Old school virtue on memorable display.
A classic, immensely evocative wartime film as only the embattled British could make, celebrating their heroic aristocracy while poking fun at it at the same time. Marvelous performances by Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook and Deborah Kerr, in beautiful color.

Without doubt, one of the best films of all time
Intensely moving, in beautiful Technicolor, this follows the life of a British army officer, Clive Candy (Roger Livesey), from the Boer War to World War 2, recording both his search for love and the sad fate of Germany over that time.
Utterly honest, utterly fearless, game for any adventure and not terribly bright, his decency, courage and initiative epitomise the English virtues which are celebrated in the film, virtues largely shared with Theo (Anton Walbrook), the German cavalry officer who becomes his dearest friend.
Germany, however, which had taken a high moral tone over Britain’s conduct in the Boer War, sinks into the brutality of the First World War and after deep suffering in defeat and depression ends up in the unspeakable horror of Nazism.
Candy’s quest for a woman to share his life is touching, sometimes comic but often sad. Each object of his love over the years is played by the same unbelievably beautiful and spirited redhead, Deborah Kerr.
Without doubt, one of the best films of all time.

One of the Best Movies on the Site!!!
This is a serious color movie made in England during the middle of WW2. If you liked Foyle's War, you will probably like this movie. It is the story of the life of British career soldier Clive Candy. Candy falls in love with Deborah Kerr's character while in Germany. He fights a duel with a German officer and they both end up in the hospital recovering. He becomes friends with the German Officer and stays friends with him through WW1 and into WW2. The German officer gets the girl and Candy spends the rest of his life looking for a girl just like the one that got away. Clive struggles with the morality or lack therof of war losing the gentleman/honor aspect. Deborah Kerr plays several parts. I have watched this twice now and am amazed that I had never heard of it. Not just good entertainment but a great film.
