Accelerate the recovery of bowel function. Promotes the production of body fluids and has a tranquilizing effect.
Ginseng oligopeptides (GOP), small-molecular oligopeptides isolated from ginseng, have been proven to have anti-fatigue effects. A. catechu L. (Binlang) has the function in Chinese medicine of promoting the circulation of Qi, and there is evidence that, one of its components, arecoline, affects gastrointestinal motility by direct binding to M receptors. P. persica Batsch (Taoren) has the function in Chinese medicine of improving blood circulation and relaxing the bowels and there is evidence that its extract can lower blood viscosity. L. aggregata Kosterm (Wuyao) has the function in Chinese medicine of promoting Qi circulation to relieve pain and one of its components. Total alkaloids have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. F. amomi (Sharen) has the functions in Chinese medicine of removing dampness to restore the normal function of the stomach, while its water extract has a role in promoting gastrointestinal peristalsis. This combination of herbs is used in some chinese hospitals to speed up recovery of gasrtrointestinal surgery patients.

* BA WEI DI HUANG WAN - 八味地黄丸 - Eight-Ingredient Formula With Rehmannia
ACTIONS - Warms and Tonifies Kidney Yang.
SYNDROMES - Kidney Yang Deficiency. Leg Qi. Tan Yin. Xiao Ke. Jin Ye Stasis. Atrophy disorder (Wei Syndrome) due to Liver and Kidney Deficiency.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Aversion to Cold. Watery stools with undigested food. Lower back pain. Weakness of the lower extremities. A cold sensation in the lower half of the body. Tenseness in the lower abdomen. Pain and cramps in the lower abdomen. Panting and irritability to the point of having difficulty lying down. Will breathe most comfortably while leaning against something. Nocturia. May be numbness in the lower abdomen. Urinary difficulty with edema or Spasmodic pain in the lower abdomen. Excessive urination. If severe, may be incontinence of urine. May have persistent diarrhea. Dizziness. Vertigo. Dysuria. May have flushed face (Yang floating upward). Thirst with frequent, copious urination (Xiao Ke). Fatigue (severe). May have severe perspiration (Yang floating upward). Constipation. Lassitude. Pale face. Edema of the face and feet. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with Yin Deficiency with dry mouth and throat and a red tongue with no coat. Use with caution for those with gastrointestinal weakness. Contraindicated for those with marked ascites. Contraindicated for those with frequent diarrhea. Contraindicated for those with facial flushing with fever. Contraindicated during pregnancy. ACTIONS - Drains Heat. Breaks up Blood Stasis. Invigorates the Blood. Disperses nodules. Reduces swelling.
SYNDROMES - Early Stage Intestinal Abscess. Heat and Blood Stagnation.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Lower abdominal distention and pain (usually on right). Pain increases on pressure with rebound tenderness. Guarding of the abdominal musculature. Groin pain resembling urinary dysfunction without urinary difficulty. Groin pain relieved by flexing hip and knee. Groin pain intensified by extending hip. Perspiration. Irregular or intermittent fever followed by chills and perspiration. May be mass in lower right quadrant of abdomen. Aversion to Cold. Hard lumps.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with necrotic appendicitis. Contraindicated for those with appendicitis with peritonitis. Contraindicated for infants with appendicitis. Contraindicated for those with appendicitis due to parasites. Contraindicated during Pregnancy. Use extreme caution in the weak and elderly.
NOTES - Before pus is formed, the pain is severe with localized hardness and Heat. When fully formed, the Heat and pain diminish, the tissues are more relaxed and the pulse is tight.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Da Huang - Drains Heat and breaks up Blood Stasis.
-Mang Xiao - Purges, softens hardness, eliminates stagnation, clears Heat and moistens Dryness. With Da Huang, for constipation due to Stomach and Intestinal Heat.
-Mu Dan Pi - Cools Blood, clears Heat and eliminates masses due to Blood Stasis. With Da Huang, for unsuppurated abdominal abscess with pain, constipation and low grade fever.
-Tao Ren - Breaks up Blood Stasis, invigorates Blood, moistens Intestines and unblocks bowels. With Da Huang, for severe abdominal infection. With Da Huang and Mang Xiao, for Intestinal Abscess with pain and swelling.
-Dong Gua Ren - Expels pus, eliminates Heat and reduces abscesses, especially in the Intestines. With Da Huang and Mu Dan Pi, for Intestinal Abscess.

ACTIONS - Promotes urination. Eliminates urinary calculi.
SYNDROMES - Urinary Bladder Damp-Heat. Stone Lin. Urinary calculi.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Burning urinary pain. Frequent urination. Urgent urination. Yellowish red, turbid urine. Small stones in the urine. Sudden discontinuation of urination. Subtle pain in the lower abdomen and low back.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated during pregnancy.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Shi Wei - Clears Damp-Heat, unblocks Lin, clears stones and stops bleeding. With Qu Mai and Hua Shi, for painful urination due to Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao. With Qu Mai, Hua Shi and Dong Kui Zi, for hematuria. With Pu Huang, for Blood Lin with stabbing pain. With Che Qian Zi and Qu Mai, for Heat Lin.
-Mu Tong - Promotes urination. With Dong Kui Zi, for urinary frequency, pain and difficulty. With Che Qian Zi, for Lin Syndrome and Heart Fire Transferring to the Small Intestine channel causing edema and painful urinary dysfunction.
-Che Qian Zi - Promotes urination and clears Heat. With Dong Kui Zi, for urinary calculi. With Mu Tong and Huan Shi, for Lin Syndrome.
-Qu Mai - Promotes urination, drains Damp-Heat from Urinary Bladder, unblocks Lin and breaks up Blood Stasis. With Che Qian Zi and Huan Shi, for Heat dysuria (Re Lin) with burning and pain during urination.
-Dong Kui Zi - Promotes urination and unblocks Lin. With Mu Tong, for Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao and pediatric Lin.
-Hua Shi - Promotes urination, drains Heat from Urinary Bladder, expels Damp-Heat through the urine and aids movement of gravel and stones. SYNDROMES - Fire Toxin leading to Blood Stasis in the sinews and Blood vessels.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Ulcerated sores that do not heal on a limb that is dark red. Slightly swollen and warm to the touch. There may me a rotten smell to the lesion. Gangrene of the extremities, especially the fingers and toes with purulent abscess. Extreme pain. Local inflammation and swelling. There may be copious discharge of pus from the ulcers. A burning sensation. Fever. Thirst.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with Cold, Qi Deficiency or Blood Deficiency. Avoid scratching the affected area while taking this formula.
NOTES - This condition may be attributed to long standing Kidney Deficiency, Wind-Cold-Damp Bi, overindulgence in rich, greasy or spicy foods or improper use of Yang Tonics. More than one factor is usually involved.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Jin Yin Hua - Clears Heat and relieves toxicity. With Gan Cao, for toxic swellings and sores. With Gan Cao and Xuan Shen, for sloughing ulcers from Heat toxicity. With Dang Gui, reduces obstruction and toxicity for swollen, painful sores and necrosis of surrounding tissue.
-Xuan Shen - Clears Heat, cools the Blood, nourishes Yin, drains Fire and relieves toxicity. With Jin Yin Hua and Gan Cao, for boils, carbuncles and furuncles.
-Dang Gui - Nourishes, invigorates and harmonizes Blood, reduces swelling, expels pus, generates flesh and alleviates pain.
-Gan Cao - Clears Heat, relieves Fire toxicity, alleviates pain and moderates and harmonizes the properties of other herbs. With Jin Yin Hua, for Damp rashes or acne.

CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with True Heat with False Cold (C.M.: cold extremities, thirst with a desire for cold drinks, dark urine. Stop this formula immediately once the hands and feet have warmed up.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
With Gan Jiang and Gan Cao strengthens the actions of fortifying Qi and benefiting the Yang for Cold extremities and diarrhea with undigested food due to Collapse of the Spleen and Kidney Yang.
-Gan Jiang - Warms the Middle Jiao and Lungs, transforms thin mucus, expels Cold, rescues Yang, warms the channels (unblocks the pulse) and stops bleeding. With Fu Zi, for Cold-Damp Bi. With Gan Cao, for epigastric pain and vomiting due to Spleen and Stomach Deficiency Cold and detoxifies Fu Zi.
-Gan Cao - Tonifies Qi, strengthens the Spleen and moderates the drying properties of the formula.

Accelerate the recovery of bowel function. Promotes the production of body fluids and has a tranquilizing effect.
Ginseng oligopeptides (GOP), small-molecular oligopeptides isolated from ginseng, have been proven to have anti-fatigue effects. A. catechu L. (Binlang) has the function in Chinese medicine of promoting the circulation of Qi, and there is evidence that, one of its components, arecoline, affects gastrointestinal motility by direct binding to M receptors. P. persica Batsch (Taoren) has the function in Chinese medicine of improving blood circulation and relaxing the bowels and there is evidence that its extract can lower blood viscosity. L. aggregata Kosterm (Wuyao) has the function in Chinese medicine of promoting Qi circulation to relieve pain and one of its components. Total alkaloids have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. F. amomi (Sharen) has the functions in Chinese medicine of removing dampness to restore the normal function of the stomach, while its water extract has a role in promoting gastrointestinal peristalsis. This combination of herbs is used in some chinese hospitals to speed up recovery of gasrtrointestinal surgery patients.

SYNDROMES - Wind-Cold Damp Bi with Dampness Predominant. Wind-Damp Bi with Blood Deficiency. Atrophy disorder (Wei Syndrome) due to Damp-Heat.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Numbness and pain of the extremities. Joint swelling and pain, especially hands and feet. Heaviness of joints. Numbness of the joints. Stiffness of the joints. Fever. Heaviness of the body. Coldness of the body. Dizziness. Likes pressure. Fatigue. Pale complexion. Preference for warmth. Swelling, pain, numbness and stiffness of the joints. Skin cornification.
NOTES - This formula is commonly used for Bi Syndrome that does not respond to treatment or was improperly treated at the acute stage and is becoming chronic.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Ma Huang - Releases the Exterior, disperses Cold, promotes urination and reduces edema. With Gui Zhi for Wind-Cold excess conditions with fever and chills but no sweat and Wind-Cold-Damp Bi.
-Gui Zhi - Releases external Wind-Cold from the muscle layer. harmonizes the Ying and Wei, warms the channels and collaterals to relieve pain, disperses Cold, unblocks Yang and transforms the Qi and warms and facilitates the flow of Blood through the vessels. With Bai Shao -For external Wind-Cold with disharmony between the Ying and Wei, with spontaneous sweating.
-Dang Gui - Tonifies, invigorates and harmonizes the Blood, disperses Cold and alleviates pain. With Zhi Gan Cao -moderates spasms and relieves abdominal pain.
-Bai Shao - Alleviates pain, nourishes Blood, astringes Yin and adjusts the Ying and Wei. With Dang Gui -Nourishes Yin and Blood.
-Cang Zhu with Hei Zhi Ma (included) - Strongly dries Dampness, tonifies the Spleen, expels Wind-Dampness, clears Dampness from the Lower Jiao and releases the Exterior, Nourishes and fortifies Liver and Kidney Yin, nourishes Jing and Blood and extinguishes Wind.
-Bai Zhu - Tonifies the Spleen and augments Qi, dries Dampness and promotes water metabolism, stabilizes the Exterior and stops sweating.
-Yi Yi Ren - Promotes urination, leaches out Dampness, strengthens the Spleen, clears Heat, expels pus, expels Wind-Dampness and soothes numbness. With Ma Huang, Gui Zhi and Cang Zhu, for Wind-Damp Bi.
-Gan Cao - Alleviates pain and moderates and harmonizes the properties of other herbs.
-Sheng Jiang - Releases the Exterior, induces perspiration, disperses Cold and reduces the toxicity of other herbs. With Gui Zhi, strongly induces sweating for treatment of External Wind-Cold with chills, fever, body aches and anhidrosis. With Ma Huang, strongly creates sweating to treat all externally contracted Wind-Cold disorders.
