tv KTVU Mornings on 2 FOX June 30, 2025 7:00am-9:00am PDT
7:00 am
leaders are marking this milestone and looking ahead to a new chapter. >> from ktvu. fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> welcome back to mornings on two. i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and i'm james torres. today is monday, june 30th, the last day of june. to take advantage of the hot weather this weekend. >> i was in hayward yesterday afternoon for a little opera in the park event by san francisco opera. we were sweating it out looking for shade. >> yeah. >> but it was. >> at least you weren't shivering. >> that's true, that's true. >> which we might normally be in san francisco. steve paulson but no june gloom this past weekend. >> it was nice. finally the sun came out and temperatures. you finally got a 70 degree temp. first one of the month and the only one on the month was on friday. but boy, there's a big fog bank here. and up above that around 15,000ft. we have some outdoor cues associated with a low that kind of engulfing the city there with the low cloud deck. so it will be cooler today. 50s on the temps here, 52 to 59 and a lot of high clouds streaming across. and they're associated with this system off
7:01 am
southern california. so a mix of fog, high clouds. there is a fine line on this band. if you're south of it or north of it, it's probably sunny or you get the fog. otherwise it's a mix of the fog and high clouds. and that's the system. the lightning strikes are the ones we're concerned about. so farther offshore. so by june that was it. it went pretty quick there. coastal low clouds, some higher clouds, a mix of low clouds, high clouds and sun. 60s, 70s, 80s to near 90 on the temps. here we'll go 64 to 90 on this panel. all right. south here at 701. and he tells us a bridge a freeway where. >> yeah, let's go to a freeway. first i want to start with interstate 80 steve. and interstate 80 westbound is a little slow. it's not it's not the worst i've seen for sure. but we definitely have a little slow traffic there. as you drive on the east shore freeway. now, i'm looking at some of these other bridges here. and for example, the san mateo bridge looks all right. heading out to the high rise, you can see that traffic is okay. the bay bridge is backed up to the maze. i do want to mention that if you are
7:02 am
driving on most of these commutes, they're just a touch lighter, but they're not completely light. highway four, for example, does have slow traffic. as you drive out toward the willow pass. grade 701. let's get back to the headlines, sal. >> thank you. the california budget includes more than $1 billion in funding and a $750 million loan for bay area transit. >> lots of eyes on it. ktvu ana quintana live in san mateo this morning with what this means for local transit service and why some say the money is desperately needed. >> yeah, so there are two pieces of this funding. really. there is a $1.1 billion that was previously promised funds. so then separate from that, there's also a loan and that's a $750 million loan. the idea is that this loan can kind of help hold over these transit agencies until next year, when politicians are hoping that there is a measure on the ballot, a tax measure that voters can then weigh in on. so
7:03 am
simply put, bus, rail and ferry systems need more money. ridership is down. covid emergency funds are running out. so bay area transit agencies like bart, ac transit, caltrain and muni are all struggling, many of them dealing with millions of dollars in deficits. and this could lead to services being slashed to avoid even larger deficits. so the current state budget could be the temporary relief they need to survive, until a 2026 ballot measure can provide more long term funding. the bill to add that ballot measure, though, still needs to be passed. there is going to be a press conference here in san mateo at nine this morning with some of the leaders that are supporting this funding. they are excited that bay area transit agencies get this funding and can kind of survive until hopefully they have this ballot measure, which would be next year. live in san mateo. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news. >> amanda, thank you. bart says
7:04 am
efforts to clean its trains and boost safety are starting to pay off. the transit agency's latest report reveals a 6% jump in ridership this past quarter, with bigger boosts on the weekend. bart says overall customer satisfaction is up to 84%. robberies and thefts are down. police complaints have dropped by more than half. despite this, ridership is still only about half of where it was before the pandemic, which raises questions about bart's financial future. since much of bart's funding is connected to fares. >> time now 704 this week, riding the train and ferries will start to cost a little bit more. starting july 1st, caltrans base fare will increase $0.25, raising adult fares to $4 and discount fares to $2. fares for golden gate transit and ferry will go up by about 3%, and muni fares for single adult riders using clipper or muni mobile will increase by $0.10. ac transit fares will also be going up for riders in the east bay. local cash fares will go up by $0.25 to 2.75, and transbay
7:05 am
fares will go up $0.50 to 650. it comes after the board of directors approved fare adjustment due to a projected $41 million shortfall. this is the agency's first fare adjustment since 2019. >> oakland city auditor is raising questions about the financing of a nonprofit that helps people with hiv or aids. h project of the east bay was created more than 40 years ago to help stop the spread of aids and hiv and find housing for patients. a whistleblower alerted the auditor's office that contracted services were not being delivered to clients. an investigation found more than $100,000 was missing. the organization was accused that it couldn't be reached by phone or email, and stayed closed during business hours. city eventually pulled the contract and asked for the money back. >> the san francisco aids foundation is reportedly laying off employees, as the nonprofit faces a nearly $6 million budget. according to the bay area reporter, so far, 19 people have been let go, including three executives. a spokesperson
7:06 am
says the layoffs are effective. as of tomorrow, the sf aids foundation has been facing financial problems for months, including a big decrease in fundraising. >> two san francisco city leaders are now urging blue shield of california to resolve its contract dispute with uc health. city attorney david chu and supervisor matt dorsey say the contract dispute threatens access to critical health care for thousands of san francisco city workers and retirees. negotiations between the two health care giants have recently stalled over reimbursement rates. if an agreement isn't reached by july 10th, ucsf health will be out of network for blue shield of california members. >> and days on the picket line. workers at children's hospital in oakland have returned to work this morning. the union says it decided to return to work after a federal judge denied the request for an injunction that would have stopped ucsf from moving forward with the plan to merge children's hospital workers into other ucsf departments. their strike ended this morning. the union is now trying to get a judge to order arbitration in the labor
7:07 am
dispute. that strike lasted about two weeks. >> happening today, vallejo city unified school district is fully regaining control after being under state receivership for 20 years. today, the school district will hold a joint news conference to discuss the challenges it overcame and what lies ahead. back in 2004, the district experienced financial collapse and needed a $60 million emergency loan to stay operational and entered state receivership last year. the school district fully paid off the loan. 707 here this weekend's massive pride parade and celebration in san francisco at a markedly different tone than in years past. attendees noted recent attacks on the lgbtq community, including recent court decisions to cut gender affirming care for transgender youth. others protested federal cuts to lgbtq nonprofits and programs. just last week, san francisco police arrested a 19 year old for vandalizing the pink triangle at twin peaks. >> it's heartbreaking because you see, like the lack of knowledge about what that stands for. it matters that we show up in numbers. it it shows the
7:08 am
people that don't really dare come out and walk around, yet it shows them that it's safe. >> through the weekend, there was a rainbow laser display shining for miles over market street, creating the largest pride flag image in the world. >> resistance was one of the main themes of this year's pride celebrations in downtown san francisco. the 55th annual san francisco pride parade is the largest pride parade in the world. this year's theme was queer joy is resistance. people from not just across the bay area but around the world enjoy the colorful floats, elaborate costumes, and live performers. attendees told us why pride is important to them. >> pride ourselves. nobody else will. so we celebrate ourselves. >> i brought my daughter. it's her birthday 16 so letting her know that it's okay to be different and embrace herself. >> i want to send it out across america. the rest of america to let us know. see what we do, how we do it with pride.
7:09 am
>> one woman told us she's attended every pride parade since the tradition began. mayor daniel lurie also marched in the parade. it was his first since becoming the mayor of san francisco. as pride month wraps up, make sure to see all the stories we covered over the past month. you can find them on our website and on our fox local app. >> time is 709. i've been looking at the middle of the east bay and i definitely can tell. just a little lighter there with 880 heading south. a little slowing in hayward, a little slowing in union city, but usually by now we have some more slow traffic. so i think we're getting some of that bump when it comes to 4th of july week. san mateo bridge has a little bit of slowing as well. nothing too bad, but there is definitely some slowing there. and if you are driving all the way out to the peninsula, it does look okay. it looks like the picture. freeze there. there we go. traffic is going to be okay. a little slowing on the dumbarton bridge as well. and of course we want to check in with
7:10 am
the bay bridge. that looks normal. it's backed up to the maze and the metering lights are on. 709 let's go back to the desk, sal. >> thank you. a federal judge clears the way for berkeley to remove a growing encampment at ohlone park. what the city must do before taking action. >> oakland airport wants to change its name again. why not? everyone is on board, and the legal challenges that could ground the effort. >> every day, over 1000 accidents happen in california. lives turned upside down in an instant. the aftermath of an accident can be overwhelming. medical bills, lost wages, and emotional trauma. at jacobi and myers, we control the chaos, providing legal and emotional support so you can focus on healing. with over 50 years of experience and $2 billion recovered for our clients, we fight for the justice you deserve. call jacoby and myers at one 8 million

7:14 am
received a $100 million funding injection, but it still falls about $1 billion short of its target. this boost comes from two grants awarded by the california transportation commission. the new line will connect the berryessa transit center to downtown san jose, with officials targeting a 2037 opening. and immigrant enforcement officers detained a drag performer in san francisco. according to sf pride, latinx performer hilary rivers was taken into ice custody wednesday. the organization says he was arrested outside san francisco immigration court after an asylum hearing, and is now in custody at an ice facility facility in mcfarland, which is just outside of bakersville. >> the city of berkeley now has the green light to clear a homeless encampment at ohlone park. a federal judge declined an effort by homeless advocates to stop the sweep, but ruled the city has to give three days notice before it happens. the city was planning on clearing the encampment before the lawsuit. park neighbors have reported health and safety concerns involving drug use and
7:15 am
violent threats. the encampment grew in april after the closure of another encampment at civic center park. city leaders have not announced a timeline for the sweep. >> a plan to bring in sheriff's deputies to help vallejo's understaffed police force is now on hold. the city council pushed back a vote to sign off on the extra patrols and now union pushback. a patrol car shortage and a last minute pension issue have thrown the deal into question. the sheriff now says he'll need even more deputies and cars to move forward. county supervisors say they will make a decision on july 22nd. >> oakland airport has a new name again. this time the port said. it's putting oakland first. the airport announced the new name is the oakland san francisco bay airport. last year, a judge blocked the airport from changing its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the airport says, including san francisco bay, and the name will help attract more passengers, airlines and routes. we ran the new name by some passengers who said they prefer oakland's old name and add. the proposals are
7:16 am
confusing. oakland. >> san francisco, san francisco, san francisco. but this is oakland, so we should call it the oakland airport. >> legally speaking, the issue is that san francisco is still prominent. it's the second part. it's after it comes after oakland, but it's still there, and it's still confusing for a consumer. when they see oakland, san francisco. >> the port of oakland, which manages the airport, will first vote on whether to adopt the name change. then a meeting is set for july 10th. let's get to some developing news here. a fast moving brush fire in southern california has spread over 1100 acres near homes and is prompting evacuations. the wolf fire down in riverside county, near banning, started just after three yesterday afternoon. some 750 people have been ordered or warned to evacuate. this is one of three fires that started over the weekend in riverside county. the cause is under investigation. >> all right, 716 your time. we'll send it over to steve paulson and talk about the weather for today and the week. >> warm to hot inland, but then much cooler by the time we get
7:17 am
to the third and fourth. we do have a band of high clouds over us, although i think there's a back edge to this already. underneath that, they're up around 15,000ft and broken out the cues. he sees what we call them, and underneath that is a fog bank. so you have the higher clouds going east to west, the fog going west to east. kind of interesting. don't see that all the time around here at the end of june. but you know we're almost transitioning into july. but this band of clouds is moving onshore. has a little bit of punch to it. and i'll show you in a second. the city 64. 52 today. average 6754. so below again on both. it will be a cool ending to june. no doubt about it. one day at 70 degrees this month that was it. and that was on friday and 24 days with highs in the 60s, five days with highs in the 50s, and the average high and the average low were all below. so if you thought it was cool, it was, except we ended with a lot of sunshine. santa rosa, livermore, palo alto, san jose. down we go, 80, 90, 80 and 80 on the forecast highs. so coming down a little bit that's the low. that's so she tapped in
7:18 am
a little bit of moisture. you see the circulation around that counterclockwise is tapped in some moisture and some lightning strikes most offshore. but because of that there's concern as the low kind of hangs around for about two days up in northern sacramento valley, mendocino county, lake county, you could get some high base thunderstorms. i don't think it will be rain, but the lightning is the big concern. 50 on most of the temps, couple of 60s, but mainly 50s on the temps 40s 50s up in the mountains. although reno 66 degrees, mount shasta 61 cloud cover. most of it has already moved offshore. but we'll mention a few high clouds, kind of maybe lingering, but it will be a mix of mostly sunny with some low clouds on the coast. this low hangs around till wednesday, then gets bumped out of here. so with that in place though, it is definitely increased the low cloud deck. but they're not making that big surge yet. but monday morning more fog, upper 80s low 90s inland but 60s and 70s closer to the bay. any travel plans to tahoe or even northern sacramento valley next couple of days? keep an eye on things. thunderstorms could erupt. i think tahoe is more in line around wednesday. thursday, we'll say by june. coastal low
7:19 am
clouds, some higher clouds and sun temperatures 60, 70, 80s, 90s. but after tomorrow, i think they start to all come down. you guys. oh, sal, we'll go to sal. >> yes, sir. steve. >> i forgot about you. i apologize, my friend. >> i'm right here. and you know what? right now, we don't have a lot going on on highway 24. let's start there. westbound looks pretty good from walnut creek as you head over to the tunnel. there have been no major problems here at the bay bridge. it is backed up as it normally is. it started off lighter. it might end off lighter, too. we'll see what the volume is like. san mateo bridge is crowded. but you know what? nearby, we don't have a lot of crowding in the south bay, and usually we do. so that could be something. and also 880 is just a touch less crowded. but i don't want to mislead you. it is slow. it's just not as slow as it was last week. and we're expecting a little bit of a drop off as we approach the 4th of july 719. let's go back to the desk. >> all right, so speaking of the 4th of july, a holiday weekend could mean a day on the water
7:20 am
for some. but even those who are strong swimmers can suffer cold water shock or drown in fast moving waters. doctors say there should be a dedicated adult watching young children around lakes and rivers. >> children can drown in less than two inches of water, young children in particular. so you want to make sure that as a parent or caregiver, you're being diligent to keep an eye on your children. if you're going to be playing with the water or around water, have a water watcher. so an adult who's designated to keep an eye on the kids, and if you're not going to be around the water, or if children are not supposed to be there, make sure that you've got a locked gate that latches. >> the american academy of pediatrics recommends swim lessons for children as soon as a family is able, as early as age one in some cases, and urges layers of protection such as supervision, proper lifejackets and cpr trained adults. >> a deadly ambush in idaho. two firefighters shot one of them critically hurt after responding to a brush fire. authorities now say the alleged attacker is dead. still, many questions remain. and a dramatic moment at beyonce's houston concert left

welcome back to mornings on two. 723. a live look at ktvu own backyard, the oakland alameda estuary. sort of cool and gray as we're waking up to another workweek or another week of summer vacation, if you're lucky. we had some warmth over the weekend, but according to our meteorologist, steve paulson, that is easing today. we'll bring him in in just a minute for a look ahead. >> in the meantime, at 724 this morning, idaho authorities say a suspected gunman who ambushed firefighters is now dead. a sniper shot and killed two firefighters and wounded another as crews responded to a brush fire near the northwestern part of idaho. this attack drew 300 local, state and federal law enforcement officers. a shelter in place lasted through sunday until a swat unit discovered the body of a man, believed to be the shooter. police say they found a gun near his body. >> we do believe that the that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush. and it was intentional.
7:25 am
and yeah, we do believe that he started it, and it was totally intentional. what he did. >> the hurt firefighter needed emergency surgery and remains in the hospital this morning. we're waiting to learn the identity of the dead suspected shooter. firefighters and law enforcement from across the region held a procession for the two firefighters killed in the ambush. that procession crossed state lines from idaho into spokane, washington, where a medical examiner will perform autopsies. the names of the firefighters have not yet been released. >> pop star beyonce was left hanging in the air when a prop malfunctioned during a. >> concert this weekend. a flying car prop got stuck and tilted her over the crowd in houston. this is what happened during one of the final songs of her concert. the singer asked the crew to stop the show. the car with beyonce inside was slowly lowered back to the stage. in the end, no one was

hurt. >> but that scary thing to see. your hearts are racing, no doubt. >> you have one of the world's most valuable pop stars in your hands in those cables. let's. let's take this. >> one dangling from a car. yeah. >> all right, warriors, jonathan kuminga is a free agent. after the team made a one year, $7.9 million offer to keep him starting today. other nba teams can make offers, but the warriors will have the chance to match any deal. the 22 year old averaged 15 points last season and made an impact in the playoffs. general manager mike dunleavy says both sides want to reach an agreement soon, but they're ready to be patient. [music] empty office buildings could be the key to adding thousands of new homes in san francisco. why? red tape and zoning rules may be standing in the way, and the push to do something about it. president trump's tax and spending bill today with tight votes and heated debates looming, the crucial decisions lawmakers are facing as the clock ticks toward this weeks deadline. >> from ktvu, fox two news this is mornings on two. >> it's a monday. we welcome you to mornings on two. i'm james torres. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. it is june 30th. we are wrapping up a cooler than usual june. let's run over to the weather center and see what steve paulson might see on the horizon. >> well, it's going to cool down for the fourth, i can tell you that. significantly cooler. but today, if you're inland, it will still be upper 80s to near 90. band of higher clouds kind of drifting across, although it looks like we're you know, we're on the back edge of that. but the low clouds are there, no doubt about it. much bigger fog bank than we've seen over the weekend, that's for sure. 5060 on the temps here. low mid to low 60s already here. and that's the higher clouds right there associated with a low. but again it looks like this initial band is about ready to move offshore.
7:31 am
been some lightning strikes. therein lies the concern especially to the north for possible fire concerns but not over us. that's it. by june, coastal low clouds, some higher clouds. mostly sunny inland. it looks pretty good here. mix of sun, low clouds, temperatures anywhere from 60 7080s to near 90 degrees. all right. south here at 730 in the morning on a monday. and the traffic is. >> it's a little better than usual, steve, i want to point to the east bay and start there, because i can see that 880 is still slow heading south, but it is going to be slow. but i think the but was it's lighter. you can see some areas of empty traffic and some areas of pretty good traffic between hayward and union city, and it's getting better by the moment. also dublin to 680 pleasanton. and i do think that this week is going to be just a little different as we get close to celebrating the 4th of july. this is a look at westbound 24. you can see that traffic is okay. and if you're driving to the bay bridge that is still backed up to at least the macarthur maze. 731 let's
7:32 am
get back to the headlines. >> all right, sam, thank you. talking about politics on a nationwide scale. taking a live look inside the capitol building on the senate floor. this is where this morning, the senate will take on president trump's tax cut and spending bill. some of those conversations starting just about an hour ago, the bill narrowly clearing a procedural vote late saturday on a 51 to 49 count this morning, amendments to the proposals on the bill and quicker votes will begin. debate is growing as democrats hope to stall the bill out, and issues voiced include tax cuts, trimming of medicaid money for states and work requirements for food benefit eligibility. >> we're going to have a debate worthy of a great country. we'll have what they think and what we think, and we're going to vote on this bill in the coming days, and i'm excited about that. i've worked a long time. >> republicans in the senate maintain a 5347 advantage, meaning they can only afford to
7:33 am
lose three votes. vice president jd vance could break the tie if need be. president trump is pushing lawmakers to get the bill on his desk by this friday, the 4th of july. >> some republicans say they're split on the president's spending plan because of its impact on the national debt. the nonpartisan congressional budget office calculated the current senate package would add another $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. supporters say president trump's goal is to cut taxes and boost the economy, which in the long run would reduce the deficit. opponents fear the long term fiscal consequences are more likely to happen. >> a plan to sell a huge chunk of public land has been cut from the tax and spending bill after bipartisan backlash. utah senator mike lee announced he is pulling his plan, which would have put over a million acres of public lands throughout the western u.s. up for sale. he said the proposal was meant to make the land available for building housing, but it faced bipartisan opposition from conservationists, as well as groups such as hunters and fishermen. >> president trump's spending

bill is expected to be among the topics discussed at a town hall meeting today, hosted by east bay congressman mark desaulnier. we'll also touch on the situation in the middle east and recent supreme court decisions. desaulnier has been critical of president trump's unilateral decision to launch attacks on iran and the way the administration informed congress. the town hall in antioch set for tonight at 630. time now is 734. happening today, california lawmakers plan to vote on a bill that's aimed at speeding up housing construction. the proposal would exempt many types of urban development projects from from review under the california environmental quality act, or sequa. some lawmakers argue that ceqa has been used to derail housing projects, even the state's high speed rail project. governor newsom says his signature of the state budget will be revoked if the bill isn't passed. the state budget, signed by the governor over the weekend cuts taxes for veterans completely, funds free school meals and more. >> 734 your time. turning empty office spaces into homes could help ease san francisco's housing crunch. axios reports.
7:35 am
an analysis by the kaplan group, a business debt collection agency, found the city's vacant office buildings could produce more than 61,000 additional housing units. san francisco is still struggling to rebound from the pandemic. more than a third of office buildings are still empty. and researchers say rezoning and construction laws are a big barrier to the extra housing. mayor daniel lowry says he wants to change housing codes to make the conversions easier. >> the alice b toklas lgbtq democratic club held its annual pride breakfast at the hyatt embarcadero ballroom. organizers say every year, the event supports the organization's year round work and brings the city together for the largest political pride event in the country. the club is the nation's oldest queer democratic club. it was founded in the 70s, right after the stonewall uprising in new york. >> not a party, it is a protest. and so it's a celebration of just the fight. thinking back on stonewall, thinking back on our trans brothers and sisters who have lifted us up, it's
7:36 am
important to just stay grounded. >> the organization says it works to transform politics at the local, state and national level by identifying and electing candidates who support their cause. during this pride month and beyond, ktvu is bringing stories of those in the lgbtq plus community. you'll see them here on the air, our website, and the fox local app. >> bay area police departments will be on the hunt for illegal fireworks this weekend already. officers in east palo alto issued a $1,000 citation for illegal fireworks. police say when responding to a call, they found those fireworks in the bed of a truck. everyone at the scene denied responsibility. officers ended up citing one person in the group. even in cities where some fireworks are legal, only those deemed, quote, safe and sane fireworks are allowed. but in all, about a handful of bay area cities, all fireworks are considered illegal. >> this 4th of july, there won't be any fireworks on the peninsula. foster city canceled its display due to construction.
7:37 am
redwood city is switching to a drone show instead of fireworks. officials say safety cost and environmental impact drove the change. redwood city's drone show starts at 930 following an afternoon parade. foster city's festivities wrap up by 4 p.m. if you want to see a fireworks show. the closest ones will be in mountain view or san francisco. >> fireworks are cool because of the popping and the loud noises and what it can produce, but a drone show is very cool. hundreds of drones flying around all lit up and creating all these shapes. that's something to look forward to too. all right, 737 let's bring in sal castaneda from our traffic center. >> all right, james, good morning to you both. we are going to start with the bay bridge toll plaza. and that's what a lot of people want to know, because this is kind of a temperature of the morning commute. i can tell it's already beginning to get lighter. you can see the end of it. and if you can't see it, i will point it out to you. it's kind of right there at the right there at the end. see, you can tell. and also that line over there is
7:38 am

7:50 am
a little different. now what about the weather? a lot of people want to know on the 4th of july week what's it going to be? >> so do i. >> yeah. >> it will be cooler. so it will be much cooler. all right. we do have a band of clouds over us. most of these look like they're clearing, but the fog underneath that is definitely made a bigger push here. so the higher clouds associated with the low, which is off of southern california. it will be hanging around for a couple of days. so high clouds you know, get some clears, then you get some more back. i think that's kind of the way it's going to work, but there's plenty of fog. san mateo coast down to santa cruz. so i mean, they are back into the june gloom to end the month, that's for sure. up in the mountains, truckee already 59, reno 7264, in minden, south lake tahoe at 50 as well. and you can see that's the cloud cover. most of it is pushed already offshore. looks like there's a back edge. doesn't mean they can't fire up and pop up later. some lightning strikes associated with that, which is why there's concerns for fire concerns, especially north and east, not so much over us. and again, the lower layers of the atmosphere are incredibly
7:51 am
dry, so it would be doubtful anything develops for us. the low you can see it spinning there just southwest of the bay area. it will be here through probably tuesday night, wednesday. then a system will come along and bump it out of here. it's called a kicker and that will really usher in a cooler pattern. but if you're on the coast and bay, cooling has already begun, if you're inland, it will still be upper 80s to near 90. maybe some lightning to the north. a couple forecast models are kind of flirting with santa rosa, maybe being in that mix tomorrow, not today. so more likely to be northern sonoma county, mendocino county, lake county. but the majority of this will be outside my forecast zone. but we'll mention it northern sacramento valley if you're heading up also tahoe and truckee, especially on wednesday and thursday. by june that will be it. this is it. coastal low clouds, a few high clouds, but a mix of sun, low clouds, breezy to windy at times. there's not a roaring delta wind or anything but 60s 70s, 80s to, if you're far enough inland, not enough fog influence yet still near 90. i do think, though, the next couple of days will start to drop. then we'll really drop thursday, especially friday on the fourth. that will be a big cool down there james. >> thank you steve. well,

8:14 am
on those buy now, pay later loans the same way you would with a car payment or a mortgage payment or a credit card payment. those on time payments for buy now, pay later loans are going to start being factored into some credit scoring formulas with fico, which is the biggest credit scoring company in the states. and it's going to be a slow rollout because not all lenders use the same most updated credit scoring formula. so it may take a while before we see the full effect of this, but it's a significant change for sure. >> buy now, pay later has been around for a while. it only now is going to be counted. is this sort of a catching up to the way we use and spend money? >> very much so. the fact that buy now, pay later hasn't been part of credit scoring formulas to this point means that there is a big blind spot when it
8:15 am
comes to credit scoring and people's actual financial situation. and it's a significant thing for consumers because it means that the good that they do isn't necessarily being counted. but it's also a really big deal for lenders because lenders aren't getting the truest view of just how risky or safe a borrower is. if you don't include buy now, pay later. >> do you know what percentage of people who use buy now, pay later? stick to the terms. don't pay any interest or penalties versus the other group that that really gets caught. >> according to our latest reported lending tree, about 40% of buy now, pay later users paid late in the past year. and that's a really big number. and about three fourths of those were only late by about a week or so. so it's not late enough
8:16 am
where it would impact your credit score or appear on a credit report once once credit scoring formulas start including this stuff, but it is late enough where you would incur a late fee, and that's a significant thing. >> so for people who use buy now, pay later, and feel like this is someone coming into the house and opening the closet doors, whereas they used to just kind of look out at the living room and say, okay, it's clean. what should those people do? >> well, it's just important to know yourself when it comes to buy now, pay later, because these are really appealing because in part they're easier to get and they're often interest free, but because it's really easy to get, it can be pretty easy to get out over your skis a little bit and overspend and get yourself into some trouble. so just make sure you understand what you're getting into and you're confident in your ability to pay that loan

highs in the 60s, five days with highs in the 50s and 170. that was on friday. was that the warmest temp so far? no. there was an 82 in may, but for june there was only one day of 70. and that was last friday. santa rosa, livermore, palo alto, san jose arrows are all down today. 80 still warm to hot though, for if you're well inland. but most locations are taking that little dip now associated with that low. look at all the lightning strikes offshore. that's where we hope they stay. stay offshore. but because they're there, at least in the vicinity, that's why there's red flag concerns today and tomorrow. possible lightning again these would probably be dry systems. there's just too much dry air. but the lightning can cause issues. northern sacramento valley also the motherlode i would think including the sierra as well. especially we get to tuesday and wednesday in mendocino county. lake county 5060 on the temps, the inland areas beginning to head them up and move them on out. you can see the big fog bank though in the higher clouds going east to west, fog going west to east, a lot of fog, low clouds on the coast, san mateo coast down to
8:20 am
santa cruz and even monterey. 59 bookends truckee, south lake tahoe, already 75, in reno, carson city 72. plenty of activity offshore. that's let's keep it out there. we don't want it over us, that's for sure. but something to watch next couple of days until that low gets bumped out of here, which will be on wednesday, from a system which will usher in a pretty significant cooling trend. but for today, more morning fog, that's for sure. near 90 for some inland but lightning possible to the north. and you can see it kind of lights up here. northern sacramento valley also over south lake tahoe markleeville this will be going forward into the week, middle of the week to the end of the week. by june, that boy went fast and the coastal low clouds, a few high clouds, but mostly sunny inland. partly cloudy by the coast. anywhere from 6070 to 80s to near 90 on some. i think after today there will start a slow turn down and really start to cool down. thursday and especially on friday the fourth. >> steve thank you. >> 820. >> coming up, spotify's. >> discover weekly feature is celebrating ten years this morning how the music platform is marking the milestone and how

sunshine now, but that's a bigger fog bank than we've seen in a while. so either sun, maybe a few lingering high clouds, but mainly low clouds. look at all those lightning strikes. but again, they're offshore associated with that low which is tapped into moisture. but because there's some to the north and also east and concern for red flag warning for the next couple of days. but this is it for june. coastal low clouds, a few high clouds. mainly sunny inland, but that coastal low cloud deck is going to cool down many. so we'll go 60 70s to low and upper 80s for a few. all righty. sounds here all sudden. got quiet. is that still the case or somewhere else you want to go? >> yeah. it's quiet. we do have some pretty good looking commutes out there right now. the bay bridge is number one. look how light it is. although there is some more slow traffic at the metering lights, but it's pretty light. there have been no major issues. i want to mention that if you are driving on the golden gate bridge, that looks pretty good. also, if you're driving in san francisco, you haven't talked a lot about it because it's been a little lighter than usual. there's some slowing on northbound 101, but the peninsula looks pretty nice.

831. let's get back to the headlines. >> sal castaneda. thank you. now to that developing news out of capitol hill, where this morning the senate has began a marathon voting session on president trump's tax cut and spending bill. the bill narrowly clearing a procedural vote late saturday on a 51 to 49 count. debate is growing as democrats hope to stall the bill out. issues voiced include tax cuts, trimming of medicaid money for states and work requirements for food benefit eligibility. for insight on what lies ahead for the local economy if the gop tax bill passes today, we're joined by brett ryan, senior u.s. economist at deutsche bank. mr. ryan, thank you so much for being with us this morning. >> great. thanks for having me. >> what's the reality that this bill actually meets its 4th of july deadline? that's when president trump says he wants to have it on his desk and signed. >> yeah, i think it seems that they have a decent chance. it will depend, i think, on on what the deficit hawks in the house want to do or, you know, if they have issues with the senate
8:33 am
bill. so i would give it a 50, 50, 50 shot either way. i mean, it's going to pass, you know, either this week or, you know, a few weeks after the july 4th recess. >> what kind of amendments do you think republicans will agree on with that? democrats may suggest? >> not very many in terms of what democrats are suggesting. i think it's going to be a very much a partizan affair in terms of a party line vote, and it's going to be very tight. as such. >> we see amy klobuchar right now on the senate floor. we know democrats are going to try to stall the bill out. what do you expect will come from democratic party? what will they say? and ultimately, what is their goal? do they want to kill this bill? >> well, they can't kill the bill. the reconciliation process makes it a simple majority. so their point is going to be to try to highlight the distribution, the distributional analysis of the tax bill and claim that this is, you know,
8:34 am
tax cuts for, for the top income quintiles that are funded by cuts to medicaid and other programs for the lower income folks. >> mr. ryan, what's what's this going to do to people like you and me and our wallets and our finances? what is it that some of these democrats are worried about? and what is it that these republicans are trying to tout? >> yeah, i think one of the things that has been a big issue is the salt cap increase and the salt cap was raised to 40,000 in the senate bill after, you know, haranguing in the house. however, it expires in 2029. so it's a temporary raise that then goes back to 10,000. so for high tax states such as california and new york in new york, it's a temporary positive for individuals. but that positive does expire within the next 4 or 5 years.
8:35 am
>> i want to talk about the vote count here, because republicans can only stand to lose about three votes to make sure this passes through, and that's still including a tie breaking vote from vice president jd vance. thom tillis, the gop senator from north carolina, said republicans are about to make a mistake. he joined rand paul, another republican, voting against advancing this bill. what kind of message do these two republicans send? and is it significant enough to prevent this bill from moving forward? >> it's not significant enough to prevent the bill from moving forward. i think those are two that we're always, you know, counted, counted to be noes. and, you know, from rand paul's perspective, it's very it's deficit issues. you know, you have of the 1.3 trillion in spending cuts, you have 1 trillion of that coming in 2029 and beyond. so it's debatable whether whether they ever happened. i mean, this is a bill that sets up the tax cuts are
8:36 am
loaded up front. the spending cuts are loaded up in the back of the bill. and that calls into question whether you're ever going to see, you know, reasonable fiscal reforms here to rein in deficits. >> all right. brett ryan, senior u.s. economist at deutsche bank, thank you so much for having the conversation with us this morning. >> cheers. >> thank you. thank you. >> 836 your president trump spending bill is expected to be among the topics discussed at a town hall meeting today, hosted by east bay congressman mark desaulnier. we'll also touch on the situation in the middle east and recent supreme court decisions. desaulnier has been critical of president trump's unilateral decision to launch attacks on iran and the way the administration informed congress. the town hall in antioch is set for tonight at 630. new this morning, the trump administration accuses harvard university of failing to protect its jewish students from harassment. the government is now threatening to pull all funding from the school if corrective measures aren't taken. a federal task force sent a letter to harvard today concluding the university didn't

8:39 am
blocked the airport from changing its name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the airport says including san francisco bay in the name will help more passengers, airlines and routes. we ran the new name by some passengers who said they prefer oakland's original name, and they say the proposals are just confusing. >> oakland. it's not san francisco. yeah, san francisco, san francisco, but this is oakland, so we should call it the oakland airport. >> legally speaking, the issue is that san francisco is still prominent. it's the second part. it's after it comes after oakland, but it's still there, and it's still confusing for a consumer. when they see oakland, san francisco. >> the port of oakland, which manages the airport, will first vote on whether to adopt the name change. that meeting is set for july 10th. >> happening today, vallejo city unified school district is fully regaining control. local control, that is, after being under state receivership for 20 years. the school district will hold a news conference today to discuss challenges it overcame and what lies ahead. back in

2004, the school district experienced a financial collapse, needed a $60 million emergency loan to stay operational, and entered state receivership last year. the district fully paid off that loan. 840 here for some, the 4th of july weekend means a day on the water. even those who are strong swimmers, though, can suffer cold water shock or drown in fast moving waters. doctors say there should be a dedicated adult watching young children around the ocean, lakes and rivers. >> children can drown in less than two inches of water, young children in particular. so you want to make sure that as a parent or caregiver, you're being diligent to keep an eye on your children. if you're going to be playing with the water or around water, have a water watcher. so an adult who's designated to keep an eye on the kids, and if you're not going to be around the water or children are not supposed to be there, make sure that you've got a locked gate that latches. the academy of pediatrics recommends swim lessons for children as soon as a family is able, as early as age one. in some cases,
8:41 am
it also urges layers of protection, such as supervision, proper life jackets, and cpr trained adults. >> all right, time now. 840 a really beautifully nice warm weekend this past weekend, but the 4th of july might be a little cooler, steve. >> a lot cooler the way it's looking. that's the way everything is shaping up right now. but over the weekend. yeah. end of june heat here. kicked in for the inland areas. wasn't too bad on the coast, but at least they had sunshine. concord going back to thursday 87 then was all 90, friday 95, saturday 97 and sunday was 95. going about 88. today should ease back 88 to near 90. santa rosa down 5 to 80, livermore 93 to 90, palo alto down to 80. in san jose from 82 to 86 8452. in the city, another day where we're below on both. so june will go down as a cool month below average for sure. 93 the 1996 record high of 47, 1908. the record low had a lot of bands of high clouds. they've pushed off. there's lots of thunderstorm activity or lightning strikes well out in the pacific, but i think we're about done with the higher
