Synopsis Mr. Hekmati is a new teacher in a school in the south of Tehran. His pupils are unruly and he is forced to expel one of them. Next day, the boy's sister, `Atefeh, comes to the school and, thinking that Mr. Hekmati is the headmaster, protest, the expulsion.
Another boy spreads rumors that Mr. Hekmati and `Atefeh are having a love affair. While trying to set the record straight, he suddenly finds he really is in love with her.
Mean while, Aqa Rahim, the local butcher, has lent 'Atefeh1s family a house and hopes to marry her. When he hears the rumors, he beats up Mr. Hekmati. Mr. Hekmati gradually wins the respect of his pupils, for whom he builds an auditorium. But when the boys cheer Mr. Hekmati louder than the headmaster at the annual school show, Mr. Hekmati is transferred to another school and 'Atefeh has to decide between her love for him, and her gratitude towards Aqa Rahim.
Downpour was awarded a special jury plaque at the First Tehran International Film Festival in 1972, and best film, best screenplay, best actor prizes at the Fifth Iranian National Film Festival "Sepas" in 1973, and Diploma of International Critics Society (S.I.D.A.L.C).
