free. text k to 231231. >> good evening and. >> welcome to. >> politics nation. >> tonight's lead. >> the decider. >> tonight, our notoriously. >> impulsive president. >> has a lot. >> of tough decisions to make as the nation. faces a crisis within. >> our borders and around. >> the world. >> hanging over. >> it all. >> is the. >> escalating war between israel and iran. trump says he'll
2:01 pm
decide whether to attack iran's nuclear sites within the next two weeks, despite our spy. agency saying. iran doesn't. >> have a bomb. >> we'll see what comes out of an intelligence briefing at the white house expected in the next hour. but democrats on the hill are already preparing to stop the president from starting a. war without congress, while their republican colleagues are distracted by internal squabbles over the president's so-called big budget bill. meanwhile, the. country continues. >> to. >> watch immigration agents in los angeles snatch migrants off the street, flanked by national guard troops. that has that. the president has deployed. the federal appeals court gave trump a win on that matter this week, but his ability to detain immigrants indefinitely may be in jeopardy after a key court decision on yesterday. more on
2:02 pm
that and everything else tonight on politics nation. we start with president trump, who at this very moment is on his way from his new jersey golf club, back to the white house for meeting with his national security team in just about an hour. with me now is holly gharana joining us from london? holly. holly, why why? this meeting is about to take place. what do we know about the latest from the region? >> well, iran. >> and israel have continued to. >> trade strikes. israel said that it struck struck dozens. >> of targets. >> inside of iran. >> and reverend, quite. >> significantly. >> it struck. >> an area. called bandar abbas. this is near the strait. >> of hormuz. they're saying. >> they're hitting. >> military targets, but this. >> is an area very closely affiliated with the. regime in iran. >> so it's raising concern.
2:03 pm
>> within iran that israel isn't just going after the nuclear program. it is also aiming for regime collapse in the country, with untold consequences. across the region. the other big. >> question. >> of course, and you mentioned it in the intro, is whether or not the united states is going to join in. that is. really the only question hanging over this tension, this conflict that's entered its ninth day since israel launched attacks on israel on june 13th. and there is, you know, depending on the day, depending on the source, either the idea is that president trump is listening to one wing of his sort of advisory circle on iran and is going to jump in and on another day, it could be that he is pursuing diplomatic solutions. for example, the foreign minister of iran told andrea mitchell. nbc's andrea mitchell over the weekend in geneva that there still is communication between the u.s. and iran. so there is an open
2:04 pm
channel. so will the president use that channel to try to come up with a diplomatic solution, or will this turn into a region wide and indeed worldwide conflict that includes the united states? >> now, i want to ask you this briefly. what is the view from europe on this conflict? do they want a peaceful resolution or do they see this as an opportunity for a military strike to push the iranians to come to the negotiating table? >> no. >> i would say that the european powers here, whether it's the uk where i am france with emmanuel macron or germany, they in fact met the iranian foreign minister in geneva. they want a diplomatic solution. they don't want a war that involves the united states with, as i mentioned, untold consequences, not just strategically, economically. bandar abbas that was struck by the israeli military is near the strait of hormuz. you know, a huge a huge
2:05 pm
portion of the world's energy supplies go through that strait. if there is a region wide conflict, you know, there you have a big economic hit on world powers including the uk, france, germany and many, many others know they are really pushing. they are trying to negotiate something that is on the diplomatic front, and they are also, you know, there is some they're not very comfortable with the unpredictability coming out of washington. as i mentioned one day, the belief is that the u.s. might join and the next that it will seek a diplomatic solution. so there is a bit of a bit of discomfort, disquiet in that sense, rev. >> all right. thank you. nbc's hala gorani in london, england. joining me now is congressman james clyburn, democrat of south carolina. congressman, thank you for being with us. let me go right to it. the president says
2:06 pm
he will decide in the next two weeks whether the us will strike iran's nuclear facilities, despite our intelligence community insisting iran does not have nuclear weapons. in congress, there's some division among democrats over how to handle the crisis, with some lawmakers pushing to stop the president from declaring war without congressional approval. should congress use this two week window to press trump to seek its consent on attacking iran? as the war powers act still seems to require? >> well. >> thank you very much for having me, reverend. absolutely. i am. applaud the senator kaine. >> of virginia. who raised this issue. >> several days ago. and it's kind of interesting here. the same. >> country, iran. factors into the last time we made this kind.
2:07 pm
>> of a decision. >> without involving the congress. and you see where they got us. >> and now we are trying to get out of. >> that hole. and it would seem to me that it would. >> go without any discussion, that we would take this. >> issue directly. >> to the congress. >> get the congress involved. >> in this. develop some kind. >> of. >> consensus as to what we. >> should do, how we should do it, when we should do it. and then. let's see. whether the. american people will come. >> along with us. but just acting in a long range fashion is not. >> the way to go. >> and i thought. >> we had learned our lessons. >> on that. >> now, pro-palestinian activist mahmoud khalil is free tonight after a federal judge ordered an end to his three month detention by the trump administration over his criticisms of israel. the administration is appealing the
2:08 pm
decision, blasting it as judicial overreach. but take a listen to khalil's message to america's immigrants earlier today. >> whether you are a citizen, an immigrant, anyone on this land, you're not illegal. that doesn't make you less of a human. and this is what the administration is trying to do to dehumanize me, to dehumanize the, the immigrants, to dehumanize anyone who actually does not agree. >> congressman, does khalil's release mark a turning point in the president's immigration purge? >> i don't think so. >> i think that what is happening. >> here is that. >> the judicial. system that. >> we rely upon in these instances finally stepped up. >> it's been three months. i think probably. >> two months. >> and 29 days too late. but
2:09 pm
better. >> late than never. >> so the system is beginning. >> to work. >> and i would. hope that. the appeal is taken up. rather quickly so. that everybody can get some definition to their lives. you know, i came out of it like you. we came out of a protest movement. this country was born out of a protest movement. that's what the boston tea party was. it was a protest. so that's fundamental to this country. and so there's nothing wrong with protesting. and we ought not allow any kind of intervention to throw cold water on those expressing first amendment rights. and so i would think that this is not a turning point, but maybe the judicial system is stepping in at a very
2:10 pm
critical time. now, vice president jd vance was in los angeles yesterday. he bashed california democrats who've condemned trump's migrant purge in the city, like senator alex padilla, who was forced out of a dhs news conference last week by federal agents. take a listen to how vance miss names padilla and how the senator responds. >> well. >> i was hoping jose padilla would be here to ask a question, but unfortunately, i guess he decided not to show up because there wasn't the theater. >> he knows my name. he knows my name. look, sadly, it's just an indicator of how petty and unserious this administration is. he's the vice president of the united states. do you think he'd take the situation in los angeles more seriously? >> now, for context, jose padilla is a us citizen
2:11 pm
convicted of supporting the al qaeda terror group in 2007 and sentenced to 21 years in prison. so clearly, that was not the name of the governor, and i suspect vice president vance may have known that. but what do you take from vance's comments, congressman? >> well. >> i don't really know. vance on a personal basis. >> we've met. >> i've observed him for a while. i do know alex. >> on a very personal basis. >> i do know his name. i do know him. he is probably one of the most. subdued personalities that i've ever been around. when i first met him, he was secretary of state out in california. and when i came away from that meeting, came back east. i told dozens of people what i thought
2:12 pm
about him. and as we would say, all good. and so for him to be insulted this way and for the vice president of the united states to disregard disrespect the united states senator, the way he did in this instance is beyond the pale. but i guess we're getting to the point that we're going to expect that from this administration. and that's a shame. now, let me go to this issue. trump complained during this week's juneteenth holiday that america has, quote, too many non-working holidays costing our country billions of dollars to keep all these businesses closed. end quote. de president making this complaint on federal holidays that don't celebrate black american freedom struggles. and mind you, he was all about juneteenth when he was courting black voters in 2020.
2:13 pm
saying that. and he, quote, i'm quoting he made juneteenth very juneteenth, very famous this year. he didn't even acknowledge the day by name. what's your reaction, congressman? well, my answer is this. i suspect that the sweet spot for president trump would be to eliminate january 15th. eliminate june 19th, and we will have exactly the number of federal holidays that he would find appropriate. and i think you get my drift. your drift? january 15th martin luther king holiday. absolutely. and of course, june 19th is what we celebrated this weekend, juneteenth. let me raise this with you. this week, we also marked the 10th anniversary of the racist massacre at mother emanuel ame church, which is right there in your charleston, south carolina district. you and several house democrats marked
2:14 pm
the anniversary by reintroducing legislation to close a loophole that allowed the shooter to buy the gun he used to kill nine members of mother emanuel, including its pastor, my friend reverend pinckney. and you knew many of some of those that were killed. how how would this proposal have saved their lives, congressman? >> well. >> this young man and i would call him that out of respect for his gender. got that gun because of a loophole that we have in our laws. the loophole is simply this. you have three days in which you have to wait for a background check, or if it's not completed, you can go ahead and get the gun. now something happened, and this young man who had no who was not eligible to
2:15 pm
have a gun, he had a record that made him ineligible to purchase a gun. so i don't know whether he put the address in wrong or somebody keyed the address wrong, but something went wrong during the background check and did not. they did not catch it. they caught it. but it's beyond the third day, i think it was around the fifth or sixth day when they caught it. but by this time he had the gun and he set out to do what he had planned to do for a long time. and i think it's worth us mentioning this. this was not haphazard. this young man selected that church because of its history, right? he studied the history of the church. there were 5 or 6 churches on his list, but this one had the most history to it. and he thought that if he did what he did, it would start in
2:16 pm
his words. a race war. it didn't start a race war, but it should not have been able to get the gun in the first place. so what we are attempting to do is close that loophole, and my republican friends are refusing to close that loophole. you mentioned reverend pinckney, and you knew him very well. he was an intern in my office when he was a college student in columbia at elon university. he became a very close friend over the years, lived in my congressional district. that church is in my congressional district. i know almost every one of those people, some of them very personally. and so this is a very personal thing with me and my family, and i am really appalled that my republican friends refuse to allow us to
2:17 pm
close this loophole. and that's just a shame. before i let you go, congressman, new yorkers are about to nominate a new democratic candidate for mayor. a few of the top candidates came by my national action network rally in the past few weeks. and this week, you endorsed former new york governor andrew cuomo. can you tell us why? i've had a long relationship with andrew cuomo. when he was secretary of hud, i was sitting in the congress and i put together five votes in the house of representatives when president bill clinton was putting this budget together. and if you recall, that budget passed by only two votes. five people, all southerners, got together in the house and negotiated for on that budget for our votes. and one of the things we negotiated for was
2:18 pm
to make sure that rural communities, southern communities, got to benefit from bill clinton's empowerment zones and enterprise communities legislation. we voted for it. bill clinton committed to us. and one of those empowerment zones became the sumter, my birthplace, columbia, my residence, empowerment zone. the $100 million program. i negotiated all of that with what was then secretary of hud. and now past president, now past governor, and now running for mayor of new york. and that's my cuomo and i have maintained a relationship over these years. and he called me and asked the continue or someone called me on
2:19 pm
his behalf and asked me, was i still my relationship with him? and i told him yes. they asked, would i support him? and i told him yes. and so that's what this is all about, that somebody i've been working with for a long time now, you know, i'm kind of kind of interesting. you know, i didn't drop out of the sky. i've been. i've owned my first campaign button as a 12 year old. i became president of my youth council of the naacp before my 13th birthday. and so i've been working in politics and civil rights almost over 70 years. and so when you develop these relationships with people over the years, you don't just drop them because there is somebody else to consider. yeah. i don't have anything against the other people in the race. i know 1 or 2 of them. i don't know all of them. right. but
2:20 pm
people are free to support who they want to. and i'm not against any of them. i'm just for cuomo, and i've been for him for a long time. all right. i'm going to leave it there. thank you for being with us, as always. south carolina congressman jim clyburn, the one and only jim clyburn, thank you again. coming up, i'll share my thoughts on president trump's rejection of juneteenth and why the snub is about way more than just a holiday. stay tuned. >> work, play. >> blink. relief. >> work. >> play. blink. relief. >> play. blink. relief. >> the only if you're living with diabetes, i'll tell you the same thing i tell my patients. getting on dexcom g7 is one of the easiest ways to take better control of your diabetes and help protect yourself from the long-term health problems it can cause.

many non-working holidays that he claims are costing the country billions of dollars. trump didn't seem very concerned about the cost of celebrations when he was presiding over a $45 million military parade in washington just last weekend, nor has he ever been a past hater of holidays. earlier this year, he said he would bring columbus day back from the ashes. but when it comes to juneteenth, the president, this president and his administration simply refuses to even pay lip service to the holiday. white house press secretary caroline caroline leavitt wouldn't say whether any official proclamation would be issued, even though trump had supported the idea of making juneteenth a federal holiday during his 2020 campaign. the pentagon, meanwhile, ordered a passive approach to juneteenth,

bipartisanship on this one. we've seen conservatives who've also pushed back against what could be another endless war, what could be, you know, a strong departure from from president trump's former messaging around not wanting to get involved in the middle east and calling the previous middle eastern wars essentially a waste of our time, our, our assets and quite frankly, our, our military might. i think that what we're seeing at this point amongst democrats is a call one to look towards this president who argued about affordability, who argued that he was going to bring down the price of eggs, but also someone who does not have the posturing, who does not have the understanding of middle of the middle east or its foreign policy, who also is utilizing this time frame to be a puppet of netanyahu, rather than a harbinger of what it means to be an american, and the american progress that we've made thus far as it relates to standing outside of these wars, it is in no uncertain terms that the american public does not want to engage in another middle eastern conflict, point blank period. they do not want to see our boots on the ground. they do not want to have us engage in

something that we may not be able to get out of, and something that will cost us billions of dollars down the road that dog don't hunt. so for president trump, he's going to have to figure this out because the weariness of america, americans, to want to get involved and engage in another middle eastern conflict is extremely low. and from what we've seen from twitter, from what we've seen from his truth social, he's sending mixed messages left, right and sideways. he has a dni that he doesn't trust. and right now, you know, our foreign policy is in shambles. >> carlos, let's talk about that division within the president's own base over whether to go to war with iran. his former advisor, steve bannon, was seen at the white house this week. he's been arguing against a us strike. how troublesome could this split be for trump politically? >> well, this is a big deal. >> the united states. >> at least. >> since world war two, has a very consistent record. >> of defending. >> our. >> allies. >> of supporting freedom, democracy and other values.

2:37 pm
mamdani. michelle, what trends have you noticed in this race and what message has it sent about the future of your party? >> well, a couple of things. first and foremost, that sins can be forgiven. i think that for many people who had written off cuomo just a few years ago, many of them also democratic leaders who've now come back to endorse him in his run for mayor, it is shown that, you know, time heals all wounds and in some cases, for democrats are also reading the tea leaves of actual voters. we've seen black voters, we've seen latino voters, we've seen voters across age demographics come out in. and if the polls are to be believed, support andrew cuomo. so at this point, it is the party going to stand behind him? we've seen time and time again, even with the new york times writing a pretty scathing review that people, voters in new york have decided that they're going to stand by him. we've also heard from we've heard from our wonderful south carolinian, who's come out and stood beside
2:38 pm
him as well. when we're talking about another democratic party leader. i think that for the party, it is saying that this crazy litmus test, which i believe was always incorrect, this crazy litmus test of perfection for our party leaders, for those who are running for office, is something that democrats are going to have to throw away. voters are going to make their decisions. many voters in new york city believe that andrew cuomo has the he has the prowess. he has the strength. he has the policy leadership. he has the background when it comes to what he was able to accomplish as governor, to do things in new york city, a city that right now is overburdened by cost. that is one that, you know, housing affordability matters. that is one that's battling so much they believe in him. so i do think that there are some moves that the party is going to have to make to ensure that they are not, in some ways, blocking their own blessings when it comes to forgiving. >> somehow i get the impression you think cuomo's going to win. there are others in the race. i'm not endorsing anyone yet. my thanks to my political panel, former congressman carlos curbelo and political strategist
