in the castro today talking with people about this special tribute, and he also has an update on the timeline for completion. >> san francisco mayor daniel lurie announcing friday that a tribute to gay rights pioneer harvey milk has officially gotten the green light here on the corner of market and castro. >> it is a promise that we will stand firm in our values and ensure that the next generation knows who harvey milk was, what he stood for, and why he still matters today. >> harvey milk plaza will stand in the heart of the castro, where milk lived during his groundbreaking time on the board of supervisors, and where the fight for gay rights largely took shape. milk would become a martyr in that fight after being assassinated in 1978. >> i think it's great, you know, that here in the castro where, you know, he made his political career, that they're going to do something like this. >> i think that it serves as a reminder of what he did, really, against all odds and the tragedy

of his life. >> it's taken nearly 15 years for these plans to be set in stone after major donations. community partnerships like the friends of harvey milk plaza and even a voter approved $25 million to help make it all a reality. >> we have a lot of people who have worked for a long, long time to make this day happen. >> this moment is about more than bricks and concrete and construction. it's about continuing harvey's legacy and celebrating our city and our city's values. >> we're told community input was factored into the design. stories about the fight for equal rights will be told in exhibits. the plaza will also celebrate harvey milk, the man, as well as other notable lgbtq figures. >> it is fitting that on this san francisco pride weekend, we are celebrating the moving forward of a public space that honors and supports this exact kind of fight. >> this moment of celebration coming amid some anger over

friday's announcement that the name of the usns harvey milk had officially been changed. organizers of the memorial blasting that move, noting milk did serve in the navy during the korean war. >> they may take his name off a vessel, but today and every day, harvey milk's legacy lives on. >> it's a legacy. castro residents of a certain age, hope stays alive for decades to come. >> i'm 64. i am shocked by how little young people know about our history. so i think, yeah, it's important that they kind of have this in their face. >> there's no more appropriate spot than marking castro. frankly, it's the epicenter of the one of the gay movements in the united states, you know, outside of new york. and so, i mean, if not, if not here, where? >> now, construction is set to begin next year, with harvey milk plaza slated to be done in 2028. reporting in the castro. i'm john jack, ktvu, fox two

news. >> on sunday, the 55th annual pride parade will march down san francisco's market street. the parade guys have been busy now for months, building the floats that will glide downtown. we caught up with workers today as they were busy putting the finishing touches on the many displays, and they tell us the best part of all of this is getting to see how the public reacts to their beautiful and colorful creations. >> that's when i finally have a moment where i can relax, step back and take in all the work that we've been doing over the last few months, and that's that's when it's really the most fun for me. it's also when all the crowds are coming in and i get to see their reactions, and i get to see people enjoying what we've been working on for them. >> the parade kicks off sunday morning at 1030, starting at embarcadero plaza down market street, before finishing at city hall. now, before the pride parade kicks off, another special event is taking place tomorrow in san francisco. the dike march is officially back,

and that march and rally will return to dolores park for the first time in several years. the new organizers say that they are so happy to have this pride, this dike march and rally back, and they say that it will be better than ever with a lot of people planning to participate. joining me now live to talk about the comeback is celestina pearl, a member of the march interim steering committee. a really appreciate you joining me tonight. i know that you're really busy getting ready for tomorrow. i can see you there, so i appreciate you taking the time. how happy are you about being able to bring the dike march back in full force? >> well we're thrilled. it hasn't been happening since the pandemic, and so we are very excited for us to get to strut our stuff down the streets of san francisco as trans dikes, disabled dikes, elder dikes, young dikes, palestinian dikes.

and, yeah, just be out loud and proud. >> yeah. how what did it take to actually make this happen? i mean, how did you get the community involved here? >> well, it actually early on, about a year ago, just actually just before pride last year, rocket, who's our interim project manager, approached me and asked if i would be interested in being part of the organizing for dike. march 2025. >> yeah, i know that. >> it's been a whole year. >> yeah. and during that year, you guys got some community input. you heard from people there in the community about what they really wanted this march and rally to be like, why was it important to get that feedback? >> because we need to know that collectively we are deciding. values are. and who we are, what

what we are about and why we're marching. >> okay. so tell us what you've got planned for tomorrow. and how many people do you expect to show up? >> oh boy, i wish i, i wish i knew the answer to that. that would be amazing if we had maybe, i don't know, like, could be like 10,000 people. >> yeah. yeah. but but i know that there's music. there's going to be drag comedy speeches. i mean, really a whole a whole event that's planned. >> yeah, yeah, yeah, some fabulous mix. we've got some rock and roll. we'll have some folks from the community speaking. i'll be on stage speaking as foxy mary 2024, representing, representing my community and also the organization that i work for,

lion martin community health services for trans cis women, lgbtq two. plus, i run the naughty nurse mobile, which is actually right here next to me out on the streets of san francisco. so yeah, i'll be on stage talking a little bit about all of that. >> okay. can you tell us really quickly about how much does it cost to run the march and rally, and where does the funding come from? >> we got a lot of individual funds from a lot of individuals. we've been doing a lot of fundraising. we just had one last night at moby dick's. they had an event called moby dikes and that was really fun. we had an event at the eagle. we had an event at el rio. we've been having a lot of fundraisers. yeah, and a lot of our folks who are working really hard to get volunteers together. and yeah, a lot of hard work.

fireworks. and tonight we are hearing from a man who knows about the dangers. it's that groundskeeper who mowed over fireworks at casa grande high school in petaluma. so we first showed you this video of the incident right here last night. that is juan carlos lopez on the lawnmower. he was working last friday morning when he got quite the surprise. the firework was near the front entrance of the school when he ran over it. lopez was operating a gas powered mower and says he feels lucky that he wasn't severely

injured. >> we can get someone can get hurt or something. yeah, it was a big explosion. >> i mean, it's kind of scary, you know, because we do this on a daily basis and then all of a sudden this happens. so i guess now even cutting grass, you know, you can end up in the hospital. >> petaluma's assistant fire marshal says officials are reviewing the video to try to find out where the firework came from and how long it had been there. classes at the school ended two weeks ago. by the way, that blast on campus happened just three days after a teenage boy in petaluma was seriously hurt when a firework exploded in his hand. well, in san jose, police say they seized more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks and 50 improvised explosive devices at two homes. the first seizure happened on monday during an undercover operation at a home on san antonio court. 730 pounds of fireworks and ieds were recovered. the bus led them to issue a search warrant for a home on tanglewood drive, where

about 1,350 pounds of fireworks were seized. >> these people are distributing dangerous items. they could end up in the wrong hands. they could cause injury, major injury and potentially death. they could cause fires that could spread and damage property. >> police say they also seized two rifles, as well as a substantial amount of ammunition. 31 year old david benito and 52 year-old juan rocha were booked for possession and distribution of illegal fireworks. again, stay away from the folks. there is a reason why they are illegal. okay, let's bring in our meteorologist rosemary oroczo for a look at the forecast. the weekend is here, buddy. >> yes, and as we know, heather, hard to please everybody in the bay area. it's going to be really nice in san francisco. it's going to be a bit hot inland. i'll show you those numbers here. coming up. it was a hot one inland today. those numbers momentarily a live look here into san francisco where san francisco, 70 degrees this afternoon. that's an enjoyable

day. but then you take your eyes east. and 97 reported in antioch in the north bay, 91 over santa rosa. we will get into some cooler weather, but it's going to be gradual and it's going to be subtle. i'll show you that coming up in the extended forecast. we are still very warm for some of our inland cities. 90 degrees in concord, 81 in livermore. in the north bay we have 80 degrees in santa rosa. so if you enjoy the summer nights, we've got some out there for inland cities. meanwhile, you get closer to the water. a beautiful 70 in san francisco earlier today, but now a very chilly 56 right there in san francisco. san jose enjoying 72 for most. a warmer day, especially inland. and we are still up by nine degrees in novato, as well as concord, up by four over san jose. our winds are onshore through fairfield, a 14mph. oakland reporting 13. napa reporting 12 on the peninsula. we've got sfo

reporting 21. palo alto and mountain view reporting 13. so a little bit of a breeze out there as we settle into sunset. around 836 this evening under partly cloudy skies. tomorrow morning we'll start out with just a little bit of patchy fog inside the bay. partly cloudy at the coast as well as the possibility of some drizzle you can see here. then as we get into the afternoon going to peel back. we'll be partly cloudy at the coast. mostly sunny for the rest of us. temperature. the clouds will regroup and begin moving back across the bay by sunset. temperature-wise a low 50s to low 60s for most 54 to start your day in san francisco, but upper 60s in antioch. so you're not really going to cool down during the overnight hours. and temperatures tomorrow will be in above average once again for inland cities, including 93 in livermore, closer to the bay, 75 in oakland and 68 san francisco. so a gradual cooldown coming our way. we'll begin to fill it, especially by the back end of the weekend and into the first week. but we are looking at

airport. that name, though, was blocked by a judge after the city of san francisco sued. the commissioners say this new name puts oakland first and highlights the airport's central location in the bay area. in response to today's name announcement, the san francisco city attorney said, quote, we are just learning about this development and will assess any next steps to ensure that san francisco international airport's trademark is protected. san jose will soon have a new face on the city council, after the chair of the city's planning commission declared victory in this week's special election. anthony rose won the race to fill the district three seat. he was endorsed by mayor matt mahan, as well as former assemblymember evan low. trujillo says he's putting together his transition team now to get right to work. we talked with people in the district as well as business leaders. they say they are ready to have someone on the council representing them and helping address concerns about the homeless crisis and affordable housing, as well as other issues
