3:02 pm
forward that show a man matching his description, that of the suspect appearing to, as you see here, gain access to one of those legislators homes through these fraudulent means, impersonating as the police when, according to the authorities, he's actually the perpetrator. the danger here is what officials also told reporters just earlier this evening. >> we are confirming he's a person of interest that we are looking to locate. we would ask the public, if you do locate him, to see him to call 911, do not approach him. you should consider him armed and dangerous, and you should call 911 immediately with the information. a little more information about those targeted individuals. state representative melissa hortman and her husband, mark, shot and killed state senator john hoffman and his wife yvette, injured. both lawmakers were members of the state's democratic party, and authorities are looking into how what they call a politically motivated assassination fits
3:03 pm
into the times and the tense moments that we've been living through, including this week. now, the minnesota congressional delegation released a joint statement as a show of unity, saying, quote, there is no place in our democracy for politically motivated violence and, quote, a president trump and other leaders in washington, in both parties have decried this type of violence. the president said, quote, such horrific violence will not be tolerated in america. we want to bring in nbc news correspondent adrienne broaddus in minnesota. what can you tell us about the latest state of affairs? >> hey there. >> ari, as you did mention, the fbi is now offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of that suspect, vance luther bulter. we cannot show his picture enough. if you take a look, this is who they are searching for. a white male, six one, weighing about 220 pounds. this is the latest photo that we have of him in that
3:04 pm
cowboy hat. that's the picture of him gaining access to the lawmaker's home there. but authorities fear he may be leaving the twin cities, not only the twin cities, but the state of minnesota after those horrific crimes were carried out earlier this morning. we also learned from the medical examiner just a short time ago, confirming the former minnesota house speaker melissa hortman, and her husband mark, died from multiple gunshot wounds at their house in brooklyn park that is a suburb of minneapolis. in a separate shooting, another incident state senator john hoffman and his wife were shot. both had surgery. we're told they are out of surgery, telling our affiliates here at our nbc station, kare11 news, that no major arteries were hit. they did say a bullet was lodged near the heart of senator hoffman, but it did not hit his heart. and they are expected to survive. but clearly the road to

recovery could be significant. i did speak with ron harris a short time ago. for those of you who are not familiar, he is the dnc executive committee person, and he was with all of them last night, and he talked to four people on that list. >> understood. and thank you. adrienne, we'll be checking back with you in our breaking coverage. i want to turn now out to los angeles. we've got reporters fanned out across the country giving more than one event these horrific politically motivated shootings. according to authorities in minnesota, the parade in washington, coinciding with the president's birthday and these no protests that we've been covering all day. jacob has some developments. so we're going to turn to jacob soboroff in los angeles. >> ari, last night joined you all here on msnbc. we were up a little bit closer, but we had to fall back a little bit because and i want to see if we can get closer to the marine corps there now retreating. you can come with me. you can see, ari, that
3:06 pm
the marine corps, which had advanced on the protesters here and had pushed these protesters off of the steps, excuse me, of the federal building here in los angeles, while agents from the department of homeland security were holding less than lethal weapons. you can see an officer from the department of homeland security hold one of those yellow, less than lethal weapons, as well as right here. another pushing back again. guys, let's fall back one more time, please. move back, move back, move back, move back. this is the marine corps pushing protesters here. and as you can hear, ari, they continue to say peaceful protest. so what they seem to be doing is. pushing people off the steps and then retreating up to the top of the steps and then coming back down. that's the second time that they've pushed people off the steps here, the federal building, of course, ari, this is the building where people were detained after ice raided them on friday. this is one of the federal buildings in la and
3:07 pm
part of the mission that the president united states, has tasked these marines with is defending federal property and federal personnel. this building would consist of that still peaceful people, still chanting peaceful protests. and that's been the theme of the day. but it certainly is a tense between the members of the united states military, california national guard, here on the steps of federal building in downtown. >> ari. jacob, you could tell us a little bit more about what happened, because as you've described there was before we were able to catch you on live cameras, what you were telling us that there was some push and pull and feel free to work with your camera person there within safety to show sort of what's happening, what else we can see there. because this has been quite, a quite a day. >> sure. >> all right. come with me. let's see if we can get in here again. jb is following me. excuse me guys. pardon me, excuse me. guys, see if we can take you right up to the front. ari. guys. pardon me. sorry. we're live on tv. let me try. if

3:10 pm
a lawmaker, the hoffman's, at 2 a.m. and enticed them, tricked them to come to the door, and he shot them both. and he didn't. he did not kill them. at 2 a.m, he left. so the neighbors, somebody called the police, maybe the survivors or the neighbors. and the police responded from the champlain, the town there, and the neighboring town. brooklyn park police also responded once they got there, the sergeant at brooklyn park, great police work, said, you know, we have lawmakers that live in our town. we better check their, you know, well-being as well. so they went to the residence of the former speaker and current democratic leader, miss hortman. and when they arrived, there's this phony police vehicle in the driveway and a man exiting dressed as a policeman. they engage in a shootout with him and then find the two deceased people inside the lawmaker and her husband. he then escapes into the dark on foot. he's quickly. in the
3:11 pm
ensuing hours, ari identified, i think, likely through the vehicle. he either, you know, was his or he borrowed it or he rented it. but and he left some writing in there with a list of lawmakers and other officials in minnesota that he apparently was going to attack. and he had some fliers about no kings day. they identified him. they put his picture out. he's he's out there. and of course, it's a very desperate situation. i don't think this guy planned on being discovered. i think he thought he was be able to commit these two murders and either go home or maybe attack the kings parade in the daylight. so that's where we are now, ari. >> captain monegan really similar. question your views. what you'd like to add for our understanding here. >> i imagine. >> this is being done. >> but you've got 200. >> members of that legislative body. >> in minnesota. each one. >> needs to. >> be accounted for immediately. i mean, it's. >> an hour and a. >> half gap between the. >> shooting at the hoffman.

3:13 pm
to know what he was doing for an hour and a half. hoffman residence was at 2 a.m, hoffman was at 330. we need to check on everybody within an hour's drive of the hoffman residence. make sure that they're safe to. >> yeah, and then? and then, jim, when the authorities say they do believe it's politically motivated, you referred to the practices here to try to get other potential targets as lawmakers to safety. that speaks to the authorities. looking at his motive. what else do you see as important there in a time where no one wants to jump too far ahead? but we are living through a very tense political time, and we've had shows of force from the federal government. i coming to you just after watching marines on the ground in la, doing what they've been ordered to do, but fairly unusual images for americans to see. so where does that fit all into this first, captain. >> it's tough to. >> try and prevent something like this, but i can tell you as
3:14 pm
far as police work, this is about as good as it gets. as our other guests just said, they responded to the hoffman shooting at 2 a.m. and had the wherewithal to think. once they found the manifesto. >> in the car. >> they realized it was politically motivated and thought to go check the hoffman residence. i mean, that's just fantastic police work. they got there right away. i mean, talk about the timing. they walked. there were a matter of seconds away from saving their lives. i mean, they really that's as good as it gets for police work. how much more can you do? intelligence information. we need to backtrack on this guy once he's caught. actually, they can start doing it right now. his coworkers, his cohorts, his family. did anybody have an idea? where did he make those photocopies? did anybody have a question about that? there's a lot we need to know. and did he have assistance from anybody? we need to know that, too. and if he did, those people need to be prosecuted as well. so going forward, if someone gets an idea like this in their head, maybe we can prevent it. maybe someone sees it, hears it, you know, the old, see something, say something. it's very tough to
3:15 pm
defend against something like this, though, jim. >> well, i think the captain's right. and i think what's important now is what's in the killer's mind. i think he did have a plan to kill these lawmakers, but i do think he was expecting to escape. either go home and lay low and nobody would know his identity, and he could flush out his list later. or he was maybe going to attack the king's parade because he had a lot of those fliers in his car. but either way, he wasn't planning on getting into a shootout with the brooklyn park police at 330 in the morning. that wasn't the plan. so now he's had a busted plan and he's out there. and you know what goes through someone's mind when they just murdered two people, shot two other people and got in a shootout with the police. this guy's been in three shootouts. in a matter of just a few hours. i can guarantee you he's not thinking very clearly. he's trying to escape. now. they pick
3:16 pm
him up on some cameras around the city with a cowboy hat. they pick him up in some other garb, so they think he might have changed. so he's he's trying. he's trying to live for now and maybe get away, maybe escape somewhere. but he'll need to carjack someone because he'll need money, he'll need food, he'll need transportation. we know he has a gun now, as a captain said, maybe there's confederates. certainly possible. he could have called someone for help. they could have helped him knowing he did the murder or helped him when they didn't know he did the murder. but he's a very desperate and dangerous man. and i'd say if he wants to live, he's probably going to kill to escape. and a killing to escape is a is a motive for violent crime. he could kill a trooper, a citizen somewhere to try to get away. so he's a very desperate hours. and. yes, ari, just to close, it's absolutely a political. he had a list of politicians. he shot two politicians and their spouses. it's political in his mind. there's some political reason

an incredible display we've seen so far, no signs of violence. there's been tremendous restraint and respect and hundreds of protests around the country. and in my view, that's maybe the best birthday gift we could offer to the army. and i say that as an army vet myself. >> yeah. and, paul, when you look at sort of this parade, which again, as we've taken pains to emphasize, is something a lot of people can get behind. you mentioned the national guard. you mentioned the events of this week. how do you think this stacks up against? what are also the concerns of some americans that it feels at times like a show of force or an effort to push militarization? the marines are following orders in la. we just had reporting on jacob soboroff out there, showing them trying to responsibly do crowd control. we didn't see anything going, you know, into a military. but there are a lot of experts we've heard from who said, that's not really the first, second or third thing the marines are usually supposed to do patrolling crowds in la. >> i understand those concerns.
3:39 pm
i share those concerns. i think this military parade is wrong for any number, a number of reasons, but especially because it continues to insert our military in the politics of this country. trump continues to make it seem like they're his military. the speech at fort bragg this week was disgusting and shameful and unprecedented. and even the deployment of the national guard is an escalation that's unnecessary and an abuse of power. and the marines in la is the next step. and i think what we'll see tonight, you know, so far so good in d.c, but you'll probably see trump give an overtly political speech at the end of it, which will contaminate the whole thing and continue to pull our troops into a place where america trusts them less because he's manipulating them, because he's he's politicizing them, because he's abusing them. he's reducing their popularity. and that's really dangerous because americans don't respect them as much. americans don't trust them as much. americans fear them in some places. and that's understandable, as they see this increased militarization that culminates with this. but it's also important, i think, to
3:40 pm
note, ari, this is not the end. this is the playbook going forward. so this parade is probably the first of many. and this is part of trump's larger plan to expand his grip on power and to leverage the military as an instrument of that power. >> yeah. and ali velshi, i want to give you the final word out there on the ground. anything else that you're seeing or that we should understand about what we're witnessing there in washington tonight? >> well, you know, i think paul makes an interesting point. there are a lot of people here who are not getting involved in the political discussion on the ground, but they're showing their politics on their t shirts, on their hats. but people have sort of gone out of their way to tell me that they feel that they're here because of the army. you got a lot of people with army paraphernalia with, you know, who are veterans or moms of veterans or wives of veterans or daughters of veterans, whatever the case is, husbands of veterans or army wives and army sons, that's what it feels like on the ground. this doesn't feel like a political rally. interestingly enough, i did. i did mention that when they announced pete hegseth and jd vance and donald trump. massive round of applause
3:41 pm
throughout the entire place. but to the extent that on the ground, it feels a little less political. i will say, by the way, there are people walking through with no signs, with signs that are critical of donald trump. not a lot, a handful, but but there's no tension between those sides. in fact, i saw somebody being escorted out, and i think it was just because they had a sign that was bigger than you're allowed to have on the ground here, but there's no pushing, there's no shoving, there's no name calling. it's got a slightly subdued vibe here on the on the, on the ground there. they're cheering as various parts of the army marched by. so that's the distinction between what may be happening at 10,000ft with the president and what's happening on the ground here. >> a really important distinction, which is why we benefit from your reporting on the ground, ali velshi, and given us sort of how that feels and what you've been seeing all day and talking to the real people who showed up. so really appreciate that. good for us to understand a little more. and paul rakoff, with your views and thank you. i think it's fitting today to say thank you for your service as well. thanks to both service as well. thanks to both of you. we'll
