h hostages are reportedly still in the mall in nairobi. and this morning, investigations into possible american involvement in the plot. nbc's ron allen is live in nairobi. good morning. is this standoff showing any signs of letting up? >> reporter: yes. there's every indication that the kenyan government, military, are trying to bring the siege, in its third day, to an end. we've seen a lot of police activity on the perimeter. we're several yards away from the entrance of the mall. we're able to hear explosions and gunfire in the distance. that gives you an idea of the intensity of what's going on down there. the gunman are confined to a small area. we believe there 10 to 15 gunman. and they have managed to free some of the people being held. at this point, numbers are hard

to come by. exact measurements of what's going on there. the bottom line there is that the military, the government have tried to show patience, they say. it's a tricky situation because the innocent civilians are still in there. the death toll has risen to 68, 69. we believe there are 200 injured. and the casualty figures could increase further. i don't know if you're able to hear it, there was gunfire in the distance. that's why i'm trying to get out of the way of this. the soldiers are taking defensive positions, as well. again, a tense situation continuing here in nairobi this morning, as the government tries to bring this hostage situation to an end. veronica? >> ron allen, in nairobi, kenya. do be careful. and president obama begins a week of meetings with world leaders. but sunday, he tried to reset the national debate on gun

reform. the president and first lady met with survivors of the navy yard shooting. it's the president's latest time he was grieving with the country over mass violence. >> as president, i've grieved with five american communities ripped apart by mass violence. ft. hood. tucson. aurora. sandy hook. and now, the washington navy yard. these tragedies are just somehow the way it is. that this is somehow the new normal. we can't accept this. >> the nra's wayne lapierre is pushing for tougher security and more armed guards. he reituated the comments he said after the newtown shooting.

>> when the good guys with guns got there, it stopped. a dramatic rescue in california, courtesy of the u.s. coast guard. the chop ya waters made the trail impassable for three days sunday. so, the coast guard's option was to bring each of the women up in a basket one by one. one woman was swept into the water. but the two others pulled her out of the tide. all three hikers are thankfully okay this morning. a night of big wins. and big upsets at the 65th annual primetime emmy awards. >> "breaking bad." >> reporter: a week before saying good-bye, the cable series "breaking bad" picked up its first emmy as best drama. also part of "breaking bad's" big night. >> anna gunn as best supporting actress. but gunn's co-star missed out

for best actor. it went to jeff dentals, "the newsroom." >> i won the best actor over 50 from the aarp. >> reporter: honors for best actress went to claire danes, her second-straight win for "homeland." in the comedy categories, him parsons won his third emmy. and julia louis dreyfuss made it back-to-back wins for "veep." her fourth career emmy. >> this is so much good fortune. >> "modern family." >> reporter: the nbc sitcom won for a fourth-straight year. stephen colbert and company snapped "the daily show with jon stewart's" run as best variety series. the tune changed for best reality competition series. "the voice."

>> reporter: nbc's singing show, "the voice," won for the first time. the hbo film about the life of liberace won best miniseries. it won best actor for michael douglas, who saluted co-star, matt damon. >> you deserve half of this. you want the bottom or the top? now, here's your "first look," at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics." hillary clinton is opening up to "new york" magazine. it's her first manger interview since leaving the state department. she doesn't reveal if she's running for president. by did say she is considering a bid. but she's not in a hurry to make a decision. maybe her husband can give us further insight. >> somebody may know, but i don't. i'm not one of the people who does. these polls don't mean much. she would be the first to tell you that there's no such thing

as a done deal ever by anybody. but i don't know what she's going to do. >> a conservative super pac is continuing these ads in an attempt to oust house speaker john boehner. the political action committee says the speaker has worked too closely with president obama. is a says boehner refuses to defund obama care. >> i don't think an, in america, we should throw tantrums and threaten to shut down the government and refuse to pay the bills. the american people had a choice between someone who said repeal obama care and president obama. >> this was expected. but now, it's official. sean eldridge has been the facebook co-founder, chris hughes, is running for congress in upstate new york.

27-20. there were more upsets on sunday. the packers lose the ball, picked up by cincinnati. but cincy's terence newman takes it 58 yards for a t.d. and the giants blanked by the panthers. 38-0. cam newton showing no mercy. and eli manning was sacked a whopping seven times. here's something you don't see every day. after the titans get a touchdown late in the fourth to edge over the chargers, a failed lateral attempt turns philip rivers into, check this out -- what's he about to do? kick the ball? he's a soccer player now. the flags fly and the titans win, 20-17. in baseball, mariano rivera gets a rousing sendoff in the bronx. complete with metallica right there, performing his entrance music, "enter sandman." the all-time leader in saves retired at the end of the season. rivera made a relief appearance

in the top of the eighth. the fly ball is caught. but the yanks lose to san francisco, 2-1. and a huge celebration for hot atlanta. the braves clinch for the first time in eight years. they are a little happy. and in the american league, the oakland a's clinch the american league west title. to nascar and the sprint cup, matt kenseth gets his seventh win of the season and becomes his the second racer to get his 500th start. and he gets a traditional lobster trophy. the annual red bull flutag competition. had competitors plummeting into the water. they have trouble taking flight. the teams gave the wright brothers a run for their money. this one got airborne for a

second. the goal is to put on a good show and have fun. >> and make a splash. it is time for our first look at politics with lynn sweet, bureau chief for "the chicago sun times." good morning. >> good morning. >> seven days away from a potential government shutdown. the office of management and budget have sent out a memo just? case this happens. how likely is the scenario? >> there might be a shutdown for a day or two. then, maybe some short-term resolutions just to extend the deadline. while they keep working at a solution here. >> all right. we're going to have to stay tuned. we want to get to presidential politics. talk about this article that came out in "the new yorker." and decode the somewhat ambiguous language that was used in the hillary clinton interview. will she be running? won't she be? is this locked up for her.
