just came from the small state of vermont, she's mistaken. we will fight back. i do hope we can raise the level and i hope now and then the media will choose to talk about real issues. >> just a short time ago, in an unscheduled stop in the bronx, hillary clinton responded. >> it's kind of a silly thing to say, but i'm going to trust the voters of new york, who know me, and have voted for me three times -- twice for senate, once in the presidential primary. look, i didn't -- i don't know why he is saying that, but i will take bernie sanders over donald trump or ted cruz any time. so, let's keep our eye on what's really at stake in this election. we have republicans whose values are so antithetical to what's right to new york or america. and i'll keep doing what i do with my friends for all these

years to try to really make a difference in people's lives. >> well, we also watched hillary clinton ride the subway, from the bronx to manhattan in new york city also just a few minutes ago, greeting people along the way, as she headed to her next campaign stop. kasie hunt is in philadelphia, covering the sanders' campaign. kristen welker is covering the clinton campaign. ladies, good morning. casey, when we heard from the senator in the last hour he kind of doubled down on comments he made last night. >> reporter: jose, good morning. please forgive the backdrop. we are in a garage where they just parked the sanders' motorcade in between his events. we're kind of running around a little bit. so, thank you to produce elise acting as our human tripod out here. this is a busy day for sanders, in part, because he is doubling down on this criticism of hillary clinton, saying that she is not qualified to be president

of the united states. of course, clinton never using that direct quote in her interview with "morning joe" that started all of this. but it was included in a "washington post" headline as well as reporting from cnn, talking about her campaign working to disqualify him in advance of the new york primary. sanders clearly taking this quite personally and talking about how he wouldn't be dismissed just because he's from a small state. take a look. >> if secretary clinton thinks just because i'm from a small state in vermont and we're going to come here to new york and pennsylvania and they're going to beat us up and go after us in some kind of really unqualified way, they can guess again. that's not the case. this campaign will fight back. when have you headlines in "the washington post," quote, clinton

questions whether sanders is qualified to be president, my response is, you know, if you want to question my qualifications, let me suggest this. maybe the american people might wonder about your qualifications, madame secretary, when you voted for the war in iraq, the most disastrous foreign policy blunder in the modern history of america. people might want to wonder about your qualifications when you supported virtually every trade agreement. trade agreements which have cost the american worker millions of decent-paying jobs. and the american people might want to wonder about your qualifications when you're spending an enormous amount of time raising money for your super pac from some of the wealthiest people in this countr country. >> reporter: there, you have bernie sanders clearly taking this quite personally. now, remember, jose, back to

earlier in this campaign in 2015 when sanders would use, as an applause line, his insistence that he wouldn't go after hillary clinton on anything except policy. if crowds boo'd when her name was mentioned, he would discourage them from booing. that was changed, evolved as this campaign has gotten more intense. you can really tell that sanders took very personally, is taking personally the clinton campaign approach to this new york primary and to clinton, you know, refusing to say outright that she believes sanders is qualified to be president in that "morning joe" interview. this is a very candidate-driven campaign. we talk so much in a lot of our coverage about campaign staffers, how decisions are made inside campaigns. bernie sanders, more than most presidential candidates, really very much drives his own message, his own decisions and while his -- there has been some

reporting that people around him urged him to go negative in 2015, to run harder against hillary clinton. he personally refused to do that. he said i'm not going to do it. i remember asking about this in iowa. clearly today, the remarks being taken very personally by bernie sanders. and he has decided he is going to continue to push ahead and respond in kind, jose. >> kasie hunt at an undisclosed location in philadelphia. thank you very much, kasie. good to see you. now for reactions on the clinton campaign we bring in kristen welker. good morning. good to see you. >> reporter: had jose, good to see you. i've been talking to clinton campaign officials who say, look, over the next several days you can see them make the argument that, as kasie was just saying, secretary clinton didn't call him unqualified, though clearly questioned his qualifications. president obama, john kerry,

their standards that they wouldn't be qualified for president and then the argument that secretary clinton made today when she spoke to reporters, that to call your democratic counterpart unqualified only helps the gop. take a listen to what secretary clinton had to say just moments ago. >> i ran a very contested campaign against then senator obama. it went all the way to the end. we worked really hard. he got more delegates and so i endorsed him. i worked for him. i nominated him at the convention. because we are going to have to unify democrats and right-thinking americans to stand up against the republicans. donald trump or ted cruz absolutely will rip away the progress we've made. and trump, with his insults of everybody, is trying to divide us instead of unify us. let's start with the democratic party and go from there. >> so, secretary clinton directing her comments at the

gop this morning. that's clear that the gloves have come off in the democratic race. part of the reason, the clinton campaign hoped to have this race locked up by now. they don't. it's becoming increasingly competitive. senator sanders has had six straight wins. secretary clinton really fighting hard here in new york. she has been campaigning aggressively here. former president bill clinton has been campaigning here aggressively as well. some democrats warning secretary clinton, look, she has to walk a fine line as well, not to insult or offend senator sanders' supporters because she will ultimately need them if she does, in fact, make it to the general election. bottom line, jose, we're seeing this race get a lot more heated as it gets increasingly competitive. jose? >> i am joined now by two colleagues, ed, this isn't new. big ideas, never going to get it accomplished. maybe she never said the words

"he is not qualified." that's still to be determined. but for months she has been implying he has big ideas, can't put them into practice. ie what? >> that he's not qualified even if she doesn't use the word. i think part of what this is, she's sort of drawing him out, now in the largest media market in the country, in the biggest contested part of the country they all have roots in. she may win but not big because sanders catches up to her the next few days. more than anything, it exposes again that the frictions that have been there for quite some time that are now starting to boil over. yes, she's doing well. he has won a few. if he doesn't win the next few she'll take an insurmountable lead and he won't be able to catch her. >> despite sanders' latest winning streak, a big, big battle when it comes to delegates. if hillary clinton becomes the nominee, could his attacks hurt her in november?

>> it could certainly. that's one of the reasons hillary clinton has been so careful in every word that she says about bernie sanders. she does not want to alienate his supporters. she knows she will need to start building bridges to the sanders' wing of the democratic party heading into the convention in the fall, assuming she becomes the nominee. she wants to run a vigorous campaign and be competitive with him and beat him in these states. she also doesn't want to cause any damage that will turn off his supporters, especially those young mill eniennials who haven voted before and are enthusiastic about sanders and may sit home if she's the nominee. >> former congressman bernie franks said those who are coming out to support sanders are low information people. you have to be careful not upsetting sanders but her people have been pretty clear for a long time now that they think that sanders and those who

support him aren't really based on reality and what could occur if he becomes president. nothing could happen. >> that's right. that's an appealing argument to a certain segment of the democratic party. as phil said, this is a year in which, you know, outsiders and emotion and a desire to really shake up the system is resonating. so, you know, barney frank can go and say something like that and suggest that young supporters of sanders should do their homework. she will probably never get to that point. she knows that saying something like that would potentially cause people to stay home or look for other alternatives in the general election if she's the nominee. >> does bernie sanders have a real chance of making inroads or winning in new york? >> he has a very real chance. he is behind in the polls. she's the state senator from the last decade but he has a chance to make inroads. big crowds, planning very large rallies.

he really appeals to the liberals in new york city especially, but also upstate. he represented vermont, which is similar, in some respects, to many parts of upstate new york. i think he thinks he has a chance to really make some inroads. they have a debate in brooklyn next week, which will be a big, decisive moment in this primary f you look at how the clinton campaign is approaching new york very intensively, they know he could spring a surprise on her. >> let's put it this way. i'm from albany, grew up in albany. bernie sanders has been on tv news in the upstate region, in the capital region since the early '90s. he has been a presence in homes across upstate new york for decades. >> even before these tokens -- >> even before her. >> -- to use subways. >> even before that. >> what about you, ed? >> the race for delegates, big convention in colorado where ted cruz is likely going to clean up a bit. you have -- and the cruz campaign continues across the country to sort of figure out

donald trump trying to rebound in his home state after that stinging loss to ted cruz. is he positioning and postponing scheduled trips to stay in new york through the primary. he is slamming cruz for his attack earlier this year on so-called new york values. >> do you remember during the debate when he started lecturing me on new york values, like we're no good? like we're no good. and i started talking to him about the world trade center, the bravery, the incredible bravery of everybody, our police, our firemen, everybody.

the worst attack in the history of the united states, the bravery that was shown was incredible. we all lived through it. we all know people that died. and i've got this guy standing over there, looking at me, talking about new york values with scorn in his face, with hatred -- with hatred of new york. so, folks, i think you can forget about him. >> donald trump crossing the 50% threshold in the latest polls. john kasich is 27 points behind trump. cruz is down at 17%. that same poll shows a little more than a third of republicans have totally made up their mind. 14% remain totally undecided. our team is out across new york today. let me start with nbc's jacob rascon outside trump towers in new york. jacob, good morning. we know trump will be in new york through the primary.

do you think it's an indication that he's going all out for a knockout there? >> reporter: it really is. if he can take all 95 delegates he can make up, essentially, for the wisconsin loss, which was stinging. i talked to a trump adviser who said look, we like to talk about open convention or brokered convention but trump can get the delegates. if he gets all 95 here, he only needs going forward in the low 50s, 52%, 53%. still a battle but something that trump is able to do as a possibility. instead of going to california, instead of going to colorado, they're now going to stay in new york for a full two weeks. he is off today. we're expecting to hear on his schedule more trump rallies coming up. last night, of course, you saw that massive rally here on long island. that was different, of course, than wisconsin. we saw smaller venues. we saw smaller crowds. in fact, compared to other states, we saw a colder

reception. still enthusiastic, still more crowds compared maybe to some of the other candidates in terms of numbers, in terms of thousands of people, but less than we had been seeing in other states. back to new york or to new york, back to big rallies, giant rallies. he is expecting then to be in every massive population center around the state. that's what his co-chair is saying here in new york. he announced also his party leadership, which includes members of all 27 congressional districts. donald trump wants to take it all here. he knows it could be critical to getting to that all-important nomination. >> hawley jackson joins us. she's following ted cruz. good morning. >> reporter: immediately by protesters, hecklers who say you do not belong here.

cruz pushing forward. we're actually here outside schenectatty. he has a new magazine cover out, by the way. let's pull up the latest "time" magazine. cruz on the cover. headline "likable enough?" on ted cruz, how he views this nomination process moving forward. this was done before his wisconsin win. now that he has locked down and his campaign momentum, looking to compete in new york. we were out chatting with folks at a diner down the street. and there is a sense that this seems to be trump country. people like the way that trump talks. they like the way that he speaks. when it comes to that new york values line, i had people say ted cruz doesn't understand new york values.

that said, cruz's line has been that people in new york, conservatives specifically, understand what he means when he talks about new york values. drawing a line between that and what he calls liberal democratic values. here is what he has to say when i asked him about that in the bronx. liste listen. >> the people in new york know exactly what those values are, liberal politicians like andrew cuomo, anthony weiner, eliot spitzer, like charlie wrangle, all of whom donald trump has supported, given tens of thousands of dollars throughout the years. if you want to know what liberal democratic values are, follow donald trump's checkbook. >> reporter: cruz, you heard trump hitting cruz, cruz hitting trump. the battle between the two of them going nowhere in the empire state, jose. later today, i should tell you, after his rally here, we're driving down to brooklyn where cruz will be touring a matza

bakery in brooklyn. we'll have images from that later for you this afternoon. >> hallie jackson, thank you for that. let's bring in tea party supporter. >> thanks for having me. >> new york values saying he was referring to the liberal values of democratic politicians in the state. do you think new york voters will accept that explanation? >> i think they will. if you look at a red/blue map of new york, new york city is blue. syracuse area is blue. and then a lot of the rest of that map is red. a lot of that red territory is good ted cruz territory. you know, something else i've heard from my friends in new york, a lot of them remember over the years donald trump has bank rolled a lot of democrats that senator cruz just mentioned, from andrew cuomo to eliot spitzer, anthony weiner and all these guys. and some of these guys in the republican party are not in a forgiving mood and they're not

forgetting that donald trump was essentially the banker to the democrat party. >> you would agree that he also bank rolled a lot of the republican party as well? apparently he was giving money to everybody. >> he gave money to some republicans. for example, he gave money to the democrat senate campaign committee a committee. there are no significant contributions to the republican senate campaign committees. trump's contributions and support to democrats far outweighs his support that he has given to any republican in the past. >> let's take a look at the latest polls in new york. cruz third at 17% behind kasich. trump at 52%. how does cruz improve his numbers there? can he? >> absolutely. two to three weeks ago, before -- i say two to three weeks ago. two to three weeks before the wisconsin primary, senator cruz was losing wisconsin. he came in and swept. new york is donald trump's home state. if he doesn't take the whole thing, he's really losing here.

and, remember, new york is also a hybrid state where a lot of delegates -- delegates are picked by congressional district. so, senator cruz may welcome in and sweep out a few of those. john kasich may pick up a few as well. if donald trump doesn't take the whole enchilada, i think he is a big loser. >> how about if he does take the whole enchilada? >> if he takes the whole thing, it helps him a lot. but i don't see a path to him -- for him getting to 1237 no matter how it is cut. at the end of the day when we're done with california in june, i think what we end up with is an open convention. >> in that open convention, what does cruz think is the best possible outcome. and how do you get there if trump comes in and takes a couple of big states and doesn't reach the number? what's the best way to do that

against someone who clearly has -- will probably have more delegates than cruz? >> if you remember back in 1976, ronald reagan went into the republican with more delegates than gerald ford did. hey, who won the 1976 convention? gerald ford. so, if donald trump doesn't win on the first ballot, i don't think he wins at all. a lot of the delegates who are committed to him on the first ballot are going to be free agents by the time it comes to the second ballot. a lot of them will not be voting for donald trump. it's either ted cruz or donald trump. if trump can't win it on the first ballot, i think ted cruz wins it on the second ballot. >> judson phillips, thank you for being with me. appreciate your time. >> jose, thanks again for having me. the latest on sanders' charge that clinton is unqualified to be president. ahead. also, actress and sanders' supporter rosario dawson weighs

korniacki, we're going to be new yorkers, show how real new yorkers fight. in that sound bite you just played she was trying hard not to take the bait, said she would take bernie sanders any time over donald trump. she's trying not to get lured into this. they're both tough. they both can fight. if it happens that they're going to start really going back and forth with each other, that's to be expected in new york. and people pretty much expect that, frankly. >> i mean, i think it's important to clear up what she did and didn't say about sander sanders. >> she has said she was concerned about his interview with the new york daily news where he didn't seem to know the mechanics of breaking up big banks, a major part of his campaign platform. she said she worried about whether he had done adequate prep. all sorts of words to suggest she was wondering if he was ready to be president but the

word "qualified" is not what she said. it became a headline in "the washington post." she never said it. he needs to be careful of accusing her of saying something she didn't say. >> you know new york well. we saw hillary clinton riding on the new york city subway today. >> we did. we did. >> she was there with my friend, no relation to me. bedford's comments about using tokens to ride the trains. tell me a little bit about if that will have anything to do with -- >> she's claiming she's riding the subway to put the attention on trump. she said trump really needed to walk the streets of new york. let's face it. of course, she's digging at bernie sanders who, yes, is a new yorker. we certainly hear that every time he opens up his mouth. he has a heavy brooklyn accent. he hasn't lived here in quite some time. he has to get used to the city's ways again. i think she was trying to take that dig with him about. >> beth fouhy, thank you.

hour in upstate new york, outside of albany. joining me now is the director of the quinnipiac in upstate new york. >> good morning. how are you doing? >> good, thank you. there's so much more to the state. let's look at the politics. what are some of the key differences between new york city and the rest of the state? >> you know, new york city and new york state are not necessarily the same thing. in this case, you have a home field advantage for both of the leading candidates, if you will. trump wins in a walk. hillary clinton's lead over sanders is a dozen points, 12 points, which would be pretty good normally. but she was so high just not too long ago that it does raise a couple of questions. let me suggest that everybody should look very actively for the quinnipiac poll next week,

tuesday or wednesday. that will give us some hint of how things will go in new york. you know, it's a big state. it matters. both these people have new york connections. trump's name is on every building in new york, it seems. well, you know -- and hillary clinton, she lives up in chappequa. they both have new york roots. it will be an interesting election. also, look, i've covered new york politics ever since -- i don't know, peter stiverson was mayor, i guess. they're sort of basic. they're tough. >> yeah. we see this dust-up between sanders and clinton about who is qualified and who said they weren't, do you think those kinds of debates and discussions play better in new york maybe than they would elsewhere?

>> possibly so. who is qualified is nonsense. it's just silly. do you know what it is? it's reporters. reporters get hung up on a word or a little thing like that. they've both been senators and one has been a secretary of state. but new york loves that kind of stuff. you have tabloid papers in new york and pretty good papers that post the news, which will focus on a good number, good word, a good fight. >> do you think the hold is less strong and deep in new york than someone like trump on the republican side? in other words, would it be possible for her lead to be

chipped away successfully by sanders in these two weeks? >> of course. of course. the question with hillary clinton is she is a practiced politician. she knows how to do this stuff. but her people, are they going to get out and work for her? particularly in the minority neighborhoods. quinnipiac numbers that show her up by a dozen points or so show her astronomically ahead in new york city. will they turnout? will the black and hispanic neighborhoods turn out? if they will, she wins in a walk. but i hate to -- but honest to goodness, quinnipiac numbers next week will be very, very significant. because it will be the right up there just about up to the starting gate. and we'll see where they stand. what we won't see is whether

they have any troops out on the stree street. >> hey, mickey, appreciate your time. >> thanks for having me. topic of conversation since the day he announced his campaign, the border fence. just this week, trump's campaign released its plan to force mexico to pay for that wall by threatening to block money transfers from immigrants in the united states back to family in mexico. telemundo exclusive interview, jay johnson told me why trump's plan to build a wall between the border of the southern u.s. and mexico just won't work. >> rio grande is windy, includes urban areas where there is a wall across 700 miles of it. it also includes mountains and desert. and so let's say we spent hundreds of millions or billions

of dollars to build a wall across the entire 1900 miles of it. do you really think somebody from central america who is so motivated to come here, travel all the way through mexico, climb a 10,000-foot mountain will be deterred by a ten-foot wall? i think the answer is no. border security experts say -- which i agree with -- you have to have a risk-based approach to border security through technology, surveillance, and having an agile border patrol. you go where you see illegal migration surging. we've done that the last 15 years and it's proven pretty successful. >> the important role mexico plays is trade partner and how the united states should not be in, quote, the business of alienating the mexican people or the mexican government. you can catch an extended version of that interview with secretary johnson on msnbc.com, on my facebook page, msnbc live with jose diaz-balart.

this problem. gwen carr joins me this morning. thank you for being with me. >> good morning. >> why do you think hillary clinton is, as you say, the only candidate doing anything about gun violence within the african-american community? >> i think madame secretary, she's very adamant about the gun violence, about police violence and one goes with the other. she is the first candidate i've heard talk about black lives matter. and she brings to the table what i am most adamant about. and that's, you know, proper policing, police reform. and those things, i am, you know, very, very interested in. >> have you had an opportunity to speak with her, to spend time with her? i know you're going to be spending time with her shortly. >> yes. yes.

i have. even before i started campaigning with her. she asked to have a meeting with me. so, i have a personal experience wi with hillary. she asked myself and 10 other mothers to come to chicago and meet with her. it was a very personal meeting. it wasn't a meeting where we had media. she made it clear she didn't want any media there. we were eating and she came in as the secretary but i think she went out as a mother, a caring mother who was so concerned about our problems. she talked to us. she asked each one of us individually what do we think she could do to help, you know, combat this problem. >> what did you tell her?

what was your interaction with her? what did you tell her at that meeting? >> i told her that i think we needed better policing. we needed police accountability, which we don't seem to have enough. she wrote all of this down. she didn't have her staff write it down. she wrote it down herself. and even afterwards, we got personal phone calls to see that, you know, we were okay, how were we doing. so, it wasn't like she was exploiting us or anything. because we're doing this because we want to. not because we're being exploited. >> have you -- you know, this political climate that we're living in in the united states, it seems like, you know, you start talking about things that are so insignificant. you blow them up, this and that. how do you see the political discourse? what would you like to see that we all talk about?
