Jeffelk’s comment below!
Sir, as first to post a comment on these uploads, you summed up most succinctly every strand of near perfection that is due this wonderful series...
In addition I posit two things for the consideration of perusers of these comments;
Go out and sell the very shirt of your back and buy the annotated complete set of Sherlock Holmes stories. Tis quite the tome, resplendent with the many drawings that accompanied ‘Dr Watsons’ retelling of their adventures just as they appeared in The Strand magazine back in the day..
Another BBC audio series of the same quality as the above, is; ‘James Mclevy, or rather, titled “McLevy”. Set in a similar period of history as Sherlock Holmes, the producers went the extra mile, just to ensure the sound effects were as authentic as humanly possible.
For example, rather choosing random stock sound effects for say; horses pulling a carriage, the crew got a horse and carriage, and set out to drive the horses in the middle of the night and drove around ‘Edinburgh’s Old Town’ where the streets still have cobbled road surfaces, with the sound recordists hanging out the side of the carriage with their mics, determined to get as authentic background sounds as possible the sounds of both the steel banded wooden carriage wheels, and the horses as their iron hooves trotted, galloped, snorted and wheezed depending whether it was a easy pace or a quick gallop. altogether the most sumptuous sounds that are caviar’ too the senses
With that attention to detail, Tis easier to understand just why the show is held in the very highest esteem to the radio audience....
Fun Fact, (central character, McLevy ) is indeed
a real life historical character, regarded by some historians to have been the very first ‘Full time Detective of Police, if not in the UK, but most certainly in Scotland.. In addition, in the show (also an historical fact) McLevy’s love interest Jean Brash; performed perfectly by the stunning Siobhan Redmond, Jean; a Bawdy Hoose Keeper (I shall let the reader interpret ‘Bawdy house’ and it’s meaning!!) was in an actual romantic relationship with the, ‘Redoubtable McLevy’ impeccably performed by Scottish actor who has been most of the fairly recent Hollywood franchises, from three of the Bourne movies too, The series where they live in some cold parts and regularly fight a lot !!!! (Back probably in the Middle Ages or thereabouts!!!! erm apologies “brain Fog!” They movies/shows will come back to me before I hit ‘Post comment!’
David Ashton; both the writer of the series and it’s very own Chief Inspector Roach...
Using all the restraint in my possession; I shall stop wittering on here!!!
