york and trenton. this goes to say if you are planning your morning commute this morning things on the new jersey turnpike are slower than normal, things at trenton transit stations will be busier and more pack this morning so you do want to plan accordingly to that. also associated with the derailment chestnut hill west has been suspended for september, trenton line has been suspended so just give yourself some more time this morning. we obviously will continue to keep you updated throughout the the course of this morning as they continue to investigate a this time. in regard to the rush we are not dealing with much, a lot of it just has to do with what we are dealing with the amtrak derailment. i will take a step back to give you another look at this checklist to take this in, so this morning bees and continue to plan accordingly. if you are traveling right now using the new jersey river line, that is looking okay but right now big story is amtrak. once again it has been suspended between philadelphia and new york, modified schedules between d.c. and philadelphia not only that but
4:05 am

4:06 am
well. what you will notice more than anything first and foremost is fact that it is will cooler, but because we have that wind out there red flag warning will be taking effect across the state of new jersey, later today, foreign hansed fire risk. with that said, even though weather generally speaking is pretty pleasant with that wind and lower relative humidity will increase our fire risk, any wild fires that start will spread easily. the the weather will not cause any fires but you have to be careful with cigarette butts and the like as you are disposing of those things. be very smart about it. here's the current wind flow and speed. it is basically straight up out of the northwest at this point, from ten to flirting with 0 miles per hour. we will note that is breeze for sure and it is a running theme all day to day. sixty-three is the current temperature at philly international. not terrible. when we have that wind it definitely is noticeably cooler by comparison and through north and western most
4:07 am
suburbs we are already noticing the the drop on the thermometer. we are still expecting overall some comfortable air in place here today 70 degrees the expected high at philadelphia and with the sunshine overhead you'll need sunglasses as well but not worst idea to grab a jacket on the way out the door because you will notice it is cool tore day back over to you. amtrak's entire northeast corridor will be impacted today as recovery and investigation take place. >> here in philadelphia commuters at the 30th street station who had travel plans are facing a long day there is no doubt about that. that is where "eyewitness news" reporter jan carabao joins us now, good morning. >> reporter: ukee and erika, good morning. you may see a lot of on time behind me here on the big board at 30th street station at amtrak train information saying a lot of on time markings, but what you won't see right now any services between philadelphia and new york. that service has been suspended, a lot of people,
4:08 am
trying to get new york hopping on buses. earlier this morning amtrak released a statement in response to the deadly train derailment are sad end by loss of life from train 188 and as a result, amtrak has suspended northeast corridor services between philly and new york. as vittoria mentioned new jersey transit will honor amtrak tickets between trenton and new york city. tolls day modified amtrak service will be provided between philly and washington and philly and harrisburg and transportation disruptions will last for some time. mayor michael nutter says there is no circumstance in which there would be any amtrak services this week through philadelphia he has seen those mangled tracks and down wires personally. beside the damage the the investigation is j beginning as transportation officials make their way to the scene this morning. those trying to make they are way to new york city overnight had a long wait here at 30th street station. we caught up with one group jumping on a bus bound for nyc just a few minutes ago take a listen. >> it is very stressful and i
4:09 am
just want to get home. >> reporter: how long have you been waiting. >> for a while, 11:30 or what time. >> about 11:30. it was 11:30. >> so how long have have you been on the train, you have been on a train for how long? >> from about 8:00 something to about 3:00 o'clock almost, 3:00 o'clock. >> reporter: so that group is hopping on the bus to new york city this morning a lot of people finding their way around the train derailment will likely have to do so for days to come as well that group i spoke to everyone there just fortunate that they are safe this morning and thoughts and prayers go out to the victim families. we're reporting live from 30th street station jan carabao for cbs-3 "eyewitness news". lets look live at the the scene, we have been talking about this train derailment, this accident happened last night between nine and 9:30. we are looking live from chopper three, many, many
4:10 am
injuries, five fatalities that we know of so far concussions, lacerations broken bones mayor michael nutter said he described it as an absolute disastrous mess. >> amtrak investigators are on the scene going through that wreckage because big question is are there more victims on that train. they brought in these huge lights to keep searching through that wreckage hoping to find more signs of life. this happening around 9:00 o'clock last night in port richmond. so many questions for family members because this can affect so many lives here in philadelphia you don't know which of your friend, family could have been on that train at this point. looking through every last bit of scrap metal to see anymore signs of life. >> if you or someone you know has questions about someone who might have been on that train or more travel information the number to call is 800-523-9101. that is 800-523-9101. once again you are looking at the the scene right now and i believe sunrise is around 5:45
4:11 am
this morning. we will see even more of the magnitude and scope of this horrific horrific mess. seven cars derailed, tracks were bent, every car, six cars and the engine car right off the track. we don't know if speed is involved what was involved happened, but ntsb will be coming in shortly this morning and try to begin the long process of trying to figure this out. absolute mess. >> this morning affecting not just those affected by those lives lost and injured but so many commuters have to change how they get to work and how they will get to various event to day vittoria will keep us up to date on the amtrak situation all morning long. >> we will keep going back to this scene throughout the morning as we get more information but we can tell you five people, five people are dead that number could grow, hospitals all across the area treating more than 50 patients injured in that crash we just showed you live. >> looking live at video we had overnight we spoke with
4:12 am
"eyewitness news" contributor doctor rob danoff about the the extent of these injuries. >> staff here treated roughly 25 patients here tonight. can you tell us the extent of the injuries that you have seen. >> so our trauma surgeons and all of our emergency medicine, extra doctors came in. they were seeing the most sick. so there was significant internal injuries bleeding, internal bleeding, loss of blood pressure, loss of blood concussions, a lot of muscular skeletal injuries. there were some very critical people but there were also people just like a bad extent where they are walking but they are sore. there was a whole gamut of injuries. >> doctor on the scene tonight assisting in this effort. >> working throughout the night to help them. we will follow latest on this amtrak tragedy. >> stay with "eyewitness news" throughout the morning. we will bring you latest information on the derailment, victims and your commute throughout the morning and again as we go live to chopper
4:13 am
three, looking at that scene as crews continue to sift through that ruble. we will be right back.
4:14 am
4:15 am
updating breaking news five people are dead and hundreds of people are injured, in this train derailment that happened late last night in port richmond. it happened at frankford junction where there is a very large curve hundreds of emergency
4:16 am
responders a assisted at this scene and the injured were rushed to temple, aria frankford, hahnemann, jefferson and einstein hospital. fire fighters got their, scanner chatter shows the scope of the devastation. >> notify amtrak to shut down the entire northeast corridor we have a major derailment. we have people on the track, a couple of cars overturned. classify this asthmas casualty incident. >> amtrak suspended service indefinitely between new york and philadelphia anyone seeking information about friend and relatives on that train can call a special hot line on your screen, 800-523-9101. this situation certainly impacting, so many folks this morning and our traffic vittoria. >> thanks, so much erika. absolutely just chilling listening to some of that voice over we were listening to there really depicting the the severity of the scene of this amtrak derail many. we will go to live chopper three to give you an idea what current conditions are looking like in the port richmond section. chopper three sort of zooms in you will notice that crush of one of these amtrak cars involved with that derailment,
4:17 am
notice the amount of people, on the scene you can only imagine, how many people, how many attendees, how many emergency, personnel are continuing to crowd and attend, this incident. if you are traveling in and around the port richmond area we have a few closures and we suggest that you try to avoid this area at all costs for really a good portion of this morning's commute. lets talk closures. frankford avenue being one of them wheatsheaf being one of them, so in and around these points you will want to try to avoid. if you have to travel in and around the area, aramingo avenue is good alternate at this time. if you you again, planned to use or have used or would have used anyone of these streets this morning. if you are traveling amtrak or had planned to travel amtrak here is the latest. amtrak is currently suspended between philadelphia and new york however, they are running on a modified schedule between d.c. and philadelphia not only d.c. and philadelphia but harrisburg to
4:18 am
philadelphia, new york and boston, and fortunately new jersey transit is honoring amtrak tickets between new york and trenton. in addition to the amtrak suspension as well as mode filed schedules here chestnut hill west suspended trenton line has been suspended. you are going to want to make sure you plan accordingly this morning, with that said i noticed, when jan carabao was live on scene at 30th street station, busing will be a very popular, means of transportation, this morning also new jersey transit with that said you want to keep in mind things will be busier then usual. maybe a lot of folks are jumping in the the car and heading on to the new jersey turnpike trying to head to and from new york, that is only one option but right now you to want to expect the worst this morning in regards, to this specific situation traveling to and from new york and that is what you would usually do this morning n other news traveling patco they are -- patco rather they are running midday schedules
4:19 am
in both directions here, that is mass transit related that we wanted to keep you informed about this morning. we want to keep you informed about the wet they are morning. the let's head to katie. >> thank you very much vittoria. i can report that the weather will cooperate for us in a nice way today. win is still something that is noticeable for us out there as cold front has since crossed it has done its job of cooling things down substantially didn't have too much in the the way of wet weather out of it as was the expectation but now we're back in the chill if you want to call it that chill by comparison that is for sure but really it is a dose of reality. the clouds are beginning to thin away from northwest to south east and as we go through the the day we will see more and more sunshine and we will see that sun coming up in 90 minutes or so, in the meantime temperatures are taking a hit, more so in other places then some others. we are still seeing that delayed reaction, transition is essentially happening as we speak. you are cooler in reading oral allentown or mount pocono then you are in comparison to this
4:20 am
same time yesterday in wildwood, for example. that gives you an idea where we stan. so does this as we overlook at delaware river here, outside palmyra cove nature park in new jersey, overlooking center city in the distance n problems seeing it. fog issues have have retreated. rear about to get 60 degrees at this particular location. look at that wind direction. it may not be a strong wind but out of the north/northwest, that is the key here, folks that breeze is somewhat gusty. expect gusts to peak to 30 miles an hour and enough to end your trash can lid flying down the road. keep that in mine. but the sun will shine it will be a very c thing that you will notice is that wind but that too is going to diminish with time and dairy say a it is a chilly night bottoming out at 48 degrees tonight and then we will start that slow climb again. tomorrow looks gorgeous, overall, friday starting with sunshine eventually cloud to build and we could see a shower by that night but it looks as though the weekend is
4:21 am
going to be the unsettled or active period of our forecast with the warm front that is getting essentially stuck. we will end up with just a couple of showers maybe a couple thunderstorms saturday or sunday. just something that we have to keep an eye to the sky for ukee and erika back to you. if we can lets take another look. >> back to the scene. >> outside live from chopper three, this is why we are on early for you right the now. you see some workers trying to get early indication of what went wrong, talking about an amtrak train that derailed in port richmond last night around 9:30, train number 188 some 243 people on board, 141 to area hospitals, five people were killed, well over 60 people injury. we just talked with our contributing doctor, doctor rob danoff, one of the many doctors who rush to the scene to try to do the best they can, type of of injuries he saw internal bleeding, concussion lacerations
4:22 am
broken bones and the the five fatalities that i mentioned mayor michael nutter could not believe his eyes, he was on the scene calling it a disastrous mess. >> crews till on the scene at 4:22 this morning. national transportation safety board they are still gathering information about this derailment, what caused it, it is still a question this morning. they are launching an investigative team to arrive early this morning. federal railroad administration said they are dispatching at least eight investigators to this scene because that is a big question waking up, asking how did this happen and no one has the answer to this question right now. amtrak brought in these crews to go through each car overnight looking for more passengers that may have been missed in that initial swoop to get everyone to area hospitals. >> look at those cars on their side, windows smashed off the tracks all seven cars off the track, some tracks were even twisted. right now many officials are working under the cover of darkness but once the sun comes up and i believe sunrise
4:23 am
is at the 5:45, 5:46 today the magnitude of this scene will be just unbelievable, these pictures from chopper three live telling the scene. those cars are not even near tracks. >> store thinks morning of people crawling out of windows to get out of the trains and drastic difference in how someone is impact, some lives lost, other people walking away without a scratch depending where were you on that train when some tribe it as a huge, screeching noise like they were throwing the brakes on is how one passenger described it, and then luggage was flying and all of a should then happened, trains started tumbling, people were screaming. just a horrific scene. we will hear more from them throughout the morning. >> one of the neighbors said it sounded like a number of hopping carts banging together and he lived away from the scene. the this is frankford junction by locals in that area huge curve is out there but ntsb
4:24 am
will be on the scene sometimes this morning trying to determine what went wrong but it will be a very, very long process, as you might imagine. look at that scene just mangled, twisted metal. five fatalities that we know of, this is just unbelievable. unbelievable. we will continue to follow the very latest, and this amtrak tragedy. keep it here on "eyewitness news" throughout the morning we will have the very latest on this derailment and victims and commute throughout the morning.
4:25 am

4:27 am
train 188, jumped the tracks near frankford and wheatsheaf about 9:30 last night and washington to new york city. >> this is a fluid situation we have live reports coming up from that scene and from the number of area hospitals where those injured are being treated, more than 60 being treated at hospitals. one eyewitness came upon the scene moments after that derailment, she told us what . >> it hit power lines. there was a pedestrian breezeway it hit and knocked support out of so bridge is hanging down. three cars were laying on their side, one car was sticking up in the air. while i was standing there manny was up there for two hours. they were just pulling people, man. just lifeless. >> wow wow. >> incredible. >> scanner chatter earlier about the situation one of the dispatchers described it as a mass casualty incident. unbelievable. >> another eyewitness described it as shopping carts
4:28 am
banging into each other and screaming and response to this intense situation. they are still looking through those cars, trying to find signs of life. >> lets check in katie real quick with the forecast. >> our forecast will not hinder any of the rescue crews efforts i don't think. we do still have significant wind to report for you out there today. it will be with us essentially all day and then ease up later on tonight. it is courtesy of the frontal passage t has since happened and now that delayed reaction in the wake as we cool things down, see that wind pick up, this always happens as cold fronts cross through. we will show you view on storm scan three which is pretty clear. we have some included cover across portions of the southern tier of our area. but that is all starting to fizzle away with time. you can see that line of clouds indicating back edge of our cold front. that said you can expect more sun then anything but keep in mind here that with the wind continuing to pick up as it will throughout the day that
4:29 am
dozen hans our fire risk. across the entire state of of new jersey red flag warning goes into effect at noon and last until 6:00. weather doesn't even start any fires but you can see how they would, just spread more easily when you have got to tiehl with lower relative humidity, dry fine fools like branches or leaves. those can easily just, get caught up in the flames. be careful grilling out with cigarette butts all that throughout the course of the afternoon. red flag warning at noon today for state of new jersey. temperatures as we stan they are all over the place, the true back end of the front hasn't completely crossed through yet. still mild, wildwood, up and down shore points but that northwest breeze is kicking in. while you don't necessarily have a cooling impact of the on shore flow you will still feel cool breeze kicking in here across the region not just at the shore and we are expecting a much cooler by comparison temperature of
4:30 am
70 degrees and just a low climb from here. back to the lower 80's by week end but a few more cloud and potential for some showers if not a thunderstorm looking ahead to the weekend as well. vittoria, now back over to you. thanks very much, katie. good morning everyone. we are taking a live look at chopper three over the scene of the breaking news story the amtrak derail many. i will step out of the way to get a better look. i was driving into work this morning and i listened to mayor nutter during his press conference over kyw news radio saying that one of the cars of the amtrak train was perpendicular. it just goes to show you the the amount of the severe. as you know amount of the severity we have been telling you that this will definitely be out there for a good portion of this morning and afternoon and as a traffic reporter i know first hand even when we have one fatality in the crash on any
