ACTIONS - Activates Qi. Descends Rebellious Qi. Eliminates Phlegm. Dissipates clumps. Relieves Stagnation.
SYNDROMES - Liver Qi Stagnation: Phlegm and Qi Stagnant and Blocked (Plum-Pit Qi Stagnation). Qi Stasis with Phlegm Retention.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - A feeling of obstruction in throat as if a slice of roast meat were stuck there which cannot be coughed up nor swallowed down. This sensation becomes more prominent during emotional upset and subsides when relaxed. Distention and pain in the sides or flanks. Suffocating sensation in the chest. Tendency to sigh. Melancholy. Depression. Hypochondriac pain. Coughing with profuse phlegm. Vomiting. Difficulty swallowing. A delicate constitution. A tendency towards fatigue. Palpitations. Abdominal distention. Muscular and skin flaccidity. Fear. Edema. Asthma. Insomnia. A stifling sensation in the chest and hypochondrium. Irritability. Inappropriate anger. Women: Irregular menses. Dysmenorrhea. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with chest pain due to Lung Yin Deficiency with red cheeks, a bitter taste in the mouth and a red tongue with a scanty coating. Contraindicated for those with Heat due to Qi Stagnation. Do not use long term.

-Ban Xia - Dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm, stops vomiting, descends rebellious Qi and harmonizes the Stomach. With Hou Pu, for Phlegm-induced cough, vomiting, and epigastric and abdominal distention, Phlegm-Dampness with Qi Stagnation with a sensation of fullness in the chest with coughing and wheezing, nausea, vomiting and a sensation of distention in the hypochondrium and Plum-pit Qi Stagnation. With Fu Ling, expels Phlegm and stops nausea and vomiting, hiccups, coughs with clear, profuse Phlegm and loose and watery stools, treats Phlegm, thin mucus and turbid Dampness and prevents turbid Phlegm and Dampness from disturbing the Heart with dizziness, palpitations and insomnia. With Sheng Jiang, for vomiting due to Cold, thin mucus. With Hou Pu, Zi Su Ye and Fu Ling, for Plum-pit Qi Stagnation.
- Hou Pu - Moves Qi, resolves Stagnation, descends rebellious Qi, dries Dampness, transforms Phlegm eliminates stuffiness and aids in dissipating clumps. With Zhi Ban Xia and Fu Ling, for Phlegm Obstructing the Qi, leading to coughing, vomiting or a sense of something stuck in the throat.
-Fu Ling - Promotes urination, drains Dampness, Strengthens the Spleen, harmonizes the Middle Jiao and transforms Phlegm.
-Sheng Jiang - Warms the Middle, stops vomiting, warms the Lungs and stops coughing. With Zhi Ban Xia, harmonizes the Stomach and stops vomiting and coughing.

ACTIONS - Releases Wind-Cold in the exterior and muscle layer. Generates Fluids. Relieves muscle-ache of the neck.
SYNDROMES - Tai Yang Shang Han with stiff neck and upper back. Transitional stage between acute and chronic rhinitis or sinusitis. Initial stage Wind-Cold Bi.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Chills and fever. Anhidrosis. Neck pain. Stiff and rigid neck, shoulders and upper back. Intolerance of Wind. Dislike of Cold. Inflammation. Diarrhea. Muscle spasms. Mucosal swelling. Nasal congestion. Sensitivity to dust. Headache. Wind-Cold Bi (few joints affected, inflammation intense but short lived, changes over days or weeks)
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with Lin Syndrome. Contraindicated for those with Yin Deficiency bleeding. Contraindicated for those with bacterial infections (Heat). Contraindicated for those with skin infections. Contraindicated for those with Wind-Heat. Contraindicated for those with a weak pulse. HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Ge Gen - Releases Exterior conditions and releases the muscles, especially of the neck and upper back by bringing fluids to the area, relieves Heat and generates fluids. With Ma Huang, Gui Zhi and Bai Shao, for Wind-Cold with stiffness and tension in the upper back and neck.
-Ma Huang - Strongly releases the exterior, disperses Cold, moves Lung Qi and stops wheezing. With Gui Zhi for Wind-Cold excess conditions with fever and chills but no sweat and Wind-Cold-Damp Bi.
-Gui Zhi - Releases the exterior, warms the channels and collaterals to relieve pain, warms and facilitates the flow of Yang Qi in the chest, warms and facilitates the flow of Blood through the vessels, adjusts the Ying and Wei and releases the muscle layer. With Ge Gen, releases the exterior and relieves the muscle layer. With Bai Shao, for External Wind-Cold with disharmony between the Ying and Wei (Tai Yang Zhong Feng), with spontaneous sweating, fever and chills.
-Bai Shao - Adjusts the Ying and Wei and preserves Yin by preventing excessive diaphoresis. With Gan Cao, relieves muscle spasms and therefore helps relieve neck and back stiffness. With Gui Zhi, Sheng Jiang and Da Zao, for Wind-Cold with Deficiency and perspiration.
-Sheng Jiang - Releases the exterior, disperses Cold, warms the middle, stops vomiting, stops cough and reduces the toxicity of other herbs. With Da Zao, protects the Ying and harmonizes and protects the Stomach. With Gui Zhi, strongly induces sweating for treatment of External Wind-Cold with chills, fever, body aches and Anhidrosis. With Gui Zhi and Da Zao, harmonizes the Ying and Wei to drive out pathogens. with Ma Huang, strongly creates sweating to treat all externally contracted Wind-Cold disorders, especially those in which Wind-Cold has constrained Lung Qi with cough and wheezing and the failure of Lung Qi to descend causing nausea and vomiting.
-Da Zao - Moderates and harmonizes the harsh properties of other herbs. With Sheng Jiang, protects the Ying and harmonizes and protects the Stomach.

HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Huang Qi - Tonifies Qi and Blood, strengthens the Spleen and raises the Yang Qi of the Spleen and Stomach. With Ren Shen, for Qi Deficiency with general debility, anorexia, and spontaneous sweat. With Sheng Ma, raises Yang Qi of the Spleen, allowing turbid Yin to descend and be eliminated, treating chronic diarrhea, a dragging sensation in the abdomen, fatigue, shortness of breath, uterine bleeding and prolapses.
-Ren Shen - Tonifies Spleen and Stomach Qi.
-Gan Cao - Tonifies the Spleen and augments Qi. With Ren Shen, relieves palpitations and anxiety. With Dang Shen, for anorexia, fatigue and loose stools due to Spleen Deficiency.
-Sheng Ma - Raises Yang and lifts Sunken Qi.
-Ge Gen - Raises Spleen Yang and stops diarrhea.
-Man Jing Zi - Disperses Wind, clears Heat and clears and benefits head and eyes. With Ren Shen and Huang Qi, for eye disease, tinnitus, dizziness, and deafness due to deficiency. With Bai Shao, soothes the Liver.
-Bai Shao - Nourishes Blood and astringes Yin.
