SYNDROMES - Qi and Blood Stagnation.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - A history of traumatic injury to the low back and/or hip area. Severe pain. Enduring pain. Fixed pain. Pain is worse at night. Pain extends from the low back to the thigh, possibly radiating to the lower thigh and lateral leg. Pain worse with pressure. Possible pain on coughing. Possible palpable cords or hardness in the buttock area. Possible restricted movement of the lower limbs. Possible systemic symptoms of Qi and Blood Stagnation: Irritability. Premenstrual breast distention and pain. Dysmenorrhea. A dark, sooty facial complexion.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Zi Su Geng - Promotes the flow of Qi, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, expands the chest and benefits the diaphragm. With Xiang Fu, for fullness, distention, and discomfort in the epigastrium and abdomen due to Liver attacking the Spleen.
-Su Mu - Invigorates Blood circulation, dispels Blood Stasis, reduces swellings, opens the channels and alleviates pain. With Hong Hua, for traumatic injury with painful, swollen bruises or hematomas.
-Dang Gui - Invigorates and harmonizes the Blood. With Tao Ren and Hong Hua, for symptoms associated with Blood Stasis. With Xiang Fu, tonifies the Blood and moves Qi.
-Chi Shao - Invigorates the Blood, dispels Blood Stasis and relieves pain. With Tao Ren, for Blood Stasis. with Xiang Fu, for flank pain, abdominal pain and dysmenorrhea due to Qi and Blood Stagnation.
-Tao Ren - Breaks up Blood Stasis and invigorates Blood circulation. With Hong Hua, invigorates the Blood for all types of Blood Stagnation such as dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea with abdominal pain, clotting and scanty flow, swollen painful sores and chest pain due to Blood Stasis. ACTIONS - Releases the Exterior. Transforms congested Fluids (Thin Mucus). Transforms Phlegm. Warms the Lungs. Descends Qi. Relieves wheezing and coughing.
SYNDROMES - Wind-Cold Attacks the Lungs (severe). Exogenous Wind-Cold Invasion with Water Retention due to Spleen Deficiency. Yi Yin. Zhi Yin.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Fever and chills (chills predominant). Anhidrosis. Cough. Wheezing (asthma). Copious, white, stringy, difficult to expectorate sputum. Stifling sensation in the chest. Lacrimation. General heaviness (especially upper body). General body aches. No thirst. Floating edema (severe). Considerable difficulty breathing while lying down (severe). Intolerance of Cold. Periorbital edema. Dyspnea. Vomiting of frothy saliva during pregnancy. Chest distention. Stiff neck. Dry heaves. Decreased urine. Subcardiac edema. Stridor. Occasional chills on the back. Hiccups. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Do not use long term. Contraindicated for those with Heat conditions. Contraindicated for those with hemoptysis. Contraindicated for those with coughing due to Yin Deficiency. Contraindicated for those with dry mouth and throat with thick, yellow sputum.
Contraindicated for those with a sore throat and a rapid pulse. Use with caution for those with hypertension.
NOTES - The combination of inhaled fluticasone and this formula can be an important modality in the treatment of mild and severe asthma patients.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Ma Huang - Induces sweating, releases the exterior, disseminates and facilitates Lung Qi, calms wheezing, stops coughing, warms Cold and circulates water.
With Gui Zhi, for Wind-Cold Excess with fever, chills and anhidrosis. With Gan Jiang, for stagnant Fluids. With Gan Jian, Xi Xin and Ban Xia, for wheezing or coughing due to an Exterior Wind-Cold Attack and Cold Stagnation in the Interior.
-Gui Zhi - Releases the exterior, disperses Cold, adjusts the Ying and Wei and warms the channels. With Ma Huang, releases the exterior and Warms Cold. With Bai Shao, warms and tonifies the Middle Jiao.
-Gan Jiang - Warms the Lungs, transforms thin mucus, warms the Middle and expels Cold. With Xi Xin, warms the interior and transforms Fluids. With Xi Xin, Ma Huang and Gui Zhi, releases the exterior. With Ban Xia, for vomiting of saliva or dry heaves due to Cold-induced congested fluids.
-Xi Xin - Releases Wind and Cold, warms the Lungs, disperses Internal Cold, circulates water, transforms Phlegm and opens the nose. With Ma Huang, stops cough and wheezing due to Wind-Cold Attacks the Lungs. With Ma Huang and Gui Zhi, releases the Exterior. With Wu Wei Zi, for coughing and wheezing due to Cold Phlegm.
-Wu Wei Zi - Prevents leakage of Lung Qi, stops cough, astringes sweat and generates fluids. With Xi Xin, regulates the opening and closing of the Lungs, alleviating coughing and calming wheezing for patients with existing thin mucus who are exposed to Wind-Cold leading to acute wheezing and coughing of clear thin sputum. With Gan Jiang and Xi Xin, for Cold in the Lung channel with non-stop coughing and wheezing. With Gan Jiang, Ma Huang and Xi Xin, for coughing and wheezing from Cold Thin Mucus.
-Bai Shao - Nourishes Blood, astringes Yin and adjusts the Ying and Wei. With Gui Zhi, harmonizes the Ying and Wei in Tai Yang Zhong Feng.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Tidal fever. Sweating. Thirst. Stifling sensation in the chest. Nausea. Severe diarrhea. Scanty urine.
HERBS AND ACTIONS
-Xing Ren - Disperses the Lungs, stops cough and resolves Phlegm. With Hou Po, for Upper and Middle Jiao Dampness with a stifling sensation in the chest and epigastric and abdominal distention with a feeling of fullness.
-Huang Qin - Clears Heat, drains Fire and dries Dampness. With Huang Lian, drains pathogenic Heat from the Upper and Middle Jiaos for high fever, redness, swelling and pain of the head and face, dry mouth, parched throat, ulcerations of the mouth and tongue, epistaxis, rashes and irritability in warm-febrile disease.
-Huang Lian - Drains Fire, relieves toxicity, clears Heat and drains Dampness. With Huang Qin for high fever in Warm-Febrile disease.
-Chen Pi - Regulates Qi and dries Dampness.
-Hou Po - Regulates Qi and transforms Dampness. With Huang Lian, for acute diarrhea associated with sudden turmoil disorder from Damp-Heat.
-Yu Jin - Invigorates the Blood, breaks up Stagnation and regulates Qi.
-Hua Shi - Promotes urination, drains Heat from the Bladder, clears Heat, releases Summerheat and expels Damp-Heat through the urine.

SYNDROMES - Kidney Yin Deficiency with Fire Flaring. Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency (with Fire Flaring). Steaming Bone Disorder. Damp-Heat in the Lower Jiao with underlying Kidney Yin Deficiency.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS - Night sweats. Dry mouth and tongue. Lower back and knee pain. Urinary difficulty. Weakness of the lower back, knees and extremities. Steaming bones. Light-headedness. Vertigo. Tinnitus. Diminished hearing. Five sole Heat. Chronic dry, sore throat. Toothache. Wasting and thirsting disorder (Xiao Ke). Dizziness. Muscular weakness. Irritability. Dry skin. Deafness. Spontaneous and nocturnal emissions. Tidal fevers. Loose teeth. Dripping urine. Thirst. Swollen gums, painful and light red in color. Numbness and weakness at the waist and knees. Heel pain. CONTRAINDICATIONS AND HERB/DRUG INTERACTIONS - Use caution for those with Spleen Deficiency type diarrhea and indigestion with a white greasy tongue coat. Contraindicated for those with Yang Deficiency. Administration of this formula showed effectiveness in treating streptomycin-induced toxicities.
