glass that shattered last night. the mayor wanted to make clear it was a group that remained after the peak of the protests that hurt. at least two officers, vandalized vehicles and broke the windows of these local businesses. we even saw damage and graffiti to a waymo car as well as a police squad car. police ended up arresting about 60 people, and there are more demonstrations planned today. that includes a rally at city hall set for 12:00 noon, and a protest tonight at the 24th street and mission bart station. we're live this morning in san francisco. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, james, thank you. time now. 605 president trump's decision to send in the national guard to los angeles is making some bay area lawmakers very nervous. they worry the president can soon call up the national guard to respond to immigration rights demonstrations in the bay area. local leaders strongly criticized the president's decision to send in the guard to

l.a, calling it unprecedented. >> president is seeking to create a reality television theater, risking human lives, risking violence. >> it is clear that this move is designed to inflame and divide. that is the goal to create chaos and inflame and trigger a reaction. >> now, these lawmakers say they share governor newsom's view that sending in national guard to los angeles only increases the chances these protests will turn violent. >> president trump's new travel ban is now in effect. the ban is for countries the white house considers high risk due to alleged terrorist activity. now the countries impacted include afghanistan, iran, libya, somalia, sudan and yemen. countries facing partial restrictions include venezuela, cuba and laos. it's similar to a move during president trump's first term. critics then and now are calling the move

discriminatory. the president says it's about national security. >> specifically. you'll remember famously that he called it then a muslim travel ban. and the focus was really religious oriented. this round, i don't see him really having any issues with this travel ban taking effect or staying in in place for the long run. >> the white house says countries on the list were chosen for either terrorist activity, weak or hostile governments, or high rates of people who overstayed their visas. several civil rights groups have already vowed to challenge the ban in court. >> our time now 607. oakland police made an arrest in connection with a deadly hit and run crash on may the 4th. the alameda county da charged 61 year old james smith with vehicular manslaughter after oakland police say he left the scene of a crash. investigators say smith crashed his car into 49 year-old elmo ballard near 18th street and san pablo avenue, pinning ballard and his

wheelchair beneath the car. ballard later died at the hospital. >> san francisco firefighters have some advice for anyone hiking along the city's bluffs and cliffs. this comes after a number of people had to be rescued in the last week, including two people who had to be helped up a cliff on saturday. fire crews say hikers should stay on the trails and stay off the rocks. >> well, today, the national weather service warns everybody watch out for those sneaker waves and rip currents along the beaches here in the bay area. the advisory covers most of the bay area coastline as well. forecasters say those swells could push the waves up to seven feet along parts of the coast. now, if you plan to go to the beach today, swim near a lifeguard and never you've heard pam say it. never turn your back to the water. >> no. and i love the ocean. >> yeah. >> i know, and i love going in the ocean. but i have a very high respect for you. never

number. >> our time is now 613. more than 120 public health groups, labor unions and religious organizations from all over the state are demanding that governor newsom reverse the plans to cut medi-cal. they sent an open letter to the governor saying he'll lose their support if he fails to keep that program fully funded. the group says governor newsom's proposed cuts in his latest budget plan would mean 20% less funding for california health clinics, on top of expected cuts from the federal government to medicaid. the governor is trying to find ways to save money because of california's $68 million deficit. >> the oakland unified school district has almost overcome the impact of its bankruptcy from 20 years ago. but there are new financial issues. the district is about to make its final payment to the state for that $100 million loan back in 2003. but while the district has spent the last five years building a rainy day or emergency backup

fund, usd still facing a large budget deficit. the board is still trying to figure out how to deal with that $60 million deficit for the next year. >> time is now 615. starting on july 1st, colleges can start directly paying their student athletes. a federal judge in oakland officially approved a multibillion dollar settlement. it also creates major changes for the ncaa. each school can now spend up to $20.5 million on their athletes. the salary cap will then increase every year of the decade long deal. the ncaa will also pay almost $2.8 billion to former college athletes who previously were not allowed to receive money. >> that's also going to have to come from its budget without new revenue streams being generated now. it will make more money, like all teams, as a result of college football playoff expansion, but not enough to make up for all of that money that's going to need to be paid

to the athletes. >> now, most of the schools plan to spend their money on players in the top two money generating sports, football and men's basketball. the major conferences like the big ten, the sec and the acc, they're all expected to announce a college sports commission overseeing the terms and enforcing the new rules from this settlement. >> a new study says losing can actually be helpful for young athletes who are involved in highly competitive sports. sports a researcher at texas a&m university found coaches and parents should avoid a win at all cost approach to youth sports. her study concluded the often painful experience of losing in baseball, football or other sports can actually help a child overcome adversity later in life. >> sport gives us that safe context to practice making mistakes, to practice being wrong. and we want. that's the hardest thing to do as a parent is to see your kid fail. but

that's what we want, guys, because we're practicing what it means to try again and try again in advance beyond your own skill level. >> the research also found losing in sports reminds young people that life is filled with disappointments, and things don't always go as planned. that is hard as a parent is hard, right? you want to run in and rescue. but i tell you, my girls definitely learned more from things that didn't go their way. right? we all learn from adversity or we didn't lose. we didn't win. >> yeah. >> sal's a coach and has younger athletes in his home right now, so i know you probably have nice coaching moments, both as a coach and as a parent. when things don't go their way, they lose. >> we've lost pam. yeah. >> you're not undefeated. >> one of my teams did go undefeated this year, but they lost in the playoffs. and you know it is what it is you. it's hard. these young athletes have to learn. so there you go. and

occupancy housing, and valeria suarez for helping young people develop professional work experience through the dream sf fellowship. the event will take place at city hall at 530 tonight. an emotional event was held in boulder, colorado over the weekend, just a week after an attack on pro-israeli protesters. people came out to the boulder jewish festival to celebrate jewish culture and show support for the victims of the attack. crowds also gathered to walk in solidarity with the hostages, who are still being held in gaza. the walk was in the same place where a group demonstrating for those hostages was attacked with molotov cocktails. the man accused in the attack now faces more than 100 charges, including attempted murder and hate crimes. >> the jewish festival is something i always try to come to and this year especially i think was very important because of what happened last sunday. >> my friends, my jewish friends and the jewish community here in colorado and the community in israel. i want them to know that they are loved and that we are

here. >> there wasn't a credible threat to the event, but there was a heavy law enforcement presence. boulder police say no arrests were made. an increase in anti-semitic attacks nationwide is prompting solidarity walks in the bay area for both israel and gaza. in los gatos, there was a solidarity walk for the people injured in last week's attack in colorado. across the bay, local religious and advocacy groups held a separate 22 mile interfaith march from alameda to berkeley calling for peace in gaza. the 22 mile route was chosen to mirror the distance between rafah and gaza city. >> we are walking in solidarity with the palestinian right of return to their homes, the right of people to remain and to live in safety. >> i wanted to also elevate the voices of many in our jewish community that do not feel safe going to synagogue, jewish

community centers, other jewish institutions, or even participate in this walk today. >> we ppe. >> participants in east bay are also using the march to demand a ceasefire, and are calling on u.s. leaders to start an arms embargo. israeli forces have stopped humanitarian aid boat bound for gaza and detained the activists on board. the group included well-known activist greta thunberg. this video from israel's military shows personnel handing out food and water to the activists. they were part of a voyage protesting israel's ongoing military campaign in gaza and its restrictions on aid. israel says it sent the boat to israeli shores and ordered the activists to return home. israel says it will send the aid to gaza through normal channels, ushering in a new era in oakland leadership. the special ceremony celebrating mayor barbara lee's inauguration and her- [music] promises for oakland.

the cats restaurant. it was slow southbound and northbound, so things might get better now that things now that the roadway is open, which is good because it was getting a little bit slow in that area. let's check in on the bay bridge. we like to do that. it's backed up all the way out to the maze and the metering lights are on. nothing major there. and if you're driving in oakland right now, 880 and 580, you're still off to a good start. 632 let's get back to the headlines. >> thank you sal. tensions remain high in los angeles this morning. >> law enforcement bracing for even more anti ice protests. ktvu jesse gary is in the studio with us now with the new developments on those demonstrations. eric. >> jesse. pam, good morning to you. a short time ago, lapd canceling its tactical alert that was issued 12 hours prior la metro, the light and bus rail service that will resume this morning in downtown los angeles, which remains under an unlawful

assembly area or. sunday. protesters clashed violently with police and soldiers in and around downtown la. this came after president donald trump saturday, deploying 300 national guardsmen and women to three different sites in the la metro to protect federal property and personnel and quell protests that escalated into violence. autonomous vehicles have been set ablaze, police and chp equipment vandalized and some freeways blocked. so far, almost 60 people have been arrested during three days of protests over ice raids to remove undocumented migrants in socal. >> no matter where you stand, you know, i don't think anybody wants to see families ripped apart, right? >> all of us. we have family and it's really sad. i don't have words. >> california governor gavin newsom and l.a. mayor karen bass both saying they're suing the trump administration over the deployment of the national guard. both say it's something

they did not request and do not want. of course, we're going to keep an eye on the situation down south. join you again in the next hour. dave. pam. >> all right. jesse. thank you. our time now. 6.33 more protests are expected today around the bay area, calling for an end to those immigration raids by the trump administration in san francisco. people will gather at noon today at the california state building on golden gate avenue. and then tonight at 6 p.m. a from la to the bay. protests will be held at 24th and at the 24th and mission bart plaza in oakland. a gathering is planned at 6 p.m. at the fruitvale plaza. and in san jose, people will be gathering at city hall at 430 in the afternoon on santa clara street. >> police say 60 people were arrested in san francisco last night following protests in support of the- [applause] demonstrators in los angeles.

this was the scene on sansome and jackson, near the ice building in the financial district. the protest started peacefully, but police say at about 7:00 some people got aggressive and shattered office building windows and vandalized muni busses. police declared an unlawful assembly to break up the crowd, and the arrests happened after some people refused to leave protests. protesters we spoke to say they wanted this to be a peaceful demonstration. >> i was just so outraged to see the scenes from the last couple of days in los angeles, and i feel like we have to do something here to demonstrate that that is not okay, and that is not okay to treat our neighborhoods and our communities like that. and it's not okay to treat immigrants like that. >> any human in the united states has fourth and 14th amendment rights to due process. these rights are getting trampled on. >> at one point, bart service at

the embarcadero was closed as a small group of demonstrators marched through downtown. sfpd says three officers were hurt. one was taken to the hospital. police say they recovered one gun at the scene. here's some more video from the moments the protests got more chaotic. you can see people vandalizing a police car. this is not far from the federal building. other demonstrators were seen damaging a waymo self-driving car in that same area. >> one person is in jail now after a large sideshow in vallejo was shut down by police over the weekend, more than 250 cars were part of a sideshow. saturday, around midnight, the police worked with the chp and the sheriff's department to clear that scene. one person was arrested. police handed out six misdemeanor citations and they towed away seven cars. >> well, hundreds of people gathered at jack london square for a community inauguration of mayor barbara lee. this was a ceremonial event giving people a chance to welcome mayor lee to

her new role. the mayor said she is looking forward to working with her constituents to help improve oakland. in her address, mayor lee said she is committed to prioritizing public safety. >> business, community and government. each of us has to play a part in making sure that every oaklander feels safe on their own block each and every single day. and safety is an economic development issue, and it's something that we all want, regardless of where we live. >> the mayor also said her office is relaunching a youth employment program, just in time to help students find summer jobs. >> all right. we wish them well. time now. 637. and we wish you well in the morning commute. sal, what's happening on the roads now? >> well, right now it's getting busier. dave and pam on 80 westbound out of el sobrante into richmond. and also on the richmond bridge approach. this

is all very typical of what we see. also, highway four is getting busier on the drive from pittsburgh all the way over to concord. again, pretty typical stuff that we see on a regular weekday morning. bay bridge backed up to the maze, gets a little bit better once on the span, and no problems in oakland yet on interstate 880 or 580. we hope it stays that way. south bay commute has been relatively uneventful. we get a crash on 17 in los gatos. there still some slowing southbound near the cats, but that should be dissipating soon. all the lanes are open. 638 let's find out about today's weather. here's rosemary. >> yes, sal. a very typical pattern in place for early june here as well. a live look again over the cloud cover and over mount diablo, where the blue sky up above. at this point, sun will set at 831. and we have a nice day coming our way. but again, when we have that classic setup, low clouds at the coast and in the 60s, which means it

are some of the stories we're following this morning? president trump's new travel ban are in effect. the new travel ban rejects future visa applications from 12 mainly african and middle eastern countries. now in haiti, which is one of the countries on that list, travelers made last minute bookings trying to get to the u.s. before the ban went into effect. legal experts expect the

travel ban to be challenged in court. a u.s. district court judge approved the settlement in the house versus ncaa case, making revenue sharing legal in college sports. that means that schools can now pay their athletes directly along with their scholarships. the schools will have a cap of about $20 million if they can pay out for this coming school year. and starting today, charcoal grills and fire pits will be banned in certain areas around lake berryessa. napa county fire officials issued an open burn ban in recreational sites, including oak shores and smittle creek. the ban does not affect nearby residential areas and propane or gas equipment will still be allowed. fire officials say the north bay is facing an early and prolonged fire season because of very dry conditions. >> firefighters rescued two

adults from an apartment fire in san francisco over the weekend. the fire started on the sixth floor of a seven story building on jones street, just off market. firefighters say two people were seriously injured, but they did not release any other information. the fire department says the fire involved a lithium ion battery from a scooter. >> well, the white house is downplaying reports that former trump adviser elon musk and treasury secretary scott bessent got into a physical altercation. the washington post cited steve bannon, a friend of the president, who says the two men argued outside the oval office over the president's nominee for the irs commissioner. that disagreement apparently became physical, with elon musk reportedly body checking secretary bessent and bessent hitting musk back. the white house press secretary acknowledged that they had a disagreement, but said wouldn't call it a fistfight. >> did he actually get physical? was there a fistfight that he

body checked the treasury secretary? >> i certainly wouldn't describe it as a fistfight. it was definitely a disagreement. although i was not there, i didn't witness it with my own eyes. i heard about it through secondhand reporting. but again, we've moved on from that. >> it wasn't long after that incident that elon musk said he was stepping down from his role in washington. >> republicans on capitol hill are trying to convince holdouts to get behind president trump's spending bill. right now, there is a handful of republican senators who oppose the bill. some say it doesn't go far enough to cut spending. others point out the proposal adds to the national debt. last week, a report from the congressional budget office estimated the bill would increase the national deficit by $2.4 trillion and leave an estimated 11 million people without health insurance. >> well, the apple worldwide developers conference starts today at apple park in cupertino. developers and users will be looking at some of the

changes coming to apple's software products during the year. that could include updates to apple's ai software, and apple could reportedly rename its operating systems to reflect the release year rather than the version number. however, some tech experts say, unlike last year, they're not expecting any major announcements. >> more americans are struggling to keep up with their buy now, pay later loans. those programs let consumers split a purchase into 3 or 4 smaller payments, usually without interest. but reports from financial services companies such as lendingtree and bankrate show many consumers signed up for these programs, but then overextended themselves and are now behind on those payments. consumer debt is now at a record high $18.2 trillion. xbox announced it will launch two new handheld devices just before the holiday season. microsoft says the popular game roblox will be available on all the devices, and that's a first

head to colorado. they'll play the rockies after sweeping the atlanta braves during a weekend series at home. the giants beat the braves 4 to 3, in front of a sold out crowd at oracle park, the final game of that series. mike yastrzemski drove in three runs to extend the giants winning streak to five games. the giants, believe it or not, only had three hits. >> we've been pretty good at that all year. you know, even early on when we were getting a bunch of clutch hits, that was kind of our thing. so only three hits today, but just enough at the right time. >> now the giants are just one game behind the first place dodgers in the national league west. they're tied with the padres in second place. there was a fire at oracle park that caused a brief evacuation before the giants game. the fire department says it started just before 11:00 yesterday morning at a vendor's booth. the fire was set off by cooking oil. the

flames were contained to that vendor's booth. no one was hurt. authorities evacuated oracle park, but it reopened well before the giants game began. well, tennis fans were treated to a thriller on clay during the french open finals. spain's carlos alcaraz successfully defended his title against italy's jannik sinner. sinner won the first two sets, but alcaraz clawed back into the game, forcing a fifth set, and then dominated the breaker to take home the trophy. look at him. it was the longest french open final ever. it lasted almost 5.5 hours. alcaraz now has five grand slam titles under his belt, and he's only 22 years old. well, and an american, coco gauff, won her first french open over the weekend. the 21 year old defeated the world's top ranked player. aryna sabalenka,

on the clay court in paris. now, coco gauff is the first american to win the french open since serena williams did it back in 2015. she's also the youngest american female to win the french open since venus. serena did it in 2002. well, san francisco native darren criss won his first tony awards last night. he's 38 years old, won the best actor award for his performance in the sci fi tinged maybe happy ending, a musical about two robots navigating love in the not so distant future. criss was born in san francisco, graduated from saint ignatius high school in 2005. he rose to fame on the musical tv series glee. maybe happy ending took home six tony awards, including the best musical at the 2025 tony awards. well, oakland has crowned its youngest youth poet

laureate. 14 years old kale duenas, lara is a sophomore at san francisco university high school. he's a second generation mexican american. he's a dancer and an advocate for social justice. the award was announced on friday during a live event by oakland, where all seven finalists perform. times now 658. the final day of the san mateo county fair wrapped up last night.
