getting into the afternoon. temperatures will range from low 60s at the coast to low 80s inland, and only minor changes coming our way for dad's day. a better look at the weekend and what we can expect in the extended forecast coming up. >> thank you rosemary. hundreds of demonstrations are planned and some taking place already across the nation. called the no kings in america movement. ktvu tory gaines joins us live with more on what's planned for today here in the bay area. tory. >> good morning ali. it's a day of demonstrations across the country, including right here in the bay area. we've been covering demonstrations that popped up in solidarity with the anti ice protests in los angeles all week. today, those demonstrations will grow in size and scale in cities from coast to coast. take a look. this map shared on the website no kings.org, shows that these protests will be in hundreds of cities across the u.s. you can see dozens of those will be here in the golden state. now, folks across the bay area gathered this week together to prepare for today's demonstrations. organizers from san francisco to

san jose are ready to join in on the effort. >> and make clear that it's not just some minor quibbles. it's not just people being normally upset at politics. it's that there is more going on, and we need to make everyone's voices heard in a safe way. >> now, many of the folks we spoke to this week shared messages of fear and concern after watching protesters clash with law enforcement in los angeles over the past week. >> i feel proud of the people doing it. i feel scared about the authoritarianism that's blatantly being showed. and i feel sad for the people who were deployed and really had nothing to do. nowhere to go, nowhere to sleep. so yeah. and it's just it's scary. everything's scary. >> now, president trump's birthday celebrations and

military parade will be kicking off in the coming hours. we'll bring you live looks from washington, dc later this morning. ali. >> thank you. well, also happening this morning. an immigrant rights group is holding what it calls an emergency mobilization outside the immigration and customs enforcement office in san francisco. now, the group says many migrant families unexpectedly received notice that they have to appear in immigration court today or face an infraction in the group. says a saturday summons to the courthouse is highly unusual. they believe there may be a large number of people detained at that ice office this morning. they're calling on supporters to join them to protest a possible arrest. they are gathering at 7:00, and they want to remind people that the no kings demonstrations are scheduled for later in the day. more chp officers have been deployed by the state of california in anticipation of planned protests. today, governor newsom says all eight of the chp special response teams were activated throughout the state. that's an extra 700 chp officers. the governor says the

chp role will be to help local governments manage protests and demonstrations, and says that laws against looting, vandalism and destruction of property will be strictly enforced. >> well, this morning, about 200 u.s. marines are standing guard at a federal building in los angeles. shortly after they arrived yesterday, they did detain a man who walked onto the property and reportedly did not hear their commands to stop. that brief detention marks the first time that military service members have detained a civilian since they were deployed to l.a. the man who was detained has been released without any charges. national guard troops remain in the city as a legal battle over their deployment works its way through the courts. a nightly curfew from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. is still in effect for a square mile stretch of downtown la until further notice. president trump's military parade in washington, d.c, is set to begin at 330 this afternoon. west coast time and weather forecasters are still warning about heavy rain and thunderstorms that could disrupt

this big event on the streets of the nation's capital. at this point, there are no plans to cancel or reschedule the parade, which is expected to attract about 200,000 people. and president trump is confident the $45 million parade will go on as scheduled. >> the weather is okay, but actually, if it's not, that brings you good luck. that's okay too. doesn't matter. it doesn't affect the tanks at all. it doesn't affect the soldiers. >> this evening's parade in the heart of the nation's capital is scheduled to include army tanks, thousands of soldiers and flyovers in a show of u.s. military might. it is to celebrate the army's 250th anniversary. and it also coincides with president trump's 79th birthday. >> the trump administration has reportedly directed ice to pause its enforcement operations in the hospitality, restaurant and agriculture industries. that's according to the new york times, which cites an internal memo from a senior ice official telling agents to hold off

investigating places like hotels, restaurants, farms and meatpacking plants. the report comes one day after president trump said he wanted to make adjustments to his immigration policies in those industries. now, in the wake of that report, we're hearing from people in the farming industry who are fearful the next round of ice operations could target them or a family member. ktvu jesse gary has the story from half moon bay. >> just out of view of highway one traffic in half moon bay. the people who helped feed america are hard at work. for many, it is a work environment that is feeling increasingly hostile. >> we are all hard working latinos working these fields, and it's very sad for the children, for example, that perhaps they may have been born in this country, their parents or family members might not be documented. >> what happened? >> the trump administration's

continued nationwide crackdown of undocumented migrants has led to arrests and uncertainty. half moon bay officials say their partners report fewer people are accessing social services out of fear they could be targeted. >> folks who normally attend some of our nonprofit partners to seek assistance and services as far as food, childcare, housing assistance, they've been, there's been a decline in attendance. >> one of those nonprofits is, alas. its managers say they're doing outreach five days a week in an attempt to keep the calm and increase awareness of what is and is not legal. >> we've been hosting several know your rights trainings within our community, distributing the read know your rights card. >> president donald trump signaling an easing of strict immigration enforcement for farm and hotel workers. >> our farmers are being hurt badly by, you know, they have very good workers. they've worked for them for 20 years. they they're not citizens, but

they've turned out to be, you know, great. and we're going to have to do something about that. we can't take farmers and take all their people and send them back because they don't have maybe what they're supposed to have, maybe not. >> for felix torres, who came into the country due to amnesty under president reagan and is now living under president trump, there is hope. the ice raids and the mood of the country will take a different approach. >> what we are asking for right now of the current president is to touch his heart, feel for our community that is hurting and put an end to these ice raids and separation of these hardworking families. >> president trump says there could be a policy statement coming about that in the coming days. some people here say it can't come soon enough. in half moon bay, jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. >> we are following overnight developments in the growing military crisis in the middle

east, both israel and iran, carrying out the latest wave of deadly attacks early this morning. in the most intense fighting between these two countries in decades. the israeli military says iranian missiles have now killed at least three people and injured dozens of others all across israel. israeli strikes have killed more than 70 people in iran, including several of tehran's top military leaders and nuclear scientists. the united nations says both sides are ignoring international pleas to end the fighting. well, the growing conflict in the middle east is now hitting home for a lot of people right here in the bay area. many local religious and community leaders say the fighting between israel and iran is dramatically raising tensions in this region. the council on american islamic relations is among the bay area groups that is strongly condemning israel's attack on iran, fearing that it could soon lead to an all out war. >> this is one more example of

unprovoked israeli violence targeting civilians, violating international law and using american taxpayer dollars to do so. >> many local religious leaders say the fighting between israel and iran is also creating a very tense situation for members of the bay area's jewish community. >> very difficult to be jewish in the bay area right now, people feel very alone. we have to walk outside and see graffiti. we're often kicked out of social groups. there are people who have decided that they can't be our friends anymore. >> the crisis in the middle east is also raising concerns about an increase in anti-semitism and islamophobia. here in the bay area. >> a taxi flips over on its roof in san francisco's civic center. what we're finding out about this crash and how both people inside walked away unharmed. >> and another gray whale has been found dead in the east bay, and experts are searching for answers. the latest in a

fire broke out friday afternoon near linda vista lane in rural vacaville. at last check, the fire had burned about 110 acres and was 30% contained. cal fire firefighters are still at the scene of the fire. so far, there's no word on how it started. police in tiburon are warning that fake guns can have real consequences. two college students were pulled over after a 911 call reported reckless driving and a suspected firearm. officers found four b-b guns in that vehicle that looked like real weapons, along with alcohol, a fake id and drugs. the teens handed over the bb guns for destruction. >> well, dozens of people gathered in the east bay for a vigil to remember the victims of thursday's tragic air india plane crash. fremont is home to a large number of people from india or of indian descent. vigil organizers provided a peaceful environment for community members there to pray and mourn at the central park performance pavilion. ktvu is, amber lee tells us. some people

that went to the vigil say they fly on that same airline when they travel. >> it's very close, right? it's just it's something that we take for granted all the time. like flying in general, we always put our faith in other people, and the fact that it happened in the, in the, in the airport that i fly into all the time, my hearts just go out to everyone that was on board and also their family as well. >> 241 people were killed on board and others on the ground, but one man did miraculously survive. the cause of that crash is under investigation. >> well, there are renewed concerns this morning about the number of dead whales that have washed up on the shore across the bay area. it comes after another whale carcass was spotted in richmond. ktvu john shark reports. >> i was surprised because it's really low water there. >> ktvu viewer david ong alerting us to this dead whale at point isabel in richmond early friday morning. it was found on a rocky area just feet

away from the water. >> makes me think about life cycle. makes me think about the sadness of what i perceive to be an unfortunate death here. >> according to the sausalito based marine mammal center, the dead whale was actually discovered by officials on thursday. they've identified it as a subadult gray whale. >> wow. i've never seen a whale this close, let alone a deceased whale up on the. this is. i'm in shock. i don't even know how to really react. it's just like, holy moly, what's going on here? >> at this point, it's unclear how the whale died. >> will be conducting an animal autopsy or a necropsy. and what we need to first do is get the whale towed to a safe location where our team can conduct the autopsy on it. >> this latest death only fueling questions about why nearly two dozen whales have been found dead in our area just

since the start of 2025. >> gray whales can live for a long time, and we want to understand whether this is being caused by natural things or if there are other impacts to the gray whales. >> now, the whale is expected to be towed from this area on saturday. it will then be moved to another location where that necropsy is expected to be done early next week in richmond. i'm john quinn, ktvu, fox two news. >> really is sad what we've seen here. the most dead whales in about 25 years. okay, let's turn things over now to rosemary oroczo. actually, rosemary, on my way in, i could see some sun today, which was a little unusual for. >> me as well. heather, good morning to you. and we are well looking at a cloudy start to the day, but definitely seeing more blue sky over parts of the bay area this morning. and with that, temperatures are running just a little bit cooler when we get the clear skies during the overnight hours. helps to release some of that heat that

today, stanford school of medicine will hold its graduation. the keynote speaker is doctor brian lin, a stanford primary care doctor. he's been teaching a class about his experience battling stage four lung cancer. >> i told the students in the class, you know, even though this sucks, i would not wish cancer on anyone, right? you know, 99.99% of my life has been awesome. you know, this has just been 0.01% of my life, or even less. but, you know, in the time i have remaining, i want to give back. i want to improve things. i want to make the world better for my kids. >> doctor lin, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed last may and

>> tori. thank you. waymo says it is taking heightened security measures ahead of those protests. this comes after several waymo vehicles were vandalized and vandalized, even set on fire during previous protests last weekend in san francisco and los angeles. the self-driving car company is adjusting the number of cars that will be in service, along with where the cars will operate. waymo says they always assess local events that might impact service. >> the fbi is now looking for two more people who they claim assaulted federal officers during tuesday's protest outside an immigration courthouse in concord. they shared these two images of the suspects on social media. they were both wearing masks. the fbi says the two people were wanted for assault and theft of government property. the fbi also offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of this woman, who they say assaulted an fbi officer in concord and may have stolen an officer's badge. on tuesday, ice agents took at least four people into custody

outside the concord immigration courthouse as they had appeared for their scheduled immigration hearings. about 100 protesters tried to prevent authorities from taking one man away. >> well, the first fifa world cup games begin today in miami. yet there are concerns that fans may stay away out of fear of being detained or even deported. so earlier this week, u.s. customs and border protection shared on its facebook page that it will be, quote, suited and booted, ready to provide security at miami's hard rock stadium today. well, that prompted backlash online and fears that fans will stay away, given the current climate on immigration enforcement. according to the new york times, the cbp deleted that post after after a conversation with fifa. >> san francisco's sold out musical luigi the musical is adding more shows after all 5th june dates sold out weeks ago, a performance has been added next month, july 13th at the independent theater. it's a venue that's five times larger

than where the music is currently musical is currently playing. the show follows luigi mangione, the 27 year old suspect in the murder of united health care ceo brian thompson as he awaits trial. now, the satirical musical features luigi alongside celebrity inmates like diddy and sam bankman-fried. the creators of the musical says say it does not glorify the crime. mangione is accused of and does not portray him as a hero. a jury has convicted a man charged in a hit and run crash in san francisco that left two people seriously injured. 68 year old stephen kernan was convicted of reckless driving and fleeing the scene of a crash. prosecutors. prosecutors say he hit a man in the crosswalk at 23rd and mission streets in san francisco, then struck another person who was getting off a muni bus. this was back in february of 2020. one victim suffered the loss of both legs. investigators say good samaritans helped save the lives of both of the victims. sentencing is scheduled for july 16th.

>> well, ktvu has now obtained the extended version of the chp footage showing the sequence of events that led up to a chase and crash that killed a beloved high school teacher in oakland. and it confirms the agency's claim that no officers were actively chasing the suspect at the time of the crash. but as ktvu henry lee tells us, critics say the chp should not be chasing drivers on city streets in the first place. >> he's running northbound on 12th avenue, running northbound on 12th avenue. right now. blue jeans looks like long brown hair. i got chp about to go hands on with one. >> chp video obtained by ktvu provides the clearest timeline yet about what led up to the crash that killed castlemont high teacher, marvin boomer. dashcam footage shows a chp cruiser catching up with an infiniti that had just crashed into a minivan at east 21st street and park boulevard on may 28th. the suspect takes off and the chp car follows, but the chp says officers on the ground then stopped chasing the suspect. footage from a chp plane

confirms no officers were directly behind the infiniti when it crashed blocks away at east 21st street and 12th avenue, killing boomer and injuring his girlfriend. community advocates have blasted the chp account, accusing officers of actively chasing the suspect at the time of the crash. >> in the case of marvin boomer, they were there 10s after the crash happened. so if you weren't chasing him, then how were you there that fast? it's a lie. >> in fact, the cruiser that had been behind the infiniti arrived at a full 25 seconds after the crash, which sheared off a hydrant that hit the teacher. body cam video shows officers running after the suspect with a chp cruiser also in pursuit. >> it wasn't me. shut the #### up! that wasn't me. >> the suspect, 18 year old eric hernandez garcia, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, evading and hit and run. the two crashes along east 21st happened after chp was involved in an on again, off again chase of the suspect, who was driving an infiniti that previously evaded alameda county sheriff's deputies. critics say

the chp should not be chasing suspects over a car. the tragedy has reinvigorated a long standing debate. to chase or not to chase. >> it raises a legal question, a moral question. and those are do the police do enough or do they do too much? >> ktvu legal analyst michael cardoza says tragedies do occur despite best intentions by law enforcement. >> so do we need jerk to that and completely tell the highway patrol, stay off our streets. i guarantee you what will happen is you're going to embolden the criminals. >> the chp again declined to comment, citing the threat of litigation in this deadly crash in oakland. henry lee ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. spring skiing is wrapping up, and this weekend is the last chance to hit the slopes at mammoth mountain. how? the resort is closing out one of california's longest seasons. >> and after 67 years, the smart train is back in windsor with plans to roll even farther

but can they turn it up in the fourth? - bang! - the fans are going crazy! no dishwasher, no laundry, no large appliances. we are witnessing flexing perfection. another big win for team california. the power is ours. all right. thank you for joining us on this saturday morning. i want to take a moment now to check some of the top stories. the military parade to celebrate the army's 250th anniversary is set to begin in washington, d.c, around 330 this afternoon. west coast time and weather forecasters are still warning about heavy rain and thunderstorms that could disrupt this big event on the streets of the nation's capital. at this point, there are no plans to cancel or reschedule the parade, which is expected to attract 200,000 people. it also coincides with president trump's 79th birthday. both israel and iran are carrying out the latest wave of deadly attacks early

this morning. in the most intense fighting between these two countries in decades. the israeli military says iranian missiles have now killed at least three people and injured dozens of others all across israel. israeli strikes have killed more than 70 people in iran, including several of tehran's top military leaders and nuclear scientists. and the trump administration gave the personal data of millions of people enrolled in medicaid, including their immigration status, to the department of homeland security. names, addresses and other information in several states, including california, was shared with the federal agency. reports say medicaid officials attempted to block the move over legal and ethical concerns, but health secretary robert f kennedy jr ordered the data transfer to go through. >> a federal judge blocked an executive order by the president that would have required proof of citizenship. when you register to vote, noncitizens are already barred from voting in federal elections, but the

order had required election officials to only accept mailed ballots received by election day and withhold federal election funding from states that don't comply. the judge ruled that the constitution does not grant the president any specific powers on elections. >> the santa clara county board of supervisors is expected to vote next week on whether to support state legislation that would allow counties to consider an income tax ballot measure. the county says about 30% of its revenue comes from the federal government. but with deep cuts being actively considered in washington, d.c, county officials say they need to explore other options. currently, under state law, counties are unable to even consider adopting a local income tax. the income tax would only apply to incomes of $1 million or more. >> well, a grand opening five years in the making. the long awaited new smart commuter train now pulling into the town of windsor. and as ktvu tom vacar

reports, the smart train's recent success comes at a time when mass transit is struggling across the nation. >> all aboard! next stop healdsburg and cloverdale. >> under a hot sun in the sonoma town of windsor, some 700 townsfolk and dignitaries gathered to officially welcome smart train at the system's 14th station, leaving only healdsburg and cloverdale to the north to be completed. >> 67 years and 67 years since the last passenger train came to windsor. >> smart train is an unqualified success. >> smart is at 160% of its ridership pre-pandemic. that's unheard of. across california. >> it means cleaner air for our kids and fewer cars on the road. it means enhanced mobility and quality of life. >> on weekdays, like at the other stations from 4:30 a.m. to just after 10 p.m, 21 trains

will arrive and 21 will depart weekends. eight trains each day, 7 a.m. until just after 9 p.m. it's. >> transportation for free if you're under 18 or over 65. it's inexpensive if you're in between those ages. >> what do townsfolk and the regular riders along the line think? >> i've already been on the train once, and it's great. it's. i bet it's really going to boost our economy here in windsor and a lot more tourist attraction. >> especially when it once it goes up to healdsburg, you're going to have a lot of wine people coming up here and it's just going to be a zoo. it's going to be great. >> i used to volunteer and get petitions signed to get the smart train in to sonoma and marin. i'm so happy for the train. >> people are going to love it actually, because windsor hasn't seen a train like a long, long, long, long, very long time. >> when people find out how cool of a town windsor is, they're going to come. >> what all of this means far

beyond the train station is an opportunity for more tourism, and an opportunity for more people to move north, should they choose to. in effect, it is a new connection to the bay area. tom vacar ktvu, fox two news. >> well, the spring ski season is coming to a close at mammoth mountain, just south of yosemite in the southern sierra. this is the last weekend that skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes before the resort wraps up another season. this sunday, there will be free goodies, giveaways, and an end of season party, along with some great conditions for skiers at the resort in mono county. again, that's today and tomorrow for the final weekend. >> we have three chairlifts open with terrain from top to bottom and about ten runs in operation. and in. in conjunction with that, we're also kicking off all of our summer activities. >> a spokesperson for mammoth mountain says this weekend ends one of the longest ski and snowboard seasons ever in

california. >> yeah, i regret that i did not get up to go skiing at all this year. did you? >> oh, we go all the time. my son loves you. it's one of his favorite things to do. i married into a ski family, had never skied before. i was 21 years old, and then i started dating my now husband, who was growing up, grew up a skier, ski from the time he could walk, basically. so now it's a part of our family. family every winter. >> i love that i usually get up there at least once a year, but i think given my knee, my knee injury, that kind of prohibited me and i didn't want to. >> just sit. you don't want to risk it. yeah. no. >> anyway. but but also remember that there are a lot of spring activities to do up in the mountains. so head up there for those. let's go and bring in rosemary now for a check on your forecast. a little closer to home. >> yes, we are. >> looking at a pleasant weekend, ladies and i agree the sierra beautiful any time of year. we do have the blue skies. from this vantage point. you can see the dry conditions down

below. this very mild pattern does help to offset that fire danger just a little bit. we will get into some warmer weather. it looks like it comes on the very tail end of spring. and i'll show you that here. in the extended forecast for the weekend, we continue with the onshore breeze. we've got partly cloudy skies to start the day. we also have high clouds that are rolling across the bay area, and will continue to do so for today as well as tomorrow. so in the way of that low cloud cover, not as much this morning, but high clouds will be joining us. here's a look at the futurecast and it shows you what i'm talking about. you kind of see them come off the pacific and stream across the bay area into the evening hours. partly cloudy skies along the coastline, and we will see the high clouds return by tomorrow morning. sunday morning partly cloudy, low cloud cover as well as high clouds overhead and then into the afternoon. a mix of plenty of sunshine and just a little

happening today. the san francisco unicorns will go for their second straight win at the oakland coliseum. it's part of the first round of major league cricket that is happening at the oakland coliseum. about 12,000 people filled the coliseum thursday night to watch the unicorns beat the washington freedom by 123 runs. the star of the match was finn allen. he scored 151 runs for the team, including a record 19 sixes. now, that's similar to a home run in baseball, but it is worth six runs instead of just one. well. >> tomorrow is the start of a week long celebration of san francisco's tenderloin

neighborhood. the celebration will highlight the history, culture, and community that make the tenderloin such a dynamic part of the city. and we spoke with one of the organizers yesterday on the floor, and he says, i love tenderloin features more than a dozen free events all throughout next week to showcase local art, amazing food and unique small businesses. >> a lot of times there's a negative perception, a negative light that's drawn to the tenderloin. when you hear the name. and what we really want to do is take the time to change that narrative and celebrate the things that are working, celebrate, you know, the things that are being very successful here in the tenderloin. >> i love tenderloin, that celebration. it runs through saturday, june 21st. again, it kicks off tomorrow. >> and don't forget the north beach festival, also happening today in san francisco. this is the 71st year for this event, and it will feature more than 200 vendors along with beer gardens, live music, art and italian street painting. this festival begins at 11:00, ends at seven in the evening at the

city's historic north beach neighborhood, along grant avenue and columbus avenue. it is a free event for all ages. there will be a kid friendly zone with some lego building, bubble making, and a chalk zone. well, from the boardwalk to the beaches, summer hiring is in full swing, but it turns out fewer teenagers may be looking for employment this season. fox's jeff flock explains why. >> we're walking the boards here at the world famous morey's piers in wildwood, new jersey. they hire more than 1500 part time workers in the summer, and these days, it's kind of hard to find teens to work at a summer job. i've got denise, who's in charge of finding all those teens to work. you having trouble this summer? we put the numbers up. fewer teens each summer seem to want a summer job. how are you doing? >> we're doing okay. it does. it is trending downwards. it's always challenging for us. but so far this year, we're hanging in there. >> yeah. gotcha. you take also a lot of people on those international student visas, the

hour with some breaking news. police in minnesota are searching for a gunman who shot two state lawmakers in apparent targeted attacks. those lawmakers spouses were also shot. and there are reports now that one of the state lawmakers has died from the their injuries from this from this attack. now, state senator john hoffman and state representative melissa hortman of minnesota, both lawmakers, are democrats. it's believed the shooter was impersonating a law enforcement officer. a shelter in place order has been put in effect in the area of both of those homes. this is all happening north of minneapolis. excuse me, north of minneapolis. we're going to listen in to the news conference underway right now. >> this is part of the investigation completed. this is rapidly evolving. just occurred a few hours ago, and we're trying to sort it out. we have partners from the fbi, the bca, the hennepin county sheriff's office, and almost every suburban agency in our community helping us with this. so it's very complex and working on it. what i will tell you, when we

did a search of the vehicle, there was a manifesto that identified many lawmakers and other officials. we immediately made alerts to the state who took action on alerting them and providing security where necessary. and that's about. i'll stop there, chief. >> thank you very much. we're going to take one more question. sure. with the bca, can i ask just you use the word targeted. and that's kind of along the lines of. >> wait, wait, where? >> politics. democrats. these are both democratic lawmakers, you said targeted so targeted because they're politicians are targeted with their. >> well, so the question is, is were they targeted. and when i use the term why am i using the term? as chief bruley noted, there was a list of individuals and the individuals that were targeted in this situation were on that list. and so when we're looking at that, as chief really said, it's far too early in the investigation to be able to provide information. but i do think we'll be in a position where we'll be able to develop the motivation behind these attacks and we'll be able to provide more information as this

we do have a place where you can send inquiries for either interview requests. information requests. >> all right. you have been listening live to officials there in minnesota. bring us the latest developments regarding what has happened in minnesota. earlier today, we are getting word that two lawmakers, state lawmakers in minnesota, have been shot along with their spouses. and according to the associated press, the former house speaker, melissa hortman, and her husband have been killed. as we just heard from officials, this was a targeted attack, both of them. and as we also just heard from officials there, the gunman did, in fact leave behind a manifesto in a vehicle, and it outlined several other targets. so they have notified those on this manifesto, on this list of the concerns about their safety. they didn't go into too many details about who was listed. but but obviously the assumption is that they too are lawmakers.

>> and just to recap, a total of four people, two of them state lawmakers in minnesota, in minneapolis, they represent districts north of minneapolis in the suburbs. you mentioned. one of them is melissa hortman. she's the top house democratic leader in the state legislature and a former house speaker. she and her husband reportedly were shot and killed by a gunman who entered their home. and in what's being called a targeted attack. the other state lawmaker, state senator john hoffman, he and his wife in their home were also targeted and shot. we don't have any updates on how they are doing, but we're going to continue following this story throughout the morning. this is breaking news that we just brought you just into our newsroom in the last 15 minutes or so. this is a scene in minnesota. this is north of minneapolis where these shootings happened to state lawmakers there, shot in what is being described as a targeted attack. and as you mentioned,

we've been covering demonstrations that popped up in solidarity with the anti ice protests in los angeles all week. today, demonstrations against president trump's administration will grow in size and scale in cities from coast to coast. now just take a look at this map shared on the website. no kings.org shows that these protests will be in hundreds of cities across the u.s. you can see dozens of those will be right here in the golden state. now, organizers from san francisco to san jose say they are ready to join in on the effort. folks across the bay area gathered together to prepare for today's demonstrations. now, many of the folks we spoke to shared messages of fear and concern after watching protesters clashed with law enforcement in los angeles over the past week. >> i feel proud of the people doing it. i feel scared about the authoritarianism that's blatantly being showed up, and i feel sad for the people who were

anymore. >> the crisis in the middle east also raising concerns about an increase in both anti-semitism and islamophobia here in the bay area. >> well, breaking news this morning. one minnesota lawmaker is dead, another seriously hurt after they were shot inside both of their homes. their spouses were also shot as well. a manhunt is now underway for the gunman. what we know about the incident in this developing story coming up next. now to that breaking news that we're following in the state of minnesota, police are searching for the gunman who shot two state lawmakers in what officials are calling targeted attacks. we are also getting word that one of those state lawmakers has been killed, along with her husband. this is from officials. also, we are hearing from governor tim walz, and we are going to have that sound coming up in just a little bit. but we understand that the state senator, john hoffman, and state representative melissa hortman, who, as i mentioned, hortman,

has been killed. both lawmakers, democrats were shot inside their homes. it's believed that the shooter was impersonating a law enforcement officer. a shelter in place has been ordered for areas surrounding both of the homes. again, a manhunt is underway for the suspect involved in these apparent targeted attacks of state lawmakers in minnesota. one state lawmaker has been killed along with her husband. it's our understanding that the second state lawmaker, senator john hoffman, and his spouse have both been shot and injured. we did hear from law enforcement officials just a short time ago that they did find a manifesto, apparently written by the suspect in this case, and it outlined other potential targets, lawmakers as well. they have been notified and security has been increased. we're going to stay on top of this again as this massive manhunt continues here in minnesota around the minneapolis area for a gunman

who shot and killed one state lawmaker and wounded another. well, dozens of people gathering in the east bay for a vigil to remember the victims of thursday's tragic air india plane crash. fremont is a home to a large number of people from india or of indian descent. vigil organizers provided a peaceful environment for community members to pray and mourn. this was at the central park performance pavilion. our amber lee was there and tells us that some of the people who attended this vigil say they fly on that same airline when they travel. >> it's very close, right? it's just it's something that we take for granted all the time. like flying in general, we always put our faith in other people, and the fact that it happened in the, in the, in the airport that i fly into all the time, my hearts just go out to everyone that was on board and also their family as well. >> 241 people were killed on

board and others on the ground as well. but one man miraculously survived. the cause of this plane crash is under investigation. >> well, there are renewed concerns this morning about the number of dead whales that have washed up on the shore around the bay area. it comes after another whale carcass was spotted in richmond. ktvu john jack reports. >> i was surprised because it's really low water there. >> ktvu viewer david ong alerting us to this dead whale at point isabel in richmond early friday morning. it was found on a rocky area just feet away from the water. >> makes me think about life cycle. makes me think about the sadness of what i perceive to be an unfortunate death here. >> according to the sausalito based marine mammal center, the dead whale was actually discovered by officials on thursday. they've identified it as a subadult gray whale. >> wow. i've never seen a whale this close, let alone a deceased whale. up on the. this is. i'm

in shock. i don't even know how to really react. it's just like, holy moly, what's going on here? >> at this point, it's unclear how the whale died. >> we'll be conducting an animal autopsy or a necropsy. and what we need to first do is get the whale towed to a safe location where our team can conduct the autopsy on it. >> this latest death only fueling questions about why nearly two dozen whales have been found dead in our area just since the start of 2025. >> gray whales can live for a long time, and we want to understand whether this is being caused by natural things or if there are other impacts to the gray whales. >> now, the whale is expected to be towed from this area on saturday. it will then be moved to another location where that necropsy is expected to be done early next week in richmond. i'm john jack, ktvu, fox two news.

breaking news we are following this morning. two democratic state lawmakers in the state of minnesota have been shot. and what the governor there is calling a politically motivated attack. now, police in minnesota

are searching for the gunman. the two victims are state senator john hoffman and state representative melissa hortman. both lawmakers are democrats. they were shot in their homes. and according to the latest information, what the woman you see on the left of your screen, state representative melissa hortman. she was shot and killed. her husband also shot and killed. this happened during the overnight hours. the man you're looking at on the screen right now is a state senator, jared, state senator hoffman. he was also shot and injured. his wife shot and injured as well. now, it's believed the shooter was impersonating a law enforcement officer when this happened. a shelter in place order is in effect for the area where both of these state lawmakers homes are located. that's north of minneapolis in the suburbs there. stay tuned to mornings on two for the latest updates. we'll continue to follow this story throughout the morning. again, sadly, the woman on the left of your screen, a state representative in

homes. now, both state senator john hoffman and state representative melissa hortman and their spouses were shot. hortman and her husband were both killed. minnesota officials, including governor tim walz, joined a press conference earlier this hour, calling the shooting a great loss for the state. >> we're here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded in minnesota. my good friend and colleague, speaker melissa hortman, and her husband, mark, were shot and killed early this morning in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination. our state lost a great leader and i lost a dearest of friends. speaker hortman was someone who served the people of minnesota with grace, compassion, humor, and a sense of service. >> hoffman and his wife were both wounded by the shooting in their home. at this time, we do not know their conditions. officials are still searching for the shooter. now, at this time, it is believed the shooter was impersonating a law

enforcement officer. there is a shelter in place, in effect near both of the homes where those shootings took place. now, hoffman and hortman both represented districts north of minneapolis. governor walz went on to say, we must stand up against all forms of political violence, and that those who were responsible for the shooting will be held accountable. now we'll bring you more updates as more information becomes available. ali. heather. >> tory, thank you for that update. we'll continue to follow this story throughout the morning. also happening today, hundreds of thousands of protesters are gathering in cities across the country to protest president trump's military parade in washington, d.c. those protests include dozens of marches and rallies here in the bay area. they're part of a nationwide movement protesting the $45 million parade celebrating the army's 250th anniversary, coinciding with president trump's 79th birthday today. the president's escalating immigration crackdown also top of mind for many of the people who plan to demonstrate today. >> i feel scared about the

authoritarianism that's blatantly being shown. i believe that we need to work on immigration, but the way it's being handled is so wrong. you don't just up people out of their homes, their jobs when they're supporting our our communities. >> the dozens of local know king's protests include demonstrations in san jose, oakland and san francisco. san francisco mayor daniel lurie has a message for all the protesters heading to the city this morning. >> if there is violence or destructive activity, law enforcement will step in. if you assault a police officer or break windows of a local business, you will be arrested. >> san francisco san francisco mayor lori adds that police are working closely with protest organizers to ensure everyone's right to demonstrate peacefully. the demonstration in san francisco is set to begin at 1130 this morning at dolores

park. that will be followed by a march to civic center for a rally, and we will continue to have other updates during our 9:00 hour and afterwards on our streaming show, take two. >> all right. in that military parade is set to begin at 330 this afternoon. west coast time and weather forecasters are still warning that heavy rain and thunderstorms could disrupt this big event on the streets of the nation's capital. at this point, there are no plans to cancel or reschedule the parade, which is expected to attract 200,000 people, many of whom support the military. president trump is confident the parade will go on as scheduled. >> the weather is okay, but actually, if it's not, that brings you good luck. that's okay too. it doesn't matter. it doesn't affect the tanks at all. it doesn't affect the soldiers. >> this evening's parade in the heart of the nation's capital is scheduled to include army tanks, thousands of soldiers and flyovers in a show of u.s. military might. >> a federal judge blocked an executive order by the president to require proof of citizenship when you register to vote.

noncitizens are already barred from voting in federal elections. the president's order had also required election officials to only accept mail in ballots received by election day, and withhold federal election funding from states that don't comply. the judge ruled that the constitution does not grant the president any specific powers over elections. >> what happening this morning? an immigrant rights group is holding what it calls an emergency mobilization outside the immigration and customs enforcement office on tehama street there in san francisco. the group says that many migrant families unexpectedly received notice to show up to immigration court proceedings today, or face an infraction. the group says a saturday summons to immigration court is highly unusual. they believe there may be a large number of people detained at that ice office this morning. they're calling for supporters to join them to protest against the arrest. this was said to have started earlier this morning at 7 a.m. they want to remind people the no. king's marches will go on later in the

day. well, waymo says it is taking heightened security measures ahead of today's protests. this comes after several waymo vehicles were vandalized. some even set on fire during previous protests in both san francisco and los angeles. the self-driving car company is adjusting the number of cars that it will be in service, along with where the cars will operate. waymo says it is always assessing local events that might impact its service. a los angeles man who says he's a u.s. citizen says that ice agents arrested him earlier this week after he offered to show federal agents his passport. our sister station in los angeles obtained this surveillance video of the incident in montebello, east of downtown los angeles, on thursday. it shows four men getting out of an unmarked car yelling that they are ice agents. family members say that javier ramirez was taken into custody shortly after he warned his coworkers about an imminent

this. breaking news of the two state lawmakers in minnesota shot today. there was a massive manhunt for the suspect. we know that a manifesto was also found outlining other potential targets. lawmakers in the state of minnesota. those lawmakers have been told about the potential threat. and obviously security has been heightened. >> and this, of course, comes as there have long been concerns in recent months and years, really, about an increasingly hostile political climate. to discuss this and the other political news and events happening today, this is a busy saturday morning. we want to welcome san jose state political science professor donna crane. donna, thank you for joining us this morning. first of all, your reaction to the news this morning about the two democratic state lawmakers in minnesota who were shot in what the governor there says is a politically motivated attack. >> my heart is breaking. in addition to the, you know, the tragedy that this is represents

for the country and for our democracy. i have a lot of personal friends who are elected officials, state legislators, members of congress. i'm i fear for them. and more broadly, i think this really shows as if we didn't all sort of feel it viscerally ourselves, that we are at a really critical point for our democracy. there are people who are willing to resort to violence, and that's that's becoming apparent, you know, week after week, month after month, in this moment. >> do you find that the rhetoric and some of the criticisms have become more intensely personal in recent weeks, especially with the some of the things that have happened over the weekend with protests and the this legal dispute between the governor of california and the president. i think it was just earlier this week, the u.s. house speaker called for governor newsom to be, quote, tarred and feathered. at what point does the words

become too intense and become a problem? >> well, you know, research shows us that it is notoriously difficult to connect, you know, 1 or 2 speeches or rhetorical actions with violence. but research also shows us that overall, when the violent, when the rhetoric becomes more violent and intense, that there are more people who are willing to take direct action, including violence. so, you know, we saw that, for example, during covid when lots of people blamed asian americans or asian people for bringing the virus to america. we saw attacks on older asian people, for instance. so, you know, this has been true throughout history. it's hard to connect one one speech with one action. but we do know that when the climate changes, there are people who are willing to take matters into their own hands and use violence as a legitimate political strategy. >> in light of that, how can lawmakers and political leaders,

how should they respond to something like this? and do you think they will respond that way? >> you know, i think that the responsible elected officials and political leaders will take this into account in their messaging. and i think, you know, where the problem lies is with less responsible lawmakers. so people like president trump, some of his supporters, there are certainly people on the left who also have a problem with with escalating rhetoric. but at the moment, the, you know, the person who is giving the most permission for political violence in this country, we have to say, is president trump. and if he could dial it down and talk about differences between policy and not, you know, your side is evil, it must be eradicated. my side is the only side that needs to survive. that would go a long way. >> well, this terrible news overnight with the minnesota lawmakers comes as today there are two things major things happening in washington, dc. there is a parade planned for the 250th anniversary of the

army, and at the same time, there are demonstrations planned across the nation for something that protest groups are calling no king's day to protest the idea of a military parade coinciding on president trump's birthday. in light of everything that's happened, how do you see those protests and these actions playing out today? >> well, i think this is going to be a really interesting day and week. i think what's been happening this past week are skirmishes, part of a larger battle that is really about trying to win public opinion. so across history, what we know is that there are three big features of public protest that make them that determine whether they're successful or not successful. are they large and do they include people like me? right. people we can identify with? are they nonviolent and do they have a clear and persuasive message? so that, i think, is what we're going to see sort of play out today is do these no

king's rallies, are they very large? are they nonviolent? are they diverse? do they represent sort of regular americans? and are they able to come up with a crisp message that people believe? what we also know this week is that when events are not, when they are small, when they're fringe, when they look chaotic or include violence, and when their message is muddied or when it's not persuasive, that's when they fail and when the public will even turn on them. so i think this week could go a long way towards shaping public opinion. and, you know, this time next week we may have a better sense of where, you know, public opinion is up for grabs right now. we've seen in recent polls we'll have a sense of whether they're likely to achieve their aims. >> very fraught and volatile moment. and we will be checking with you. i hope to check in with you again next week, as you said, for a recap of what happens in this very eventful week we're expecting and weekend. thank you for joining us. donna crane, political science lecturer at san jose state university. we appreciate your insight. as always.

feel sad for the people who were deployed and really had nothing to do. nowhere to go, nowhere to sleep. yeah. so yeah, and it's just it's scary. everything's scary. >> the dozens of local no. king's protests include demonstrations scheduled for san jose, oakland and san francisco today. the demonstration in san francisco is set to begin at 1130 this morning in dolores park. >> well, this morning, about 200 u.s. marines are standing guard at a federal building in los angeles. shortly after they arrived yesterday, they did detain a man who walked onto the property and reportedly did not hear their commands to stop. the brief detention marks the first time that military service members have detained a civilian since they were deployed to la. the man who was detained has been without, has been released without any charges. national guard troops remain in the city as that legal battle over their deployment works its way through the courts. a nightly curfew

adjustments to his immigration policies in those specific industries. >> all right, we are following some overnight developments in the growing military crisis in the middle east, both israel and iran, carrying out the latest wave of deadly attacks early this morning, the most intense fighting between the two countries in decades. the israeli military says iranian missiles have now killed at least three people, also injured dozens of others. all across israel, israeli strikes have killed more than 70 people in iran, including several of tehran's top military leaders and nuclear scientists. the united nations says both sides are ignoring international pleas to end the fighting. >> the growing conflict in the middle east is now hitting home for many people here in the bay area. local religious and community leaders say the fighting between israel and iran is dramatically raising tensions in our region. the council on american-islamic relations is among the bay area groups that is strongly condemning israel's attack on iran, fearing it could soon lead to an all out war.

a second. we are following some developing news that we've been following since the overnight hours of two minnesota state lawmakers who were shot in their home, one of them killed. she and her husband killed. and the search for the gunman is still ongoing. want to turn things over to heather holmes, my colleague here who is monitoring some of the reaction from our bay area lawmakers. >> yeah, we are. we're seeing really lawmakers on both sides of the aisle respond to this tragedy on x. and i want to read something that former house speaker nancy pelosi, of course, of san francisco is, is saying about this incident. she says paul and i are heartbroken by targeted shootings in the homes of minnesota. senator hoffman, speaker emerita hortman and their spouses, which are a shocking and abhorrent

manifestation of political violence in our country. nancy pelosi goes on to say, unfortunately, we know the tragedy of when political violence hits home very well. all of us must remember that it's not only the act of violence, but also the reaction to it that can normalize it. this climate of politically motivated violence must end. pelosi goes on to say, our prayers go out to the families of the victims, their friends and supporters in minnesota with the certainty that the assassin in this heinous act will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. obviously, today's shootings of two state lawmakers in minnesota drawing all sorts of reactions from both democratic and republican lawmakers as they now see what is playing out in the state of minnesota, with these two lawmakers targeted in what appears to be a politically motivated attack. law. law enforcement officials in minnesota a short time ago, when we took a news conference live, also shared with us that the suspect in this case did leave behind a manifesto that included

a long quote, long list of names, presumably other lawmakers. and obviously they have been told about this potential threat. and so security regarding those other lawmakers has been heightened as officials in minnesota continue to search for the suspect. but again, a bay area lawmakers weighing in on this tragedy that took place earlier today in minnesota. >> and the condemnation is across the aisle, too, as well, with some republicans, including house speaker mike johnson, condemning the violence. horrific political violence has no place in our society. that was his response as well. we will continue to follow that story throughout the morning. in the meantime, we want to turn some of the other news happening here in the bay area. new this morning, a second gray whale carcass has been discovered at point isabel in richmond. we first got a call about it from a viewer last night. the viewer said that the whale carcass appeared to wash up about 100m away from another whale that was found yesterday morning. our crew this morning found that

whale carcass. we've reached out to the marine mammal center for information about all of this. it comes as there are growing concerns about about two dozen whale carcasses that have washed up along bay area shores just in this year alone. so we'll have more on that story coming up. a new discovery that new discovery comes amid renewed concerns, as we mentioned, about the whale carcasses that have been washing up on the shore around the bay area. for that part of the story. we'll turn now to ktvu john jack with more. >> i was surprised because it's really low water there. >> ktvu viewer david ong alerting us to this dead whale at point isabel in richmond early friday morning. it was found on a rocky area just feet away from the water. >> makes me think about life cycle. makes me think about the sadness of what i perceive to be an unfortunate death here. >> according to the sausalito based marine mammal center, the dead whale was actually discovered by officials on thursday. they've identified it as a subadult gray whale.

>> wow. i've never seen a whale this close, let alone a deceased whale. up on the. this is. i'm in shock. i don't even know how to really react. it's just like, holy moly, what's going on here? >> at this point, it's unclear how the whale died. >> we'll be conducting an animal autopsy or a necropsy. and what we need to first do is get the whale towed to a safe location where our team can conduct the autopsy on it. >> this latest death only fueling questions about why nearly two dozen whales have been found dead in our area just since the start of 2025. >> gray whales can live for a long time, and we want to understand whether this is being caused by natural things or if there are other impacts to the gray whales. >> now, the whale is expected to be towed from this area on saturday. it will then be moved to another location where that

getting ready, maybe for a vacation in hawaii, have a packed summer with plans every weekend, or simply plan to keep it low key. summer looks different to many people, and comparing your summer to others can be overwhelming. so to talk more about the growing pressure to do it all, we welcome to the studios today, tiana soto, a fortune 500 keynote speaker and mental health educator who is helping us deal with what's known as summer fomo or fear of missing out. tiana, really appreciate you being here. so summer can be hard because on social media we see folks posting all of these great vacations that they're having. and then i feel like a lot of us compare. you say, don't do that. >> yes, absolutely. social media can be such an overwhelming place. and, you know, the first thing i want to remind people is that it's a highlight reel. so have that perspective when you're heading into your summer. but i see a lot of people dealing with fomo, this fear of missing out and kind of comparing themselves to what everybody else is doing. but this can be really difficult and

overwhelming and kind of take the fun out of summer. so i believe you deserve to enjoy the season. and i encourage people to, you know, see if you can avoid that fomo at all costs if you can. >> so how do we i mean, obviously, i would guess that limiting social media is probably one way. >> yes, absolutely. so, you know, it's hard because we're plugged in all the time. but i think if you can set any limits with your screen time, or it could be as simple as putting your phone in another room while you're winding down for bed or, you know, making sure that your phone is not at the table when you're having a meal with your loved ones. i think these little things can go a really long way, and it kind of helps protect your peace when you're not constantly doomscrolling and looking at what other folks are doing. >> but i think also a lot of us, summer is an opportunity to do things, and we might try to pack too much in. how do we avoid doing doing that? because it's sort of like we've got to get it done and this is the time to go out and explore and to try some new things. >> absolutely. it's all about finding that balance and what

feels good and healthy for you. so i always recommend to folks, you know, see if you can set some boundaries with your time and really be intentional about where you're putting your time and energy. so try to fill your day with things that genuinely bring you happiness and joy. instead of trying to feel that pressure to be everywhere all the time. so if you know doing a certain activity brings you joy, that's great. but if you're kind of feeling that pressure, see if you can pull back a little bit and be a little more intentional about it. >> so, deanna, that means sometimes you've got to say no. >> yes. >> and that's not easy to do. >> not easy to do at all. i think the key is saying no and not feeling guilty about saying no. which hey, that's something i'm always working on too. so constantly practicing that is helpful. >> there is also this misconception that, you know, summer needs to be perfect. i need to have that perfect vacation. >> absolutely. i mean, it's tough, right? because again, going back to social media, you see what everybody's doing. you feel that pressure to maybe have the perfect photo even for instagram or do really fun things, but just reminding folks that, you know, it's important to do what makes you happy and

not just try to do things for show. i think that's something i always try to remind people this season. >> so one aspect that you talk about is the social media. so what are some tips maybe for us to really live in that moment and not trying to capture it for social media and our followers? >> yeah, that's a great question. i mean, it's much easier said than done to live in the moment. right? but i always say that i think the key here is cultivating a sense of mindfulness, which is really rooting yourself in the present, trying not to worry about what's happening in the future or the past, but living in the here and now. and this can be really simple. i think we overcomplicate it sometimes, but this could be as simple as taking your dog for a walk and noticing the sunshine or the sound of the birds. this could be taking your kids for ice cream this summer and having fun trying all the different flavors. so anything that roots you in the here and now, that's really simple and tangible, i think can be helpful. >> i think that's really good because that it doesn't mean that that your vacation has to be elaborate with a trip to, let's say, europe, it can be a way for you to enjoy what summer

brings, aside from an elaborate trip somewhere. >> exactly. it could even be a staycation, you know, find a place nearby or locally that you enjoy, and see if you can turn that into a bit of a getaway on its own. >> yeah. and then finally, for you, when we talk about social media, because there is this desire to want to share all of the great things that we're doing. do you have any advice, though, when we are on vacation? should we maybe limit it to one post a day? or. i know it's different for every person, but but do you have some advice in that regard? >> yeah, that's a great point because we can definitely feel that pressure to post and, you know, show on our stories where we are. i would say setting limits for yourself again can be really helpful. maybe you take a few minutes on your vacation to post and then put your phone in the other room, or make sure that when you're on the beach, you know you're really enjoying the moment. something that i like to do is take a lot of pictures throughout my vacation, but i won't post till later so that i still feel like i'm enjoying time with the people i'm with. but yeah, it's different for everyone. but i

administration has reportedly directed ice to pause its enforcement operations in the hospitality, restaurant and agriculture industries. that's according to the new york times, in which which cites an internal memo from a senior ice official

telling agents to hold off on investigating places like hotels, restaurants, farms and meatpacking plants. the report comes just one day after president trump said he wanted to make adjustments to his immigration policies in those industries. >> in the wake of that report, we're hearing from people in the farming industry who are fearful that the next round of ice operations could target them, or a family member. felix torres works along highway one in half moon bay. he came to the u.s. due to amnesty under president reagan decades ago. he is hopeful the ice raids and the mood of the country will take a different approach. >> well, we are asking for right now of the current president is to touch his heart, feel for our community that is hurting and put an end to these ice raids and separation of these hardworking families. >> this comes as half moon bay officials say their partners are reporting fewer people in

in his wife as well. they were gravely injured, and a manhunt is underway to try and find the person responsible. and what is being called a politically motivated assassination by the governor in that state. >> and obviously, the deadly situation, getting reaction from all sorts of lawmakers. the president, donald trump, saying that he and his team are monitoring the situation. i want to read a statement from the president that he issued a short time ago. he said, i have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against state lawmakers. he says our attorney general, pam bondi, and the fbi are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law. president trump says such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the united states of america. he goes on to say, god bless the great people of minnesota, a truly great place. so reaction today from president trump keeping an eye on the manhunt there in minnesota. >> we also have tory gains here

in the studio with us, telling us about some of the latest details with what happened and the timeline of events. tory. >> yeah. state officials say two democratic lawmakers were targeted in their homes, both state senator john hoffman and state representative melissa hortman and their spouses were shot. hortman and her husband were both killed. now, officials are still searching for the shooter. at this time, it is believed the shooter was impersonating a law enforcement officer, and that's how they gained access to the homes. police said the shooter had a vehicle that resembled a police squad car, including the lights. the shooter also had a vest and clothing that appeared similar to that of a police officer. >> at approximately 335 that another call came in when it was officers proactively checking because they knew of the incident that occurred, and they were going to check on speaker hortman at that time, at which time brooklyn park police officers encountered the individual who immediately fired

at them, and they exchanged gunfire. and then the individual was able to escape during that exchange of gunfire. >> now, hoffman and his wife were both wounded by the shooting in their home. at this time, state officials said hoffman and his wife are currently in the hospital receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. now, hoffman and hortman both represented districts north of minneapolis. there is currently a shelter in place, in effect near both of the homes where those shootings took place. now, minnesota officials, including governor tim walz, spoke about the tragedy at a press conference, calling hauptmann's death a loss for the state. >> we're here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded in minnesota. my good friend and colleague, speaker melissa hortman, and her husband, mark, were shot and killed early this morning in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination. our state lost a great leader and i lost a dearest of friends. speaker hortman was someone who served the people of minnesota with grace, compassion, humor, and a

sense of service. >> now, minnesota officials say that suspect did leave a manifesto with a list of other lawmakers. those individuals have been provided with additional security. also in the last hour, more messages of support and sadness have poured out for those minnesota lawmakers. former u.s. representative for arizona gabby giffords, who was also targeted in a shooting in 2011, saying, quote, i'm devastated to learn that my friend, minnesota speaker melissa hortman and her husband, mark hortman, were killed in last night's shooting. heather ali. >> tory we also just want to mention some of the latest information from that news conference that you included in your story there. officials are urging some of the people in minneapolis to avoid anti-trump protests and some of the no protests that have been scheduled there and across the country today, because they say officials there say they have reason to believe that the gunman, who is still at large, may be planning to target the

demonstrations today. so a lot of activity happening there in minneapolis planned some demonstrations, planned that officials are now encouraging people to avoid for the day. but these demonstrations are scheduled to happen across the country today. hundreds of thousands of protesters gathering in cities to protest president trump's military parade in washington, d.c. those protests include dozens of marches and rallies here in the bay area, part of a nationwide movement protesting the $45 million parade celebrating the army's 250th anniversary and coinciding with president trump's 79th birthday. the president's immigration crackdown in recent weeks has also top of mind for many of the people taking part in protests today. >> i feel scared about the authoritarianism that's blatantly being shown. i believe that we need to work on immigration, but the way it's being handled is so wrong. you don't just up people out of

their homes, their jobs when they're supporting our our communities. >> the dozens of local protests include demonstrations in san jose, oakland and san francisco. mayor daniel lurie has a message for protesters heading to san francisco this morning. >> if there is violence or destructive activity, law enforcement will step in. if you assault a police officer or break windows of a local business, you will be arrested. >> mayor lurie adds san francisco police are working closely with protest organizers to ensure everyone's right to demonstrate peacefully. the demonstration in san francisco set to begin at 1130. in dolores park, it will be followed by a march to civic center for a rally as well. we will continue to have live updates on the demonstrations planned in the bay area and across the country throughout our 9:00 hour and afterwards on take two. >> waymo says it is taking heightened security measures ahead of the planned

demonstrations. this comes after several waymo vehicles were vandalized and some even set on fire during previous protests in san francisco and los angeles. the self-driving car company is adjusting the number of cars that will be in service, along with where the cars will operate, waymo says it is always assessing local events that might impact its service. well, that military parade in washington, d.c, is set to begin around 330 this afternoon, west coast time, and forecasters are still warning that heavy rain and thunderstorms could disrupt the big event. at this point. there are no plans, though, to cancel or alter the parade, which is expected to attract about 200,000 people. and president trump is confident that the parade will go on as scheduled. >> the weather is okay, but actually it's not. that brings you good luck. that's okay too. doesn't matter. it doesn't affect the tanks at all. it doesn't affect the soldiers. >> this evening's parade is set to include army tanks, thousands of soldiers and flyovers in a

show of u.s. military might. >> a federal judge has blocked an executive order by the president that would have required proof of citizenship. when you register to vote, noncitizens are already barred from voting in federal elections. the president's order had also required election officials to only accept mail in ballots received by election day, and withhold federal election funding from states that don't comply. the judge ruled that the constitution does not grant the president any specific powers over elections. a los angeles man who says he is a u.s. citizen says ice agents arrested him earlier this week after he offered to show federal agents his passport. our sister station in los angeles obtained this surveillance video of the incident in montebello, east of downtown los angeles, on thursday. it shows four men getting out of an unmarked car yelling that they are ice agents. family members say javier ramirez was taken into custody shortly after he warned

his coworkers about an imminent ice raid. >> pretty much all my family members came out and told them, hey, he's an american citizen. what do you guys are doing? you know, but they didn't they didn't pay attention to that, you know? and my brother told them, hey, i was a i'm a us citizen. what do you guys are doing? you know, i was born in san bernardino and they still antagonized them. >> the u.s. attorney's office says ramirez was arrested for assaulting a police officer, but his family strongly denies that. they also say ramirez is diabetic and needs insulin. they're worried he's not getting his medication while in custody. >> all right. we want to get another check on the weekend forecast. obviously, a big day coming up tomorrow for father's day. so here with a look at what things look like for the weekend is rosemary. >> yes. heather. ali we are looking at more of the same, at least when it comes to the temperatures. we are seeing a little bit more sunshine to join us on this saturday morning. here's a look over the golden gate bridge where no such luck going on right here along the

breaking news we've been following for you this morning. the former democratic speaker of the house in minnesota, melissa hortman, and her husband were shot and killed in their home early this morning in what the governor of minnesota is calling a politically motivated attack. state senator john hoffman and his wife, also in minnesota, shot and injured by that same gunman who is still at large. a manhunt is underway to find the person responsible. both lawmakers were democrats. they were both shot in their homes, their spouses as well. it's believed that the shooter was impersonating a law enforcement officer when he knocked on the door of their homes in the middle of the night, 2:00 in the morning, dressed as a police officer. according to officials who relayed more information in a news conference this morning in minnesota. a shelter in place order is in effect for the neighborhoods around both of those homes. this happened in the suburbs north of

minneapolis. we continue to follow the latest developments. stay tuned to mornings on two for more updates on this story. some other news we are following for you locally here at home. police in tiburon are warning that fake guns can have real consequences. two college students were pulled over after a 911 call reported some reckless driving and a suspected firearm. officers found four bb guns that looked like real weapons along with alcohol, a fake id and drugs in their vehicle. the college students handed over those b-b guns and they are going to be destroyed. >> well, dozens of people gathered in the east bay for a vigil to remember the victims of thursday's tragic air india plane crash. fremont is home to a large number of people from india or of indian descent. vigil organizers provided a peaceful environment for community members to pray and mourn at the central park performance pavilion. our amber lee was there, and she spoke with some people at the vigil who say they fly on that same airline when they travel.

>> it's very close, right? it's just it's something that we take for granted all the time. like flying in general, we always put our faith in other people, and the fact that it happened in the, in the, in the airport that i fly into all the time, my hearts just go out to everyone that was on board and also their family as well. >> 241 people were killed on board. others on the ground were also hurt, but one man did miraculously survive. the cause of that plane crash is under investigation. the santa clara county board of supervisors is expected to vote next week on whether to support state legislation that would allow counties to consider an income tax ballot measure. the county says about 30% of its revenue comes from the federal government. but with deep cuts being actively considered in washington, d.c. well, county officials say they need to explore other options. currently, under state law, counties are unable to even consider adopting a local income

tax. the income tax would apply to incomes of $1 million or more. >> a grand opening five years in the making. the long awaited new smart commuter train now pulling into the town of windsor. as ktvu tom vacar explains, the smart train's recent success comes at a time when mass transit is struggling across the nation. >> all aboard! next stop healdsburg and cloverdale. >> under a hot sun in the sonoma town of windsor, some 700 townsfolk and dignitaries gathered to officially welcome smart train at the system's 14th station. leaving only healdsburg and cloverdale to the north to be completed. >> 67 years and 67 years since the last passenger train came to windsor. >> smart train is an unqualified success. >> smart is at 160% of its ridership pre-pandemic. that's unheard of. across california. >> it means cleaner air for our

kids and fewer cars on the road. it means enhanced mobility and quality of life. >> on weekdays, like at the other stations from 4:30 a.m. to just after 10 p.m, 21 trains will arrive and 21 will depart. weekends, eight trains each day, 7 a.m. until just after 9 p.m. >> it's transportation for free if you're under 18 or over 65. it's inexpensive. if you're in between those ages. >> what do townsfolk and the regular riders along the line think? >> i've already been on the train once, and it's great. it's i bet it's really going to boost our economy here in windsor and a lot more tourist attraction. >> especially when it once it goes up to healdsburg, you're going to have a lot of wine people coming up here and it's just going to be a zoo. it's going to be great. >> i used to volunteer and get petitions signed to get the smart train in to sonoma and marin. i'm so happy for the train. >> people are going to love it

actually, because windsor hasn't seen a train like a long, long, long, long, very long time. >> when people find out how cool of a town windsor is, they're going to come. >> what all of this means far beyond the train station is an opportunity for more tourism and an opportunity for more people to move north, should they choose to. in effect, it is a new connection to the bay area. tom vacar ktvu, fox two news. >> well, the spring ski season is coming to a close at mammoth mountain, just south of yosemite in the eastern sierra. this is the last weekend that skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes before the resort wraps up another season. tomorrow, there will be free goodies, giveaways, and an end of season party, along with some great conditions for skiers at the resort in mono county. >> we have three chairlifts open with terrain from top to bottom, and about ten runs in operation. and in. in conjunction with that, we're also kicking off all

of our summer activities. >> the mammoth mountain spokesperson says. this weekend ends one of the longest ski and snowboard seasons ever in california. >> okay, time for us to get a look at the forecast. and boy, if you're going to be heading up there, i guess it's going to be a nice day to get in one final run, right? one final run on the ski ski lifts there. >> yes, yes, the sierra foothills. >> and the sierra mountains. gorgeous as you both know, any time of year. but if you are thinking about getting over towards that area for the weekend, they are enjoying some nice blue sky just like what we see here at home. we've got more sunshine out the gate this morning and with that, temperatures are beginning to rebound already. with that said, we are going to continue running cool for this time of year as we roll through the afternoons. here's a look at storm tracker two. a little bit of cloud cover along the coast and just inside the bay, and high clouds sweeping in not only over the bay area, but the entire state.

as you can see here on storm tracker two. and these high clouds will continue to pour in overhead for the afternoon today. likely to be joining us for tomorrow as well. the winds are onshore in many areas, including through the delta this morning, where we're seeing anywhere from 10 to 15mph right now on the peninsula. sfo reporting a ten mile per hour breeze. san jose very gentle breeze from the northwest, as well as livermore just coming in right about three miles per hour. if you've been enjoying this weather, i say you're going to like the weekend. we've got low 60s in areas like pacifica for today, low 70s in santa cruz, and even our hotter spots only into the upper 70s to low 80s right now. 58 degrees reported in san francisco with partly sunny conditions, mid 60s in napa with mostly sunny weather and a 60 degrees now in livermore, as well as the south bay of san jose into the east bay. we go where we've got low 60s lafayette, walnut creek, alamo, dublin and brentwood

already one neighborhood there reporting 71 the livermore valley for today going to be very pleasant by lunchtime, 73 degrees expected. upper 70s for the second half of the day, even into sunset, which is closer to eight 3833 these days, at least san francisco time. we're still enjoying 60s for some of our inland cities, and the afternoon highs across the region. 72 for redwood city today. upper 70s in concord in the north bay. upper 70s for santa rosa, a cool 63 in san francisco tomorrow enjoying father's day outdoors. well, a near repeat expected a cool one at the coast, a warm one inland and very mild weather around the bay. we get back to work on monday. not much change, but finally seeing a heat up in this extended forecast. here we'll remain with low 60s at the coast, our bayside communities into the 70s, nearing 80 degrees by wednesday when temperatures peak and our inland communities,

all right. welcome back everyone. we want to update you now on that developing news that we're following in minnesota. police continuing to search right now for a gunman who shot and killed a minnesota state lawmaker, as well as her husband. >> another state lawmaker and his wife were wounded by the same gunman in these overnight attacks. this is you're looking at a picture here of state senator john hoffman. he and his wife were injured when a man impersonating a police officer came to their door of their home at 2:00 in the morning, according to officials. and at that person, the gunman then shot that state senator and his wife. they are undergoing

surgery right now that a short time later, that same gunman is believed to have gone to the home of the former speaker of the house in minnesota, representative melissa hortman. that gunman then shot and killed her and her husband. police at some point were able to spot this gunman and he got away. so he is on the loose. and the fbi and local law enforcement, state police in minnesota are all searching for him. this is believed to be a politically motivated attack. we'll have more on this story on take two and more coverage for the next half hour and online as well. >> yeah, just sadness really gripping the state of minnesota and the entire country. president trump being briefed on the situation, offering his condolences, saying that violence like this will not be tolerated. also hearing from other lawmakers, including our own nancy pelosi, who of course was her and her her husband was attacked in san francisco, and she too, condemning the

violence. it is also worth noting that the manifesto that was found in the suspect's vehicle did outline other lawmakers potential victims here, potential targets. so they have been notified and their security increased given what's going on. also, officials in minnesota encouraging people not to attend any of the protests that were planned today because of the fact that the gunman is still on the loose. so, again, an ongoing situation that we're going to continue to follow, especially coming up on take two. >> and of course, those know king's protests happening not just in minneapolis but planned for throughout the country and here in the bay area as well. i believe we may have some live pictures of some of the preparations underway. if not, we're going to have more of that. there you see, that's live pictures that is in ignore the lower third there. this is a live picture of the no king's protest that is about to get underway in los angeles. so you can see thousands of people
