community comes together. good evening, i'm greg lee. pride weekend is here and for many, the highlight of the festivities is the parade on sunday. ktvu christien kafton joins us live along the parade route. kristen, you got to see the work being done on the floats that will be part of this celebration. >> absolutely. and greg, that work underway right now, all those last minute touches that they're putting on those floats, we're here at the foot of market because this is where the parade kicks off. and as you said today, we got a sneak peek of some of those extraordinary floats inside a cavernous warehouse on the embarcadero. work is underway on the colorful floats that will glide up market street as part of the annual pride parade celebration. stephanie mufson from the parade guide said crews have been hard at work for months. >> we're working on it in bits and pieces and so we've got one artist over here painting this. we've got a builder over here building this, and it's only in the last week that all of this converges and becomes the art that you actually get to see. >> float building is a special

kind of art to be able to create something that's both beautiful and sturdy at the same time. >> have you ever had to build a set that can go through 30 mile an hour winds while it's bouncing down the road while people are dancing? so it's definitely an added level of security. >> working on the floats has been especially meaningful to bon, who attended pride celebrations for years and is now working to help create the magic. >> i'm loving it. it has been a dream. i've been going since 2011. i've wanted to go since i was really little, but you know, i was little. so once i hit high school, i was like, all right, mom, i'm going. and i've just never stopped. >> bon said getting to accompany the floats will only add to the excitement. >> so i will be following one of these floats. i'm not sure which one yet. to make sure everything's all right, be in the parade. so i'm super stoked so i won't be on the sidelines for once. >> it's the best float in the parade right here. >> with much of the work on the floats now complete, they're being towed out to pre-staging areas, getting ready for their debut on sunday. the float

makers say their months of hard work all pay off when parade goers get their first look. >> that's when i finally have a moment where i can relax back and take in all the work that we've been doing over the last few months, and that's that's when it's really the most fun for me. it's also when all the crowds are coming in and i get to see their reactions, and i get to see people enjoying what we've been working on for them. that's really fun. >> and that parade gets underway at 1030 sunday morning. greg, as you well know, that is a four hour long extravaganza. we gave you a little preview tonight of what those floats look like, but nothing beats the real thing. getting to see them out there on the route and to get to see the reaction of the people seeing them. it's just a great show. we're live here in san francisco. christian captain, ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, some incredible work that will be on display. christian. thank you. and here's a list of other pride events saturday. there's the annual dike march from dolores park south to the castro, plus the first day of the city's 55th annual pride celebration takes

over civic center. then on sunday, the festival's second day kicks off also at 11 a.m, with as many as a million people expected to attend san francisco's pride parade, it's set to be one of the largest lgbtq celebrations in the world. city crews are putting up barricades along the parade route in san francisco. mayor daniel lurie says that law enforcement is focused on safety and, quote, making sure everyone feels safe and free to be themselves. city police say they are in contact with both state and federal officials to monitor any possible threats, and you'll be able to watch a portion of the san francisco pride parade on sunday. you can watch it from 11 a.m. to noon on sunday on the fox local app. that's a free download for your smart tv or phone. the u.s. supreme court has sided with a group of religious parents who want to pull their children from classrooms to avoid lgbtq plus storybooks. with the six conservative justices in the majority of the court reversed lower court rulings, the justices said a maryland public school district's refusal to

allow opt outs, quote, burdens parents first amendment right to freely exercise their religion. the decision is not a final ruling in the case, but the school district must allow opt outs while the legal challenge continues in a lower court. the supreme court also handed down a ruling on the power and limitations of lower courts, and whether or not they can issue nationwide injunctions to block an executive order from the president. as ktvu is jana katsuyama reports, this could pave the way for president trump to end birthright citizenship via executive order. >> on friday, the supreme court ruled that federal judges could not have broad powers to issue nationwide injunctions beyond their areas of jurisdiction. the 6 to 3 opinion did not rule on the underlying issue of birthright citizenship, and president trump's executive order trying to overturn the right to be an american citizen if born on u.s. soil under the 14th amendment. justices sotomayor, kagan, and jackson dissented. justice sotomayor writing, quote, the parents of

children covered by the citizenship order would be well advised to file promptly class action suits and request temporary injunctive relief. >> thanks to this decision, we can now promptly file to proceed with numerous policies that have been wrongly enjoined on a nationwide basis. >> in 30 days, without a nationwide injunction, the executive order would take effect in 28 states, but be on pause in 22 states that have filed lawsuits against the order, including california. >> for the people who've already filed in the geographies that are already covered by the courts that can stay in place, it just couldn't be expanded beyond those borders. >> in response, the asian law caucus in san francisco and the aclu pursued another legal path by filing a class action lawsuit. hours after the ruling. >> the class action lawsuit is still an avenue where you can get a nationwide injunction. and so that's what we're going to be doing. >> at a news conference in san francisco's chinatown, the great grandson of wong kim ark, who won an 1898 supreme court

victory on birthright citizenship, spoke out. >> what kind of nation are we to be with stateless children born to no country? the supreme court's ruling may try to erase our rights, but they cannot erase our voices. and we as americans need to speak out. >> every court that has looked at this issue has said that this executive order is unconstitutional. >> most likely that will be decided in october. in the next session. >> california attorney general rob bonta held a joint news conference online with other state attorneys general friday. bonta says there are tens of thousands of babies born in the u.s. every year who might be impacted, and judges have issued about 40 nationwide injunctions on other cases that could also be affected. reporting from the newsroom jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> san jose finally has a full complement of council members after anthony tordillo secured a runoff election win this week. now the attention turns to the

work ahead. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary is live in san jose's district three with more on that. jesse. good evening, greg. >> good evening to you and japantown. where i'm standing in downtown are two of the economic and cultural drivers of district three. it is a district where many residents say they are eager to move on from what's happened in the past with councilman omar torres and move forward with a council representative that is fully engaged. hours after anthony tordillo celebrated a district three runoff election win, the people who put him into office are already thinking about what comes next. >> we voted for anthony, so we're happy that he won the race. i'm relieved that district three will finally have some representation after almost a year. >> as a political newcomer says he's putting together his transition team to take over from interim council member karl salas. >> make sure that we can have a robust neighborhood outreach team and a team to handle all of our constituent concerns. >> two of the top concerns center around the condition of

unhoused residents on streets, parks and pathways in the district and housing. >> i'm hoping to see improvements in homelessness. i'm hoping to see improvements in crime response rates for smaller crimes that have been overlooked. >> district three has seen fluctuating crime stats since the covid pandemic. for example, violent crime is slightly up, while other crimes have dropped. the city changed reporting methodology in 2023, making year to year comparisons difficult. housing is another factor weighing on the minds of residents and business leaders. many are concerned about the impact five figure rents have on leaders ability to recruit talent. >> i want to go ahead and talk to him about the developments and things like that are going on right now, particularly the 188 saint james, which is just gotten out of, how should we say, litigation. ####. >> that high rise once called the silvery towers tarnished due to lawsuits and labor issues. it has a still to be completed section. and now new owners from new york thanks to a foreclosure

sale. alan marquez of the downtown association says dozens of units could come online by the end of the year. and then there's the bart expansion two and through downtown. the project is behind schedule and over budget. still, current plans call for a single bore, 53 foot wide tunnel being built beneath santa clara street. there are concerns altering the plans to save time and money could cost district three, both in the long run. >> if they go to the shallower single bore of a 40 something foot diameter, we will have to not only brace for the disruption of downtown, i think that will literally kill downtown if that happens. >> the election will not be certified until july the 24th, but the council is on its summer break the entire month of july, so the councilman will not be sworn in and seated until august. he promises to focus on economic development, affordable housing and of course, the problem with the unhoused here in san jose. we're live in san

jose's japantown this evening. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news. greg, back up the freeway to oakland and to you have a good weekend. >> yeah, a lot of issues on the agenda. jesse. have a great weekend to you as well. new details on a story we brought you earlier this month. officials have identified a man found shot to death while walking his dog in san leandro. the alameda county coroner says 47 year old ryan christie was found dead near euclid avenue and east 14th street, still clinging on to his dog's leash the morning of june 14th. officials are still working to determine a motive behind the shooting. the dog was not injured. the investigation remains ongoing. christie's death marked the city's first homicide of the year. a man has been arrested on suspicion of dui after a fatal crash on interstate 80 in albany early this morning. it involved a toyota camry, a big rig and a hyundai elantra. the crash sent the elantra off the eastbound side of i-80 at buchanan, where you can see it landed on its roof. the driver was declared dead at the scene. officers

arrested the driver of the camry on suspicion of dui. the freeway was temporarily closed but reopened a few hours later. the port of oakland has once again come up with a new name for the oakland airport. the port has adopted oakland san francisco bay airport as the airport's official name. last year, the port attempted to change the name of oakland international to san francisco bay oakland international airport. that name was blocked by a judge after the city of san francisco sued. the port says the new name puts oakland first and highlights the airport's central location in the bay area. in response to today's announcement from the port of oakland, the san francisco city attorney's office said, quote, we are just learning about this development and will assess any next steps to ensure san francisco international airport's trademark is protected. coming up honoring harvey milk, san francisco moves ahead with plans to celebrate the civil rights icon as his name is erased from a navy ship. and reckless and cruel. just some of the words

conference today with state health care and social service officials. newsom described the bill as the, quote, big, beautiful betrayal. he says it threatens to eliminate health coverage for more than 3 million californians, and cuts over $28 billion in medicaid funding to the state. the governor says the bill is focused on tax cuts for wealthy americans. >> $1.1 trillion of tax cuts for people making over half $1 million a year. how do you pay for that? well, they don't even pay for it, but they get close. you got food assistance to poor people. you got basic medical care, preventative care to folks. $715 billion just in the medicaid cuts that don't even get you to $1 trillion. you have a crisis with a crisis. >> the governor also described the spending plan as reckless, cruel and damaging to people across the country. governor newsom is suing fox news. the governor is seeking $787

million, the same amount fox paid the voting machine company dominion to settle a defamation suit. the governor accuses the cable network and host jesse watters of wrongly claiming the governor lied about a phone call with president trump about the white house activating the california national guard. governor newsom accuses fox news of re-editing images to deliberately mischaracterize him and harm his political career. the governor's attorney says he will drop the lawsuit if walters apologizes to him on air. we will note fox news in ktvu share common ownership. in a statement, fox news says, quote, governor newsom's transparent publicity stunt is frivolous and designed to chill free speech critical of him. we will defend this case vigorously and look forward to it being dismissed. defense secretary pete hegseth has made it official to rename the u.s. naval ship named after harvey milk. >> we are taking the politics out of ship naming. we're not renaming the ship to anything political. this is not about political activists. unlike the previous administration.

instead, we're renaming the ship after a united states navy congressional medal of honor recipient. as it should be. >> in a social media video, hegseth announced the renaming of the usns harvey milk to now honor navy chief petty officer oscar peterson. peterson died during the battle of the coral sea in 1942, and received the congressional medal of honor. an escort ship was named after him in 1943. reports earlier this month that the pentagon would take harvey milk's name off a ship outraged san francisco leaders and lgbtq rights leaders. milk served four years in the navy before being discharged for being gay. even as the federal government takes that action, san francisco city leaders have announced plans to build a memorial to gay rights pioneer and former supervisor harvey milk. ktvu john jack is live in san francisco at harvey milk plaza tonight with a look at a new tribute to milk's enduring legacy. john. >> hey, greg. yeah. the effort

towards making a more permanent tribute for harvey milk has been years in the making, and people who live here in the castro say it's about time. san francisco mayor daniel lurie announcing friday that a tribute to gay rights pioneer harvey milk has officially gotten the green light here on the corner of market and castro. >> it is a promise that we will stand firm in our values and ensure that the next generation knows who harvey milk was, what he stood for, and why he still matters today. >> harvey milk plausible stand in the heart of the castro, where milk lived during his groundbreaking time on the board of supervisors, and where the fight for gay rights largely took shape. milk would become a martyr in that fight. after being assassinated in 1978. >> i think it's great, you know, that here in the castro where, you know, he made his political career, that they're going to do something like this. >> i think that it serves as a reminder of what he did, really,

against all odds and the tragedy of his life. >> it's taken nearly 15 years for these plans to be set in stone after major donations. community partnerships like the friends of harvey milk plaza and even a voter approved $25 million to help make it all a reality. >> we have a lot of people who have worked for a long, long time to make this day happen. >> this moment is about more than bricks and concrete and construction. it's about continuing harvey's legacy and celebrating our city and our city's values. >> we're told community input was factored into the design. stories about the fight for equal rights will be told, and exhibits on the plaza will also celebrate harvey milk, the man, as well as other notable lgbtq figures. >> it is fitting that on this san francisco pride weekend, we are celebrating the moving forward of a public space that honors and supports this exact kind of fight. >> this moment of celebration

coming amid some anger over friday's announcement that the name of the usns harvey milk had officially been changed. organizers of the memorial blasting that move, noting milk did serve in the navy during the korean war. >> they may take his name off a vessel, but today and every day, harvey milk's legacy lives on. >> it's a legacy. castro residents of a certain age. hope stays alive for decades to come. >> i'm 64. i am shocked by how little young people know about our history. so i think, yeah, it's important that they kind of have this in their face. >> there's no more appropriate spot than marking castro. frankly, it's the epicenter of the one of the gay movements in the united states, you know, outside of new york. and so, i mean, if not, if not here, where? >> and construction is expected to begin on the memorial next year. it's supposed to be done

in 2028. greg. >> yeah. milk's memory endures in san francisco. john. thank you for that report. >> across the bay area this afternoon, temperatures soared near to 100 degrees in some spots tomorrow, only slightly better for those inland cities giving you a live look here over san francisco, where san francisco and an enjoyable one. mostly sunny skies and 70 degrees. the afternoon high on the peninsula. a warm day for you. redwood city coming in at 88 on the east bay shore, 77 in hayward and mid 90s for our hotter spot inland concord. you hit that earlier today and 91 reported in santa rosa. concord still baking at 93. you get closer to the bay, though. 71 in oakland, 59 in san francisco as temperatures tumble just an hour or two ago, 84 in novato, temperatures are up by nine degrees in novato. still, compared to yesterday at this time in livermore, ten degrees warmer and san jose by four, the partly cloudy skies will return

ran over an illegal firework, causing it to explode. the incident caught on video and tonight. the case is another reason investigators are warning about the dangers of fireworks

as we approach the 4th of july holiday. ktvu crime reporter henry lee has the story. >> surveillance video captures the moment groundskeeper juan carlos lopez ran over a large illegal firework at a high school in petaluma. >> i was scared, i was shaking. >> you can see lopez and his mower lifted off the ground a full 5 to 10in as a result of the blast. the motive is unknown. it's unclear if it was a prank, but lopez isn't laughing. >> it was not funny. he probably can get. someone can get hurt or something. yeah. it was a big explosion. >> it happened a little after 10:00 last friday morning near the front entrance of casa grande high school. the regular school year had ended two weeks earlier. lopez is a maintenance supervisor for petaluma city schools. he says he's lucky he wasn't hurt, especially because he was operating a gas powered mower and had already been mowing lawns on campus that morning for several hours. >> it could have been me. >> yes. fellow groundskeeper miguel giaquinta was told by lopez that morning to mow a different patch of lawn on the backside of campus. >> it's kind of scary, you know,

bay airport. the new name comes after the city of san francisco sued the port of oakland last year to prevent the previous name, san francisco bay oakland international airport from being used, citing trademark protections. the port says the new name puts oakland first. the san francisco city attorney's office says it is assessing any next steps. it's san francisco pride weekend in the city is buzzing ahead of the big sunday parade. police are gearing up for massive crowds and keeping everyone safe at the two day festival. several other events like marches and community gatherings are scheduled this weekend, ready to help locals and visitors celebrate pride month. you're watching ktvu fox two news at 630. markets on wall street ended the week higher on hopes that the trump administration could be making inroads on trade agreements with other countries. stocks ended the week higher in the nasdaq, and the s&p 500 notched record highs on optimism about future

federal reserve rate cuts and trump administration trade deals. the dow was up 432 points, a 1% gain. the nasdaq was up 105 to set a new all time high, and the s&p 500 added 32 points to finish above its previous record set in february. the market appears to be shaking off concerns over the israel-iran war disrupting the supply of oil. the u.s. and china have revealed some new information tonight about the agreement reached between the two countries on trade. china's government confirmed today that some type of arrangement had been reached but offered few details. treasury secretary scott bessent says china has agreed to make it easier for american companies to acquire rare earth minerals from china, which are needed for manufacturing and semiconductor production. in exchange, the u.s. will lower tariffs on chinese imports, though it is unclear by how much. >> part of the agreement was tariffs coming down and rare earth, rare earth magnets starting to flow back to the

u.s. they formed the core of a lot of our industrial base. >> we hope that the united states side will work with china to implement the important consensus reached. >> president trump has set a july 9th deadline for world leaders to make a deal. or he says tariffs will go up significantly. president trump says he has terminated all trade negotiations with canada. in a post on truth social, the president took exception to canada's digital services tax on u.s. tech companies. president trump says he will inform canada of the tariffs that will be levied on canadian imports in the next week. canadian prime minister mark carney said today that the negotiations on trade are complex, and that he expects they will continue. there is more heated rhetoric between president trump and iran's supreme leader. iran asserts that its military has, quote, delivered a slap to america's face by striking an air base in qatar. and president trump says the u.s. has delivered a decisive victory over iran. fox's mike tobin has more on the

conflict. >> we do not have understanding and control of where all of that material is. >> the world is still trying to determine the extent of the damage done to iran's nuclear program. as negotiations toward a broader peace deal continue. on friday, house lawmakers got a classified briefing, but most democrats say they still have deep concerns that the airstrikes might not have destroyed iran's supply of highly enriched uranium. >> there is, i think, frankly, very overoptimistic portrayal of what was and was not accomplished by this mission. >> but republicans tell a different story, claiming the intelligence presented in the briefing clearly shows significant damage to the nuclear facilities. >> president trump took a decisive action and it was successful. they severely hurt the nuclear program. >> the israeli military also held their own briefing on friday, announcing the end of their offensive operations in iran and releasing new footage showing the extent of the damage.

>> this victory opens up an opportunity for a dramatic expansion of the peace agreements. we are working on this vigorously. >> and while israel pivots back to the war in gaza, president trump is now working with america's allies in the region to advance a more comprehensive agreement with iran. he says the next round of talks will take place next week. >> i don't believe that they're going to go back into nuclear anytime soon. they spent over $1 trillion on nuclear and they never got it together. >> on friday, iran's foreign minister said his country is considering barring u.n. inspectors from visiting its nuclear sites. in tel aviv, israel. mike tobin, fox news. >> union workers rallied at ucsf this afternoon after the university announced dozens of job cuts. >> what's this about? [applause] what's this about? patient care. what's this about? >> the rally outside the parnassus campus comes as ucsf issued layoff notices to around 200 employees. rally organizers say the layoffs will have a devastating impact on patient

trial of sean diddy combs is coming to a close with his defense team delivering their closing arguments today. they accused prosecutors of creating a fake trial. overexaggerating diddy's recreational drug use and swinger lifestyle, calling it racketeering. diddy's attorney also poked fun at a high profile raid of his home, where agents seized hundreds of bottles of baby oil. much of the trial centered around combs's relationship with singer cassie ventura, his attorney, acknowledging domestic abuse happened but argued it was not sex trafficking. now it will be up to a new york city jury to wade through the case. >> i think that the elements do not fit. it's just it's going to take some creative arguments on the part of the prosecution. >> after receiving detailed instructions, the jury will start deliberating on monday. u.s. senator alex padilla is condemning the republican spending plan, which calls for making cuts to health care. padilla today joined other elected officials, doctors and health advocates to denounce the

budget bill. they say cuts to medicaid, which is known as medi-cal here in california, will have, quote, deadly impacts on californians health care. >> there is no way for the state to absorb these cuts. it will inevitably lead to people losing care and likely to cuts and services. and as we've heard about to hospitals and clinics potentially having to close their doors or reduce their services for the communities. >> a senate vote on the spending bill was expected this week, however, it's been delayed. senate republicans are now rewriting a key provision of the bill, which was deemed non-compliant by the senate parliamentarian. state senator scott wiener, who represents san francisco, has filed paperwork to run for congress. forms from the federal election commission show. wiener signed paperwork today to run in 2028 for the seat currently occupied by congresswoman and former house speaker nancy pelosi. as of now, congresswoman pelosi has filed to run in 2026, but her plans

trying to curb illegal fireworks ahead of the independence day

holiday. today, they announced the seizure of more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks at two locations in san jose. as a result of undercover operations, the first seizure happened on monday at a home on san antonio court with about 730 pounds of fireworks. information from that seizure led them to issue a warrant for a home on tanglewood drive, where about 1,350 pounds of fireworks were found. >> deal that we arrested. they also had, in addition to this, roughly 50 improvised explosive devices. these are also known as ieds and are highly dangerous. now, an ied is a homemade device and in this case they contained hundreds, if not thousands times more the legal limit of explosive powder. >> police say they also seized two rifles and a substantial amount of ammunition. 31 year old david benito carbajal and 52 year old juan rocha were booked for possession and distribution of illegal fireworks in similar operations happening in san francisco, where police say they
