Medfly Medley
by -Ing
-Ing = Charles Rice Goff III & Steve Schaer
Recorded in October, 1982, "Medfly Medley" highlights the time period when -Ing was refining the art of interpreting its own unique compositions. Equipped with a recently-upgraded and extremely reliable Frippertronics-style audio loop system, Goff and Schaer performed this half hour of uninterrupted music, which smoothly flows from piece to piece through the following set:
Rosie Notes
Whirring During (First Movement)
The Banquet (by Gordon Lyon/Temporarily KY)
The Banquet/Rosie Notes (Interplay)
Whirring During (Second & Third Movement)
Hallways Of Always/Rosie Notes (Interplay)
Canons For You
Stone Soup (Improvisation)
BACKGROUND:
Between 1980 and the spring of 1982, -Ing's Frippertronics-style audio tape loop set-up had given birth to a large library of recorded improvisations. Goff experimented with excerpting and overdubbing bits from these tapes when constructing his 1980 "Might As Well Beyond Venus" album, creating what became the first properly-named recordings attributed to -Ing. In 1981, he took more excerpts to San Francisco's Hyde Street Studios to create the backbones for what became three elaborately collaged –Ing recordings. Additionally in 1981, Goff started writing notation for -Ing to incorporate into its Frippertronic loops. During their many recording sessions, Goff and Schaer also enjoyed playing around with bits from songs that they had often performed together when they were members of the band: Temporarily KY.
By the spring of 1982, -Ing was injecting live interpretations of all these various bits of music into its studio improv sessions. These were initially executed with a randomness inspired by big doses of spontaneous whim. But by the autumn of 1982, Goff and Schaer had sharpened their skills at interpreting their compositions to the point that they felt they would be able to perform a "set" of such pieces for a live audience.
Because -Ing's compositions had all been constructed from improvisations, Goff and Schaer's live interpretations relied heavily on spur-of-the-moment interactions. While maintaining the natural rhythms that came from playing through their tape loop system, they could change pitches, rhythms, and sequences of notes to create all sorts of unique versions of what was (at least to them) a recognizable "song." Schaer was particularly adept at altering the filters and effects of his ARP Odyssey synthesizer to produce unique-sounding melodies. Goff's extensive use of a volume/wah-wah pedal, combined with a few distortion boxes, a chromium slide, a vibrator, and various other unusual plectra, allowed him to create notes and washes from his Fender Telecaster that had little relation to what is normally considered "guitar" music.
Perhaps what gave -Ing music its most special quality, however, was the mental link that Goff and Schaer had cultivated from improvising together for several years. "Medfly Medley" highlights exactly how their intuitive musical interactions could create an intriguing lot from a just a few fragmented ideas. Establishing the parameters for how to "play" their music prepared Goff and Schaer for performing publicly in 1983 and 1984. Goff and Schaer distributed tapes of "Medfly Medley" to several radio stations, club owners, and independent music labels to ready the world for this public debut.
"Medfly Medley" is Volume Three of the "Unveiled -INGredients" series of audio recordings. Schaer and Goff recorded many hours of tape loop experiments as "-Ing" between 1980 and 1984. Most of the reel-to-reel tapes from those sessions have long since disappeared. Steve Schaer himself sadly left behind the world of the living in 1998 as well. However, in 2019, Steve's widow, Dee Ann, discovered some cassette copies of a few of the original -Ing reels, which Schaer had recorded back in the 1980s. She passed these off to Robert Silverman (one of the original -Ing artists represented on -Ing's first public release), and he forwarded them to Goff in the spring of 2020. The "Unveiled -INGredients" series was created from these cassette recordings.
