clock news on ktvu. fox two. >> now at ten. breaking news in antioch, where a fast-moving brush fire has ripped through a hillside, filling the skies with smoke and frightening an entire neighborhood. >> all the fires they wanted to help some people hose off some yards, people that weren't home. so they actually hopped a fence. kind of helped her backyard so it didn't catch or anything happened. >> and in just the last 20 minutes, antioch police say evacuation orders have been lifted. good evening, i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. that fire kicked up around 730 tonight on somersville road in the southwest part of the city. the flames raced up a dry hillside, burning more than 200 acres, and some injuries have been reported. >> ktvu john joins us live from antioch tonight. and, john, what are you seeing? >> claudine. mike, what you can probably hear right now is the wind. and that has been fueling these flames all evening. i want to show you what the fire looks like right now. this is the hillside we've been talking

about. you see those kind of twinkling lights in the distance? that is the fire. that is the remnants, the embers of the fire continuing to burn tonight as we speak. now, about 830 tonight, this fire had grown to more than 210 acres. we saw helicopters brought in to fight the flames from above as people hosed down their yards to keep those embers from igniting their homes. now, residents who live in this area were warned to be prepared for a possible evacuation, although, as we heard, those warnings have now been lifted. we spoke to people here on osprey drive who decided to evacuate anyway for about an hour earlier tonight. >> open the door and just seen a lot of smoke. you know, normally it's clear up here so you know it's fire. you get that dark smoke and it was a little bit too dark than it normally is at the time. and, you know, you smelled it. and, you know, i think we got a fire going on up here. and that was, you know, i told my wife and she started grabbing stuff and we got out of

here. >> very scary, very scary. just grabbed our things and prayed and just got out, got out as quickly as we could. >> and we're told one person was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. thankfully, no word on any damage to homes in this area. and one thing we do want to mention is because of this wind, the air quality has really been impacted in this area, so you might want to just stay inside for the rest of the evening. that is of course a consideration. although the fire at this point at least somewhat under control. guys, back to you. >> the lifted evacuation orders are good news for folks and everyone trying to kind of get back in the area. what kind of activity can we expect tonight, though, with firefighters and streets and areas where they're trying to keep this fire still at bay, as they still continue to make sure all the hotspots are out. >> yeah, i mean, we continue to hear those helicopters above us,

fire trucks kind of moving around. people seem to sort of be behaving themselves. and, you know, they've gone back home. thankfully, there's no longer, as you mentioned, that threat of evacuation. but we do expect a lot of activity as we head on through tonight as fire. fire firefighters want to ensure that this fire stays under control. >> yeah, they'll be out there all night and into the morning hours for sure, based on just the wind there whipping your shirt around. john, we appreciate it. thank you. with that, we bring in our chief meteorologist mark tamayo. we saw the wind. i mean, it's gusty out there right now. >> tonight. yeah. this is the sequence of events we do not like to see. right. we're talking about a hot day today. they reached the mid to upper 90s. and then you factor in the wind and that the fire growing rapidly. so thankfully there has been some improvement with the with the fire zone. but still the winds as you were seeing with that live shot have not backed off yet. so still a big challenge for fire crews in that area. as we take a closer look at the mapping system right now, just to give you a better idea

of the layout where this fire is happening. so here is contra loma reservoir and the bottom right portion of your screen there. and we'll come in closer on this map here. we'll show you some of the streets. and you can see some of the terrain. that's where some of that fire was burning. so you can see cambridge drive and james dolan boulevard, somersville road. of course the fire is named after that. and we'll come in really tight once again, to give you a perspective of some of the elevation where that fire was burning rapidly earlier this evening with those stronger winds, i talked about the winds. so here's the overall flow. a high today of 96 degrees in the antioch area, as we do check out the weather station. this is one site showing you current temperatures 74 degrees, winds only ten miles an hour. that's not one sight, but based on everything we're seeing in this area, this observation point might be a bit better here. this black diamond mines here, you can see it's still fairly warm 82 degrees winds right now gusting to 33 miles an hour. still very dry right around 24%. so this site is in agreement with those stronger winds we have been noticing. and the winds are not going to back off, as you can pick out overnight here with the forecast model still breezy to windy. this is

into your wednesday morning at six and at 7:00. overnight temperatures back down into the 60s but still breezy to windy. and we do have that air quality advisory in place right now for that area. with all that wildfire smoke being produced from earlier today. so still breezy to windy for tonight, but we're talking about a cool down for tomorrow. we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. >> okay. thank you mark. well pg and e says due to that elevated fire risk, parts of alameda, contra costa and santa clara counties could have their power shut off as early as tomorrow through saturday. napa and sonoma counties were on that list originally, but have since been removed. and right now most of the communities marked for possible shutoffs are in remote areas or more remote areas of contra costa and alameda counties, outside of the livermore and brentwood city limits. >> and a fire in the hills of east san jose yesterday is now fully contained. tonight, genesis project app is being credited with helping alert people to evacuate from that fire early yesterday. the app uses geo targeted information to

send those notices, alerting people of their specific risk at a specific time. the app has been around for a few years, but yesterday was the first time it was in use in the city of san jose, right before the ranch place fire started in the foothills. the fire did burn nearly 100 acres. >> ominous. you don't have any, you know. it doesn't know who you are. it just knows that if your phone is in an area that is designated for an evacuation order or warning or advisory, it will send you that notice. >> the app was also used in los angeles county during the fires back in january. as for the san jose fire, a cause is still being investigated. >> hundreds of homeowners in the berkeley hills will soon have to follow new landscaping rules aimed at lowering the risk of wildfires. the city council gave final approval last night to require a five foot buffer zone around homes in neighborhoods near tilden park and panoramic hill. homeowners will have to clear all the vegetation in those zones to help stop the spread of sparks and embers. the

council approved a delay on the inspection requirement until may of next year. >> new at ten. we have learned that law enforcement is now investigating a series of commercial burglaries in different parts of oakland that took place over this past weekend, and they may be tied to a group of suspects using a stolen vehicle. ktvu is amber lee live tonight here in studio with the story. amber. >> mike. at least four businesses were broken into early sunday morning within a span of 90 minutes. we have learned that the descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle are the same in all these. break-ins, a restaurant owner who shared surveillance videos, tells me he's frustrated. surveillance video shows suspects inside a restaurant in oakland's little saigon neighborhood, breaking into a california state lottery machine in the early morning hours of sunday. the owner tells me it's the fifth burglary at his shop in the past year. >> say they took the catwalk.

>> deep wind tells me thieves stole the cash box and all the lottery tickets. >> a they come to it, they have the machine they play. that's why they like they come here. >> he says the machine attracts customers to his restaurant. these are the police reports he's filed each time there's been a break in. >> what's your reaction? how do you feel? >> it really upset about that? you know. >> authorities say the same three suspects in black clothing and black ski masks may be responsible for break ins at three other businesses in different parts of oakland that same morning, including temple tattoo in downtown oakland. the owner tells me an atm was stolen from his shop. >> i've been here for 27 years and i always thought i would always be here. >> freddy corbin says. this is the third break-in in less than two years, and even before this latest theft, he had decided to move in august to another oakland neighborhood. >> my clients cars are getting broken into. some of the women don't feel safe or i'm walking

them to their cars. >> some city council members tell me the shortage of police officers plays a major role. >> we need greater cooperation from the sheriff's department, the highway patrol and the bart police. i have so many law enforcement agencies, but we're not working together. >> one idea is to recruit cadets with nontraditional backgrounds. >> we've got to think about the next generation of police officers. given a post-george floyd era. and i do plan to be going to schools of social work. >> authorities are now looking at this newer model silver honda four-door car with tinted windows and black wheels. they suspect it was used in all four of this weekend's burglaries. >> i would like it if the city would basically hold people accountable for their actions. you know. >> shop owners hope that with a new mayor and a new district attorney that suspects will face consequences so that they don't keep committing crimes. they tell me they love oakland and don't want to give up hope that

things will get better. mike. >> amber lee live tonight here in studio. amber. thank you for that. san francisco police arrested 25 people in a drug sweep. police say the enforcement yesterday included buy bust operations along sixth street, golden gate and grove and hyde. officers seized more than 380g of narcotics, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin as well as a gun. police say the sweep was conducted with the city's drug market agency coordination center. >> the family of a san jose man who was shot by police and attacked by a k-9 will be paid $1 million by the city under a legal settlement. the settlement caps a civil lawsuit filed against san jose in the death of 27 year old david tovar junior, back in 2021, police said. tovar was a person of interest in several violent crimes, including a homicide. he had already been shot multiple times when police unleashed the k-9, which bit tovar for two minutes and 40s officers on the scene said tovar appeared to be reaching for a gun, which turned

out to be a screwdriver. the santa clara county district attorney cleared all of those officers of any criminal wrongdoing. >> now to the latest in the middle east. tonight, iranian state television is reporting israel has attacked iran's heavy water reactor in the city of arak, southwest of the capital of tehran. we are also learning just now that officials say an israeli hospital has suffered extensive damage after an iranian missile strike. >> and israel's intense bombing campaign on iran's nuclear and military sites have killed at least 585 people and caused more than 1300 injuries. iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks, causing at least 24 deaths and 800 injuries in israel. israel says its strikes are intended to stop iran from building a nuclear weapon, while iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful. president trump remains noncommittal on what will happen next as the u.s. continues moving new military assets towards the middle east. >> i may do it. i may not do it.

has ordered a specialized suicide hotline for lgbtq youth to shut down. starting july 17th, anyone who calls 988 the national suicide and crisis lifeline will no longer have the option to press number three to speak with a counselor specifically trained to handle lgbtq issues. the option for specialized lgbtq support began

wrote, the law does not violate the constitution's equal protection clause. in her dissent, justice sonia sotomayor says this decision abandons transgender children and their families to political whims. the aclu lawyer who argued the case called the ruling a devastating loss for transgender people. jessica levinson, a law professor at loyola marymount, says this does not change things for states that don't have a ban. >> nothing in this decision says you must have a law like tennessee's. it says you may. nothing under the equal protection clause bars you from doing so. so i know that this will be a phrase that people have heard before with respect to other cases. it leaves it to the states. and the idea is and what the majority was saying is this is a case where we want policymakers, elected decision makers making these calls, not unelected judges. so it goes back to the states to determine what they want to do.

and into the weekend will elevate the fire danger. we do not have a red flag fire warning, but still gusty winds around 20 to 35 miles an hour. relative humidity around 15 to 25%. so this will be watching out for these areas. parts of the north bay and parts of the east bay with this pattern setting up. so those winds just know that when you notice those winds, fire danger will be increasing. but no red flag warnings issued just yet. but that could be changing. this particular forecast model lumps everything together the temperature, the wind, the relative humidity and where you see some coverage. that's where fire danger is on the increase. so what happens for tomorrow afternoon? and then once again into your friday afternoon? a quick update on the tropics in the eastern pacific. this is powerful hurricane eric. right now. this is intensified just over the past hour or so to a category four major hurricane with winds of 145 miles an hour. you can see that well defined eye approaching parts of mexico. looks like landfall could be happening in the next few hours, right around puerto escondido. right now, this is a major hurricane moving in the

northwest at about nine miles an hour. and here is that forecast track. so unfortunately, rapid development leading to a serious storm out in the eastern pacific. for us here in the bay area. we had clearing skies earlier today, some patchy cloud cover trying to get its act together for tonight into tomorrow morning. and we'll check out the current winds. there's fairfield right now, a southwest wind at 20 oakland airport gusting to nearly 30 miles an hour. some more reports for you. half moon bay calm winds and sfo winds over 20 miles an hour. current numbers in the 50s in san francisco, but still warm out toward concord 74 san jose in the lower 60s and most areas tomorrow morning will be in the 50s, some areas of fog out there, and once again, the winds will be picking up into the afternoon hours. this is for your thursday afternoon, and this is going to stick around for a few days into friday and into the weekend. so as a result, fire danger will be talking about that. but the concerns will be increasing with those winds picking up today, the hottest day of the week. now we're watching this system move in from the north. this will
