* DAN SHEN HUO XUE TANG - 丹参活血汤 - Red Sage Root Decoction For Promoting Blood Circulation
ACTIONS - Tonifies Qi and Blood. Invigorates the Blood. Dispels Blood Stasis. Expels Wind-Dampness. Relaxes the sinews and bones.
SYNDROMES - Blood Stagnation.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - The local skin of the affected area is dark purple in color. There are some hard cord-like subcutaneous swollen masses which are not painful when they are pressed. Coldness. Numbness. Pain.

-Dan Shen - Invigorates the Blood and dispels Blood Stasis.
-Chi Shao - Invigorates the Blood, dispels Blood Stasis, relieves pain, clears Heat and cools the Blood.
-Dang Gui - Tonifies, invigorates and harmonizes the Blood, disperses Cold and stops pain due to Blood Stasis. With Huang Qi, for many Blood Deficiency and Qi and Blood patterns. With Chuan Xiong, harmonizes, nourishes and invigorates the Blood and disperses Blood Stasis.

ACTIONS - Promotes the movement of Qi. Spreads Liver Qi. Scatters Cold. Alleviates hernial pain.
SYNDROMES - Cold-type Shan Qi (bulging disorders - hernias). Foxy Shan Qi.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Cold Type Shan Qi: A swollen, firm, cold, retracted scrotum or testicles. Severe: A stone-like hardness. Testicular pain that improves with warmth. Intolerance of Cold. Foxy Shan Qi: A part of the Small Intestine intermittently descends into the groin or scrotum through the inguinal canal. It disappears when the patient lies flat or when manually reduced. It reappears when the patient stands, coughs or sneezes. It may be large or small, changing from time to time. There may or may not be pain radiating to the testes.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Chuan Lian Zi - Dredges Liver Qi, releases Stagnation, stops pain. With Xiao Hui Xiang, strongly stops pain and regulates Qi to treat bulging disorders and mobile masses in the lower abdomen. With Xiao Hui Xiang and Wu Zhu Yu, for pain associated with hernia. With Xiao Hui Xiang, Wu Zhu Yu and Mu Xiang, for hernial disorders with lower abdominal pain and distention due to Cold.
-Mu Xiang - Promotes the movement of Qi, alleviates pain, adjusts and regulates stagnant Qi in the Intestines, strengthens the Spleen, prevents Stagnation and harmonizes the Liver and Spleen.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Sweating. Aversion to Wind. Heavy sensation in the body. Superficial edema. Urinary difficulty. Knee pain. Abdominal bloating. Edema in lower legs. Fatigue. Edema in women with constitutional Deficiency.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Contraindicated for those with acute Excess type edema. Contraindicated for those with Dampness Obstructing the Protective Yang. Overdose can cause nausea and anorexia.

-Zhi Zi - Clears Heat, eliminates irritability and drains Damp-Heat. With Huang Qin, drains Fire and eliminates Dampness.
-Mu Tong - Promotes urination. With Che Qian Zi and Ze Xie, drains Heat from Upper Jiao and eliminates Damp-Heat from Lower Jiao through the urine.
-Che Qian Zi - Promotes urination and clears Heat.
-Ze Xie - Promotes urination and clears Damp Heat.
-Chai Hu - Disperses Heat due to Liver/Gallbladder Qi Stagnation and focuses the actions of the formula on Liver/Gallbladder. (Omitted in some versions). With Huang Qin, clears Shao Yang Heat. With Gan Cao, for hepatitis and upper right quadrant pain.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Pain, swelling and obvious tenderness in the superficial veins along the limbs or the thoracoepigastric walls. Hard cord-like swollen masses may be felt. Palpitations. Stabbing pain in the anterior region over the Heart. Suffocating sensation in chest. Maybe drawing pain down internal aspect of arm (especially left arm). Pain (in chest and/or arm) tends to be severe and intermittent. Thirst with a desire for cold drinks. Irritability, irascibility. Feeling of Heat and disturbance in the Heart. Insomnia. Flushed face. Bitter taste in mouth.
