of his term as. >> pope and opening. >> a new chapter. >> in the 2000. >> year history. >> of the catholic church. these are live pictures from the vatican, where. >> thousands are. >> gathered for the mass, set to begin. >> in just. >> about 15 minutes. pope leo gave those gathered an early thrill, making a mass tour of the crowds in the popemobile. >> many of those. >> folks have. >> been. >> waiting for hours. >> among those. >> at the. >> vatican. delegations from. >> more than 150 countries. >> american officials like vice president jd vance and secretary. >> of state marco. >> rubio, as well. >> as the prime. ministers of canada, france and australia. >> ukrainian president. >> volodymyr zelenskyy. >> and prince edward representing the uk. >> while pope leo. >> officially became pope. >> as soon as we saw. >> that white smoke. >> from the chimney over the sistine chapel. >> today's mass will include important symbolic. >> moments, including. >> the presentation of an ecclesiastical vestment. >> known as the pallium and the ring of the fisherman. >> worn by popes.
12:47 am
>> going back as far as the 13th century. >> the ten. >> days since leo was. >> chosen have been packed. appearances and. >> moments. >> giving us. >> our first. glimpses into. >> not just. >> how the 69. year old. >> first american. >> pope will approach. >> the. centuries old. >> papacy. >> but what. >> messages he. >> will send from the most. >> influential pulpit in. >> the world. >> one of. >> the most. compelling images. >> of. >> the past. >> week was this. >> one. >> leo. praying at the tomb. >> of pope. >> francis at. >> saint mary major. in many ways, his. >> early messages. >> have echoed those of. >> his predecessor. >> at his. first mass as pope in the sistine. >> chapel. leo aligned. >> himself with. >> ordinary people and told cardinals. he plans to carry. >> on. >> francis's mission to care for those on the margins. >> of society. >> but he also signaled a. >> willingness to go further. >> perhaps. >> and be. more active on the world scene. >> in his. >> first sunday address last week in saint peter's. >> square. >> pope leo told. >> a. >> crowd of more than.
12:48 am
>> 100,000 that he wanted. >> an. >> end to all wars. >> specifically referencing gaza and ukraine. he also said he would be willing. >> to. >> play a personal role in brokering peace. and on friday, his top diplomat even said the vatican would be open to hosting talks. but even with all. of that, the new pope found. >> time to have. >> at least a little bit of fun. >> the top. >> ranked player in. the world. >> tennis player italian. jannik sinner, meeting with the pope. >> gifting him with a racket. >> and then. >> sinner suggested a quick volley. since leo is an avid player, the pope took one look at the antiques displayed throughout the vatican auditorium and said with a smile, better not. let's bring in our. >> all star. >> panel, starting with nbc news foreign correspondent claudio lavanga. chris white is vatican. >> correspondent for the national. >> catholic reporter. >> and an. msnbc vatican analyst. >> his book, pope leo. >> the 14th. >> inside the conclave and. >> the. >> dawn of a new papacy, is set to be released in june. >> we are watching. >> marco rubio right now in the
12:49 am
crowd heading to his seat. by the way, claudio and chris are both there. reporting live from rome. >> we also. >> have elizabeth lev, vatican author, historian. >> and guide. >> and father timothy kesicki is president of the jesuit conference. it's great to have all of you here. so, claudio, as we. watch one of the top americans going through the crowd, give us a rundown of what we'll be seeing in this mass. what are the highlights that we should be watching for? >> well, first. >> of all, chris, as you said, you know, the pope has just returned from his first automobile tour of the square and also through via della conciliazione. that is the long road that leads to rome. and a couple of takeaways from there. well, first of all, he has chosen, as pope francis did, to not use the bulletproof glass, that, for instance, pope benedict used to used to use. and also very interesting moments there where he picked up a couple of babies, but he didn't really kiss them.
12:50 am
>> so it was just giving, giving them a bit. >> of a pat. >> contrary to what we were used to see with francis. maybe it just needs to warm up. let's just give him time. also, he didn't get off the popemobile, but francis got off the popemobile to kiss and bless a disabled man in 2013. so all these things that you're just looking at comparisons now. but of course, as we said, these are this is just the first ten days of, of his papacy. so he just needs to get used to it. also what we're seeing, of course, is all the dignitaries that are being seated there. we've seen rubio, as you mentioned, there, also president zelensky, which i believe we're seeing now. yes. and we will see whether zelensky has said before coming here that he was open to any bilateral meeting. so we will see whether the same might happen that we've seen during the funeral of pope francis, where zelensky and trump sat in the basilica of saint petersburg. of course, trump is not here at this time,
12:51 am
but we'll see whether he will be meeting j.d. vance or and or marco rubio will will watch and will watch and see that very interesting detail there. now that we've seen all these dignitaries seated, if you look at the list of dignitaries, there are many more from peru than from the states. i counted 13 people from peru, the biggest, the second biggest delegation after italy. there's 13 in peru and then seven from the united states. i mean, if you're not reading into that, but chris. >> so. >> christopher, there is a certain obvious solemnity. and obvious importance to a tradition that goes back for centuries, on the other hand. and there's the picture of j.d. vance. i'm looking at some of the interviews with folks. >> in. the crowd, one of them. >> 27 year old san franciscan and a recent catholic convert, said the excitement in the air is tangible. he is buzzing about
12:52 am
seeing the new pope talk about the mood on the ground and what your observations are from your high vantage point. >> you know, it's interesting. >> chris, one of the things we were. >> commenting on. >> earlier is how. >> many flags. >> from the. >> united states. >> we're seeing out in the crowd. and that's not. >> uncommon to see the square just. covered with flags from the us. >> it's kind of a novelty. >> i mean, pope. >> francis had. >> a difficult. >> relationship with the. >> us church. >> and with the united states more broadly. so for this to kind of almost be. >> like a. >> hometown heroes parade today, it. >> just creates. a different atmosphere. >> but i think. >> you know, today is about being forward looking. >> we're going. >> to hear the new pope. >> give a homily where i think. >> he'll probably. >> want. >> to offer some themes that will kind of define. >> his papacy. >> it will. >> be programmatic. >> in a sense. and i think, you know, i. >> think, yes, there's lots of celebrations. >> but we'll get a better clue. >> of what he wants. >> to do as pope. >> and one of the things father
12:53 am
i was kidding you about is that the jesuits have lost their bragging rights. had to. hand them over to the augustinians. but this is a moment, right? this is a moment to set the stage, a moment to send a message from, as we said, arguably the most visible and most influential pulpit in the world. how will he use it, do you think? >> well, i think it's always important to. >> remember there's this. >> expression urbi et orbi, the city in the world. so he is. >> going to be. >> attentive to. >> the people in. >> rome, but he never. speaks just to those in the crowd. he knows that this is the. >> era of television. >> he's speaking to the world. i think his. pastoral heart, his love of peru, why he left the united states, not because he didn't want to be in the us, because he saw there was a greater. >> need somewhere else. >> we'll be part. >> of his message. i think he's. >> going to want to show. >> the global. >> reach of the church. and the love he. >> has. >> and. >> the desire. >> he has to connect with. everyone who's following him. >> whether they're. >> in the square or watching on television or listening on the radio.
12:54 am
>> liz pope leo has already shown a little more tied to maybe traditional formality. i don't know whether kissing babies as opposed to holding babies. i think the parents will still appreciate the photograph is an example of that. but, you know, people talk about the fact that he wore the richly embroidered stole over the scarlet the shoulder cover for his first official picture as pope, as opposed to the more humble garments. but visually. and as an art. >> historian, you know. >> pictures do matter. what will you be watching for today? and what's the importance of the symbolism that we're going to see throughout this mass? >> well. >> the symbolism of the mass, chris, is extraordinary, and it is something that brings. >> a absolute novelty. our very. first north american. >> pope comes into line with. >> a 2000 year old tradition. >> so while we have the.
12:55 am
>> excitement of the new, we have the beauty and the majesty and. >> in a. >> certain sense, the comfort of. >> something that has been. >> a tradition. >> for over 2000, for almost. >> 2000 years. >> so i think. >> that's we're going to be looking in. >> the. >> ceremony for things that, while we celebrate a looking towards the future with a new vision and a new man. >> as the. >> successor of saint peter, we're. >> also going to want to see. >> him rooted in tradition. and that brings me to your first. >> question, which is. >> a very. >> interesting one. >> i was thinking, you know, when pope francis walked out on that. balcony in those first few days, we were all. >> together. >> the same. >> squad. >> and we. >> were. >> so amazed. at this breath of fresh air. it was new. it was exciting. it was. it was fascinating. everything was so different. now we've had different. and i think in a certain sense it is different. >> it's almost. >> countercultural to be doing things that remind us more of the tradition of the church. so i think we're going to have a pontificate with pope leo, where
12:56 am
we have a little bit of a of a surprise, something old, something new, something borrowed. i didn't see anything blue. oh, me. >> that is you. i do wonder, father, because it is a script yet to be written, and. we're all analyzing. and we will after the mass. every little thing he says and does or posts on social media. but will he surprise? maybe he has he already. >> in some ways. >> i think he has. >> surprised. >> coming. >> out of the first. >> us born. >> pope. >> and i know many people were. >> hoping he would. >> speak in english and he didn't. and i think. >> he was. >> speaking again to those who were gathered. but his i. >> think. love of. >> the church, his. >> having been born after the second vatican council. >> i think he's going to show a modern papacy. >> but not modern in the. >> sense of bowing to everything. >> that's happening in. >> the world, but. >> modern in the sense of he's. >> from a new. >> generation, he has breathing.
12:57 am
>> new life. he comes. >> from the new. >> world like his predecessor. >> and i think he's going to. >> show. >> in a sense, how the us has grown as. >> a church. >> but also a contribution. >> we can make to the. global communion. >> liz, you have seen this picture that we're seeing in person thousands upon thousands of times. but as we talk about symbolism and we talk about this most famous place in the roman catholic church, tell us what we're seeing. >> well. >> we're walking along the nave of saint peter's basilica. >> and to. >> see it. >> from. >> this vantage. point with. >> all of the priests. >> in their white robes, they're marching down this incredibly long, extraordinarily beautiful nave, which is actually it's from the word boat. so they're sailing towards this space, which is the tomb of saint peter. those candlesticks you see right now, they surround a confessio, a lowered area where we have the. tomb of saint
12:58 am
peter, which is visible now under the papal altar. and this is where the rite begins. it begins with with new pope leo the 14th at the tomb of saint peter, where he receives his very first insignia of this, this, this job. he has this mission. he has, as the 266 successor to the first pope. and you're looking at these insignia. so this is the podium draped around his shoulders. it's an ancient, ancient greco-roman idea of something that is worn. but in the course of christianity assimilating it, it became a symbol of the sheep. the pope is the good shepherd, carrying the sheep on his shoulders. and those three pins, symbols of the three nails of christ's crucifixion. so it's a it's a every single image is charged with, with meaning. there we are looking at the tomb
12:59 am
of saint peter, the hole in the ground. peter was executed for a crime he didn't commit 2000 years ago. his body was thrown in a hole in the ground right there. and all of the beautiful things you see around it spring from the sacrifice that that man made. so for pope leo the 14th, it is a reminder he has very big shoes to fill. >> i must say, father, and i am catholic. i was. born catholic, and nevertheless, when i've gone down to that tomb upon which this magnificent basilica is built, i have been with non-catholics, and there is a certain power to that place that is very difficult to describe. >> yes. and you see that. >> power, not just. >> if you're in the tomb, but if you're. >> anywhere in rome, because from that. >> tomb going all. >> the. >> way up through the, the. >> the cupola. >> of michelangelo's. >> basilica, there. >> is the. >> cross. >> and. the cross takes you
1:00 am
right down. so, in a sense. anywhere you are in rome, you have a. link to peter. >> who sacrificed himself. >> to. >> build the church, the. >> rock upon which. >> the church. >> was built. >> and i'll. >> never forget. >> once i think. >> it was. >> the former. >> archbishop of chicago, cardinal francis george, was. >> looking out when. >> i think pope. >> benedict was. >> announced. >> and. >> he thought of. >> all the. >> emperors nero and caesar, who. >> have since. >> vanished, he said. >> but here is. >> the successor. >> to peter, standing just. >> next to me in the next balcony. so it shows. the power of the. >> faith rooted in that. >> grave. >> to. >> flourish as the world is watching today. >> and chris white, as someone who goes there essentially to work every day and, and claudio can feel free to chime in on this as well. the power of that place as a tourist draw. but again, it always strikes me when i go in there the things that people stop and look at the way in a in a time when everybody
1:01 am
has their phone out and they're taking photos, there is often something that draws their attention that makes them stop for a moment. now, whether that's a religious experience, whether that's an artistic experience, whatever it is. but as we watch this beautiful ceremony begin to unfold, chris, talk about just the draw of that place as somewhere that people feel called to be. >> chris, i think we're we're. >> experiencing that. >> in. >> real time. >> in this moment. >> i mean, we. >> have not just. >> world leaders. >> but leaders. >> from every faith. tradition present. >> here for this occasion. >> and i think it's because of this draw the. >> office of the. of the papacy. yes. but this. >> place, that. >> and what it. represents the. >> office of peter. >> and the architecture. >> of course, only buttresses that. >> and i. think that is why we feel the. >> weight of the moment. >> when we. >> stand in. >> saint peter's. >> and when. >> we're there in.
1:02 am
>> this moment. >> watching, you know. the opening. >> of this first mass. it is. >> to draw. >> us in. >> to, to. >> to contemplate. >> you know. >> 2000 years of tradition. >> and we will begin with a simple phrase that any catholic knows. tu es petrus, you are peter. and on this rock i will build my church, the mass on vatican tv. let's listen. >> to. >> the. return of.
