going to celebrate belled 100th birthday
00:02:31
of one of the greatest jazz drummers of
all time the late great Art Blakey leader
00:02:37
of the Jazz Messengers.
00:02:46
Just this past October the 11th
and 1919 the great drummer
00:02:53
Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
one of the centers for jazz in art
00:02:59
in general in the United States he moved
to New York City after years of traveling
00:03:05
the world and making jazz history and
died at the age of 71 in October of
00:03:12
1990 he's known as one of the
great musicians and band leaders
00:03:19
great drummer and percussionist who led
his own band Art Blakey and the Jazz
00:03:24
Messengers for years
beginning in the 1950 s.
00:03:29
He worked with
00:03:30
a number of great musicians including
Horace Silver who he led the Jazz
00:03:37
Messengers with until Horace decided to
take off and start his own band and then
00:03:42
left the name the Jazz Messengers with
art and he brought in so many fantastic
00:03:47
musicians to work with him teaching some
of the younger generation of players and
00:03:52
you'll hear all about that and hear lots
of the great music that he made over the
00:03:56
years on this edition of jazz America let's
begin with some of his. Earliest work
00:04:02
recorded in New York in 1956 he always had
00:04:05
a host of fantastic players working with
him including the great saxophonist Jackie
00:04:11
MacLean who joined him on this song
cranky spankie the great Art Blakey
00:04:17
100 years old just last year celebrated
on this edition of jazz America.

00:16:05
One of the premier vocalists in jazz today
paying all macho to the late great Art
00:16:11
Blakey That's Gregory Porter with the Paul
Zauner blue brass and their version of
00:16:18
maybe Art Blakey is most famous
song ever moan and from the album
00:16:24
a great voices of Harlem hope you enjoyed
that in our celebration of the great Art
00:16:30
Blakey continuing here on jazz America
and what a story is his work with
00:16:36
a young artists that he gave
00:16:39
a big helping hand to including Listen to
this list Freddie Hubbard Wayne Shorter
00:16:46
leave Morgan Benny Golson Kenny door I'm
Hank Mobley Donald Byrd Jackie McLean
00:16:53
Johnny Griffin Curtis Fuller Chuck Mann
Joni Chick Corea Keith Jarrett cedar Walton
00:17:00
Woody Shaw and went on and Branford
Marsalis we're going to hear Wynton and
00:17:05
Branford working with Art Blakey in the
Jazz Messengers after we get some thoughts
00:17:10
from whence in about Mr Blaikie his great
teacher here on jazz America this is for
00:17:16
the folks around the world that would love
to be able to hang with Wynton Marsalis
00:17:20
in just a couple of minutes of
doing just that and and this is
00:17:23
a very nice time in your life
is it not winter because
00:17:26
a lot of great things to celebrate at this
point in their shores no complaints you
00:17:31
know I get e-mail from all over the world
it's an astounding thing and so many of
00:17:36
the younger people are writing me saying
I love jazz I want to be I want to be
00:17:40
a jazz musician I want to be involved in
a kind of makes me remember that what
00:17:45
a lot of people have said about you I
can't tell you how many times people have
00:17:48
said remember when Leonard Bernstein did
the concerts for kids and the end when
00:17:52
thousands doing the same
thing that's got to be
00:17:55
a really good feeling to know that that
you're keeping the ball rolling to
00:17:58
a certain extent and I'd
like for you to kind of give
00:18:00
a thought to those. If they're listening
out there those young people the semi goes
00:18:03
email saying I want to study jazz I want
to learn more about jazz this is an
00:18:06
important thing to us and it
went on Well it is my fault as
00:18:09
a jazz musician he is he's
00:18:11
a teacher and I was always around the music
I've always tried to be accessible to
00:18:15
the younger musicians I was
fortunate enough to go on
00:18:18
a role when I was 18. What are Blake
in there what Herbie Hancock and then
00:18:23
ultimately with my own group and I always
have kids coming in band Rector's bring
00:18:27
their kids and I'm always trying to do
workshops and be be around around kids in
00:18:33
just be a part of shaping of the
world a day into but they also do
00:18:37
a lot to shape the world I'm in you know
you mention our play key and I'm going to
00:18:41
be doing that I have so many folks I've
talked to that that went to the University
00:18:46
of Hart Blakey and I read
00:18:48
a comment or something I think some time
from you that something along the lines of
00:18:52
you would not you feel like you would not
have embraced jazz as deeply as you have
00:18:56
if you had never met and worked with him
is that something close to what that quote
00:19:00
might we have said I would have been but
I am braced but I would have learned how
00:19:03
to play it because not to play you have
to be on the bandstand. It's not in the
00:19:08
practice room you know it's not some
consider the workout in your house and Art
00:19:13
Blakey to you. The word I get
is that it was basically
00:19:17
a situation of here I go if you can jump
in here and hang with me then good luck
00:19:22
and he was like a sacrificial hero
00:19:24
a sacrificial here he was sacrificed his
swing for you to learn I. Come to New York
00:19:30
and here thank you man
00:19:31
a railroad. Let's travel back in time
to January 1982 and to San Francisco
00:19:37
California to the famous club the Keystone
corner for Art Blakey on drums with went
00:19:44

you to send me an email if you have
00:27:31

Jazz Masters from piano player piano player
I'd like to start by inviting Joanne
00:41:44
back into the stage. You have
the story talking about being
00:41:51
a parent of 4 you know living in Lower
East Side. And maybe you could share the
00:41:58
story about going to slugs and sitting in
one night oh yeah Ok And he really felt
00:42:03
like hearing some music and he knew he was
there so I went right around the corner
00:42:07
to slugs in the bins and a great scene a
fantastic but it was new piano there was
00:42:14
a guy sitting up at the piano Anyways
I'm playing so I used to sling out for
00:42:20
a minute. But he wasn't he just wasn't
playing so I'm tired I want to hear this
00:42:26
and to the piano I just walked up and asked
him if I could play and he said yes.
00:42:33
So anyway I'm. Not to the end of this
then in the end he desired me and it was.
00:42:41
You know how long was that relationship
with but about 3 years. Well Joanne back he
00:42:47
certainly learned her lessons well with Art
Blakey and showed that to be true with
00:42:52
all of her 20 plus albums as a
leader and her election as an n.e.a.

a one on this edition of the program we're
going to celebrate belled 100th birthday
00:02:31
of one of the greatest jazz drummers of
all time the late great Art Blakey leader
00:02:37
of the Jazz Messengers.
00:02:46
Just this past October the 11th
and 1919 the great drummer
00:02:53
Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
one of the centers for jazz in art
00:02:59
in general in the United States he moved
to New York City after years of traveling
00:03:05
the world and making jazz history and
died at the age of 71 in October of
00:03:12
1990 he's known as one of the
great musicians and band leaders
00:03:19
great drummer and percussionist who led
his own band Art Blakey and the Jazz
00:03:24
Messengers for years
beginning in the 1950 s.
00:03:29
He worked with
00:03:30
a number of great musicians including
Horace Silver who he led the Jazz
00:03:37
Messengers with until Horace decided to
take off and start his own band and then
00:03:42
left the name the Jazz Messengers with
art and he brought in so many fantastic
00:03:47
musicians to work with him teaching some
of the younger generation of players and
00:03:52
you'll hear all about that and hear lots
of the great music that he made over the
00:03:56
years on this edition of jazz America let's
begin with some of his. Earliest work
00:04:02
recorded in New York in 1956 he always had
00:04:05
a host of fantastic players working with
him including the great saxophonist Jackie
00:04:11
MacLean who joined him on this song
cranky spankie the great Art Blakey
00:04:17
100 years old just last year celebrated
on this edition of jazz America.

00:16:05
One of the premier vocalists in jazz today
paying all macho to the late great Art
00:16:11
Blakey That's Gregory Porter with the Paul
Zauner blue brass and their version of
00:16:18
maybe Art Blakey is most famous
song ever moan and from the album
00:16:24
a great voices of Harlem hope you enjoyed
that in our celebration of the great Art
00:16:30
Blakey continuing here on jazz America
and what a story is his work with
00:16:36
a young artists that he gave
00:16:39
a big helping hand to including Listen to
this list Freddie Hubbard Wayne Shorter
00:16:46
leave Morgan Benny Golson Kenny door I'm
Hank Mobley Donald Byrd Jackie McLean
00:16:53
Johnny Griffin Curtis Fuller Chuck Mann
Joni Chick Corea Keith Jarrett cedar Walton
00:17:00
Woody Shaw and went on and Branford
Marsalis we're going to hear Wynton and
00:17:05
Branford working with Art Blakey in the
Jazz Messengers after we get some thoughts
00:17:10
from whence in about Mr Blaikie his great
teacher here on jazz America this is for
00:17:16
the folks around the world that would love
to be able to hang with Wynton Marsalis
00:17:20
in just a couple of minutes of
doing just that and and this is
00:17:23
a very nice time in your life
is it not winter because
00:17:26
a lot of great things to celebrate at this
point in their shores no complaints you
00:17:31
know I get e-mail from all over the world
it's an astounding thing and so many of
00:17:36
the younger people are writing me saying
I love jazz I want to be I want to be
00:17:40
a jazz musician I want to be involved in
a kind of makes me remember that what
00:17:45
a lot of people have said about you I
can't tell you how many times people have
00:17:48
said remember when Leonard Bernstein did
the concerts for kids and the end when
00:17:52
thousands doing the same
thing that's got to be
00:17:55
a really good feeling to know that that
you're keeping the ball rolling to
00:17:58
a certain extent and I'd
like for you to kind of give
00:18:00
a thought to those. If they're listening
out there those young people the semi goes
00:18:03
email saying I want to study jazz I want
to learn more about jazz this is an
00:18:06
important thing to us and it
went on Well it is my fault as
00:18:09
a jazz musician he is he's
00:18:11
a teacher and I was always around the music
I've always tried to be accessible to
00:18:15
the younger musicians I was
fortunate enough to go on
00:18:18
a role when I was 18. What are Blake
in there what Herbie Hancock and then
00:18:23
ultimately with my own group and I always
have kids coming in band Rector's bring
00:18:27
their kids and I'm always trying to do
workshops and be be around around kids in
00:18:33
just be a part of shaping of the
world a day into but they also do
00:18:37
a lot to shape the world I'm in you know
you mention our play key and I'm going to
00:18:41
be doing that I have so many folks I've
talked to that that went to the University
00:18:46
of Hart Blakey and I read
00:18:48
a comment or something I think some time
from you that something along the lines of
00:18:52
you would not you feel like you would not
have embraced jazz as deeply as you have
00:18:56
if you had never met and worked with him
is that something close to what that quote
00:19:00
might we have said I would have been but
I am braced but I would have learned how
00:19:03
to play it because not to play you have
to be on the bandstand. It's not in the
00:19:08
practice room you know it's not some
consider the workout in your house and Art
00:19:13
Blakey to you. The word I get
is that it was basically
00:19:17
a situation of here I go if you can jump
in here and hang with me then good luck
00:19:22
and he was like a sacrificial hero
00:19:24
a sacrificial here he was sacrificed his
swing for you to learn I. Come to New York
00:19:30
and here thank you man
00:19:31
a railroad. Let's travel back in time
to January 1982 and to San Francisco
00:19:37
California to the famous club the Keystone
corner for Art Blakey on drums with went
00:19:44

of our celebration of 100 years of Art
00:27:25
Blakey coming up but 1st I want to invite
you to send me an email if you have
00:27:31

Jazz Masters from piano player piano player
I'd like to start by inviting Joanne
00:41:44
back into the stage. You have
the story talking about being
00:41:51
a parent of 4 you know living in Lower
East Side. And maybe you could share the
00:41:58
story about going to slugs and sitting in
one night oh yeah Ok And he really felt
00:42:03
like hearing some music and he knew he was
there so I went right around the corner
00:42:07
to slugs in the bins and a great scene a
fantastic but it was new piano there was
00:42:14
a guy sitting up at the piano Anyways
I'm playing so I used to sling out for
00:42:20
a minute. But he wasn't he just wasn't
playing so I'm tired I want to hear this
00:42:26
and to the piano I just walked up and asked
him if I could play and he said yes.
00:42:33
So anyway I'm. Not to the end of this
then in the end he desired me and it was.
00:42:41
You know how long was that relationship
with but about 3 years. Well Joanne back he
00:42:47
certainly learned her lessons well with Art
Blakey and showed that to be true with
00:42:52
all of her 20 plus albums as a
leader and her election as an n.e.a.
