we're not trying to bother anybody, but we're supposedly the bad ones, you know. >> it was both party and protest at tonight's annual trans march. good evening. i'm greg lee. >> and i'm cristina rendon. tonight's march is considered one of the largest trans events in the world, and comes amid what advocates call an unprecedented assault on the rights of lgbtq plus community. >> and the city is shining bright tonight, literally, as we give you this incredible live look illuminates for mile laser, display of a rainbow flag shining above the fog over san francisco, stretching all the way down market street. >> ktvu amber lee is live on market street tonight with more from today's celebrations. amber. >> cristina, we're at the foot of market street, and let me tell you, san francisco is literally beaming with pride. illuminate the nonprofit that brings us the bay bridge lights puts on the rainbow lasers. organizers tell me this is the fourth year. it's part of the

celebration. earlier tonight, a huge turnout for the trans march. >> with trans rights are under attack. what do we do? stand up. fight back! >> resistance and revelry. on the friday of pride weekend in san francisco, thousands participated in the 21st annual trans march. >> i think all americans would agree that as americans, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is for everyone. >> members of the lgbtq community tell me pride events are about visibility and having a voice. >> it's just a sense of coming together, listening to one another and supporting each other as we tell our stories. >> a group ally for trans latina wore what they describe as angel wings, blue for transgender men, pink for transgender women. >> if you have somebody around you that is transgender, just spread love, support and don't judge because you don't know how many fights this this person has to fight to become who the person is. >> fighting. the transgender

[music] >> before the march, there was live entertainment at dolores park celebrating san francisco as what organizers describe as a beacon of trans liberation, a safe place. >> i am from iowa city originally, and i came to san francisco to transition. basically, you know, i feel more at home here. >> among the marchers were parents of transgender children. >> i have a trans child, and i am just here to fight for my child's rights and for all trans people out there. >> you're looking at a live picture of the rainbow lasers here on market street. it will be on from sunset to sunrise through monday morning. the pride celebration culminates with the pride parade on sunday, which will take place right here

on market street. greg and christina. >> it is always a beautiful sight to see that beam lit up on market street. amberleigh live in the city. thank you. and before the pride parade kicks off, another special event is returning tomorrow to san francisco. the dike march is officially back. the march and rally will return to dolores park for the first time in several years, and organizers say this one will be better than ever. there are new organizers this time around. celestino pearl, a member of the march interim steering committee, says the march is a time to unite its community. >> we're thrilled. it hasn't been happening since the pandemic, and so we are very excited for us to get to strut our stuff down the streets of san francisco as trans dikes, disabled dikes, elder dikes, young dikes, palestinian dikes and yeah, just be out loud and proud. >> a rally before the march starts at 11 a.m, and the march

itself is set for 5 p.m. >> organizers are putting the final touches on the colorful floats that will glide up market street as part of the annual pride parade celebration. the work on these floats began months ago. they will soon be towed out to pre-staging areas, and the parade will kick off sunday morning at 1030. it was pride night at chase center and thrive city, as the valkyries hosted the chicago sky in their first ever pride themed game. it was a party outside the arena with themed pride displays and booths inside in-game entertainment and programing celebrating the lgbtq plus community. the valkyries also delivered a win, beating the sky 83 to 78. we'll have highlights later in sports and stay with ktvu throughout the whole weekend. for more coverage of all the events happening in the bay area, including live coverage of the pride parade sunday morning on the fox local app, which is free to download for your phone or smart tv. >> this just in. we are learning that three police chases today spanning three bay area counties

are all connected. the first chase was in vallejo that started when officers spotted a car without a license plate driving recklessly. they stopped the chase before that car left vallejo, but a law enforcement helicopter started following it as it headed toward the east bay. authorities say the car drove through emeryville and oakland, hitting a number of cars before two suspects got out. one of them was arrested by oakland police, the other another vehicle and started another chase. that one ended when the suspect crashed in berkeley. he was taken to the hospital with major spinal injuries. authorities say they believe the car in the initial chase was stolen. another blockbuster ending to a supreme court term, with the united conservative majority ruling that federal judges lack the authority to grant a nationwide injunction, meaning they cannot block an executive order from the president. as ktvu jana katsuyama reports, this could pave the way for president trump's goal of ending birthright citizenship. >> on friday, the supreme court ruled that federal judges could

not have broad powers to issue nationwide injunctions beyond their areas of jurisdiction. the 6 to 3 opinion did not rule on the underlying issue of birthright citizenship, and president trump's executive order trying to overturn the right to be an american citizen if born on u.s. soil under the 14th amendment. justices sotomayor, kagan, and jackson dissented. justice sotomayor writing, quote, the parents of children covered by the citizenship order would be well advised to file promptly class action suits and request temporary injunctive relief. >> thanks to this decision, we can now promptly file to proceed with numerous policies that have been wrongly enjoined on a nationwide basis. >> in 30 days, without a nationwide injunction, the executive order would take effect in 28 states, but be on pause in 22 states that have filed lawsuits against the order, including california. >> for the people who've already filed in the geographies that are already covered by the courts, that can stay in place. it just couldn't be expanded

beyond those borders. >> in response, the asian law caucus in san francisco and the aclu pursued another legal path by filing a class action lawsuit. hours after the ruling. >> the class action lawsuit is still an avenue where you can get a nationwide injunction. and so that's what we're going to be doing. >> at a news conference in san francisco's chinatown, the great grandson of wong kim ark, who won an 1898 supreme court victory on birthright citizenship, spoke out. >> what kind of nation are we to be with stateless children born to no country? the supreme court's ruling may try to erase our rights, but they cannot erase our voices. and we as americans need to speak out. >> every court that has looked at this issue has said that this executive order is unconstitutional. >> most likely that will be decided in october. in the next session. >> california attorney general rob bonta held a joint news conference with other state attorneys general friday. bonta

says there are tens of thousands of babies born in the u.s. every year who might be impacted, and judges have issued about 40 nationwide injunctions on other cases that could also be affected. reporting from the newsroom, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news. >> new at ten state lawmakers today approved the $321 billion budget that pares back a number of progressive priorities to close a $12 billion deficit. to save money, the state will stop enrolling undocumented adults in medi-cal health care program, and it provides no new funding for cities and counties to address homelessness. there is a catch the budget will be void if lawmakers do not approve legislation by monday to exempt certain housing projects from review under the state's environmental quality act. prepare to spend more on gas starting next week. prices at the pump will rise almost $0.02 a gallon as the cost of building, improving and repairing streets, roads and highways continues to rise. ktvu tom vacar breaks down the gas

tax for us from a gas station cluster in san rafael. tom. >> want to show you something. it's really interesting. if you take a look over here on this single san rafael block, there are four gas stations and another one down the road with a 34 cent swing in prices. next week, all of them will have a small gas tax hike. the annual automatic state gasoline excise tax increases by 1.6 cents july 1st. that's why there's always a line at mill valley's arco. >> this place is good. this is the only place i get gas. there's one other place in mill valley, but everything else is like a buck more than this. >> professor severin borenstein, energy economist at uc berkeley's haas school of business energy institute, puts that 1.6 cent increase into perspective. >> the average household consumes about 1000 gallons per year in california, so a typical household is going to pay about

an extra $16 a year. >> this annual increase replaced a gasoline sales tax that overly benefited the state. when gas prices spiked. >> it was set in order to each year adjust so that it generates about the same amount of revenue. now, instead of it changing every week as the price of gasoline goes up and down, it changes once a year. >> drivers still don't like it when you consider overall gas taxes alone. that people pay will cost the average household $612 a year. beyond that, consumers may soon see another 13 to $0.17 a gallon increase to pay for an incentive paid to fuel providers to lower the carbon content of their fuels. >> particularly with what's going on in the middle east. gas, i guess, is going to be one of the worst things that trickles down to everything. >> it really seems unfair that something that is kind of like our life lifeblood, is being

last year, which would only be balanced because of what it calls one time strategies. >> a new chapter, potentially unfolding in the legal drama over the renaming of oakland airport. the airport now plans to change its name to oakland san francisco bay airport. last year, the port attempted to change its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport, but that name was blocked by a judge after the city of san francisco sued ktvu. zac sos is live at oakland airport, with more on the planned name swap. >> yeah, and as you heard there, the port of oakland says this new name quite literally puts oakland first and that it highlights the airport's central location here in the bay area. but a number of travelers and even a legal expert i spoke to say they still don't believe that this latest name is a good idea. >> i think it's ridiculous. >> danny walsh waiting for a ride home to walnut creek after flying in from colorado springs. not too happy about oakland airports latest attempt at a name change. airport officials

say they now want to be called oakland san francisco bay airport. >> it's oakland. it's not san francisco. yes, san francisco, san francisco, but this is oakland. so we should call it the oakland airport. >> the name change comes more than a year after a judge blocked an earlier attempt by the port of oakland to switch its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. a legal decision many travelers agreed with. >> i think the name should stay the same. that's what i think. >> the port of oakland at the time, saying the change would attract more non-stops by boosting awareness of the airport's location on the san francisco bay. the city of san francisco, in turn arguing the change would lead to confusion and infringe upon sfo's copyright. on friday, the port of oakland, acknowledging sfo's legal objections, emphasizing that this time it's putting, quote, oakland first. patricia scoggins left, scratching her head. >> i think it's a little funny.

it's, you know, so oakland, san francisco, san francisco, oakland, what's the deal? >> well, the back and forth may be amusing to some travelers. amir adibi, a san francisco patent law expert, still doesn't think the new name would hold up in court. >> legally speaking, the issue is that san francisco is still prominent. it's the second part. it's after it comes after oakland, but it's still there, and it's still confusing for a consumer when they see oakland, san francisco, >> sfo spokesperson doug yagel holding off on comment. but san francisco city attorney david chu saying that his office would be assessing any next steps to ensure that sfo's trademark is protected. as far as travelers steven is concerned. >> i would lend my support fully for that to keep it as oakland airport. >> so where do we go from here? of course, the port of oakland still needs to vote on this. that vote is scheduled to take place on july 10th. and then, of course, we'll have to see

[applause] what's this about patient care? what's this about? >> the rally outside the parnassus campus comes as ucsf issued layoff notices to around 200 employees. rally organizers say the layoffs will have a devastating impact on patient care. the union says that the university is prioritizing expansion over jobs. >> a spending crisis in the us. we're acquiring new hospitals. we're building new hospitals. we're trying to acquire some random college campus down the peninsula. like, why aren't we spending this money on our patients and on our on our staff? >> ucsf said in a statement that it made the difficult decision to eliminate jobs amid rising costs and reduced reimbursement for services. >> another small brush fire broke out in contra costa county

first homicide of the year. police say they have identified the people involved in the shooting, but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. the deadly shooting happened june 20th on overacker avenue near walnut avenue. investigators say one person was killed and another was injured. detectives say the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two groups of people over parking. fremont police say they presented the case to the district attorney's office, but so far, prosecutors have declined to file charges. tonight, we've learned the identity of a man found shot to death while walking his dog in san leandro. the alameda county coroner says 47 year old ryan christie was found dead near euclid avenue and east 14th street, still clinging on to his dog's leash the morning of june 14th. officials are still working to determine a motive

behind the shooting. the dog was not injured. the investigation is ongoing. christie's death marked the city's first homicide of the year. >> a scary moment caught on camera here in petaluma. right there, a school groundskeeper mowing the lawn ran over an illegal firework, causing it to explode. tonight. this case is another reason investigators are warning about the dangers of fireworks as we approach the 4th of july holiday. ktvu henry lee has the story. >> surveillance video captures the moment groundskeeper juan carlos lopez ran over a large illegal firework at a high school in petaluma. >> i was just scared i was shaking. >> you can see lopez and his mower lifted off the ground a full 5 to 10in as a result of the blast. the motive is unknown. it's unclear if it was a prank, but lopez isn't laughing. >> it was not funny. he probably can get. someone can get hurt or something. yeah. it was a big explosion. >> it happened a little after ten last friday morning near the front entrance of casa grande high school. the regular school year had ended two weeks

earlier. lopez is a maintenance supervisor for petaluma city schools. he says he's lucky he wasn't hurt, especially because he was operating a gas powered mower and had already been mowing lawns on campus that morning for several hours. >> it could have been me. yes. >> fellow groundskeeper miguel giaquinta was told by lopez that morning to mow a different patch of lawn on the backside of campus. >> i mean, it's kind of scary, you know, because we do this on a daily basis, and then all of a sudden this happens. so i guess now even cutting grass, you know, you can end up in the hospital. >> we don't know yet how or why that was obtained. >> petaluma assistant fire marshal amy seggie says firefighters are helping police find the source of the firework, including reviewing surveillance video. >> we have a zero tolerance policy here in the city of petaluma. we don't allow any fireworks. both those that are illegal and those traditionally considered safe. >> the campus explosion happened just three days after a firework exploded in a teenage boy's hand. in an unrelated incident here in petaluma. so as we approach the 4th of july holiday, a reminder to be

hundreds of mourners at the minnesota state capitol today to pay their respects to state representative melissa hortman and her husband, hortman. her husband, mark, and their dog gilbert are lying in state at the capitol in saint paul. they were gunned down inside of their home on june 14th in what's being called a politically motivated assassination. gilbert, their dog, was also shot and later euthanized. melissa hortman is the first woman and one of fewer than 20 people to lie in state at the minnesota state capitol. the alleged assassin was back in federal court today. the public defender representing vance boulter, told the court boulter hasn't slept in 12 to 14 days, citing poor conditions in the jail. the judge agreed to postpone the hearing until next thursday and remove boulter from the suicide watch unit. he's charged with murder, stalking and firearms offenses in connection with the june 14th killings of hortman and her husband, as well as a separate shooting injuring senator john hoffman and his wife.

>> defense secretary pete hegseth is officially stripping harvey milk's name from a u.s. naval ship. >> we are taking the politics out of ship naming. we're not renaming the ship to anything political. this is not about political activists. unlike the previous administration. instead, we're renaming the ship after a united states navy congressional medal of honor recipient, as it should be. >> he announced the renaming of the usns harvey milk to now honor navy chief petty officer oscar peterson. he died during the battle of the coral sea in 1942, and received the congressional medal of honor. reports earlier this month that the pentagon would take harvey milk's name off a ship outraged san francisco leaders and lgbtq rights leaders. >> milk was a pioneer for lgbtq rights and served four years in the navy before being discharged for being gay. today, san francisco city leaders announced plans to build a new memorial in his honor. ktvu john jack brings

us a look at the latest tribute to milk's enduring legacy. >> san francisco mayor daniel lurie announcing friday that a tribute to gay rights pioneer harvey milk has officially gotten the green light here on the corner of market and castro. >> it is a promise that we will stand firm in our values and ensure that the next generation knows who harvey milk was, what he stood for, and why he still matters today. >> harvey milk plausible stand in the heart of the castro, where milk lived during his groundbreaking time on the board of supervisors, and where the fight for gay rights largely took shape. milk would become a martyr in that fight. after being assassinated in 1978. >> i think it's great, you know, that here in the castro where, you know, he made his political career, that they're going to do something like this. >> i think that it serves as a reminder of what he did, really, against all odds and the tragedy of his life.

>> they may take his name off a vessel, but today and every day, harvey milk's legacy lives on. >> now, construction is set to begin next year, with harvey milk plaza slated to be done in 2028. reporting in the castro i'm john jack, ktvu, fox two news. >> governor gavin newsom is suing fox news. the governor is seeking $787 million, the same amount fox paid the voting machine company dominion to settle a defamation suit. he accuses the cable network and host jesse watters of wrongly claiming the governor lied about a phone call with president trump about the white house activating the california national guard. the suit accuses fox of re-editing images to deliberately mischaracterize him and harm his political career. the governor's attorney says he'll drop the lawsuit if waters apologizes to him on air. we'll note fox news and ktvu share common ownership. in a statement, fox news says, quote, governor newsom's transparent

publicity stunt is frivolous and designed to chill free speech critical of him. we will defend this case vigorously and look forward to it being dismissed. >> the president of the university of virginia is stepping down amid pressure from the trump administration. the justice department accused james ryan of negotiating in bad faith over dei policies. ryan had planned to stay through next year but will now leave in august, saying in a statement, quote, i cannot make a unilateral decision to fight the federal government in order to save my job. end quote. the trump administration has opened investigations into more than 50 universities in its campaign to end dei programs. >> it is crunch time for senate republicans working on president trump's tax and spending bill. they're hoping to vote this weekend. so the house's time to put it on the president's desk. by his self-imposed 4th of july deadline. the senate could hold its vote as soon as tomorrow, and house speaker mike johnson says his chamber will take 72 hours to review the senate's version before they take a vote. >> i'm not as set on getting

the silvery towers tarnished due to lawsuits and labor issues. it has a still to be completed section and now new owners from new york thanks to a foreclosure sale. alan marquez of the downtown association says dozens of units could come online by the end of the year. and then there's the bart expansion two, and through downtown. the project is behind schedule and over budget. still, current plans call for a single bore, 53 foot wide tunnel being built beneath santa clara street. there are concerns that altering the plans to save time and money could cost district three, both in the long run. >> if they go to the shallower single bore of a 40 something foot diameter. we will have to not only brace for the disruption of downtown. i think that will literally kill downtown if that happens. >> the runoff election will be certified july 24th, but the council will be on vacation the entire month of july, so tortillas won't be sworn in and seated until august. he promises

to focus on economic development, affordable housing and of course, the homeless problem here in san jose. in san jose's japantown, jesse gary, ktvu fox two news. >> another special election is already in the works in santa clara county to fill the vacancy of the county assessor. the office is in charge of property assessments for property taxes. the election will happen november 4th with a runoff if needed in december. potential candidates can start gathering signatures on monday. the current assessor, larry stone, announced his resignation on tuesday after serving in the role for three decades. a big boost for the project to bring bart to the heart of silicon valley, the vta announced today an extra 100 million in state funding for phase two of the project. the final phase includes extending bart service miles into downtown san jose and santa clara with four new stations. the $12.7 billion project was supposed to be completed near the end of this decade, but is running far behind schedule and well over
